The Official 2014 Opening Day thread
GreatScott82 replied to southsider2k5's topic in 2014 Season in Review
2014! A season for growth and new possibilities. Excited to see Eaton, Abreu, and Garcia in a Sox uniform for an entire season. Go Sox! -
Sprint already bought out the remaining US Cellular customers and cell towers in Chicago. It's only a matter of time before Sprint buys out US Cellular Field from US Cellular to change the naming rights to "Sprint Field". Honestly, I can care less about the name. If they can acquire even more money for ballpark improvements, I'm ALL for it!

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 29, 2014 -> 09:55 AM) The fact that there are 9 pages about the Sox hypothetically signing a pitcher that they are never going to sign is funny to me. I created a thread to spark some conversation about the future of our rotation. Will we get Max? I don't know.. But it's fun to discuss the possibilities with some of my favorite Sox posters. We are not always going to agree with things, but I sure do value your constructive thoughts. Is it funny? I don't think so. And I also wouldn't say "the sox will NEVER" sign a certain player. For instance, if Max has an average season- his cost will come way down and the Sox can come in low with an offer. I cannot wait to start watching some meaningful baseball. Especially with our young pitching.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 11:38 PM) Did you read the article? His agent is targeting Greinke, which is $147 million. He's going to be the second pitcher on the market after Scherzer, so he's arguably going to get at least $125-130 million and 5 years, so you're already in Tanaka territory there. Hahn/JR were willing to take that risk on Tanaka in his mid 20's. They won't do it with Shields in his mid 30's for roughly the same price. That is why I suggested Scherzer for that #2 starter spot. He will only be 29 at the beginning of next year. If that is 'too old' for this team, then they better trade Danks soon. He will be 30 next year- ANCIENT! I know the Sox are trying to acquire guys in their early to mid-20s, but if they can simultaneously bring a guy in within his prime, a guy who is a Cy Young Award type pitcher, a guy who will be 29 next year- how can they not explore that? If money's the reason, I can respect that- but to say he will be too old for this new core is pretty silly. I believe you can have 1 or 2 veteran starting pitchers in a rotation of a younger team, as long as your 8 position players are mid to early 20s, this team will have sustainable success.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 03:15 PM) I like this and it makes sense. Points to wite. I would love Yovani G. However, he has a club option that the Brew Crew will likely pick up.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 08:56 PM) Adding a top-of-the-rotation starter trumps any need in my opinion. Zero interest in Scherzer though. Agreed with the first part. I disagree with your last part. If the price is right, I say go after him hard. Hopefully he changes agents to increase those chances.

QUOTE (lord chas @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 08:44 PM) Have you been paying attention how Hahn is building this team? Ummm yes I have. I also saw him almost sign a starting pitcher for a TON of $$. It's obvious he wants a right handed ACE.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 08:11 PM) The guy just rejected 144M from the tigers. I think he(and Boras) set his bar I wouldn't go higher than 150M for 7 years for sure. If teams start bidding out of control than forget about it. I just don't think he will get as much money as people anticipate. I do think Hahn will be in the running for Max... at least until the bidding gets out of control. And if it does, than you were all right- he will not sign with us. I do think we will draft a starting pitcher with the 3rd overall pick- however, it may take 2 to 3 years for him to develop. With that said, other than Max- who will Hahn go after?
-
QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 07:49 PM) Reread what you just said. Comparing Santana to Scherzer? I get what your saying, BUT- teams are putting a great premium on draft picks these days- this may shy some of the buyers away from going after him. Will this lower his asking price? Maybe...
-
Due to the fact that he will cost a team a draft pick, I really don't see him getting as much $$ as people think. Look how long it took Ervin Santana to sign this winter. He eventually accepted a 1 year deal for lower salary... I'm just saying- don't count the Sox out!

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 06:58 PM) No thanks. Yes please is more like it! The dude can pitch.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 06:57 PM) I hope you are wrong. I wouldn't want to commit that large amount to him Why is that? Just curious.

I'm calling it now- the White Sox will sign Max Scherzer to a monster deal next winter. Apparently Max is really upset with Dombrowski after he made their negotiations public recently. After reading some of this today, it got me thinking about our bright future here on the south side. What better way to bolster our rotation next year than acquiring Max? Not only will it help this team tremendously, but it will also simultaneously hurt Detroit. 2015 Rotation Sale (26) Scherzer (30) Quintana (26) Danks (30) Johnson (25) That looks pretty good to me!
-
QUOTE (peppers312 @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 01:33 PM) Robin Ventura has confirmed the rotation to start the season: Chris Sale, Felipe Paulino, Jose Quintana, Erik Johnson, John Danks. i really hope this is in no particular order because Paulino doesn't belong in the #2 spot. Next year- insert Max Scherzer in that #2 spot and were golden. For this year, i'm okay with this.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 16, 2014 -> 09:25 AM) I see a better fit with a team like the Yankees, who actually good trade us a future starting catcher, and other pieces. Hypothetically we are once again out of the hunt come July 31st. This will likely be the case pending some unforeseen career breakout season by multiple players on this roster. Who will likely be first to be dealt- Ramirez, Viciedo or Beckham? I think one of them will for sure be traded. My money is on Alexei. I agree with southsider2k5, I believe there are multiple fits in regards to trading scenarios with New York. JR Murphy for Alexei? With Gary Sanchez waiting in the wings, I can see them pulling off a deal like this.

Does Detroit have any up and coming catcher prospects?

Dunn not in the best shape of his life
GreatScott82 replied to The Ultimate Champion's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Mar 13, 2014 -> 08:13 AM) Nothing, none of that, just the fact that he's still on the roster. Wite, to be honest here, and to bare my soul a bit right now, I just feel like the Sox FO reads these threads here (not so much Buddy Bell though) and especially Hahn almost certainly reads these threads. And if so then Hahn almost certainly reads every one of my posts and takes them quite seriously. Now I don't know the man or the myths, only a tiny bit of the legend, and so I don't know exactly how he would view my posts, but I do think it's likely he sees them as coming from a member of the Sox family, or a close friend or trusted advisor. And so I feel like by showing support for doing the right things like dumping Dunn I'm just playing my own little small part, for the better of the organization as a whole. I'm just trying to make this world better one day at a time here, that's all. But it's like with you, it always feels so cold, like a deli, and I don't know where the counter is or always who is working behind it and who is standing in front of it looking for something, but it's always like one of us is waiting on the other, and like one of us always has each other's number. And sometimes one of us is a turkey but actually probably not a turkey or chicken for me, just beef mostly, corned beef probably, but the fact is Adam Dunn sucks my balls and I hope he vanishes from this roster. Ugh...Adam Dunn.... what a major disappointment. Honestly, I am tired of reading about his struggles. He has been a bust and an expensive one at that. For whatever reason, this signing did not pan out. I can't wait to move in a different direction and for his sake- either be in a different uniform- or retired from the game. -
Keppinger is bad.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 9, 2014 -> 05:01 PM) If they get Saunders for Viciedo, he had better come with a damned good prospect of some sort. Yes. I don't understand why we would want a guy older than Viciedo who hits even worse? Yes his defense is solid, but the problem for this team was the lack of offense. At this point we would be selling low on Viciedo. Unless we can get something better- hold onto Tank. Let his value increase. I'm all for making trades in attempt to get better, however trading Dayan at this point for a player like Saunders is not the approach we should take. I believe they sold high on Reed and Santiago this winter. If Dayan has a monster first half this year- then I'd say sell high once again! Viciedo is only 24 years old. He has still has room to grow.
-
Despite his down season last year, I believe Viciedo still holds some decent value because of his younger age and run producing potential. I hope Hahn really explores all his options here. Its pretty obvious that the glaring hole on this team is the catcher position. If we can get a catcher from the Mariners who fits the current mold of this team (22-27 and MLB ready) than I wouldn't mind exploring this. However after looking at the Mariner depth of the catcher position, past Zunino, I really don't like what I see. Perhaps Hahn can pull off another creative three-way deal? The guy I want is Jason Castro out of Houston. He fits the mold perfectly for us. The fact that Castro does not want to negotiate a new deal in Houston got me thinking. Would the Astros be happy with Zunino at the catcher slot? If so, perhaps Hahn can somehow get Houston involved. This is just an example: White Sox get Jason Castro (better fit for Sox who are closer to competing) Mariners get Dayan Viciedo (Mariners get their guy!) Astros get Mike Zunino (better fit for Houston, get a young catcher with a high ceiling on a developing team, don't lose Castro for nothing) Granite, this deal would also have to involve other pieces to even things out, but something to consider.
-
The best case scenario for the White Sox and Konerko this year would be for Dunn to have a monster April and May. If Dunn can increase his trade value by then, we can possibly deal him to a contender by mid to late June. I'm all for giving Dunn as many ABs in April and May. I'm not too concerned about giving Konerko adequate ABs in the first half as I do believe he will finish the year as the sole full time DH. Another possibility is an injury to another team's 1B or DH. This will open the door for a potential Dunn deal as well. I'm calling it now, Dunn will be dealt by July 31st. This will definitely make all the romantic white sox fans happy as it means more Pauly in his final season.

I have a hard time cheering for players who have juiced in the past. My buddy who is a big Cardinal fan hates the fact that his team signed Peralta. As bad as our offense was in 2013, I would much rather watch young players take their bumps than add an aging cheater to this team. All attention must be focused on that Catcher position right now. What are the odds of Hahn acquiring one before the season starts?
-
They should rock the 2005 road throwbacks. Sock in diamond on sleeve and stripe down pant leg. New road uniforms are bad.
-
I have always liked Rasmus. I was hoping that we actually got him back in 2011 when the Sox traded away E Jax. I do think he is the type of player Hahn will be targeting next offseason with Konerko and Dunn off the books. Viciedo appears to be the favorite as the new permanent DH going forward in 2015 and beyond. I will keep a close eye on Colby's #s this year for sure.

QUOTE (Knuckles @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 06:41 AM) Hahn is not done. Book it. I don't know, Knuckles. He hasn't made a move in a long time. I'm sure he is weighing his options for De Aza. In all honesty, I'm sure zero teams want Flowers or Keppinger at this point. I hate to put Davidson in Charlotte for the first 2-3 months of the season, but Keppinger needs to increase his value for us to rid of that contract. Remember, he still has 3 years left on it. The Sox need a catcher more than anything else at this point, and Hahn knows this. I really hope this move gets done before ST, but I'm not counting on it.
