GT: Chicago White Sox @ Detroit Tigers
GreatScott82 replied to justBLAZE's topic in 2012 Season in Review
QUOTE (kapzk @ Jul 22, 2012 -> 03:09 PM) All we can hope for is hopefully these guys don't dig too deep of a hole They are coming home with a road trip record of 3-7. They are now 1.5 games behind Detroit with pleanty of baseball left. This team NEEDS to get those bats going. This team NEEDS another starting pitcher. I think this 3 game home series vs the Twins is exactly what they need to turn this thing around. Anything less than winning 2 games will be unacceptable. -
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jul 22, 2012 -> 06:51 AM) The $10M kicks in if he finishes 45 games this year, which won't happen if he's a setup man. yeppo. he will be the set up man and a good one at that. Getting J-Crain back will help the team out tremendously as well.

QUOTE (northside sawx @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 03:14 PM) Dan Hayes on CSNChi reports Meters will cost the Sox roughly 1million this year, with HOU sending more cash to either his buyout or salary next year. I'd think that would determine PTBNL,among other things? I like this move. Gives our bullpen some veteran swag.

White Sox/Tigers head to head, who do you take?
GreatScott82 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 02:28 PM) Daryl Van Schouwen @CST_soxvan Tigers over last 19 games: 1st in AL in hits (198), 2nd in runs (105) and on-base pct (.363), 3rd in slugging (.465). #WhiteSox 26-20 road record is tied with Rangers for fourth-best in baseball behind Braves (26-17), Yankees (27-18), Nats (27-20). Peavy over his last eight starts: 1-5, 3.18 ERA. #WhiteSox have supported him with 2.54 runs a game in that span, 4th-lowest in baseball. YEP. Time for the bats to WAKE UP! Verlander is not unstoppable. -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 09:11 AM) Playing for the Sox would mean he gets to stay in Chicago near his family. And it sounds like he will be re-signing with the Cubs next year anyway for less money. Seems to make sense for all sides. Cubs get a couple decent prospects. We get our rent-a-pitcher in attempt to help push us over the top. Ryan gets to stay in Chicago with his family. And once Ryan wears the black, he will never go back.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 08:40 AM) Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN In the ever-changing trade landscape: The Dodgers and Cubs haven't found common ground in Dempster talks. Other teams being aggressive. Hmmm I wonder who? Now that Boston is out and if LA and the Cubs cant find a common ground.. hmmm... are you guys thinking what im thinking?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 20, 2012 -> 08:02 AM) YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD FIX DETROIT? A NICE YOUKULEAR BOMB! Haha GOLDEN! That would be nice. How about PK to have a monster game? He is well over due for a good game! -

GreatScott82 replied to Joxer_Daly's topic in 2012 Season in Review
Its time for the offense to WAKE UP!!!!! I know it will be hard vs Verlander, but LETS GO! I believe in this team!!! It looks like we have another central division collision on our hands!!! -
QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 02:16 PM) Jayson Stark @jaysonst #Cubs still working to trade Ryan Dempster ASAP. One source says Red Sox are officially out on Dempster, still in on Matt Garza Is L.A. still the front runner?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 08:11 AM) We'll always be left with "what if's" from the Ozzie Era. What if CQ didn't break his hamate bone in anger in 2008? What if we kept Thome for 2010? What if we hadn't traded for Mackowiak in 2006? What if everyone had stayed healthy in 2004? What if we signed Victor Martinez instead of Dunn? What if we started out the year with anyone but Thornton as the closer? If we benched Pierre for Dayan when Viciedo was tearing up the IL? Things would seem a lot worse if not for the coin flip/Danks/Thome black-out game miracle. Looking back, it's still hard to believe Minnesota collapsed there at the end the way they did. Having watched the Twins 2001-2004, 2006...it didn't seem possible. Yeah the Twins pretty much dominated the central in the 2000's. They won the division in 02, 03, 04, 06, 09, and 10.Its kind of funny that out of all 6 of those AL central titles, the Twins only have made it past the first round once! I believe the 2003 white sox team had the best chance at taking them down. Finally in 2005 we never gave them a chance at coming back and winning the division. Then of course that 2008 blackout game- AWESOME!

I think from 2004-2008 Ozzie did a great job as a manager of this ballclab. Two division championships and a W.S. title. From 2009-2011 it turned into this "Ozzie Guillen" show all of a sudden. His family would be tweeting terrible things about this ballclub and Ozzie would defend his children. The fact that he started bringing up a contract extension in the middle of last season (when they were only 4 games back) really pissed me off. His team pretty much underachieved the last 3 seasons and he wanted an extension. Ozzie started caring more about Ozzie and less about the team and that W.S. title officially went to his head which is very very sad. Ozzie is an excellent situational manager. However, he is NOT a good teacher of the game. He is never one to help out a slumping veteran or groom a young player. Makes me wonder why they even needed Omar Vizquel to help "teach" Alexie Ramirez play SS. Didn't Ozzie play SS his whole career? Ozzie is terrible at teaching, coaching and mentoring the younger players. I could not stand his mind set of "If they are in the big leagues, they dont need to be taught" mind set. From what i have seen thusfar, Robin is doing a great job with the veterans who slumped last year ( it helps having a calm demeanor) AND he is doing a great job with a very, very young bullpen AND he really brought the team together this year. Its pretty cool seeing Dunn hug Viciedo after he hits a HR and vice versa. This team looks loose and they are fun to watch. I haven't seen a team this relaxed since the 2005 season.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 17, 2012 -> 05:49 PM) Seems like Viciedo is a better second half player/hitter. I don't want to move him. +2

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 17, 2012 -> 07:01 AM) We're 2-2 since the break and both of our losses happened late in games, yet people are acting like we haven't won in weeks. Detroit is playing well, but we are still in first place. I can't even believe someone would suggest selling at this point. There is still a ton of baseball left. I think this is going to be a great race and can't wait to see it unhold. Well said. Not to mention Detroit has a tough month of baseball ahead. 3 vs Angels 3 vs White Sox 3 @ Indians 3 @ Bluejays 3 @ Red Sox Here is the White Sox remaining schedule for July: 3 @ Red Sox 3 @ Tigers 3 vs Twins 3 @ Rangers 3 @ Twins Our schedule is just as tough and i CANT wait to see that series vs Detroit coming up this weekend.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 01:51 PM) I don't care if it's his first year or fifth year. I also could not care less about his development the rest of this year. A 100+ difference in obp that could be had cheaply is an upgrade worth considering. I respectfully disagree. I would much rather have a MUCH younger Viciedo who is developing into a solid power hitter and run producer over Pierre who is much older and is a shell of what he used to be. Viciedo provides this team with extra power. Pierre would provide this team with basehits and a bit of speed- and since we already have that in De Aza, its not necessary.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 11:08 AM) That was one of the scenarios, yes. Maybe Axelrod, Mitchell and one of those boom/bust low level pitching prospects. But we'll see. There are a fwe teams out there looking to add starting pitching, and a few teams looking to shed it, and with the new rules, I just don't see teams paying out the nose for a 2.5 month rental of any one player. I guess it depends on how desperate teams will be at the deadline. Heading into the playoffs its very important to have 3 solid starters. Dempster would put us over the top in the AL central IMO. Having Peavy, Sale, Dempster and Quintana the rest of the way would be golden! If I was KW i would be as creative as I can in attempt to get this done. Since we dont have that 3b prospect, I am sure Mitchell would be intruiging for them along with two solid AA of A pitchers. Pedro Hernandez and Santos Rodriguez perhaps? I am just throwing names out there but we do have a few decent arms down in the farm that may intrigue the Cubs.
-
Apparently the Tigers and Dodgers are the most serious in regards to acquirering Dempster. Bruce Levine said Dempster could be had for quality young arms from the A to AA levels down in the farm as well as a solid young 3b prospect. Hmm do we have such thing?
-
Out of all the starting pitchers that are on the market, Dempster makes the most sense for us (Cub of not). He would be a rental pitcher so there would be no strings attached after this 2012 season. He is having a great year, despite his DL stint (which can benefit us in regards to lowering his trade value). I am assuming they would like to have Mitchell and a couple of our young starters, perhaps Castro or Molina? Dempster seems more of a reality than Grienke IMO but kudos for KW for at least trying for the "big fish". Its only a matter of time now before he brings us a starter. Stay tuned.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 01:50 PM) The AL Central/2nd Wild Card makes a lot of sense for the White Sox and Tigers Gosh I sure hope we win the AL Central. My finger nails do NOT like those play in games. (Although they are damn exciting to watch! (See blackout game of '08 )
-
Humber just pitched 6 scoreless innings last night in Birmingham. This may change KWs approach to the starting rotation. I am not the biggest Humber fan and hope we can upgrade that 5th starter spot.
-
QUOTE (forrestg @ Jul 13, 2012 -> 10:15 AM) I think you have picked the two most likely that kw would pick. Cooper loves Colon and perhaps working with an older BMAC will make a difference. Colon will never return to the Sox. He straight up dissappeared a couple years ago.
-
Hamels and Grienke will cost a great package of prospects. We do not have those prospects. I think Dempster is the best fit. However, I think Brandon McCarthy can help us out along the way as well. Wouldn't that be something? Danks is out so we bring in the pitcher we traded him for to help us get in the playoffs
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 12, 2012 -> 04:46 PM) From what I heard, I thought Theo didn't care about the salary and only wanted back the best prospects they could get. They'd be very willing to pay almost all of Dempster's salary, at the right cost of talent. They aren't worried about cutting salary, they are only looking at increasing the talent for the future. You can probably get Dempster for Mitchell and Santiago and A level prospect. I just dont think Theo is going to get what he thinks he can get for Dempster. Especially with him coming off the disabled list AND with his current contract status. I do however think he can get a great return for Garza. You can probably get Street for Humber and an A level prospect. I think Humber will do very well in the NL.
-
QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 12, 2012 -> 04:15 PM) I wouldn't be surprised if the Sox were (very quietly) having talks with the Cubs about Dempster. Dempster seems like the perfect fit if you ask me. He would be a half year rental. What bothers me as a Sox fan is that he said he would "never" play for the white sox. At the same time Peavy first rejected a deal to us too and he seems to be having the time of his life this year. I would forgive him if he changes his mind. He would still have a chance to bring home the title to Chicago fans.... of course it would be for us though

Interleague Changes for 2013 and Beyond
GreatScott82 replied to cabiness42's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jul 12, 2012 -> 06:09 AM) Meh. I'm not sure the crosstown series has as much allure as it used to. Maybe it's in part due to the fact that the Cubs are terrible. I don't think dropping the number of games from 6 to 4 makes the fans losers. True baseball fans are going to look at the leagues and realize that it makes a ton of sense to have them equal. The next step, IMO is to either get rid of the DH or add the DH to the NL. I dont think that will ever happen. That is the one major difference between the two leagues and it makes interleague play more interesting to go by the "home" teams rules. Same as the World Series. -
Interleague Changes for 2013 and Beyond
GreatScott82 replied to cabiness42's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 11, 2012 -> 02:59 PM) I could see five divisions with six teams each: Northeast: Blue Jays, Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, Phillies, Pirates Southeast: Orioles, Nationals, Braves, Rays, Marlins, Reds Great Lakes: Indians, Tigers, White Sox, Cubs, Brewers, Cardinals Midwest: Twins, Royals, Rangers, Astros, Rockies, Diamondbacks Pacific: Mariners, Giants, A's, Dodgers, Angels, Padres Maintains the most important rivalries and cuts down significantly on travel. Play 18 games per year against division opponents and 3 games per year against non-division opponents. You could probably work the schedule so you only have one 9-game road trip to each of the other divisions per year. How much would the players love that? What happens to the AL and NL then? Obviously my four divisions idea in each league will never happen. And it appears as if the wildcard is here to stay (and to give Selig credit, it does give those outsider teams a chance which is good for baseball). Just wish that 1 game wild card game was a 3 game series. Also in this years playoff format in the divisional round the first two home games will be awarded to the lower seed and the next 3 games will be awarded to the higher seed. I hope they fix that for the 2013 season.
