  1. Does anyone know if Everett can/has played first base? That would seem like a plausible solution. Have him start taking ground balls.
  2. Nice post. It's funny I've been thinking the same thing the last few days. Ozzie certainly seems to have the big picture in mind. Even with letting B-Mac get hit hard by the Rangers, I think Oz was looking at the big picture. It may be real good in the long run to let him know what it feels like to get pounded. Maybe showing the kid that the Majors ain't so easy and there will be days when you get your jock handed to you. I get upset with some of Ozzies moves, but the results so far have been great. If we can play all these guys, sometimes out of position, and still have the best record in baseball, then I ain't gonna complain. Well, maybe a little.
  3. QUOTE(robinventura23 @ May 26, 2005 -> 03:47 PM) http://www.suntimes.com/output/sports/cst-spt-deluca26.html I don't understand how he appears to be a Cub fan. It may have just been the way i read it, but these two statements: "...by former Cub Hugh Nicol for the Cincinnati Red Stockings" & "...another star such as former Cubs and Cardinals base-stealing icon Lou Brock?". Made me think the writer was a Cubs fan. I don't know dick about Nicol, but I never considered Brock to be a Cubs star. It seemed like the De Luca was going out of his way to mention these player had been Cubs. Just perception I guess.
  4. Where is this from? The writer appears to be a Cub fan.
  5. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ May 11, 2005 -> 12:01 PM) "[Podsednik] is the key on this team," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "If he gets on base, we can do a lot of different things." So Ozzie decides to bench him against a righty and an old catcher. And with a pure stroke of genius, he places Timo "I suck so much" Perez in the lead-off spot. According to the official White Sox web site, Podsednik was scratched from the lineup with an upset stomach. I don't think Ozzie's to blame for that.
  6. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Apr 22, 2005 -> 07:58 AM) Why is it so hard for Ozzie to just say: I'm sorry he feels that way, but Maggs is not on this team any more, so there is no point in continuing to talk about him? This is bad in so many ways, especially when you turn on another Latino, especially a fellow countrymen. Ozzie's always been firey and funny. He's a constant talker and I don't think it's his nature to keep quite on anything. Would it be nice if he didn't say anything, sure, but it ain't gonna happen. Personally it doesn't bother me a bit. I like the way he runs the team and so far it appears he has the Sox playing as a team and playing good. Something I haven't seen on the southside for quite a while. The players seem to like him and like playing for him. So far they've been very successful, that's the bottom line for me. What Maggs problem is, I don't know. As some have suggested he may miss being a White Sox, or he's just looking to blame his problems and decisions on someone else. I think it's pretty sad. Maggs was my favorite Sox player for a long time. But I really scratch my head over what's been going on since his injury. He really has come off as a selfish, whinning, lier. I do remember Ozzie calling out the Sox for not brining Maggs up. Ozzie said something to the effect that Maggs was being held down because he had an ugly Latin name (more funny Ozzie). I think Maggs had just won the AAA batting title at the time. Maggilo should just let it go. He's not a White Sox anymore. Forget it. I am starting to wonder what effect all this is having on his current teamates. I thought it was interesting that the Tribune article mentioned that a Tiger official cut off the press conference.
  7. QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 12:09 PM) I believe the expression came from Billboard magazine. I wouldn't doubt that either. Considering Billboard was (is?) the main source for record sales (charts) information for many years. I think I read they dropped the charts a few years ago, but my memory can be faulty from time to time.
  8. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 11:02 AM) The Weekly Top 40 show right? I can't remember who the original host of it was. I don't know exactly. I've heard that saying for as long as I can remember. Casey Kasem might indeed be the originator.
  9. QUOTE(3E8 @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 10:53 AM) About the thread title, where is that quote from? I keep hearing all these references to number "(blank)" with a bullet. I believe it comes from radio. It refers to a song climbing the charts (becoming more popular).
  10. QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 10:39 AM) As we said when we were #17. These things are useless. Agreed. I was just surprised to see that big of a jump. Especially after 7 games.
  11. Did anyone notice we've moved from #17 to #2 in a weeks time. http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/powerrankings
  12. My favorite stat is the Wood's career high for wins, 14, is Mark's career low.
  13. During the '94 strike the Tribune ran the original newspaper accounts of the 1919 Series. It was a real interesting read, and IIRC (which may be in doubt) rumors of a fix were mentioned in the articles. I've got them stashed away in a file cabinet. I'll have to dig them out and reread them.

    McCuddy's

QUOTE(Steff @ Mar 4, 2005 -> 09:55 AM) That's not possible.. it was demolished before New Comiskey construction started.. Doh! Well, obviously I din't think that one out.

    McCuddy's

One other thing I remember is driving by there in the winter time and it never was open. Maybe they didn't need to be open other than the summer. If I remember my history correctly, McCuddy's opened the same day as old Comisky did and was only open for home ball games. Unfortunately it closed for the last time the same day old Comisky did also. They had a lot of Babe Ruth memorabilia there. Including a oversized wooden bat that Ruth got for one of his home run records (I don't think it was 60, but might have been). I remember reading/hearing that legend has it, Ruth was the only person allowed to wear spikes in the bar.
  16. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Feb 22, 2005 -> 08:09 PM) If we were to trade for Polanco, he would be making about the same amount as Iguchi, Uribe, and Crede combined...that's 3 of our starting infielders. I like Polanco a lot...but I don't like him at that price as a backup. If we didn't have Iguchi, I would love him. Not sure where I see him ending up though. Can Minnesota work out a trade where they don't have to take on all of that money? Because they cannot be comfortable with Rivas as the everyday 2B, Cuddyer the everyday 3B, and Bartlett the everyday SS. That is 2 first year starters and a mediocre player in the 3 spots Polanco plays. Anyways, I'm sure some team will want Polanco...not sure who exactly, but someone should step up. St.Louis is probably a pretty good bet. They looked at him during the off season, he's a former Card and Ekstien and the former Cub 2nd baseman who's name I can't recall now, don't exactly stack up with Renteria and Womack.
  17. QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 2, 2005 -> 09:33 AM) I still picture mariotti as a statue covered in pigeon s***. Seems appropriate. That's hilarious! I'll have that image in my head all day.
  18. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 31, 2005 -> 11:43 PM) The only thing I'll remember him for is being a whiney b**** when Bartolo beaned him. Maggs got drilled, and when Hairston got HBP in the ninth, he was saying "Why? Why?" Hawk was flipping out saying how Hairston should know better and shouldn't be asking "why?" I had heard that when he played here at SIU he was a very cocky dude. To the point of being an asshole. Don't know how true it is though.
  19. QUOTE(joeynach @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 11:51 AM) This is from rotoworld. The Tigers and agent Scott Boras continued to discuss Magglio Ordonez yesterday. The two sides are close on dollars, the Detroit Free Press reports. While the salary might be right -- $11 million-$12 million per seasons -- the years still aren't. Boras wants seven and the Tigers are offering five. With the Sammy Sosa acquisition taking the Orioles out of the mix and the Rangers' interest cooling, five years could be enough. The Cubs could choose to get involved with Sosa out of the way, but indications are that they're going in a different direction. The Tigers are fools.
  20. QUOTE(winninguglyin83 @ Jan 27, 2005 -> 10:35 AM) Boras' M.O. is to keep chirping about how healthy and productive Maggs is, but NOBODY has seen him run or swing a bat or play the outfield since he was shut down last June. Hasn't Boras been saying Maggs is completely healthy since November? And didn't he, if not deny at least not mention or imply that Maggs didn't have shock treatment? It looks like one lie and ridiculous statement after another. I know this is how Borass operates, it's just surprising to me that Maggs is going along with it. He must not be thinking or seeing very clearly. I have to agree Maggs has backed himself into a corner. I think he'll find it hard to get out of.
  21. QUOTE(sircaffey @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 11:09 AM) I would rather keep Willie. Iguchi is not a sure thing by any stretch. I like having a pretty good backup plan. One of our strengths this year will be our depth. We have things covered if someone was to go down or not pan out. Harris stays. If Iguchi pans out, Harris could potentially be used to pick up something at the deadline. I agree. I don't see a need to trade Willie just yet. Let's see what Iguchi can do first. I also like the idea of plenty of depth. We all know what injury can do to a club.
  22. QUOTE(Yossarian @ Jan 21, 2005 -> 08:20 AM) Why are today's pitchers like fine china? Why were some starting pitchers of a generation or so ago often able to pitch 300 or so innings year after year? I've heard a couple of interesting theories on arm trouble. One is that players just don't throw as much when they're younger. The thought being that just plain throwing builds arm strength. I rarely, if at all see kids playing pick up games of baseball anymore. Seems like we played several days a week when I was a youngster. The other theory is that pitchers are learning breaking balls at too early an age, putting to much stress on arms that aren't ready to take it. I recently saw a Sports Center report on how common Tommy John surgery is becoming for high school kids. The players interviewed thought having TJ surgery was no big deal. That if they threw their arm out, so what? They'll just get it repaired.
