QUOTE(Southside hitmen @ Jan 14, 2005 -> 12:51 PM) I like to watch old Sox games like the 59 Series and the 83 playoffs to name a few... Does anyone else watch old tapes I recorded the last home opener and last night game (WGN) at old Comiskey and occasionallly watch 'em when I'm jonesing for baseball. Bonus: the Sox won both!

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 02:43 PM) Looking at some of the recently computed stats I am beginning to believe we are creating false impressions and faulty conclusions. Many of these stats have too many interrelated factors that they are almost worthless. Take a player out of his team and things are going to be different. I think the old standbys that could be computed manually in 1908 are still the purest and best. It's interesting to read all the different baseball stats available, but sometimes they're overwhelming. They are a measure for things like the Hall of Fame or post season awards. But stats still can't measure what a player has inside him or other "intangables". I agree the "old standbys" are probably best. What it all comes down to is how many games a team wins. Everything else is just a bonus.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 8, 2005 -> 12:50 PM) If he's spent sent to AAA he cleared waivers. They can't assign him anywhere until he clears. I thought so, but wasn't completely sure.

FWIW, Peter Gammons reported on Sportscenter last night that Maggs has been cleared to resume baseball activities and will be in baseball shape in ten days. Ten days sounds awful quick, but who knows.

According to the Daily Southtown, Burke has been sent to AAA. It doesn't say whether he cleared waivers or not, but I assume if he's at Charlotte, he did. Good insurance in case of injury. http://www.dailysouthtown.com/southtown/ds.../pro/082sd2.htm

I've been real surprised at how highly Steve Stone is thought of on this board. I personaly never could get past the smarmy "I'm Steve Stone and your not" persona he seems to have. I'll admit that because of my dislike for him I've never paid real close attention to his baseball knowledge, but I just can't picture him as a GM. What do you all see that makes you feel Stone is a good/great baseball mind?

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jan 3, 2005 -> 03:03 PM) The one thing this team has been missing is that asshole who will make teams think twice about what they are going to do next time. We get that, to an extent, in AJ. This is an interesting thought. I've long thought that the Sox have lacked someone like Jack McDowell. A guy who would go out every start and didn't give a rats ass who he was facing. He wouldn't back down to anybody. I think this is something we've lacked the last few years. Having a catcher, or anybody with this attitude certainly would be a plus for this team. I have concerns about AJ, most of what I've read about him has been negative, but I'm becoming more willing to give him a chance. It could turn out to be a real good thing.

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jan 3, 2005 -> 04:52 PM) It's a 2-step process. First hit the quote button. It will turn red with a -. Then hit reply. Well, here goes nothing. Thanks for the tip.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jan 3, 2005 -> 04:21 PM) Hit the plane quote button, not the one with the quote plus. The quote plus is if you want to quote multiple posts. I'm not seeing a plain quote button. I'm using Opera for a browser. Would that have anything to do with it?

Can someone tell me why what I'm quoting are not showing up in the quote box? I have been hitting the quote button, but that ain't working.

--INF Juan Uribe, who signed a three-year, $9.75 million contract three weeks ago, is rumored to have put on a lot of extra weight this offseason, and not good weight. Manager Ozzie Guillen said at the end of last season that his players had all better come into spring training in shape and ready to play or they won't be playing for him. I had a few beers with a cousin of mine last week and he was saying Uribe had put on near 40 pounds. I don't know where he heard it and I was hoping he was wrong, but it doesn't sound like he was.

I read an article, I believe last year, that talked about him not being popular with Twins players. I remember statements to the effect of "you have to get used to him" and he's not likable at first meeting. It also said this was his history all through the minors. The players interviewed begrudgingly said he was "O.K." Basically the article presented him as a dick. It gave the impression that he was, at the least very annoying. Who knows. As another poster said, the same things were said about Carl Everett.

I don't think it's bad karma, but it's certainly bad fashion sense!

I saw a headline on onestopbaseball.com that claimed Pujols had been traded to the A's. The link took me to a Cardinal page that had this story along with headlines that said Rolan was traded to the Dogders and Edmonds had retired because his "body couldn't take it anymore." There was a disclaimer at the bottom of the Pujols story saying it was a joke. Edit. Boy am I having a bad night. It wasn't onestopbaseball.com, it was another site Ican't recall.
-
Nope. I misread the the article. Got a little excited I guess.

Houston non-tenders Wade Miller and Roy Oswalt. I think either one of these guys would look good in a White Sox uniform. It was only Miller. How do I edit the title?
-
They could be losing Odalis Perez too. I think that would leave them with Jeff Weaver and one more starter.
-
John Kruk was one of the worst. He didn't sign until after the season started then walked away shortly afterwards. Wasn't Kirk McCascall (sp) a free agent signing. He also did a good job for us.
-
Ellis Burks and Darren Jackson were two good free agent signings. Both did well.
-
I agree we don't need Kline, but I don't think he's better than Marte. I see a lot of Cardinal games and Kline seemed to blow up much more than Marte ever did/does. I also wonder about attitude problems from a guy who gave his manager the finger because he wasn't called into the game after warming up.

I hear ya. I think that often as I walk across campus and encounter co-eds here at SIU.

Off quite a bit. ESPN lists Timo at $850,000
