The best part of last night's broadcast was when Floyd got into a little trouble facing Gordon with runners on and Olivo on deck. Hawk asks Stoney: "What would you do here, Stoney?" Stone:"Plunk Gordon and go after Olivo." Hawk laughs and says "That's why he's here, folks!" Stone:"Why waste 3 more pitches to Gordon when I can use them to strike out Olivo?" Floyd pitches around Gordon and promptly strikes out Olivo. Stone rulz!

QUOTE (daa84 @ Mar 30, 2009 -> 06:57 PM) im very glad owens is gone, but this is horrible news.... the fact that we plan to give the most ABs in the lineup to a 31 year old who has a career .254 obp and is a bad defender is a f***ing joke This pitching staff doesn't exactly strike out guys so you need the best defense out there, especially with 3 new guys in your starting infield. I don't think Wise is Swisher bad in terms of defense but if Ozzie cherishes the glove, BA is the much better choice. Unless Wise takes undetectable 'roids, I don't see how a career minor leaguer that's 31 yrs old can suddenly morph into an everyday major league baseball player.

FYI, Vienna Beef takes over as Sox' main dog at Comiskey: http://www.suntimes.com/lifestyles/food/14...otdog13.article Personally I luv both. But if Sara Lee discontinuing one, the other's just as good!

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 17, 2009 -> 09:50 PM) Owens' '07 > anything Anderson has ever done offensively And this coming from probably the second biggest BA fan on this board. Brian is simply a terrible offensive player. He's improved from 2006. But what does that say? It's a shame. I think he's one of the most gifted defensive players in all of baseball. Just too much of a liability with the stick. I'd rather take the given of BA's gold glove CF (I believe this board can agree BA at minimum is an above avg CF) than the hope of Owens' offense and suspect defense. This pitching staff puts the ball in play a TON, we need someone to chase down balls all 9 innings, not just the 9th. Besides, at least BA has some pop in that bat and isn't a Konerko on the bases either.

Tribune stories on Sox & economy, KW and Colon

QUOTE (striker62704 @ Jan 16, 2009 -> 05:41 PM) The Yankees have spent alot of money but they also had alot coming off their payroll. Attendance may go down but they have alot of other revenues that help pay the bills: television, xm radio, mlb.com media. If I'm a NY taxpayer, I'd be lighting a torch and demanding my $$ back from the Yankees on that new billion $ stadium they supposedly couldn't "build" on their own. Funny part is the Mets new park looks much better than the new Yankee Stadium. Actually, the new Yankee Stadium is over 2 Billion now: http://fieldofschemes.com/ -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 16, 2009 -> 03:43 PM) The Cardinals are a perfect comparison with the White Sox...the two teams have been acting very similarly over the last 5 years or so, with the White Sox finally catching up on lowering payroll. The Dodgers almost let Furcal get away...and were shying away from most of the big name free agents. The Angels were only interested in TEX, and not The Cardinals are still paying some $$ on their new stadium so that's why they've been a little conservative on the payroll the past 3 seasons (Even with a WS title in '06). Once they complete those payments, they might be able to spend some $$ like the Cubs do. -
I watched the MLB network piece on the AL Central. They didn't have anything we didn't already know. They like Quentin and Ramirez, they kinda like our youth/vet mix we have and they gave some props to Kenny for always trying to improve the team. On a sidenote, the commentators they have on there (Mitch Williams, Joe Magrane) are actually very good. You can tell they've done some homework and still love the game of baseball. The bad one is still Harold Reynolds. That voice of his is like nails on a chalkboard and he keeps interrupting the guys. Couldn't MLB hire anybody better than this clown? Bob Costas wouldn't have been a bad choice here.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 08:55 PM) Johnny Nunez, Wilson Betemit, Jeff Marquez That's more like it, I love Wilson Betemit. Can you explain the love for Betemit? From his stats, looks like a super sub type player to me. Or am I missing something?

I would love to see KW sign Grudz to 2B. That guy's bat would be perfect in front of Quentin in the 2 hole and you could play Getz there twice a week as well since Grudz is getting up there in age. It's a better option than bringing back Uribe. If KW does trade Vazquez, I wouldn't mind Freddy or Odalis Perez every 4th or 5th day as well.

4 players that went home AFTER getting to Tampa
Allsox replied to klaus kinski's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 08:31 PM) Crede just looked disinterested at the clinching It wouldn't surprise me if Bora$$ told Joe to go home. -
Despite the current situation, I see some positives for the rest of this series: 1) Javy Vazquez will NEVER pitch for this team again 2) Clayton Richard is schooling the Rays, gaining some valuable playoff experience for next yr and maybe a playoff spot next series in the ALCS 3) The Rays can't hit lefties and we have two of them going next 4) This is ONLY Game 1. The Sox still have a great shot coming home up 2 - 0, especially with the Rays' bullpen
-
I don't like Vazquez much but Ozzie can't keep pitching the rest of the guys every 3 days and Buehrle would get the ball in a Gm 5 on 5 days. No problem for me!
-
I don't see the similarities. Especially since the Yankees have more money than God (With the new Yankee Stadium being an ATM for them) and they draft better players than we do for their minor league system. It wouldn't shock me to see the Yankees back in the playoffs next yr if they make the right FA moves and trades. With us, we don't have much in the minors for trades and we have a ton of dead money we can't move easily (Konerko, Contreras, Linebrink, Dotel). The Sox need a FA 2B, settle CF and 3B, find another starting pitcher for the 5th slot and find bullpen help. They have to do all that being on a limited payroll so I don't envy KW's job this offseason.

Cleveland Indians @ Chicago White Sox - 9/26
Allsox replied to nitetrain8601's topic in 2008 Season in Review
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 26, 2008 -> 06:53 AM) Guys ... read the Sun Times DeLuca column. The team has stopped believing. Sorry but we are toast. Swisher brooding; OC talking to Twins about how great the Twins are; Oz ripping everybody in sight. We ain't winning s*** vs. the Tribe. Let the firesale begin ... hopefully at the winter meetings when our big name players' performances of this season will have been largely forgotten and we can get some value for Swish, Paulie, Dye, Javy, etc. How can we believe in a team that has tanked?? That article didn't indicate anything or tell us anything we didn't already know. Who cares if OC and Morneau are talking to each other on the field? And who gives a flying f#@* that Nick Swisher is pissed off? The only Sox player that said anything relevant was AJ and I hope he's right about next Tuesday: "Hopefully we go home, win four games and kick their ass on Tuesday.'' Me? As another poster so eloquently put it, the Twins blew their wad against us (They acted like they won the division last night ) and hopefully lose 2 outta 3 to KC and we sweep Cle. BTW, I heard on the radio Cliff Lee's battling a sore neck and may not make the Sun start so it's definitely not over yet! and screw the Twins -
On the upside, the Twins could be emotionally drained when they play KC this weekend. Ahh, screw it, this team doesn't deserve a break anyway.

There are 2 guys on this staff who are good match for the Dome, if they're on -- one is Floyd and other was on target to start here until the manager and pitching coach juggled the rotation. He's now thrown 2 straight shutouts, he has sack, and he knows how to pitch. He's also not pitching, by design, in our biggest series of the year. John Danks. You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. I can't believe we didn't save Danks for this series. In two yrs, this guy has shown more sack than Vazquez has in his entire major league career. I really wonder about that rift between Oz and Kenny as well. It's as if Ozzie's telling Kenny the players he got him like Vazquez and Griiffey shrivel up and die or flat out just can't play and he's used the opener to this series to prove it.
-
From here on out, there is absolutely no reason for Griffey to play at all except to pinch hit. That Kubel triple, Wise or BA would have caught it. And I'm through with Javier Vazquez. Trade his ass to some other team in the offseason, I'm tired of him crapping his pants whenever it's a big game.
-
I'll say this much on Javy. If the Sox do make the playoffs, he's my 4th starter. I go Buehrle, Floyd and Danks before I go to Javy in a playoff series. Given that, I hope he can give us Good Javy and not bad Javy tonight.
-
QUOTE (G&T @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 01:20 PM) Keep guys off base and we won't have a problem. Exactly! The key to this series is keeping guys off base in front of Mauer, Morneau and Cuddyer. Do not let Span and Gomez on base and careful with Kubel.
-
I don't care how many games in a row they've won, they're still the Kansas City Royals and they suck. No more excuses! With the starting pitching they're throwing at us this weekend, there is NO REASON why the offense should not score at least 5 runs each game this weekend. For the pitching, keep DeJesus off base, jam Jose Guillen inside repeatedly and for the love of God, stop giving up hits to John Buck. The guy's hitting .225 for a reason, I'm tired of him hitting White Sox pitching (I'm looking at you Buehrle) like Mike Sweeney used to. Enough is enough!
-
If CQ is done for the yr, why play Jr in CF? Swisher can just move into a platton of BA and him in CF while Griff takes LF.

QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 08:10 PM) You're joking, but I distinctly remember watching Sportscenter the night the Sox polished off the WS victory. They had their live panel with Gammons & Co. reporting from Houston and after their obligatory discussion on the actual world series, they quickly looked forward to 2006 and noted who the oddsmakers were favoring and dickhead Berman noted when Yankees-Red Sox would be upon us. It was almost as if he was waiting for order to be restored and for people to focus on what is important. Yeah, I taped that piece when I was going apesh!t. Only Gammons gave the Sox any props whatsoever (He picked them to win the whole thing before the playoffs started if I remember right). He was the only one on the panel that focused on what happened that night, the rest was garbage.

8/20 Mariners vs White Sox 1:05 PM CDT - WGN
Allsox replied to Metz's topic in 2008 Season in Review
QUOTE (stretchstretch @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 07:42 PM) unbelievable the way this team's playing that they aren't gaining ground on MN, need to hope we can keep up this level of play while they're on that road trip or I guess even better we can stop worrying about MN and hope TB or Boston slips to open the WC to the central Nothing wrong with that. If the Sox hang on to win the division, nobody can ever say they didn't earn it -
[My biggest miss was on Alexei Ramirez. I liked the signing for the price, but I really didn't think we would get anything out of him this year. I was happy to get production in the last year or two of the contract to justify the $5 million we signed him for. That's my mea culpa. I thought this guy had no business being up here and thought he'd benefit from some minor league ball first. Boy was I wrong. And the other guy I had no faith in was Linebrink. Thought he was over the hill and that his fastball was nothing more than batting practice. Now, we clearly see how much the bullpen misses him.
