  1. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Nov 6, 2006 -> 11:06 PM) can you give the chapter for that? That's an amazing quote, but not surprising, because lewis is da man. It is chapter 6, "Christian Marriage" in Book Three on Christian Behaviour. IMO, one of the best reads on Christian marriage that I have come across.
  2. I have been reading one of C.S. Lewis' books lately, and I think that he has some thoughts on marriage that make a lot of sense to me. He is actually talking about divorce, but I think that his thoughts can also pertain to gay marriage as well. I apologize for the lengthy quote, but I do find it relevant. It is from his "Mere Christianity" book, which I am finding to be a very good read.
  3. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 31, 2006 -> 04:17 PM) As sort of an offshoot from this... Am I the only person who will occasionally, intentionally AVOID a certain company's product specifically because I find their commercials so horribly irritating? I know the supposed method behind that madness - advertising's main goal is placement in people's minds, even if its annoying. But for me, if its bad enough, that backfires and assures that I DON'T give them my business, when I otherwise might have. You are definitely not the only person. I even go to the point of changing the station or muting the TV when I hear some commercials start up because I just find them too annoying. Of course, TIVO helps out with that sometimes
  4. Really, whether or not the money follows ARod to the next team from Texas does not matter. Think about the 2 different scenarios. 1. The money follows ARod from Texas New York then says "Hey you are getting the money from Texas. We do not think that you should get all of that money. We want $3 million." ARod's new team gets the $67 million from Texas (or whatever), but they pay $3 million to the Yankees. In the end, the new team gets $64 million to pay for the contract. 2. New York always gets the money from Texas. New York says, "Hey we will pass on $64 million to help pay for ARod's contract. We will not give you the full $67 million." In the end, the new team gets $64 million to pay for the contract. It ends up the same way in both cases, with New York negotiating money and getting $3 million of the ARod money.
  5. QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 05:56 AM) I'm just saying make the scene with the flag raising accurate. I haven't seen the movie, but how detailed do you want them to get? You want them to know where they got the piece of pipe to hold up the flag? Why don't we get a history of where the flag was made as a background as well? Did they use a hammer to stick it in the ground, or just some good ole fashoined muscle (you get my point anyhow)? Seriously, even if they wanted to get into that much detail, what are the chances that they interview the one guy who knew about the pipe? That is not something that would be detailed or written down anywhere. It lives in the memory of one of the vets.
  6. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Oct 9, 2006 -> 10:58 AM) Its funny how some people believe that items such as a book, or a video game, or a movie are going to turn someone into a satan loving murderer. Anyone who is this weak minded that a simple suggestion turns them to a dark path was meant to be on that path anyways. I'm not saying that the books should be banished or even that I would not allow my kids to read them, but I do think that what you read/watch/listen does affect the way that you perceive reality. Think about how you can become desensitized to different things so easily. As an example, how horrified are you when you hear of people being blown up in Iraq? As the deaths mount, does it still have the same affect on you as when you first heard of it? Because of that, I would be careful with exposing my kids to different things at too young of an age. It is not about being weak-minded as you say, it is not having lived long enough to understand what is going on. Sometimes, you cannot even explain enough to a kid because they just can not understand it at the age they are at.
  7. QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 6, 2006 -> 10:03 AM) I am occasionally guily of yelling "STRETCH!" at the TV. *bows head in shame* I do it too. As well as "HE GONE!", "GRAB SOME BENCH!", and "PUT IT ON THE BOARD!"
  8. QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 3, 2006 -> 07:12 AM) The GOP should not have to be spinning this. There are bad people in both parties. It sickens me when the good people feel like they are shamed by someone like this. Some criminals are able to hide stuff better than others. Most people are always looking for the good in people and it is difficult to believe the worse. If someone in Montana is now going to vote for a Dem because of this, that is just stupid in my book. I would tend to agree that they should not have to spin this, but think about what a few bad seeds in the Catholic Church's priesthood has done. Shots continue to be taken against them for what has happened. I'm sure that they don't want the GOP name associated with this sort of thing.
  9. QUOTE(PartyForFree @ Oct 3, 2006 -> 05:52 AM) As you may or may not be aware, the U.S. government just passed some BS anti-online gambling legislation by tacking it on to their Port Security Bill. Party Poker may close it's doors to U.S. players within the very near future. If your Party Poker account is registered to a U.S. address, I would advise withdrawing your money immediately. Obviously, this will significantly affect our promotion... 10. Just curious how this affects things: Online Gaming Ban in US about to be signed
  11. How many Knucklers have there been that have pitched out of the BP? I really have not seen too much of Haeger, so you all will have to let me know. How well does he hold runners on? Isn't it usually pretty easy to steal on a knuckler? I would think that would be bad for a reliever. I suppose that if he gets put into the BP next year, they will probably not put him in situations with runners already on base.
  12. I would love to see the plans for the new stadium. How would it look? How do you convert a stadium from 95,000 to 10,000? Is there an economical way that you can do that so that you are not throwing a bunch of money away?
  13. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Sep 23, 2006 -> 02:22 AM) Basically 2 months ago my motherboard crashed and I had to replace it with a new one and re-install Windows XP. From time to time I get a few blue screens of death with message such as BAD_POOL_CLEANER and IRL_NOT_EQUAL_OR_LESS (or something like that). I may try to do a Windows Repair although I leave these type of computer repairs to my Dad since he has a better idea with this type of stuff, so I can't remember if we've tried that before or not. I've got a feeling it may have something to do with my Drivers as well, in terms of they need updating. When I was building my computer, I was getting those errors when trying to install Windows XP. It ended up being a problem with the memory that I was using. Are you sure that your memory is compatible with your new motherboard?

    OMG!!!!!!!

That's why they get paid the big bucks.
  15. This board seems to be very down for a while since the team has not done as well as we expected/hoped. Because of that, I was thinking that it would be fun and a good change of pace to put out some of our best memories of this past season. There were a lot of good games to watch this year where we did play some good, exciting baseball. What do you remember? What were some of those good plays? Can we dwell on some of the good things that happened for a bit? I remember watching the August 8 game against the Yankees. We were down by 1 in the bottom of the ninth when Konerko came up and tied the game against Rivera. We then went on to win the game. August Highlights
  16. QUOTE(Hangar18 @ Sep 21, 2006 -> 11:31 AM) Im not quite sure what you mean by that .......... but I read that comment, and to me, the SOX only played 2 extra weeks. Does 2 extra weeks take that much of a toll on a team? Thats secretly why its hard to repeat? Just a bit to add on that. Haven't the dates of the World Series been moving further and further back? I think that it was moved back a week in 99. I don't know how much that adds to it, but there seem to be a good amount of nagging injuries.
  17. QUOTE(greg775 @ Sep 20, 2006 -> 02:22 PM) You won't be optimistic after we lose again today. We won't take 2 of 3 from the Tigers. We're done ... unfortunately. Wow, and can you tell me the winning lotto number by chance?
  18. IIRC, isn't online gambling illegal in the US? I know that is a huge thing over here, but I think that the companies are usually based overseas so that they can get away with it because US laws do not apply. Let me know if I am wrong on this.
  19. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Sep 20, 2006 -> 09:48 AM) To me, it's all dependent on him regaining his velocity. If he really can get it back, I hate to say it, but I'd keep him around with his control and new splitter. I agree, but how long does his arm need to rest, then strengthen up again before you find out if he can get his velocity back?
  20. QUOTE(CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 20, 2006 -> 08:49 AM) Maybe it should give u hope that Freddy will be better than he ever was before. Losing his velocity could be a blessing in disguise. It takes a talented pitcher to be able to master the split finger in a relatively short period of time. He's given up 2 hits in 16 innings. He's reinvented himself. Thats impressive , very very impressive. Seeing what he has done at the end of this year makes me want to keep him. He lost his velocity and learned how to pitch. I keep thinking of what he will be able to do with his velocity back and knowing how to pitch, and I like it.
  21. QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 15, 2006 -> 07:54 AM) Apologies. I mixed you up with Dixie Normus on the cancer call. Common sense dismisses the other call. Actually, that is only common sense if you have more information about the player's situation than someone like myself does (as you do). What may seem like common sense to you, is not common sense to others because you have more information. Your information and knowledge of the situation would actually be what dismisses the other call.
  22. QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 15, 2006 -> 04:27 AM) With your "call" on Frank being a cancer BS... pardon some of us if this call means not so much. Ummm...I don't think that I have ever posted about Frank being or not being a cancer. IMO, from what I have heard, I do not think that he was a cancer at all, and he is still one of my favorite ball players. I grew up watching Frank, and he was what turned me into a Sox fan early on. So, thanks for dismissing my "call".
  23. QUOTE(TLAK @ Sep 14, 2006 -> 08:46 PM) 5 years $60 million guaranteed may also have been a factor in Konerko signing. Never believe ball players, its about the money. These guys have a short period of time to set up their families for generations to come. The LA offer was supposedly equal, the Baltimore one supposedly a little above but what doesn't make the newpapers is the terms of the deals and how they impact the real value of an offer to the player. I can't believe a player is going to turn down a superior offer just because he likes the guys. I call BS on that argument. Regardless of what you say, Konerko has said that it was a factor for him. I would tend to believe what he says on his own decision more than what you believe. Sure, money is important, and we do not know all of the factors that came into the equation, but how can you so quickly dismiss the one factor that came straight from his mouth? I'm going to have to call BS on that.
