The fact tat we need a speedy leadoff hitter to play LF and Gary Matthews got 5 years 50 mil and Pierre got 5 years 45 mil is just absurd. KW is right this free agent market is really out of control. It is really a players market right now the prices are just ridicolous. That being said we need a LF to lead off. The only other free agent option is Dave Roberts who now is all but assured the 3 year 15+mil deal he is seeking. No thank you, KW is not one to overspend to make a splash, hes smarter than that. Our solution Ryan Freel. A scrappy hard nosed player from the Reds who IMO has a little Aaron Rowand in him. Freel is a career .274 hitter with a career obp of .376. He had 30 doubles and 37 steals last year and I think he would be perfect for us. Hes a pretty solid defender as well, love the web gems. Anyway since the free agent market is absurb I would do whatever it takes to get freel. Would you trade Broadway, Owens, Rogowski, etc. I think this is a deal we can get done and would love to see it happen.

Garland to the Rangers rumor from Ken Rosenthal. Rumor

According to MLBtraderumors.com Jamie Walker is nearing a 3 year 10 mil deal with the O's. I know the sox were interested and I thought he would be a great addition to our bullpen. Hopefully Kenny can pull something off and stray him back to a real team instead of signing with Baltimore. "According to Ken Rosenthal, the Orioles are close to signing southpaw reliever Jamie Walker to a three-year, $10MM pact. Walker has been solid since coming to the Tigers in 2002."

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Nov 10, 2006 -> 12:38 PM) I'm not going to make a seperate post to address moving Thome. That is why I generalized a group of "people" and not say "you" want to trade Thome. Signing a guy just to platoon with him is stupid IMO, but Alou could play DH against LHP and play LF against RHP That was my idea when making this post. The problem is we still dont have a leadoff hitter then unless we go out and sign pierre or something to play center and lead off. Although Im not giving up on our home grown talen, sweeney and anderson both could be valuable sox cornerstone players in the not too distant future.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 9, 2006 -> 05:40 PM) I dont agree, based on his age mostly. Lead off men tend to fade right about where Roberts is, not to mention the pitching in our division was ALOT tougher than what he faced last year. You do realize that even for his age, 34 i think, his MLB service time is rather low. I think he broke in in 1999 which means hes played for 8 years in the league. Compare that to someone like Dye who is 32 but he will be going into his 11th year of service, he broke in in 1996. The points is hes older year but hes not as much as an aging veteran as you think, in reference to years played.

I am the only one who genually thinks it would be a good idea to sign Roberts. I mean dont get me wrong getting someone like Matthews Jr, Crawford, Wells, etc would outstanding, but from a realistic stand point whats wrong with roberts. I know those guys mentioned above are all stars but they are also pipe dreams. Getting roberts would fill our LF and leadoff hole both defesivly and offensivly. Especially since roberts hits lefties so well where we (pods) stuggled mightly last year. And he would be cheap something like 2 years 7 mil might get it done. I am alone on this train of thought?

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Nov 7, 2006 -> 02:03 PM) I would love to have Alou on the 60 day DL. He would be the best player on our DL in many years. Well you certaintly cant want Thome in there every game we face a tough lefty on the mounds he killed our team and middle of the lineup in that regards last year. You got a better idea?

If a player is not under contract there are a few options. If he has been playing less than 3 years in MLB than he is not eligible for anything, he can either agree to terms with whatever the team and his agent decide or if not be non tendered (cut) by the team on Dec 18th i think. If has service time of 3-6 years he is eligible for arbitration. THat means if the player and a team dont agree on their own contract terms before a certain date, a forget the date, then the team can offer the player arbitration or non-tender him. If they offer arbitration than the team and the player each submit a value of a 1 year figure only and an arbitrator decides on which amount he will be played. However at any point the two can agree to any length and term of contract to cancell the arbitration. If the arbitration is held up it is a 1 year contract only. If a player has 6 or more years of service time he can simply file for free agency.

The point is Alou plays when there is tough lefty out there who gives thome trouble, which is like every lefty. Whether he takes the DH spot or plays left field is up to ozzie but just having him in there for those situations would be huge for us.

I know this sounds strange but I think Moises Alou could really help this club in 2007. I came across a stat in espn the magazine the other day that could improve our club. We were just dismal against lefties last year, Thome, Pods, Iguchi, and AJ were a combined like .230 against lefties last year or something. The real problem was Thome he was night and day, i think he hit like .220 against lefties with only 4 hrs last year. Anyway Alou although he only had 350 AB due to injury he hit .349 against lefties last year and drove in most of his RBI and HR against them. I think he would be a great insurance policy for thome who proved his value drop really fast with a lefty on the mound. Not to mention the boatload of quality lefties in our divison that we play many time, Lee, Sabathia, Rogers, Robertson, Santana, Liriano, Redman, etc. I think we could get alou for something like 1 year 4-5 mil and he would be huge for us. Helping spell thome as DH against tough lefties which he face fairly often. And IMHO that was a mojor problem with us against lefties last year. Having the lineup got Pods, Tad, and Thome against lefties didn't help either but this should give us some better AB's against those tough lefties where we failed last year. What do you think.

QUOTE(chisoxt @ Sep 15, 2006 -> 09:57 PM) If Kenny has Thome back next season. Has has got to find a right handed compliment to platoon against left handed pitching and spell for Jim every now and then. Thome has been absolutely pathetic in the second half with...count them...20 RBIs. The guy looks gassed and as I understand is playing hurt. Right now he is not help the club one bit, plus he is a strikeout machine. He had a great first half but a not so hot second half. Come to think of it, the old adage, better to trade someone a year early than a year late, may apply to Jim this coming off-season. I agree I think his performaces against lefties has been dismal and downright unacceptable. He is night and day and hurts our lineup being a cleanup hitter against lefties. I dont know if he is hurt or just no longer has it in him to hit tough lefties but something has to be done. I wouldn't minde seeing a platoon for a good righty when we face the plethora of tough lefties, especially in our division. I was dissapointed to see ozzie so stubborn that he would constantly leave him in the 4 spot despite dismal numbers against lefties. I dont know if I wanted him traded but we need at least insurance for his health and .220 avg against lefties.

MB has a 9.5 Mil option for next year or a buyout to make him a free agent. The sox are in no position to trade a guy they currently do not have under conctract. End of story.

I have been saying it for almost 2 months or more now this guy doesnt have the stuff to pitch in the big leagues at least not yet. His command and stuff just isn't good enough. He has a plus curve but has much trouble locating it, his fastball is 89-90 and very flat, and his change is minus as he devolded it last year and its always up in the zone. I have seen enough of him and would like to see him moved or demoted. Maybe its just me but I have seen enough and seems to be purely physical. I say goodbye BMac dont let the door to AAA hit you on the way out, your not even close to being a reliable major league pitcher. P.S. This situation also describes to my theory that decent rookie pitchers can look like Cy young before they get around the league for some time. No scouting reports and hitters haven't seen them before gives them an advantage but over a season they catch up. Hence why we went from 2.00 era to 5.00 over a year period.

My friend watches the sox on directv baseball package in Colorado and said the detroit feed said thome out 4-6 weeks with hamstring strain!! This is huge we need for info pronto!!!

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2006 -> 05:22 PM) Maybe they meant Uribe? Yes it is Uribe they were talking about. When they said back trouble and possible DL i thought they were talking about Crede but it is actually Uribe. We will see what happens. We have some viable backups there in cintron and ozuna.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 7, 2006 -> 04:26 PM) Well, if this is gonna be a trend with him, I can see why they didn't trade Fields now. I can only imagine he gets more prone to back injuries the more he hurts/tweaks it. I can see the contract nightmare now. Crede, well his agent Boras, will demand big $$ and years, and the white sox will be hesitant knowning he has an unreliable back. I think its all going to get worse before it gets better.
-
I didn't catch the whole thing becuase I tuned in at the last second but I thought I heard the update guy say Crede's back is still bothering him and he wont play tonight and he might go to the DL. Anyone else hear this or have any info?

QUOTE(Yoda @ Aug 3, 2006 -> 06:00 PM) Loaiza also lost velocity on his fastball after that '03 season. He's never been the same since . . . Da juice man!!

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 3, 2006 -> 12:09 PM) Freddy has a lot of problems. The biggest being, IMO, that his fastball is an offspeed pitch. Actually its more than you would think. I was listening to the score the other day and they had a guy on from some baseball stat keeping company to try and see stat wise what is so different this year with the sox pitchers than last year. The most notable stat was Garcia's consitently of throwing fastballs 90 mph or more. Last year 82% of his fastballs were 90+, this year its down to 48%. The biggest difference in baseball I think they said. Thats pretty extreme and true. The real questions is why. Is he jus fat and out of shape, has he lost his stuff, was he on some performance enhancer (maybe ampthetimene)?? I dont know.
-
The interesting thing I saw from last nights game was in the 7th inning when Freddy blew the game wide open by giving up a pair. I was sitting on the couch watching the game with my sister and after the back to back to back hits by grudyz, tehan, and shelay to drive in the 2 runs she said something to that was very interesting. She is 25 and likes the sox but still no where near the sox fan I am or any guy is. She maybe watches a game once in a while when we are watching. She said to me "what is his problem, everytime he throws it outside they get a hit". And it was like Bingo!! If a casual observer (a girl mind you) whose not a big sports nut or anything can see this after watching Freddy for 5 minutes then it has to be obvious. And she was right. All those pitches were becasue Freddy and AJ called for away away away pitches, no matter what they were. The one Tehan hit was even off the plate away and got crushed. They are making it too easy for the hitters. She said why does he keeping pitching outside if they are getting hits. I agree 100% he needs to pitch inside, no matter what the count. You cant pitch continously outside no matter to who and that appear to be freddy problem he pitches 1 pitch inside for every 4 or so outside. Anyone else agree?
-
Every ball that got hit by Garcia and Buehrle was up and up and out over the plate. Every pitch is hittable if its left up and out over the plate. Buehrle and Garcia both cant seem to keep the ball down at all. Not to mention Garcia's velocity is noticibly down. MB's velocity is always gonna be where it is but if u watch his last two start his pitches move towards the wheelhouse up over the plate way too much. Same with Garcia. I cant say these have lost it and are done. But for the short term they have lost the ability to pitch like real pitchers, and locate quality pitches on a consistent basis. They need to WORK it out!
