If there was one reliever I wish we could trade for, it would be Brad Lidge. I would have no problem if we gave up Sweeney and someone like Tracey for Lidge. The problem with trading the farm for Wagner is that he's saying he might retire soon. Lidge would likely be here for longer.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 05:46 AM) Playoffs??? And have you heard of Bobby Knight? There are so many more... Great, so we have the next Bobby Knight (off the field, of course)? There's a big difference between making a joke out of it like Jim More of Herm Edwards.....or being a dick about it like Bobby Knight.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 05:38 AM) Well what are some options we can look for there possibly? Jay Witasick on Colorado has looked pretty sharp this season.
-
Fossum is now a starter for Tampa, and they're likely going to keep him. No chance the Pirates give up Gonzalez, he's a stud. Eischen is out for a long time with a broken throwing arm, I believe. A more likely type of guy we would get is T. Miller on Tampa or Cerda on KC. Honestly, lefty reliever isn't a concern right now. Marte is still a solid option, and even Cotts looks sharper now than he has in a long time. We need a reliable righty reliever to go with Cliff and Hermanson (neither guy who I have much confidence in for continuing to have a lot of success this year).

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 05:18 AM) Can someone get a record of the games we have lead, before it's gone to the pen. I know it's been bad, but it hasn't been as monumental as say Cleveland's bullpen last season. We have 8 losses so far from our bullpen. That's almost half of our losses.
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 05:21 AM) Do you go out of your way as a manager to get respect from the media? There's a lot of sports players and managers, who do things that the media don't agree with, doesn't mean they're any worse at doing their job than someone who does. How many managers do you see snap at a simple question asked by a reporter?

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 05:15 AM) His stats are completely diff from last season basically. Last year, great at home, terrible away. This season, terrible at home, great away. Something to consider. Swinging for the fence too much at home. With the ball not carrying nearly as well so far this year, he's been hitting a lot of warning track balls. He has also gotten away from driving the ball to right center like he did last year.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 05:11 AM) And every other team in the MLB would love to have a great young bullpen like there's believe me. Matt Guerrier and Terry Mulholland (would they even have made our pen at the start of the year?), both have ERA's of above 3. Bullpen ERAs around baseball this year are down (except for some closers). A problem for the Sox is that the Indians and Twins bullpen is much better than ours. That will cost us a lot of wins over the course of the season. We've blown a lot of games in which we were leading going to our bullpen. Entirely way too many so far this season, no matter how good our record is.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 05:09 AM) Alex you say there aren't a lot of SS's who hit worse than Juan Uribe. Let me start a list; Orlando Cabrera Juan Castro Cristian Guzman Royce Clayton Adam Everett Rafael Furcal Marco Scutaro Jack Wilson I don't have a problem with Uribe. With him, you have to take the good with the bad. Ozzie needs to realize that when Uribe is going good, he needs to be up higher in the order. However, when he's slumping, it's ok to give him a rest for a few days.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 05:07 AM) I agree. But I just don't agree with bashing Ozzie's personality, behavior, demeanor, etc. because I think he's done a fine job in that dept. This whole thread stemmed from something he DIDN'T do, which is humbly accept a half-assed apology from some idiot broadcaster. We knew what we were getting with Ozzie, and I happen to have no problems with the way he handles himself. Now, the baseball side of it is different... I'd be lying if I said I would feel the same way about Ozzie's attitude off the field if I respected his ability on the field more. In a way, it's like how every Illinois fan loves Bruce Weber and think he'll be a great recruiter......after their great season last year. Before last season, they all wanted Bill Self back.
-
We have way too many relievers that Ozzie doesn't have confidence in right now. Meanwhile, every Twins reliever has an ERA of about 0.25 it seems.

QUOTE(nvxplorer @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 05:01 AM) Think about it. If it was already decided that Walker would be the one going down, do you think they would have brought him in today? I doubt it. The decision had not yet been made, and they needed to pitch Walker in order to make that decision. If Shingo and/or Vizcaino had been effective, this would be a moot point, but I believe the Sox were hinging their decision on Walker's performance today. Yes, I think Walker would have been brought in. Ozzie loves the lefty-lefty match-ups so much, he didn't even bring our closer in on Monday. BTW, I also agree that you seem to know a good amount of baseball, and just because I disagree with you, it doesn't mean I don't respect your opinion
-
QUOTE(GASHWOUND @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 05:01 AM) I don't think he ever went on the DL, but he was pitching with a bad shoulder or something in 02 AND 03 AND TAHT'S WHY HIS ERA was so high.. 4.39 and 4.51 those 2 years Ok. If that's the case, and we traded away some big prospects in our organization and then resigned Garcia to a big money deal.....that's a huge risk for someone who's supposedly only been healthy enough for one season.
-
QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 05:00 AM) Can the Ozzie-haters just post "I HATE OZZIE" and be done with it? The beauty about baseball is that you play almost every game. The problem about baseball is that with 162 games, there's a lot of chancing at analyzing a player/coach/etc. If Ozzie would have made proper decisions tonight (not Timo at 1b, no Walker in the 7th), then there would have been really nothing to criticize about him tonight. When everyone knows the decision is bad before something happens, that's a problem!
-
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 04:57 AM) But, this is not a big deal -- Ozzie actually handled himself pretty well here. This was between the 2 of them, he didn't go to the media and yell about Brantley not being a real man. I have no problem w/ that, it's when he's berating someone publicly that it becomes a issue. Like what he said in the Southtown about Brantley? I can't wait for someone to criticize Ozzie for being a terrible baseball player.
-
To add to what I was saying about Ozzie....he's the manager of a division leading team. He's going to be asked a lot more questions about his decision making than Buddy Bell will be at KC. He needs to learn how to respond to questions about his decisions in a way so that it's not an "us against the world" mentality. We all know how much that helped Dusty since he got to Chicago.
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 04:52 AM) Ozzie could win the Nobel Peace Prize and he'd still get flamed by some on here for every little thing he does. If you were Ozzie, would you have accepted Brantley's apology? If I was Ozzie, I'd start to respect people more than he has. How can he expect respect from the media when he acts like a complete asshole to them? If you were Brad Palmer, why would you ever treat Ozzie with respect after he acted the way he did?
-
QUOTE(nvxplorer @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 04:48 AM) I see it as a big picture move, not a game move. If this were September in the same situation, I highly doubt Ozzie would have used Walker. I would have hoped that this organization has learned that the Twins aren't going away. We can't afford to just "give up a game" because we're trying to see if some pitcher, who is nowhere near a main contributor on this team, can actually get a lefty batter out.

QUOTE(GASHWOUND @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 04:46 AM) Oh, and Freddy was was injured in what 02 and 03..His first full year was last year and maybe the injury took a mile or 2 from his fast ball...But is still pitching pretty good and has pitched pretty good the last 2 seasons.. He was injured while with the Mariners, so it certainly wasn't our fault. It's not like he was throwing 95 in 04 then came to the sox and lost his velocity all of a sudden. Garcia started 33 games in 99, 20 in '00, 34 in 2001, 34 in 2002, and 33 in 2003. Did I miss an injury or something? He's never had any serious arm issues that would equate to him losing his fastball.

QUOTE(GASHWOUND @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 04:42 AM) Really? I don't remember Vic throwing 95 MPH fast balls last year...and I saw him a bunch when they played the Cubs..and he was never really a Fastball pitcher..He's always thrown that slider 70% of the time..I think he threw from92- 93 to a high 94 rarley..and who knows, maybe he was over used in Brew town Viz definitely had a better fastball last year. He's fallen in love with his slider, and has lost velocity, and more importantly, control on his fastball. Viz also used a pretty effective splitter in the past for the Brewers, but he rarely throws that now. Garcia is another pitcher who seems to have fallen in love with his offspeed pitch, and is relying too much on it. Out of all our pitchers, Garcia probably throws the fewest amount of fastballs past a batter. The Sox are notorious for having pitchers lose velocity once they get into their organization.

QUOTE(TLAK @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 04:28 AM) Somebody’s got to be able to sub for Kornerko at 1B and if Timo could do it they could have saved a roster spot (over Gload), he can do everything else Gload can do. If Timo could have moved into Gloads’ role then Everett takes Timo’s because Everett can do everything else Timo can do. Timo had a chance but didn’t get it done. I was at the game and despite his rep from Japan, Timo did not look like he could be a defensive 1B in the bigs to me. Are you trying to suggest that Timo is as good as Gload besides for defense at 1b? Gload is much faster than Timo (thus, he can run for someone if needed), hits lefties much better, and makes much more solid contact. Remember this: OMIT TIMO

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 04:33 AM) Were you going to sleep better tonight if Ozzie and Brantley made up and made out afterwards? No. GMFAB. You guys just love to complain, and this is just something else to complain about. Weren't you saying the same thing a few weeks ago when we b****ed about Ozzie's bad managing, and how it would cost us games over the course of the season that we had no reason losing? I'm shocked you didn't throw in that we're in first place, etc. to try and support your argument. How anyone can defend Ozzie right now honestly baffles me.
-
QUOTE(GASHWOUND @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 04:33 AM) Who has lost 3 MPH of there fastball..Vic? His fastball seems to be the same since last year..Cliff still throws 95..Herm's fast ball is no diff then the past 3 years...Marte's FB seems to be in par from last year..example please? Viz was throwing 95 mph at times for Milwaukee last year. Garcia used to be around 93-94 mph....now he's 90-91 mph. Politte's velocity last year was consistently down from how hard he threw in his previous seasons. Don't forget our buddy Koch.

QUOTE(GASHWOUND @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 04:30 AM) Ozzie is an emotional guy and it seems the way he is acting is some sort of shock or something. The beginning of the year we loved his attitude, now it sucks all of a sudden? "We" loved his attitude? Why do you think so many of us were pissed he got his contract extension? There's been too many games this season where it seems we had to overcome bad decisions by Ozzie to win. The job of the manager is to put his team in the best situation in order to succeed, for the short and long term. Does Ozzie really think playing Timo at 1b for one night was going to help the team?
-
QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jun 2, 2005 -> 04:27 AM) What exactly does it matter to you if Ozzie and Brantley are cool or not? I don't give a s***. Because I don't like seeing our manager acting like a dickhead. This Brantley/Ozzie situation isn't as bad to me as the Brad Palmer situation, etc.
