QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 04:12 PM) Why don't you answer the question of the thread? Would you trade McCarthy for Huff? Would you start Huff ahead of one of the 5 guys I mentioned? There's not a manager in baseball who'd rather have Everett play than Huff.

QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 04:10 PM) Huff isn't even the starting 1B for Tampa Bay! The very exciting Travis Lee - he of 2 Hrs and 21 RBI, has started 62 of TBs games at that position this year. So you think he's going to push Paul Konerko to the bench? Who needs to get a grip? Huff would be starting at DH, and hitting in the number 3 spot in the first game of the playoffs against either rhp or lhp. End of story!

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 04:09 PM) I found this from Baseball Effect from a Feb article; But your point is taken though, so it'll be interesting to see how Huff can do hitting at the Cell, compared to a Jermaine Dye over a full season for example, because they both hav similar power. Good information about the park differences. There's no doubt in my mind that has to deal with the fact that every power hitter on those teams the last few years was righty.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 04:05 PM) I'm saying there'd be no back-up for SS if we got rid of Ozuna. Mackowiak hasn't played a game at SS in his career, according to ESPN.com. Gooch doesn't have the arm and Crede is the starting 3B. My point is that there is no back-up for SS without Ozuna, and there isn't. You're only talking about emergency situations, I'm talking about a guy who can fill in once or twice a week. Some people just don't get it. Ozuna isn't going anywhere, as you noted. He's our back-up SS and will be our fastest bench player once Willie is sent down.

Every AB I see Everett weakly pop up on the infield, or swing at a curve in the dirt....it makes me think we need another offensive weapon in our lineup. If you're so caught up with first half stats, would you rather have the surging Huff, or the slumping Everett?

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 03:55 PM) He has an OPS of almost .75 to .100 lower than Konerko or Dye, and only 17 doubles with 2 triples, while Dye has 15 doubles and Konerko has 14, not much of a difference at all. Now Huff's stats should pick up a little from hitting at the Cell instead of Dome, but remember, it's a more favorable ball park for RH power hitters than LH power hitters. He got off to an awful start, but he's been terrific lately. As for the Cell being better for righties than lefties.....is there any proof to that? I think it's just perception dealing from the fact the Sox are much stronger from the right side of the plate. If you're asking who has hit better this season, Huff or these other guys? Well, Huff isn't the best. However, I'm just projecting over the course of the next season and a half.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 03:53 PM) Few teams will drop their drawers for TB's GM after the Kazmir deal. The best SP's I've read mentioned as trade bait by other teams have been in AA. So I wouldn't say the sox are out of the "Huff sweepstakes". Esp as TB wants Boston to overpay for Huff, which they don't seem willing to do. The sox might have the best offer out there, even w/o BMac Considering that Tampa demanded Boston include their best position prospect and best pitcher prospect.....I highly doubt he wouldn't demand McCarthy in the trade. Remember, the DRays are loaded with outfield prospects. I'm sure they'd value McCarthy and Gio a lot more than they would our outfielders.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 03:52 PM) lemme say some words about this teams truly unheralded player. beltran signed for 120 mil, has like .260 9 homers, JD Drew 55 hurt and wasnt doing anything, magglio hurt and hittin well now, but only for 1/2 the year. meanwhile jermaine dye signed for 8 million and has better numbers than all of them. 21 homers .265. give this guy some pub national media No doubt. J. Dye has been our best offensive hitter for 2 months now. I'm still not quite sure why he's batting so low in the order.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 03:50 PM) As an overall hitter.....no doubt in my mind. Also, he gives us a lefty power bat in the middle of our order with power to all fields, and the ability to rack up doubles.
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 03:49 PM) You're saying that even though Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko have better power numbers, and that Scott Podsednik is one of the best lead-off hitters in baseball, you'd still prefer Aubrey Huff to any of em? As an overall hitter.....no doubt in my mind.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 03:46 PM) Offman reported on the score that the sox were just interested in Huff, no Baez, and BMac wasn't in the offer. TB is very familiar with the sox farm system. Maybe Josh Fields would play a big part. I can't see them wanting an OFer. Knowing Tampa's GM.....that means we don't have a chance in hell at Huff. No way we're getting him without giving up McCarthy (not that I'm complaining). This GM did get Kazmir for Victor Zambrano last season!
-
QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 03:42 PM) Thank goodness you aren't the GM. I wouldn't give up BMac straight up for Huff and Baez because I don't want "Blown Save" Baez at any price. Huff is a decent player, but he has no position. He's a 5-position backup. Tracey, fine. Not BMac and not Sweeney. And Huff would be the best player at any of those 5 positions you say he'd back-up.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 03:32 PM) Aw, what the f***? I just read through like 9 pages of stuff I've missed since last night, and not one f***ing thing happened. Geoff Blum?! Who gives a rat's ass? Where's my Huff? I can't believe how quiet it is today on here. After every single bulls*** trade rumor was analyzed to death on soxtalk, the big day has arrived, and it's quiet as can be.

Affeldt is injury prone. That would be a terrible trade.
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 07:49 AM) Since Manny's most likely staying put, Huff's probably the best player possibly out there. Huff and Soriano.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 07:47 AM) I dont know if anyone is getting upset with fathom on this. I think its all the build up over the last 2 weeks of the damn deadline. ESPN has a freakin countdown clock. We are very close this year to a team that can go all the way. But I would give up on Huff for a second if the tampa-mets-bosox deal went through. Facing Huff and Cameron is a hell of a lot easier than facing Ramirez. If the bosox give up Ramirez. That weakens them. I dont care if we dont make a move as long as our compeitition(BoSox,Yanks, A's, Angels) dont significantly upgrade that makes the matchups even worse. Yeah, I was shocked how people on here were upset that the Red Sox might get Huff. Especially after Manny kicked our ass last weekend, I'd be thrilled to see him gone.
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 07:44 AM) LOL, different side of the fence now, fathom?? I think people have their expectations higher. I don't mind Blum as long as the prospect isn't anything major. I think some people are getting the feeling for whatever reason that this deal would mean no Huff which is entirely untrue. Were people expecting us to go out and get a starter to back-up Iguchi and Crede? That wouldn't make sense at all. And you're right, the Huff stuff has nothing to do with this. And in case people haven't been noticing, KW and Ozzie have gone out of there way to make it known a big trade likely won't happen. They're obviously trying to lay the groundwork for "damage control".
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 07:40 AM) We don't have Blum yet, for the record. Rowand....will you explain to me how people are still geting upset with me, even when I'm trying to be optimistic? I feel like you now in the gamethreads.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 07:39 AM) We go from trying to get Tony G and losing out on that, to possibly getting Macowiak, and now we have Blum. Whatever, as long as Ozuna is not playing 3rd anymore. We got outbid for Tony G. I'm not exactly a big fan of Graffy's defense over at 3rd base anyways. And as for Mackowiak, as much as I like him, he's been awful recently. Blum's been hitting well since the ASB.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 07:32 AM) Who the heck is freaking out? You're the one who's 'freaking out' on dan. He just doesn't believe that this deal is going to go through. I certainly won't call that 'freaking out'... I wouldn't say the overall feeling on this board is happy with the supposed transaction.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 07:29 AM) Thats not how to judge this trade. I think some people might give two thoughts of a steaming pile of dog s*** over willie harris. Everyone agrees that Harris is a goner. But is this the best move KW could pull off to get a utility guy? There aren't a whole lot of utility players that can actually play 3b. I'm sorry, but guys like Freel were going to cost too much. Most utility players are like Ozuna, where they're much more suited to play 2b or SS, rather than 3b. SSI, you know I'm not afraid to criticize Sox mgmt for a move I feel is poor. So far, I've heard nothing to make me feel like KW really screwed up.
-
Every game, when I complain about Ozzie and/or KW, I'm told to have faith in the people who've gotten us this far this year. Why is everyone freaking out now? If KW does trade one of our higher prospects for Blum, then we should be upset. However, for the time being, I'm going to sleep at night with the mindset that we just upgraded our back-up 2b and have a legit back-up 3b now.
-
QUOTE(danman31 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 07:25 AM) I'm still not convinced. Besides, this isn't worth getting excited over, which I'm not. You know the deal's not worth making when you're more concerned about who we gave up than who we got. Who would you rather have: G. Blum or W. Harris? The answer is obvious to me.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 07:22 AM) Wasn't the Olivo deal announced like an hour ago? No, I read about it earlier in the night. It was officially announced after the Padres game tonight. It's a little different when it's two west coast teams involved.
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 07:20 AM) Wether they wanna give the Padres Baj or Borchard. Since neither fit into Ozzie and/or KW's plans, I'd rather it's one of them instead of a younger guy.
