  1. QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 01:28 PM) (*Shedding Konerko, Pierzynski and Jenks would net the team more than $20 million to work with, although KW's M.O. is to make a trade not sign a FA.) Problem is we have about $16.5M in raises next season and payroll will probably be pared back with shrinking revenue streams so unless we move someone like Buehrle I'm not sure how much payroll flexibility we'll actually have in 2011 even after letting 8 players go in free agency and trading/non-tendering Jenks. Buehrle 14 Castro 0.2 buyout Danks 6 ARB Floyd 5 Linebrink 5.5 Peavy 16 Pena 2 ARB Pierre 5 Quentin 5 ARB Ramirez 1.1 Rios 12 Teahen 4.75 Thornton 3 option Viciedo 1.25 TOTAL: 80.8 That's 12 major league baseball players totaling $80.8M
  2. QUOTE (heirdog @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 01:51 PM) Wasn't he a pot smoker, which pretty much was the reason he didn't get any better, stick in baseball. And from what I recall, after the trade, Schueler raved about getting Caruso (the main piece) along with Lorenzo Barcelo (a high ceiling guy that we expected to be the best piece when all was said an done). Howry, Foulke, Simmons, etc were all just filler. That was his first love, baseball was distant second.
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 12:31 PM) That's a better comparison. You could complain all you wanted about Erstad getting playing time high in the order in 2007, but you also had to tell me which .200 hitting player you wanted hitting there instead. He should never have been signed in the first place. Because much like Kotsay he was signed under the guise of him being a part time player when in reality it was apparent from the get go that he would play close to everyday and that's just fun for no one.
  4. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 6, 2010 -> 05:53 PM) f*** it. I just can't give up on this team yet. This will be THE game that starts THE run. And I'm not kidding. The fuse is lit?
  5. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 11:38 PM) Pauly will get some consideration because of his 16 home runs...but Teixeira/Morneau/MCab will probably make his chances slim to none. Don't forget Youk.
  6. It's great to see Quentin going oppo; he has 3 on the year after hitting only 2 last year. 3 HR in his last 5 games, terrific sign.
  7. QUOTE (daggins @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 10:35 PM) Thornton is the most dominant non-closer reliever in baseball, and is in the conversation even including closers. He should be there. Only Broxton and Rivera have a lower FIP/xFIP over the last 3 years.
  8. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 09:49 PM) Great win. It seems to me Bobby pitches well in these situations, with a one-run lead. He sucks in tie games or when he has a three or four run cushion. BOBBY ROCKS! This is how it's supposed to work with our staff, but as we all know, this team can't string wins together. Freddy baby! Thornton! and Jenks! Jenks has a 1.60 WHIP in his 1 run saves this season and the game tying run has made it's way into scoring position in 80% of those outings. That's not good.
  9. QUOTE (kev211 @ Jun 3, 2010 -> 01:58 AM) Ya I'm an embarrassment because I want to see someone do something thats only happened 20 times in the last 100+ years. The fact that there were only 17 in the history of the game coming into the 2009 season and less than a year and a half later we're looking at #21 is why I was rooting against him. How many people actually know that Jody Gerut hit for the cycle this year? Not many because it doesn't mean much anymore since they've become so common, 4 perfect games in a span of 9.5 months is just ridiculous and would be the beginning of the end for the perfect game. Perfect games are fun because they are so rare, once everyone starts throwing one they mean far less.
  10. Hawk really has no f***ing clue how to evaluate a player's defense. Everyone's f***ing amazing in his eyes.
  11. And Randy Williams' WHIP drops to 2.593
  12. Wow, hell of a play. Saved Williams' ass.
  13. And Austin Jackson's catch goes from being one of the greatest of all-time greats to just another good grab.
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 07:55 PM) I truly believe that's the last straw for not having instant replay. Should be known as the Galarraga Rule. That was my first thought, no doubt in my mind we're getting instant replay very, very soon. This is an all-timer.
  15. This would be just about the death of the perfect game, IMO.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 04:24 PM) Carlos Pena? Seriously? That makes very little sense to me. Hawk's stories about Carlos Pena are hilarious. How when he'd watch him take BP back in his Detroit days the ball just didn't jump off his bat at all and it's the main reason he couldn't stick in the majors, so he disappears for a while, bouncing around the league and minors and resurrects his career in Tampa with new found life in his bat, now the ball explodes off the bat. He basically described your typical roider probably without even knowing it.
  17. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 03:29 PM) Other then Pierre at DH with TCQ in the field, and Vizquel hitting 2nd? Well, Pierre hasn't sat out a game since April 13th and hasn't taken a break from the field in 23 games. This is why Ozzie wanted the rotating DH; he's going to use it to keep his guys "fresh". I actually like Vizquel against feldman, Omar's been pretty hot of late hitting .344 since May 1st and Scott Feldman's 89 MPH fastball is perfect for Omar since he'll have little trouble catching up to it and he doesn't have a ton of trouble with slow curveballs like Feldman's.
  18. Juan Pierre is 3 for 17 on bunts this season. It's just bizarre that a player like him would be positively wretched on bunts.
  19. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 02:24 PM) When Kotsay is going bad, it's brutal to watch him hit. Like somebody said in the game thread, long at bats mean nothing unless you finish it with a hit. Somebody in the game thread said he definitely doesn't look hitterish right now. He had a miserable game. Hey, apparently I was highly quotable yesterday. Kotsay's 4 for 29 with RISP this season, worst on the club he really has no business batting in a run producer's slot in the order. That hot streak also appears to be over; he no longer looks confident at the plate like he did when he was red hot and he's now 2 for 20 over his last 5. For me the biggest disappointment with Kotsay has been his baseball IQ: he's easily been one of our dumbest players this season, not what you'd expect from a guy who's been in the league for 14 years and careers the label "scrappy vet".
  20. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 02:05 PM) Wow, I didn't know that. That's because it's not true. He's faced 57 righties and 50 lefties this season with the majority of those righties coming in long relief. Last year he faced 37 righties and 43 lefties.
  21. Career vs Feldman: Pierre 0/5 Vizquel 0 PA Rios 4/13 w/ HR, BB, K (.308) Konerko 1/7 w/ 2B, 2BB, K (.143) Jones 0/2 w/ BB, K Pierz 2/9 (.222) Quentin 2/5 w/ HR, BB Ramirez 1/5 w/ BB, K Beckham 1/3 w/ 2B
  22. QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 12:53 PM) ^^^This^^^ Except he makes 8 times more. What would be the Red Sox motivation for eating all but the pro-rated minimum left on Lowell's deal and getting nothing at all in return? The fact that they were on the verge of getting Max Ramirez for Lowell and eating 3/4 of his deal says they should probably hold out for a young player with at least some upside.
  23. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 2, 2010 -> 11:53 AM) I believe that Lowell is commited to retiring at the end of the year too. So, unless he hits his balls off and magically jumps a few spots to become a Type A free agent, this move has little long-term value to this organization. He's making $12M this year, even if he went on a crazy ass tear and held on to his Type A status he would NEVER be offered arbitration.
