QUOTE (striker @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 03:13 PM) Where do you get the values for service time? I calculated them myself, they're off by at most 4 days.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 02:45 PM) If Rios is the Rios of the past 2 season offensively, you need a much bigger bat than Brett Gardner roaming next to him in OF at USCF. That's not going to stop them from finding a speedy, weak leadoff hitter. If he hits like he did in '08 -- ~.350 wOBA -- we find a big bat for DH and Quentin doesn't suck we could be alright but I want that slappy leadoff man to be a very good defender.

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 02:54 PM) I really think Pieryznski could use a few more days off and Id want Olivo out there against pretty much all lefties, if I remember right he crushes them. Plus would be nice to finally have a catcher with a canon arm throwing out runners. A cannon arm and a complete and utter inability to stop the ball behind the plate. Olivo's looking for a starting job right now, not 200 PA.

QUOTE (scenario @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 02:45 PM) Everything you said makes sense... but if it was my call, I'd wait until mid-late spring training or so to either cut or move somebody. Somebody strains an arm or elbow in Arizona and we''ll be kicking ourselves for turning what could be a strength into a problem. I just don't see the need for making that decision now. Once you offer DJ Carrasco arbitration you have to pay up, if they think paying him upwards of $2M is going to kill their flexibility then they can't afford to wait until Spring.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 02:41 PM) Gotta love Tim Dierkes, he was just on the Score claiming the Sox will have a $120-$130 Million dollar payroll, and said that they could possibly go for Adrian Gonzalez, referencing (not by name) the SoxNet rumor that he so quickly shot down as unreliable. Yes, we're going to non-tender DJ Carrasco because we're currently $45M-$55M under budget.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 02:01 PM) And Owens' minor league numbers are: .296/.364/.368/.732 Everyone is talking about his glove. The White Sox spent a ton of money on a CF with a sweet glove. The Sox need offense people. Yeah but that CF with a sweet glove is also one of the best right fielders in the game and despite what some have said in this thread there is incredible value in that. I'd have no problem moving Rios to right if we acquired another very good centerfielder, the more outfield defense the better. We're likely to end up with a bantam speedster somewhere on the diamond for the purposes of leading off, I'd rather he be capable of playing an above average centerfield than be limited to left or DH (frightening Podsednik scenario). A run saved on defense is equal to a run scored on offense. If the Mariners had any kind of offense last year they could have made it work. Of course, that's just what I assume will happen. Personally I want the 2 best possible baseball players to fill the 2 final spots in the lineup regardless of their ability to hit leadoff. Put together the best 25 man roster that the budget will allow and figure out how the pieces fit later.

Garrett Atkins, Ryan Church and Kelly Johnson have been non-tendered and Chin-Ming Wang and Seth McClung will reportedly be non-tendered.

QUOTE (PWSox87 @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 01:31 PM) yes Yeah, you can't do that.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 01:50 PM) I don't know where you got your minor league OPS numbers but Baseball Reference has them a lot lower than you posted. In fact is minor league numbers are eerily similar to one Jerry Owens. .289/.389/.383/.772 Not quite .850. In order to get up to .850 with a ~.100 iso he'd either have to put up a .470 OBP or hit .370.

I still don't understand how Melky Cabrera gained this repuation of being a very good to great defender, aside from his arm he's yet to show these special defensive abilities over a full season.

QUOTE (PWSox87 @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 01:03 PM) He's among the fastest 2 or 3 guys in the majors, possibly the fastest and that translates to stolen bases bc he's good at that too. He's worth about a half win to a full win on the bases alone (a win = 10 runs above average). In the field, he is among the best center fielders in mlb. All the fielding numbers say he's top 3 CF minus his whack arm. He's pretty much a slap hitter, ops'd around .850 for his minor league career but that doesn't seem reachable in the bigs bc he can be over powered by fastballs. Overall 5 years of control of him would appeal to me a lot and I think the yanks under value him bc so much of his value is tied to his defense. he looks to be comfortably a 2.5-3.5 win player, which means he is a legit starting OF and upgrade for the white sox. There isn't nearly enough of a sample size to start making statements like this. 789 innings? Really?

QUOTE (Ranger @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 08:02 PM) Errors are significant when combined with other statistics...it isn't a completely, absolutely meaningless stat. If a fielder has below average range but makes few errors, that means something. It means he won't screw up most of the plays that he's supposed to make but he's also not going to do well out of zone. If he has poor range and makes a lot of errors, that also means something. It means he's an absolutely a lousy fielder. That's pretty much how I feel. Of course errors aren't meaningless -- subjective and easily manipulated sure but not meaningless -- that's why UZR incorporates errors. With that said you learn absolutely nothing from looking at an outfielder's fielding percentage.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 04:46 PM) Pretentious asshole? You guys must see him on TV or something. I just read his stuff and think it's good ... and free. By this logic, are all beat reporters good?

QUOTE (chunk23 @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 01:51 PM) When was the last time the Sox non-tendered a player? I don't see it happening with Carrasco. 2008: none 2007: Andy Gonzalez, Heath Phillips 2006: none 2005: Jon Adkins, Felix Diaz, Willie Harris, Timo Perez 2004: Scott Schoeneweis, Eduardo Villacis 2003: none 2002: Jim Parque, Todd Ritchie 2001: none 2000: Greg Norton

QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 04:17 PM) Say for example, his heal problem, if he was DHing that whole time, you think he would have been healing quicker? (Yes, obviously with Thome we couldn't DH him at the time) He re-aggravated the injury rounding first, the only place he would have been safe to heal up would be on the bench and that's what eventually happened.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 03:35 PM) He did his job well, it just made KW's slightly harder. IN the end, Putz wanted to come here, so he did. Wouldn't Putz's agent shopping around the White Sox's offer have had the same effect? Because there's no doubt he did just that.

QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 03:26 PM) He's had plenty of other injuries besides that. You mean like the surgery he had to repair his left labrum and rotator cuff?

QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 03:23 PM) Is anyone else worried that we all agree on this signing? Makes me a bit nervous :-P Like Toby Hall?

http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2009/...co-could-b.html Have you ever heard a more ringing endorsement? There's no way he can trade/non-tender him now!

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 02:27 PM) More teams got involved with his agent, there was even a "tryout" scheduled for teams to watch him workout. He was doing his job, but it slowed down KW's progress and may have upped the price a bit. Lucky for Joe he doesn't work for the White Sox organization and has no responsibility to help deals go down as smoothly as possible.

QUOTE (spiderman @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 02:14 PM) Do the White Sox now move Jenks? Personally, I wouldn't, but they are about to go to arbitration with him, and Williams may feel that he can save money by moving Jenks while still having 2 guys (Putz and Thornton) who can step in for Jenks...or do the Sox stay with Jenks, and enter the season with what looks to be nice late inning options for Guillen. This is what Putz absolutely can not be counted on to do.

QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 01:57 PM) Exactly. Some guys just have bodies that seem to get hurt in situations that others' would not. Also, if he pulls or tweaks a hammy or something, is he gonna recover quicker playing through it out of DH or OF? He's yet to tweak anything since he's been here. He punched something hard and got Plantar Fasciitis (and aggravated the damn thing rounding 1B). If you make Quentin your DH then you vastly increase the difficulty of adding that big bat this offseason since he has to play a passable corner outfield 100+ games next year and you'll still be an outfielder short. Then there's the risk that Quentin doesn't take to the DH role and his offense suffers greatly or you have an unhappy Q because he doesn't want to greatly limit his possible future earnings by earning the stigma of a player who can't handle playing the field. So you'd be making the job of the General Manager substantially more difficult and possibly hinder Quentin's offensive production/happiness because you think he might, someday for the first time hurt himself playing the outfield.

QUOTE (chunk23 @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 01:55 PM) I would say FLD should pretty much be put to pasture for every position. As you said, it's not an error if you don't get to the ball. What if you have absolutely insane range, but can't always come up with the ball as a result? Lots of errors, but still make more plays than the average guy at that position. Adrian Beltre and Ryan Zimmerman had 2 of the worst FLD% in baseball this season, anyone care to argue that either is a poor defender? Albert Pujols made 13 errors this season. Now I watch most Cardinals games because there's nothing better than watching that man play baseball and I can tell you that the majority of those errors were made attempting to make plays that basically only he can make at the position.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 11, 2009 -> 12:14 PM) Maybe this is the problem, Carrasco IS asking for too much because him and his agent also feel that he was more important than Jenks last season Well, when your World Series winning manager is calling you the team MVP . . . The 2 sides have felt each other out and Sox are probably trying to lock him up to a small 1 year deal but perhaps he and his representative are intent on going before an arbitrator. Rather than risk paying him more than they deem doable in arbitration they'd rather cut ties altogether and spend that money elsewhere.
