QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 01:07 PM) Of course, he did have 16 doubles in 204 ABs on the road (1 every 12.75 AB) vs. 12 in 174 ABs at home (1 every 14.5 AB), so I guess that proves your point. Expanding it out, though, as Thunderbolt says, gap hitters should be more consistent throughout the year and regardless of park. There are very few hitters who put up a consistent performance from month to month and these are generally the super elite of the league. a good .800 OPS hitter is typically going to have a couple .900 OPS months a .680 month or 2 and the rest will be somewhere in the .700's. You're not getting six .800 OPS months. Case in point: Adrubal Cabrera, not an elite hitter but he had a damn good season in 2009 finishing with 42 doubles (16th in baseball), 6 HR, .308 AVG, .799 OPS and .354 wOBA. A very valuable ballplayer putting up numbers that most teams would love to get out of a middle infielder. Did his gap power maker him a more consistent hitter from month to month? AVG/OPS .329/.877 .313/.773 .231/.538 .262/.743 .370/.915 .276/.734 no, no it didn't. What about a 10 HR/40 2B, .300 hitter like Alberto Callaspo? .379/.978 .260/.715 .283/.765 .316/.846 .255/.638 .336/.987

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 12:54 PM) Because gap hitters will hit more HRs at the Cell, while HR hitters won't necessarily hit more doubles. But HR hitters should hit more HR since a flyout to the warning track in most parks is a HR at the Cell. You could also argue that the small outfield of US Cellular Field would limit a gap hitter's opportunities to find the gap.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 01:02 AM) Good post except for this. Crisp is another outfield hack with a very weak arm. The people who watch Crisp regularly seem to think highly of him as a defender rating him at a 4.375 out of 5, the only concerns seem to be with lack of arm strength. He also has a career 5.8 UZR/150 in CF.

QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Nov 7, 2009 -> 10:49 AM) That was a player option. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4631051 It was actually an escape clause. He signed a 2 year deal with the option to opt out of the 2nd year.

QUOTE (whitesox901 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 10:19 PM) First Basemen on the F/A Market(none are Boras agents FWIW) Honestly, I think if we get a 2005 Carl Everett like performance out of one of them or whomever our DH is, I'd be fine with it myself. His 2005 line FWIW: .251 BA., 23 HR, 87 RBI, and .311 OBP (Hopefully it would be higher though) .251/.311/.435/.745, 94 OPS+ is incredibly mediocre, Mark Teahen should be able to match that with ease. That was actually the 3rd worst OPS+ by a White Sox DH in the team's history. That sort of production out of your DH just doesn't cut it unless the rest of the offense is incredible or you're great at every other facet of the game.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 09:21 PM) I wouldn't mind Ankiel. Can he field? Not really, there's also the big question of whether or not he can hit or keep his head on straight or remain a major league ballplayer without the help of HGH.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 07:01 PM) Marte, but do we want him back? He's in the same boat as Rowand, if you're willing to take on that contract they'd probably give him away for free.

Sammy's looking um ... interesting these days.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 08:35 PM) Gold Glove recenty has been based on name value, All Star and MVP are based on production. You arent going to get an all star start or an MVP trophy if you arent one of if not the best at your position. Plenty of gold gloves are awarded every year to players based on their name(cough*jeter*cough) when there are plenty of players out there that are heads and tails better. You don't need any of this, only 1 word required: Palmeiro

QUOTE (docsox24 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 08:29 PM) Good fielder and gold glover are different animals, as are all star and mvp. Fielding Bible >>>>>>>>>>> Gold Glove And the Fielding Bible says he's an elite defender.
-
QUOTE (docsox24 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 07:11 PM) Thats insane, don't you have to actually win the award to be a gold glover? Hes not that good Well, more importantly he's won a Fielding Bible award as well as finishing 2nd and 5th.

QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 05:24 PM) I am so glad soxtalk is not like this... Quote from a poster after the article on whietsox.com It wouldn't be hard at all to re-acquire all 38 players that saw the field for the Sox in '05. McCarthy would be the only marginally difficult acquisition.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 06:12 PM) Meh a shooter is a shooter, even really good ones. Honestly I don't like playing online all that much, I hate that there are so many annoying loser 16 year old kids that I have to play with. My biggest problem is that I don't have 8 hours a day to play online an hone my skills so it's real hard for me to hold my own online with these obsessive gamers so I lose interest quick.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 06:07 PM) I only count 3 guys that can get on base with at least a .350 clip (4 if you count Flowers). Flowers has the potential to do it, but counting on a rookie to do so right now is asking alot. And to hint.. Crawford has only done that twice in his career so I excluded him. We have the OPS guys.. I just want our offense to be alittle more stable all around with some OBP guys which I hope KW addresses this offseason. Not counting .348 is incredibly dishonest. He's averaged a .350 OBP, .800 OPS and 50 SB over the past 4 seasons. He's also arguably the best defensive LF in the game having one 3 of the last 4 fielding bible awards and finishing 2nd in that 1 other year.

QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 05:59 PM) Poor overall play (fielding and at the plate) is what I read when he lost his job to Ronnie Belliard the last month of the season and in the playoffs. Belliard was hurt in the last week of the season and he STILL started and played over Hudson. Tehan at 3B and Beckham at 2B >>>> Beckham at 3B and Hudson at 2B. http://www.rotoworld.com/Content/playerpag...MLB&id=3415 Bolded: Yes because Belliard put up a 1.034 OPS for the Dodgers, he better get the start in the playoffs. Another reason why he lost playing time is because he was making an extra $10,000 for each PA in the final month of the season. Even with his struggles he put up a .350+ OBP and .710+ OPS in Sept/Oct. That's some moderately productive struggling. I'd also like to see an argument that supports all those '>'.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 05:51 PM) But he'd be playing in a much more offensive friendly park than Turner or PNC. I'm not saying he's going to put up a >900 OPS but I wouldn't be shocked if he put up an .850 or so OPS from the left side of the plate at a fair price and quite frankly that is just fine with me given our rotation. Yeah, .850 is about what he does (in the NL) and it's incredibly pedestrian for a 1B. Last year 15 first basemen put up an .870+ OPS.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 05:50 PM) You are exactly right. I would say that Konerko has a far more proven track-record than everyone but LaRoche. Konerko is widely regarded as a leader. Essentially Konerko has bigger name recognition and that could play a factor. But people pay for names. There is no question the Angels, Giants, and other teams would intrigued with the possibility of Konerko. He also has put up his numbers in the middle of the order as one of the main run producers of contending teams where as the other guys haven't. Not saying Paulie is 6 or 7M better than them, but I'd say he's better than some of them by close to that margin on a historical stand-point (in the sense that with Paulie, if he's healthy you know what you'll get). I don't think that's true at all. One call to someone familiar with the White Sox's situation and they're going to hear something very different. Aside from being old and a pretty good player (leading by example and seniority) Konerko doesn't demonstrate any of the qualities you look for in a team leader. I just don't see a team giving up talent and a substantial amount of money in order to acquire a 3rd tier name.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 05:38 PM) Is that counting his numbers for the whole year or just with Atlanta? He was a totally different player in Atlanta from Pittsburgh (which of course makes me wonder how he'll hit anywhere other than Atlanta0 Even in that one big year he had with Atlanta he demonstrated his penchant for vastly different pre/post AS break splits. With a .200 point difference in OPS between the 2. Also, success with Atlanta and failure with Pittsburgh doesn't equal success in Chicago.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 05:38 PM) At significantly less money. Factor in what he did in Atlanta and potential upside and he could be a bit better. Basically I'm alluding to the fact that you can get solid production out of LaRoche for cheap and he could end up being better than expected (just looking at what he did in Atlanta while playing for a contender). He does that every year. He sucks in the first half and puts up big numbers after the all star break. Career: 1st Half: .773 OPS 2nd Half: 909 OPS 2009: 1st Half: .784 OPS 2nd Half: .915 OPS He's been in the league long enough to where you know what you're getting from him and that's a ~.353 wOBA/.840 OPS 1B. I'm also curious as to why a team would trade for a $12M Konerko when they could just sign LaRoche themselves or say Hank Blalock, Russell Branyan, Aubrey Huff or Nick Johnson?
-
QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 04:31 PM) But your talking trading Alexei and signing a guy like Orlando Hudson for 2B, who had lost his job by season's end. You better with Alexei then without, I just don't see it. Why exactly did Hudson "lose his job"? Also, how do his overall numbers from last year stack up with the White Sox roster even with his poor final month?
-
QUOTE (soxfan-kwman @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 04:17 PM) I like the Teahen addition, but I'm a little worried about losing Getz's speed & if Pods doesn't come back we lose a lot of stolen bases-on top of speed(scoring with runners on). Podsednik is a mediocre base stealer, if you're looking to replace those SBs it shouldn't be hard to do so.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 05:05 PM) Wouldn't Marlon Byrd and say a LaRoche be a relatively realistic off-season regarding our lineup. We'd have a lineup lacking a great offensive player (Beckham might turn into one as early as next year and Quentin will hopefully be one again next year) but a lot of quality players. Plus we'd have a ton of flexibility and pretty good defense (Byrd would be a very solid RF and could play CF in a pinch). The club could than focus on Jenks/Konerko and resigning our young players to some contracts. And if we move a KOnerko we'd have a hell of a lot of flexibility for his replacement. LaRoche is a pretty mediocre player. He's a .350 wOBA 1B (one of only 5 1B under Konerko in '09) which puts him in the bottom 25% at that position. Basically, if you like a slightly lesser version of what Konerko did last year (accounting for the league switch) except from the left side and with 10% more K's then Adam's your man.
-
QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 03:41 PM) I can see us taking a flyer on Vlad if his price isn't too high. He would be an under the radar move since all eyes will be on Holliday. I know he's a free swinger, but the Sox have been trying to get contact hitters with patience for like 5 years and it never actually happens. Just my own guess though. Vlad is a full time DH at this point in his career.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) WOW so that's KW's plan. He say's it improves defense across the board but that' s assuming Beckham is better then Getz and Teahan is better then Beckham at 3rd. It's possibly true and hopefully true but at this point it's just not true. So it's a fairly young infield with PK being the lone exception and power potential of 15-20+ per man. It would be very hard for any team to take on Konerko's salary . So if he get's traded can't really expect much of anything but salary relief. Anyone think there's a chance of Paulie being non tendered ? Is that even possible and if it is, does that relieve the Sox of any contractual obligations to him ? You can only non-tender players who require a contract be tendered to them (less than 6 years of service time), Konerko is a guaranteed salary player so no, you can't non-tender him. That $12M is guaranteed no matter what.
