  1. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 12:34 PM) If true Teahan brings lefthandedness and versatility. This points to the Sox leaning more towards a rotating DH. I speculated in my thread the the Sox needed to improve the defense and 2nd base was the only logical place to upgrade. You now see this by Getz being the 1st one gone. Though Teahan isn't the upgrade defensively in the outfield I was hoping for, he's still he a big upgrade defensively over Dye. He's 28 so entering the prime of his career so maybe the Cell and that will makes his power numbers better. He is a big guy , 6'3" 210 so he could generate power. I'd like to see a Soxtalk poll seeing who thinks Beckham or Ramirez will be switching positions . I really don't see it happening but getting Teahan just adds fuel to that fire. Nest step sign Polanco . An untested rookie like Retherford cannot be the choice at 2nd base on a team with World Series aspirations. He didn't even get a September call up. People realize Polanco had a mediocre year at the plate and on the bases in '09 and is not 34 years old, right? 2B typically go down hill very fast especially when they reach their mid 30's.
  2. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 12:24 PM) I actually think this trade is the exact opposite. "Versatile defender" should only apply to players that can actually defend multiple positions relatively well. And if he is going to be penciled in at 2B like the original poster suggested then they're once again ignoring defense.
  3. QUOTE (striker62704 @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 12:16 PM) What Kenny acquired was a versatile LH bat. The guy can play like 5 positions. That means we can put Teahen at 2B and try and sign a RF. Or put Teahen in RF and try and sign a 2B. Teahen is no star but I bet he'll perform better with a change of scenery. Interesting that KW picked up another underachieving 1st rounder. That would be the M.O. of this current regime: completely ignoring defense.
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 12:07 PM) At least we're one step closer to improving our double play combo, which I still believe cost us 5-7 games due to inability to turn crucial double plays. Not if they see Teahen as an answer at 2B.
  5. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 12:00 PM) Is that really true? Can someone show us some defensive metrics? I seem to remember Teahan being a solid 3b...my guess is the numbers say he isn't, which is why you have the opinion that you do. Could he really be any worse at 3rd than Gordon? 2009 UZR/150: 3B: -7.5 RF: -23.8 For his career he's a -8.9 at 3B. He's bad. Gordon was really coming into his own defensively at the end of '09 his UZR had been down around -6.0 last year and he finished the year at -1.0 or just about average.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 11:53 AM) Good point guys, now I have no idea who leads off for this team next year. Scott Podsednik returns and you see a rotation of players next year with no everyday DH.
  7. How versatile are you really when you suck just about everywhere you play on the field? Real hard to get excited about Mark Teahen, he doesn't do a whole hell of a lot well.
  8. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 4, 2009 -> 08:44 AM) I thought players couldnt be traded until after the World Series. Normally Major League Baseball will suppress the announcement of trades during the World Series - they don't want anything taking attention away from the games - but it's perfectly legal to make a deal.

  11. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 03:04 PM) I didnt think his season was that bad He finished the year 20th in wOBA out of the 25 qualified 1B in baseball while being the 8th highest paid at the position.
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 3, 2009 -> 12:29 PM) Damon can't field just like Pods. Is he an upgrade? No. He'd be a significant offensive upgrade.
  13. QUOTE (everafan @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 07:34 PM) Has everyone forgotten that Boras is Ramirez' agent? Ramirez is already under contract in 2010 (he has until Nov. 10th to decide whether of not to opt out of the 1 year, $20M remaining on his deal) and would be acquired via trade so unless Manny demands additional compensation to convince him to waive his no trade clause Boras shouldn't enter into the equation.
  14. Priority #1 this offseason: dump Tyler Flowers.
  15. QUOTE (GREEDY @ Nov 1, 2009 -> 10:32 AM) Who is a better defender: Hermida or Ross? Anyone have some sort of sick pain fetish and watch the Marlins this year? In the "By Fans, For Fans" poll Ross is currently rated a 3.94 out of 5 (2nd highest on the team) and Hermida a 2.26 (lowest rated everyday RF in baseball).
  16. Buehrle dominated the voting Where the Panel Ranked Him: Bill James: - (Greinke #1) BIS Video Scouts: 1 Hal Richman: 4 (Santana #1) Joe Posnanski: 1 John Dewan: 1 Mat Olkin: 1 Peter Gammons: 2 (Greinke #1) Rob Neyer: 1 Tango Fan Poll: 1 Todd Radcliffe: 1 Total Points: 86 - Buehrle 61 - Greinke 51 - Santana 50 - Pineiro 39 - Bergesen 37 - Garland 36 - Cook 30 - Marquis 30 - Duke 16 - Oswalt
  17. QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 31, 2009 -> 11:27 AM) About time. Mark's always been a great fielder and it's nice to see him win an actual award that's actually objective... He finished 4th in 2007, Bill James and Rob Neyer had him as the 2nd best defensive pitcher in the game (James voted Garland #1 and Neyer went with Santana who ended up winning the award). He also finished 3rd in '06 behind Kenny Rogers and Greg Maddux. One of the main reasons Dewan started the Fielding Bible awards was because of the historical significance of a top 10 list, years from now you'll be able to get a good grasp on a player's defensive ability by turning to the number of times he showed up in the top 10. You don't get this with the GG awards since only the winner is made public.

The Audition is a pretty f***ed up Japanese horror/torture porn film, it's a damn good watch if you're into that sort of thing.
  19. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 30, 2009 -> 06:50 PM) So do these guys just go off of UZR? For one; the Fielding Bible is written by John Dewan, the man who developed the plus/minus system believed by many to be on equal grounds as UZR, just not as widely available, so right out the bat - no. The fielding bible awards are determined by a panel of 10 experts chosen by John Dewan using a 10 point scale (100 points possible). They use whatever criteria they see fit to determine the finest defenders at each position and given the wide range of baseball ideology at play here (Gammons and James are basically polar opposites) you're going to have very different determining factors within the panel. It's a fantastic resource that basically came about because the Gold Glove sucks and Dewan felt something needed to be done.
  20. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 30, 2009 -> 06:49 PM) Yo K, I understand what wOBA is. What's considered below average, average and above average? It was designed with OBP standards in mind so .400 is great, .340 is about average and .300 is poor. The league average last season was .329 and has fallen around .330 for the past decade.
  21. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Oct 30, 2009 -> 04:51 PM) Why don't we just try and develop our own players from the system instead of trading for every non-performing prospect of any othr org? Yes because those sorts of deals never work out for the Sox.
  22. QUOTE (beck72 @ Oct 30, 2009 -> 04:49 PM) My main point was that as a 1 year stop gap, until Danks is ready, Hermida isn't worth the price in terms of talent. While I wasn't talking about having Kotsay as a starter, he would be a better fit for the sox as a part time player, who could play an occasional RF, and see time at 1b, and prob. post better numbers than Hermida [albiet with less PA's, as Kotsay isn't a fulltime player anymore]. I've talked before about seeing what Coco Crisp is looking at in terms of $, and if the price is right, a 1 yr deal wouldn't be bad. He would allow the sox flexibility in the OF, with the ability to play LF and CF, with Quentin DHing, and Rios moving to RF at times. Now you've used the word probable and that just strikes me as foolish. Regardless of what your original point was there's no good reason for me to believe Kotsay will outproduce Hermida in 2010 given that it's been 6 years since he eclipsed Hermida's 2009 wOBA.
  23. QUOTE (beck72 @ Oct 30, 2009 -> 03:53 PM) Hermida had an OPS of .729 in 2008 and an OPS of .740 in 2009. Kotsay had an OPS of .783 with the sox. It's not that much of a stretch to say Kotsay may out hit HErmida in 2010. Hermida hasn't for power for 2 yrs. And his defense isn't good. That wonderful 127 PA sample size aside Kotsay is 8 years older, also a poor outfielder and hasn't posted a .320+ wOBA season since 2005 meanwhile Hermida has posted wOBA's of .372, .321 and .329 since 2007 when he played his first full season in the majors at age 23. If I had to put money on who would be the more productive bat in 2010 I know who I'd put my money on and it's not the 34 year old who I doubt would even hold up physically if given a full season's worth of PA.
  24. QUOTE (striker62704 @ Oct 30, 2009 -> 02:20 PM) According to Cots contracts, both AJ and Linebrink have no trade rights. Unless I'm reading this wrong. http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/c...-white-sox.html Well most everyone seems to be under the impression that the limited no trade clause that Pierzynski received with his deal in December of '05 carried over to the contract he signed in October of '07. He'll receive 10/5 no trade protection 72 days into the season so I'm not particularly worried about it.
  25. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Oct 29, 2009 -> 01:39 PM) I hope we don't go through that again. He lost his starting job and we have a need for him? Hudson did struggle over the final month and a half of the season but his decreased playing time had a lot to do with Ronnie Belliard's outstanding September (1.022 OPS) and the fact that his incentives were kicking in so he was making an extra $10,000 per plate appearance. Even with his struggles he still put up an OBP higher than Podsednik and his 2.9 WAR would have been the highest on the Sox in 2009.
