QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 25, 2009 -> 09:27 AM) Let's see, The club is talking about shutting down a few players, but K-Dubya says don't quit. I see Thome out west, but K-Dubya says don't quit. Given that they had 5 seemingly starting caliber players for only 4 positions, I fail to see how removing the oldest and least versatile of the bunch could be seen as throwing in the towel. Especially when the player struggling the most at the time was reportedly upset with the situation.

QUOTE (jphat007 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 10:25 PM) Nor can he hit with RISP. If Jason Nix is our fulltime starter next year we're screwed. We could be screwed anyway, but still based on 65 AB in his first year in the big leagues?
-
QUOTE (WCSox @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 08:03 PM) If Pods hits next year like he did this year, he won't be difficult to watch at all. He will in my mind. Regardless of his league average OBP he's still a very bad baseball player. And that's taking an enormous leap of faith and assuming that he'll match his current production while at the same time avoiding the disabled list.

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 07:05 PM) I really think Abreu will be the FA signing this offseason and play right field. I'd love him as the DH but he's about on par with Dye in the outfield so I want none of that.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 06:57 PM) Joe Cowley is stating everywhere that Figgins will be out of the Sox price range. I couldn't agree more, as he's going to get so overpaid if the Yanks are actually interested in him. Yep, he's on the Score daily and says the same damn thing every day. Basically: you better start getting used to Scotty Pods. It could be real tough to watch this team next year.

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 06:53 PM) Scott Merkin's twitter says : http://twitter.com/scottmerkin/status/4327849217 Someone should either A.) show Kenny the standings as we are in the bottom half of the league or B.) give him a refresher course on the compensatory pick rules. Though Cowley mentioned this quote today on B&B but his version had Kenny worried about the $$$ price of the top free agents.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 06:47 PM) Looks likw my memory wasn't that far off. Anyone got a link to the old story? I would go digging, but I'm on my blackberry right now.. Just off the top of my head i believe it was the deadline in '04, it was pretty obvious that Delgado's days were numbered in Toronto as he was about to become a free agent and the Jays weren't going to pay top dollar for him coming off a down year in which he spent time on the DL, he promised Jay's management that he wouldn't use his no-trade to block any potential deals but when the Sox made a push to acquire him he did exactly that.
-
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 06:42 PM) I believe so. I think it was between Toronto and the Mets, and they just offered a ton more money than the Sox. However, now that you say it, I do sort of remember a story where he bashed Chicago in some way or another. I could be way off.. Either way, things can change. The Sox and Blue Jays had a deal in place that would have sent Delgado here but Carlos used his no-trade clause to block the deal. I can't remember his exact words but he really didn't want to play in Chicago.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 06:37 PM) Didn't Delgado turn down a deal here? He also made some disparaging comments about the city of Chicago after vetoing that deal.
-
QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 04:27 PM) Why, are they playing in Japan? Mike MacDougal will likely finish the 2009 season with more major league saves than Carlos Marmol.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 12:49 PM) I'd have to dig up the post, but as I showed earlier in this thread, his year is not reflective of a pitcher in decline. He had a bad month in, I think July, then was nasty in August. September I'd have to look. I agree he needs a conditioning routine, and some offseason work, but I think he can be had for a reasonable price this offseason via arb, and its just not at all easy to find a reliable closer. If Jenks is kept up on conditioning this winter, I'd bet he has a very good year in 2010. He'll get $7M-$8M so it depends on your definition of the word "reasonable".

According to Cowley he "popped it in stretch", whatever the f*** that means.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 22, 2009 -> 08:59 PM) 6 scoreless, 2 hit innings for Greinke vs. the Red Sox tonight. Yeah, that lowers his ERA to 2.08 on the year. With 14 IP and 1 ER over his final 2 outings he'll finish with a 1.99 ERA With 9.1 IP and 0 ER over his final 2 outings he'll finish with a 1.99 ERA If he does what he did tonight over his final 2 outings: 12 IP and 0 ER he'll finish with a 1.97 ERA.

I fully expect to see Crawford locked up to another long term deal this offseason by the Rays. It's all lined up for them to do so.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Sep 22, 2009 -> 05:47 PM) I would've agreed last year, but Upton's having a terrible season and that will undoubtedly lower his trade value. Not to mention his propensity for laziness and mental mistakes. Crawford is going into his free agent season and has refused to play CF regularly to this point in his career where as Upton is 3 years away from free agency, an elite defensive CF, going into his age 25 season and is just a more talented ballplayer (even at his best to date Crawford's production isn't mind blowing) so on paper there's definitely good odds that he holds higher value. It all depends on Upton's shoulder really, there's a belief that the offseason surgery he had to repair it still remains an issue and has held him back this year. If teams buy into this and believe it's something he can recover from 100% then he'll fetch you more than Crawford on the trade market. I don't know who the source is for this (it says Chicago Tribune, so that sort of narrows down the field of morons) but the entire point behind dealing Kazmir was so that they could afford to keep Carl Crawford.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 21, 2009 -> 11:45 PM) When does Greinke end up on the Yankees/Red Sox/big payroll team? Either by signing or trade. Well they locked him up through 2012 about 8 months ago and he pretty much is their franchise right now so you'd HOPE he'd stick around for at least the next 3 years. You probably can't say the same for Felix, however. There's a damn good chance he only makes 3 more starts in a Mariners uniform before being dealt to a big market this offseason. He has 2 years of arbitration eligibility remaining so his trade value will be significantly higher this winter as opposed to next (much like Bedard 2 years ago, kind of ironic I suppose) when he'd be only 6 months away from an ungodly pay raise on the open market. He'll be coming off his age 25 season when he hits free agency in 2012 and pending injury he could be the best pitcher in the game at that point, I can't even imagine what kind of money he's going to be looking at.
-
I agree the Cardinals are a great team, hell they have the TWO best 1-2 punches in the game which is just frightening but that Derosa trade isn't a clear cut winner, he's been just awful in a Cardinals uniform.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 21, 2009 -> 08:52 PM) Would Greinke not winning the CY be more of an abomination than Santana not getting it in 2005? I'd say yes. Only if it's anyone but Felix beating him out.
-
Greinke's 204 ERA+ is the 29th highest ever for a starting pitcher and 10th highest since 1990. 2nd highest by a starter not named Clemens, Martinez or Maddux since 1990 5th highest by a starter not named Clemens, Martinez or Maddux since 1950 (Gibson, Gooden, Brown, Guidry ahead of him) 7th highest by an AL starter since 1950 (only 3 pitchers ahead of him: Martinez (3), Clemens (2), Guidry (1)) Yeah, he's getting into rarefied air

Zambrano: Sox One of Three Teams He Would Go To
Kalapse replied to LVSoxFan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (rangercal @ Sep 21, 2009 -> 05:06 PM) It's not your money or my money, so who cares? Because there's only so much of it to go around and spending $53m of a probable $90-$100m payroll on the starting rotation alone is monumentally stupid. It doesn't matter who's money it is, when there's a fixed amount it available for a given season it's an issue everyone should keep in mind when contemplating possible roster moves. -
Zambrano: Sox One of Three Teams He Would Go To
Kalapse replied to LVSoxFan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (rangercal @ Sep 21, 2009 -> 04:10 PM) Peavy Buehrle Danks Floyd Z Do it! That's a $53M rotation in 2010. Talk about spending your resources unwisely. There are few players in baseball more overpaid than Carlos Zambrano especially if you move him to the AL. -
It's going to have a created character with his name, you're probably better off with NHL 10, though you could probably find The Show used for just over $20 which is a good buy. I don't know about you but my interest in sports games general changes with the season, I haven't played The Show in about a month and a half but I picked up NHL 10 a few days ago and expect to play it quite a bit over the next few months with a good chance that I don't pick The Show back up again until just before spring training when I start to get that itch. If you do pick up The Show be sure to download some good fan created rosters from the roster vault. You can get rosters that include nearly full minor league rosters for AA and AAA teams. The Roster vault is a better bet for more realistic and full rosters than the official Show releases.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 9, 2009 -> 05:14 PM) Random math interlude: ERA of Wainright + ERA of Carpenter = 4.75 ERA of Lincecum + ERA of Cain = 4.85. Of course, this year St. Louis is playing like a more difficult park for people, but it's always hard to evaluate those and S.F. isn't exactly known as a hitter's park. And I'll vote against Pujols. That ball he hit off of Lidge in 2005 landed last week and killed my dog. Combined ERA+ for Lincecum and Cain = 355 Combined ERA+ for Carpenter and Wainwright: 354 Yeah, that's a dead heat.
-
QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 12:46 AM) Cain & Lincecum...but not by much. Don't forget that both Carpenter and Wainwright have rings. With Carpenter being at the top of that '06 Cardinals staff and Wainwright shutting down opponents in the closer's role. Neither Cain nor Lincecum has ever even made a postseason appearance.
