  1. Just remember Carl Everett >>>>> Jim Thome especially when it comes to hitting prowess (at least Everett could take the ball the other way) and defense from the DH position. We'd have won at least 2 more Championships if it weren't for Thome.
  2. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 12:08 AM) I hope KW calls Washington in the offseason and see what they want for Dunn's 10m and one year remaining $12M. He made $8M this year.
  3. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 12:02 AM) I have been napping all night, so this is brand new to me. I haven't read any of this thread yet, but I assume this means we re-sign Dye for DH. I do not like that. I don't think it means that at all. Both will file for free agency at the end of the season just as they would have had Thome not been traded. The options haven't really changed.
  4. QUOTE (Pumpkin Escobar @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 11:54 PM) Thats what I figured but I think Jim wants to play next season and I think the Dodgers can get away with offering him arbitration because I don't see Thome valuing the 13 million and 100 at bats over a chance to get 450 at bats. Who knows... If the Dodgers offer Thome arbitration and he declines he becomes a much less desirable free agent since any team that signs him would have to give up a pick all the more incentive for Thome to accept. But beyond that do you really think the Dodgers would risk having to pay a 39 year old pinch hitter $13M? I don't.
  5. QUOTE (Pumpkin Escobar @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 11:46 PM) Was it safe too assume that due to the climate of the economy we would've elected not to offer Thome arbitration? I believe Thome is Type-A status and I am a little surprised we dealt that luxury away unless we just realy are that classy of an organization where we felt he was owed a chance - at the expense of draft picks for us since I do not believe Mr. Fuller was a first round or even 5th round talent. Just curious if that was what was going on there? I'd assume the Dodgers will offer him arbitration because it's gotta be a 0% chance he'd accept it if he wants to play full-time next season. Thome made $13M this year meaning he'd get about that in arbitration if he were to accept. Jim Thome is not worth $13M at the point in his career, to this team in this economy. They wouldn't even have thought about offering him arb.
  6. QUOTE (Reddy @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 11:18 PM) oh i understand that, but nonetheless, couldn't be easy. I guess when you're 38 years old, you're headed to the hall of fame, there's only 31 games left in the year, you're a ring away from making your career complete and you have the opportunity to go from a team that's 6 down to a team that's 6 up in the standings such decisions become easier.
  7. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 11:17 PM) If Kenny actually got something for Contreras, I applaud him. If he was able to get rid of Jose, why couldn't he get rid of Linebrink...? There's a $10M+ difference.
  8. QUOTE (Reddy @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 11:16 PM) i'm feeling really bad for Thome right now. you know he said yes because it was what the org. wanted from him even though it meant a sacrifice of his own playing time. not many would do the same... Jim Thome just gained 12 games in the standings. He's going to have a damn good chance at getting a ring.
  9. QUOTE (b-Rye @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 11:10 PM) 20+ LOSSES. Tigers, Jays, RedSox have all done it. They have no place on the team. Bad contract for bad aged talent. They can't keep DLing these guys to get them in the minors. Add Colon to that list to. So what do you actually gain by releasing either? Other than, you know, showing you have no class as an organization.
  10. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 10:52 PM) Seattle, has a decent shot too. They've gotten the worst production out of their DH of any contender this season (tied with DET, even though the Mariners aren't really contenders). Griffey, Thome and Sweeney all splitting time at DH? That would just be bizarre. I sure as hell hope it's not the Mariners, they're going nowhere this year. I honestly don't think he'd agree to go to Seattle. It makes little sense. He has a much better chance of making the playoffs with the Sox.
  11. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 10:41 PM) What did the sox get back.. is the million dollar question? Someone should change the title soon too. My guess is nothing of note, this is a dump to free up some room on the roster to play our 4 OF and young catcher while doing Jim a favor in the process.
  12. Yeesh, I didn't think it would but this actually hurts.
  13. QUOTE (b-Rye @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 10:35 PM) i wonder if its the tigers.. they got a dh? i read they had scouts there tonight. the would be f'd up. Cabrera, Huff, Thames, Ordonez, Granderson, Inge, Guillen and only 6 positions to play them. They're rather deep.
  14. Well if Jim Thome does get dealt at least I'll have a contending AL team to get behind for the rest of the season.
  15. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 06:46 PM) Paulie should stay. #1. Who's gonna replace him next year if you get rid of Dye and Thome as well. #2. He's not having a bad year. #3. Harder to trade since he's 10/5 and under contract until 2011. Out of the 21 qualified 1B in baseball this year Konerko has the 18th highest OPS+ but is the 8th highest paid and tied with 2 others for 2nd oldest.
  16. Odds are each of Dye, Thome, Linebrink, Dotel and Konerko already cleared waivers earlier this month.
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 04:47 PM) We haven't swept the Tigers or Twins all year and now we will when we're playing our worst baseball of the year? June 29th - July 1st, 2004 was the lat time the Sox swept the Twins in the Twinky Dome.
  18. QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 02:05 PM) Yeah it sucks when a catcher can throw guys out on the bases. God, that's so annoying. Pierzynski's CS% this year: 21% Castro's CS% with the Sox: 22%
  19. QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 10:04 AM) So he noted that Hudson isn't on the 40-man, but he didn't note that Flowers isn't either? Stone thinks he's a lot smarter than he really is. Someone will have to be dropped from the 40-man when Flowers contract is purchased from Charlotte. My guess is Colon is an easy move to make. According to Stone the Sox will get 2 first round picks as compensation when they lose Dye to free agency because that's what happens when you lose a player to free agency. No mention of categorizing type A and B free agents or the fact that the Sox would have to offer him arbitration, something they probably won't do. It's just a forgone conclusion that they'll get a couple picks.
  20. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 30, 2009 -> 01:21 PM) That's not a very good statement about the 3rd basemen we've had in your time as a fan (and I know you have been a Sox fan for quite a while). It's definitely an indictment on the team's inability to fill the 3B position with a competent everyday player. Playing for the Sox from 1965 to 2009, played 70% of games at 3B, requiring at least 100 G, sorted by greatest OPS+: (100 = league average) OPS+ GAMES 1. 117 1254 Robin Ventura 2. 115 976 Bill Melton 3. 114 329 Eric Solderholm 4. 101 201 Herbert Perry 5. 93 798 Joe Crede 6. 90 410 Vance Law 7. 85 196 Josh Fields
  21. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Aug 30, 2009 -> 09:13 AM) Understood, but you could do worse, teams have done worse. Just in the past two years Oakland took an oft injured Thomas back, and paid a juiced out Giambi. They hit for power, but under the circumstances they were signed, it was going to be a surprise if they produced. It's semantics really but Jason Giambi was actually their starting 1B with Jack Cust taking the everyday DH duties and I don't think there's much of an argument to be made that Joe Crede is more valuable at the plate than Cust. Sure you could do worse than Crede if you're totally incompetent (Bavasi, Vidro) but you also should be able to do a whole lot better without really even trying. A league average DH has a .340 OBP and .790 OPS this season.
  22. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Aug 29, 2009 -> 10:28 PM) No one would be willing to find any, even a part time DH spot? That's an incredibly weak DH. All of his value comes from his ability to play an above average thirdbase.
