QUOTE (joeynach @ Aug 3, 2009 -> 09:02 PM) Cots baseball contracts has the sox payroll just over $96 Mil. So ur # here on soxtalk is not that far off at all. My number is right on, the difference between what I have and Cots has is simply a bi-product of different definitions of the word "payroll". I included every guaranteed commitment the Sox had to players as of the start of the season simply to make such data easily available in one place. When US Today puts together their payroll numbers they're not including everything.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 3, 2009 -> 12:34 AM) Kalapse, Who would you compare Gordon to, if you had to? His approach to hitting mirrors that of Derek Jeter though I could easily see him striking out less, walking more, stealing less bases but hitting for a bit more HR power than Derek as he fills out. He's a frighteningly good hitter.

QUOTE (Stocking @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 10:27 PM) someone do some math for me please, whats becks stats since hitting that walk off against the cubs? .311/.374/.486/.860 in 207 PA this season .335/.396/.524/.920 in his last 193 PA (remove the first 4 games of his career) .374/.416/.585/1.001 in 138 PA since his walkoff vs the Cubs

Crawford has mentioned in the past that he does not want to play CF, he's comfortable in left.
-
He's making it fairly obvious that the organization sees Dan Hudson has the top pitching prospect in the organization and did even when Poreda was around. Hudson was a near untouchable at the deadline. Hahn is a great interview, very honest and really says the kind of things you like to hear from the front office.
-
On the Score just now Rick Hahn mentioned Dan Hudson's name as a possible option to make one of those 3 starts in August required out of the 5th starter. So I guess he's an option for this year.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 06:13 PM) Seriously, Alderson? Ugh, this just makes me want to trade Lexi even more. Yep, first thing that came to mind.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 03:46 PM) Holy s***, let's not get carried away here. lol. Personally, I love the way he defines a "Mauer" type player. I envision John Danks posting a sub 3.40 ERA with 12+ wins, a left handed Tim Lincecum if you will.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 04:23 PM) One would think he has a chance at 2/$7 M or 1/$4 M....MAYBE Exactly and why would he take 2/$7M when he can just accept the club's offer of arbitration and guarantee himself $6.5M for 2010? One more thing: Dotel has made $28M over the course of his career, assuming he's not a complete moron he should be more than financially secure for the rest of his life. Speaking of security: there's something to be said for a guaranteed salary of $6.5M rather than taking your chances and shopping around on the open market over the winter looking for a few million more on a multi-year deal.

Is there a lamer/more childish nickname in sports than "the Yankmees"?
-
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 09:47 AM) Two years at $5M is what he will be looking for rather than taking a one year deal at $6M, he is 36 and is only getting older meaning it will be more difficult for him to sign a contract after next season and the season after that. If he was 26 then the one year deal makes sense as he can only improve his value from that point forward, at 36 his value is heading south and this is his final opportunity to capitalize. The Sox will not likely take the chance though and deal him before the deadline since they have seemingly acquired his heir apparent in Tony Pena. You mean 2 years, $10M total? He's not getting anywhere near that.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 01:02 PM) No I don't. I think I've watched the DBags a little more than you Kalapse...and sorry I'm not going to base my comment on pages of statistical data. I'm just not impressed with ANYBODY in the DBacks pen. There's my logic. Yes, I'm sure you know exactly how much baseball I watch, hell of an argument. So what don't you like about Qualls? Give me a little run down on the guy since you've seen so much of him.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 06:09 PM) Wow, Richard puts up two great starts against divisional foes and gets replaced by Colon. I don't like it one bit. I don't think we'll see Richard in the pen on August 1st. Either he'll be traded or Colon will be replaced with a veteran lefty via trade (Rhodes, Beimel, etc).
-
QUOTE (Wanne @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 05:34 PM) This whole thread is "mind-bottling".... The DBags pen has been atrocious this year...so we take 2 of their relievers?!?!?....K. And I really have a hard time believing they'd deal Haren...especially given the condition that Webb's shoulder is currently. That is unless they want to completely drive away whatever fan base they've managed to hang on to. The Padres have the worst offense in the majors, does that mean you wouldn't want Adrian Gonzalez? The Indians have maybe the worst starting rotation in the AL, does that mean you wouldn't want Cliff Lee? See the flaw in your logic?

Brian Anderson traded to Red Sox for Mark Kotsay
Kalapse replied to Jimmywins1's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 04:28 PM) Darin Erstad II Pretty much. Good to see Anderson finally removed from the White Sox organization. I'm just glad the saga is finally over. -
QUOTE (Special K @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 04:52 PM) One word: security One bad year for an old Octavio could cost him a few million the next if he is a free agent instead of signed to a multi-year deal. It's all about the dollars. Like I said, the money is going to be about the same. It's not like he's going to get $4M+ more on a multi-year deal. There's no reason for me to believe that a 36 year old Octavio Dotel is going to find a team willing to drop $8M+ on him on a 2 year deal in this economy. Octavio Dotel could make more through arbitration than Juan Cruz (30 years old, coming off a 176 ERA+, 1.26 WHIP, 12.4 K/9 season) got on the open market on a 2 year deal this past offseason. So like I asked originally. Assuming the money is about equal (which it will be) how is a 2 year deal more desirable than a 1 year deal? It's not.
-
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) A 36 year old Dotel is likely to decline arbitration though to hold out for a multi-year deal, which makes his Type A free agent status come into play and adds value in a trade. Do you seriously believe there's a team out there that's going to guarantee him $7M+ in a multi-year deal? Juan Cruz just got less than that on a 2 year this past offseason. So Octavio MIGHT be able to get 2 years, $3.5M per year or just accept arbitration and take his 1 year, $6.5M-$7M deal and look for another decent one next offseason. There's really no reason to decline in my mind. I fail to see how a 2 year deal is more desirable than a 1 year deal if the total dollars are about equal.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 10:38 PM) Josh Willingham with a decent night... hit only 2 grand slams. Ironic that Fernando Tatis also hit a grand slam today.
-
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 09:07 PM) Okay, you can officially cross off Sherrill because it makes no sense for us to give up value that of Elbert (probably more) for Sherrill. This should come as a surprise to no one. Of course they're going to be looking for a big return on Sherrill, he's proved to be a damn good closer in the American League. He NEVER made any sense for the Sox.

QUOTE (tommy @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 07:16 PM) What do you know, Jermaine just hit a single to right. First time all year.

MARK BUEHRLE PITCHES THE 18TH PERFECT GAME IN HISTORY
Kalapse replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (son of a rude @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 07:08 PM) That happens on all the sports/white sox forums i go to. The other fans always say something like "congrats to mark buehrle on the perfect game. he is a great guy, he deserves it. too bad that senile moron announcer had to ruin it." although i am not the biggest hawk fan, i thought his call of the perfect game was pretty good. It more than adequately represented the pure elation of Sox fans everywhere at that very moment but from a technical standpoint it was terrible. I can definitely see why non-sox fans would find the call excruciating. -
I'll probably be in the chat tonight and I best not be alone.

Fangraphs has been getting a ton of exposure of late, I'm starting to hear it mentioned all over the media, it's just a shame that 95% of those who reference something on that site either A.) misuse it or B.) really don't know what the hell any of it means. At least they're making an attempt I suppose.

QUOTE (beckham15 @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 06:20 PM) for some reason i have a good feeling about fields batting in the dome....c'mon guys lets start this series off on the right foot! Career .323/.432/.677/1.110 line w/ 6 extra base hits in 31 AB in the Metrodome, it's definitely his favorite park. Of course .556/.667/1.444/2.111 of that came in his 9 AB there in '07.
