  1. Bartolo Colon has the 5th highest OPS against of any starter with as many IP as he does in the AL this season. Oh and his runs/9IP (basically ERA minus the E) is 6.06 seeing as how he has 13 unearned runs this season. Hard to have much faith in him.
  2. QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 03:31 PM) I've been a frequent visitor to a couple of Cleveland boards. There is no mention of this rumor... and suffice it to say that the Tribe is looking for a MUCH bigger haul if they are going to move Lee. Just take a look at the source.
  3. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 03:26 PM) yeah i think that dropping Thome, Contreras and Dotel will save the Sox $16 million next year. Contreras and Dotel alone cost $16M. Thome's another $7.5M (assuming all we got from the Phillies was the $22M in '06, that's $5.5M a year). Buehrle $14M Konerko $12M Pierzynski $6.25M Linebrink $5M Floyd $2.75M Thornton $2.25M Team Option Viciedo $1.25M Ramirez $1.1M Dye $1M Buyout Total: $45.6M Arbitration Eligible: Jenks, Wise, Pena, Anderson, Carrasco, Danks, Quentin
  4. QUOTE (joeynach @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 12:18 PM) I think out of necissity we dont lose dotel. Plus he seems headed to be a type a free agent so we would get a draft pick for losing him at the end of the year. Yeah, not so much. I can't think of a reason why Octavio Dotel wouldn't just accept arbitration and guarantee himself $6.5M+ for 2010.

  6. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 12:37 AM) Until this year, I don't see how Haren has ever had ace-type production. Someone enlighten me. Top ERA+ in '07 & '08 w/ 400+ IP: 1.) 152 CC Sabathia 2.) 148 Brandon Webb 3.) 146 Johan Santana 4.) 139 Cole Hamels 5.) 137 Han Haren 6.) 135 Roy Halladay Top WHIP in '07 & '08 w/ 400+ IP: 1.) 1.10 Cole Hamels 2.) 1.11 Johan Santana 3.) 1.13 CC Sabathia 3.) 1.13 James Shields 5.) 1.14 Roy Halladay 6.) 1.17 Dan Haren Top K/BB in '07 & '08 w/ 400+ IP: 1.) 4.79 CC Sabathia 2.) 4.53 James Shields 3.) 4.19 Dan Haren 4.) 3.97 CC Sabathia 5.) 3.89 Cole Hamels 6.) 3.83 Johan Santana Top ERA+ from '07 to date w/ 500+ IP: 1.) 150 Dan Haren 2.) 147 Tim Lincecum 3.) 144 Johan Santana 4.) 143 CC Sabathia 5.) 141 Roy Halladay 6.) 131 Josh Beckett Top WHIP from '07 to date w/ 500+ IP: 1.) 1.09 Dan Haren 2.) 1.12 Roy Halladay 3.) 1.14 CC Sabathia 3.) 1.14 Johan Santana 5.) 1.15 Cole Hamels 6.) 1.16 Josh Beckett Top K/BB from '07 to date w/ 500+ IP: 1.) 4.73 Dan Haren 2.) 4.39 Josh Beckett 3.) 4.37 Roy Halladay 4.) 4.16 James Shields 5.) 4.11 CC Sabathia 6.) 4.08 Javier Vazquez I'd say that's some elite company. Did I mention he's currently 28 years old? Bonus Content (lets go with a 4.5 year span): Top ERA+ from '05 to date w/ 900+ IP: 1.) 150 Johan Santana 2.) 146 Roy Halladay 3.) 141 Brandon Webb 4.) 134 Roy Oswalt 4.) 134 CC Sabathia 6.) 131 Dan Haren Top WHIP from '05 to date w/ 900+ IP: 1.) 1.07 Johan Santana 2.) 1.09 Roy Halladay 3.) 1.14 Dan Haren 4.) 1.17 CC Sabathia 5.) 1.20 Brandon Webb 6.) 1.21 Roy Oswalt Top K/BB from '05 to date w/ 900+ IP: 1.) 4.45 Roy Halladay 2.) 4.19 Johan Santana 3.) 4.14 Dan Haren 4.) 3.91 Javier Vazquez 5.) 3.69 CC Sabathia 6.) 3.60 Aaron Harang
  7. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 07:40 PM) Bobby has had 12 appearances this year going 1-2-3. Last year he had 19. Bobby Jenks 1-2-3 saves over the past 2 years: 40% Joe Nathan 1-2-3 saves over the past 2 years: 43% Oh so often do memories lie and sample sizes suck. That's why we have play index.
  8. QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 07:08 PM) There you go. Just proves the quality of that trade, huh. That 4.1 IP sample size proves absolutely nothing.
  9. Roy Halladay is not going anywhere.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 05:04 PM) Haren has simply been better than Floyd and there's no real reason to think he'll stop being better than him. He's also more expensive than Floyd, so you don't give up much more than Floyd to get him. But if you have the salary flexibility it's a trade you consider. Considerably better and he's only 2 years older.
  11. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 04:15 PM) Sox want a left handed arm for the pen to go with Thornton. Then Joe Beimel (WAS) and Arthur Rhodes (CIN) make a whole hell of a lot more sense than trading for a closer.
  12. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 02:37 PM) Yeah, so Cowley is just blowing smoke out his ass. Williams and company have never made a big trade within the division, and the only team they've ever traded with is Kansas City. There is no way that they'd want to ship prospects that they could end up playing 18 times a year, and there is no way that Cleveland wants to face Lee 6 times before he becomes a free agent. I doubt Kenny would think twice about sending a few prospects to a division rival if it meant landing Cliff Lee and his fiscally accommodating contract ($9M team option for next year). I definitely think Shapiro would be more hesitant to make such a deal (assuming he sees his club at a competitor next year).
  13. QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Jul 25, 2009 -> 03:01 PM) Surely Maggs' option would vest. Are their contracts really all that different? Yeah, he'd get there with ease. He's only 146 PA away from guaranteeing himself $18M next year and if the trade were made today and he got 4 PA a game over the Cubs' final 67 games of the season he'd finish with 579 PA on the year, that means he'd need only 501 PA next year to guarantee himself another $15M in 2011. Bradley's due $21M in '10/'11, the $6.5M - $7.5M still due to Magglio this year and the $18M he'd make next year would lead to a net financial loss for the Cubs even while subtracting a year of salary (assuming no cash trades hands).
  14. The Orioles will be asking for Closer value for Sherrill where as the Sox would be using him as their 2nd lefty out of the pen. Not a great fit for the Sox, you'd definitely have to overpay. It's like the Twins trading for Victor Martinez to be their backup catcher (extreme example), he's only going to start maybe 15 games for them the rest of the way but the Indians don't give a s*** they'd be asking for talent in return equivalent to that of a top 5 catcher in the game of baseball.
  15. Is a 36 year old Dotel getting $6.5M+ guaranteed in this economy? Because that's what he'll get at a minimum if he accepts arbitration. Keep in mind Juan Cruz got 2 years, $6M from the Royals this past offseason, very comparable pitcher only 5 years younger. If the interested ballclub isn't willing to risk offering him arbitration (something the Sox probably won't do) then his value takes a big hit.
  16. QUOTE (Pumpkin Escobar @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 10:03 AM) I saw that. I think Tim Brown is an idiot but that is for another day. I wonder what the interest is from several standpoints. Where would he play this season? He is a Boras guy. Do we think he'll find his Colorado stroke in another hitter friendly park? If he can - I'm all for getting him in the offseason at a cheap price. The two parks are not one in the same. Balls fly out of the Cell but it's a pretty small outfield so there isn't much room in the gaps or in front or behind the outfielders, this limits doubles and bloop singles but increases HR. Coors has a very large outfield with plenty of room in the gaps and in front of and behind the outfielders plus it's 5,200 feet above sea level so the ball tends to fly out as well, it's a paradise for all types of hitters and Matt Holliday's hybrid hitting style was perfectly suited for Coors.
  17. QUOTE (GO CHI SOX! @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 03:00 PM) Seems to me Oakland got a better return for Holliday than what they gave up in the offseason. That was kinda the whole point.
  18. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:30 PM) Does BA have the speed to get to the wall that quick? I think it takes a unique amount of speed to get there, plus a great jump. For at least one moment, his particular skill set got us out of a spot. Anderson doesn't play nearly as shallow as Wise (dude thinks he's Andruw Jones), so even if you believe he can't cover as much ground he wouldn't have had to.
  19. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 09:00 PM) I'm still kind of upset that Ozzie wouldn't do this last year for Floyd's could've-been no-hitter. There were people on here who claimed it is an unwritten rule in baseball that you do not make late inning defensive replacements with a no-hitter on the line, that it changes the karma. Didn't make much sense then (seeing as how all the best managers in the game do not follow this rule) and it makes even less sense now.
  20. QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 07:44 PM) Heyman says that Wallace is projected as a 1B and obviously, St. Louis doesn't have room there. Wallace is perfectly capable of playing third base, his ass on the other hand belongs on the right side of the infield. This has to be the longest standing rumor in baseball. There was speculation the day after the A's acquired Holliday that they'd end up moving him to St. Louis at the deadline.
  21. This is the kind of thing that sways writers into voting yes when you show up on their hall of fame ballot. 6th pitcher in big league history to throw both a no-hitter and a perfect game.
  22. What an incredible series thus far. It's not often that you see a playoff like atmosphere like this against a non-divisional opponent in July.
  23. Among AL rookies with 125+ PA this season Gordon Ranks: 1st in AVG at .304, (#2 Gardner: .277) 1st in OBP at .371, (#2 Garnder: .350) 1st in SLG at .452, (#2 Nix: .443) 1st in OPS at .823, (#2 Reimold: .779) 4th in HR w/ 3 (#1 Reimold: 9) 2nd in RBI w/ 23 (#1 Reimold: 26) 1st in RC/27 at 6.11 (#2 Gardner: 5.28) RC/27 = Runs created per 27 outs
  24. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 11:15 PM) I wouldn't have a concern in the world with Bobby if not for how his stuff tends to look, which is not very good. I agree tonight was especially bad though, and this is honestly the first time (outside of maybe overreacting after a game, which I'm sure i've done several times) that I am legitimately concerned about Bobby. That's just it, for the first 2 hitters yesterday his stuff was just incredible. That big bender was there and he was putting the ball where he wanted, it was maybe the best he's looked all year, he ended up striking out the side. His average fastball velocity this year is the highest it's been since '06 and he was showing off a wicked curve, slider and change just 26 hours ago so I'm finding it tough to be too worried about his stuff despite how flat he was today.
  25. In save situations: 25 G, 25 IP, 1.12 WHIP, 3.60 ERA, 8.28 K/9, 2.52 BB/9, 3 HR In non-save situations: 9 G, 9 IP, 1.78 WHIP, 6.00 ERA, 12.00 K/9, 3.00 BB/9, 2 HR In saves: 22 G, 22 IP, 0.86 WHIP, 1.64 ERA, 9.00 K/9, 2.04 BB/9, 1 HR in blown saves: 3 G, 3 IP, 2.33 WHIP, 18.00 ERA, 3.00 K/9, 6.00 BB/9, 2 HR So yeah, he's pretty atrocious in his blown saves and non-save situations.
