Well if it is a straight up salary dump and we're not kicking in any cash then the payroll is down to $93.05M. The dumping of Jenks and Linebrink the past 2 days basically paid for Adam Dunn's 2011 salary (assuming it's $14M).

Josh Fields is available, non-tendered by the Royals.

14.00 Buehrle 1.20 Castro 14.00 Dunn 5.00 Floyd 8.35 Jackson 5.50 Linebrink 16.00 Peavy 8.50 Pierre 4.00 Pierzynski 2.75 Ramirez 12.00 Rios 4.75 Teahen 3.00 Thornton 1.25 Viciedo 1.75 Vizquel 102.05 Subtotal to 15 players - 3.50 Dodgers (Pierre) + ???? Manny + ???? Danks, Quentin, Pena 98.55 Total

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 10:23 PM) Is that counting Viciedo's money too? Yes. His $1.25M is included.

QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 10:01 PM) Actually, if they add Putz at 5 mil and Konerko for about 9, they don't add a lot of money since AJ took less and Jenks is gone. -2.67 AJ -3 (est) Kong -7.5 Jenks -4 Manny -1.5 Kotsay -.5 Jones +2 Putz +14 Dunn + salary jumps for younger guys + cheap MR + $400K Castro + $3M+ Danks + $2.25M Floyd + $500K Linebrink + $1M Peavy + Tony Pena salary increase + $2M Pierre + ~$1.8M Quentin + $1.65 Ramirez + $2.3M Rios + $2.5M Teahen + $750K Thornton + $375K Vizquel Our payroll is at about $98.55M right now not counting Pena, Quentin or Danks and assuming Dunn will be paid $14M in 2011 and Pierz will get $4M in 2011.

And THAT is why you don't offer him arbitration, he would have gotten about $7M through arb and we just locked him up for a million more on a 2 year deal. This has been a very, very good day.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 05:01 PM) KW said he gave Jerry 2 future directions at season's end: Young and cheap/All-in and expensive. Think we know now what Jerry chose. - Brett Ballantini This is the way it feels which is why I'm really not worried about the payroll, aside from Jenks I don't think we're going to shed much of anything from the payroll. This definitely feels like an all-in especially with Kenny's Williams' comments that there is room in the payroll for Dunn and Konerko and that it would be optimal.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 04:48 PM) Am I really the only one who doesn't care for this move? Great, we're building the team to be station to station, hit home runs or get shut out. Haven't we gone through this all before? Pierre, Beckham, Rios, Ramirez, Morel and even Quentin Station to station? They'll be slow at 3 positions: catcher, DH and 1B. 1 of those is typically an old guy with bad knees and the other 2 are boppers, how many teams have these speedsters at C, 1B and DH? You just replaced the slow, s***ty Kotsay with the slow, awesome Dunn. Sounds like a win to me.

There's going to be a portion of the fan base that will absolutely HATE Adam Dunn. This is a terrific day.

Adam Dunn can run a little, he's a far better athlete than any of the slow moving players we've had in town over the years.

Dontrelle wasn't given that contract until he landed in Detroit, they were under no obligation to extend him, they CHOSE to give him that ridiculous contract, the Marlins are not the ones that shelled out the $29M. The Marlins insisted on Dontrelle being included in the trade to slightly increase the value they would receive in the deal, not to dump a contract: Dontrelle was arbitration eligible going into the 2008 season, if the Marlins didn't want to pay him the ~$7M he was due in arb they could have just non-tendered him but including him in the Cabrera trade and possibly receive an extra player or 2 in the deal was a much better option -- keep in mind there were 4 other players included in the trade aside from Miller and Maybin -- they had all the bargaining power in trade talks seeing as how they were dangling one of the most talented players in the game and they took advantage of it. Dontrelle Willis being included in the trade was a bad thing because of both monetary and personnel concerns: personnel because you're giving up a little extra to include him in the deal and monetary because you were going to have to pay him to keep him around rather than non-tendering him since you just gave up an extra player or two to acquire him since that was the only way to land Miggy.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 11, 2010 -> 02:45 AM) Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Best movie of the year. Sure it's highly stylized and possibly overly clever but it's just so much god damn fun. I love Edgar Wright.

So why haven't the Sox offered PK or AJ arbitration?
Kalapse replied to macsandz's topic in Pale Hose Talk
November 23rd is the last day to offer arbitration, so there's no hurry. If AJ, Konerko, Manny (Type A's) or Putz (Type B ) are signed before then the Sox will receive draft pick compensation without the risk of offering arbitration. -
QUOTE (balfanman @ Oct 31, 2010 -> 09:00 PM) I don't believe that your correct on this. If the Sox trade Buehrle the trade has to be approved by Buehrle as he has 10 and 5 rights. And the window for the option year to kick in if traded is gone. That 5th year was only if he was traded by July 15 of this year. It no longer applies. That is what I can remember about his contract. If someone knows how to check this for sure it would be appreciated. You're 100% correct; if he's traded this offseason the team that picks him up will only be on the hook for his $14M 2011 salary. The escalators and option year were just added in lieu of giving him a full no trade clause, now that his 10/5 rights have kicked in those are no longer in effect.

or HDMI. My PC is pretty low scale and even it has an HDMI output. Though I imagine playing a PC game from chair on a TV would be pretty uncomfortable.

QUOTE (Felix @ Oct 20, 2010 -> 05:50 PM) You misunderstand my point. Fallout is a great series and Fallout 3 was a very good game (the engine and visuals were great). The writing/dialogue/plot/etc. wasn't nearly as good as the original two Fallouts, but that's bound to happen. New Vegas will probably be more of the same, which is fine. But anyway, play it on the PC. Fallout is a PC game. Always has been. There's a special place in hell for people that play games like it (say, Halflife 1 or 2) on PS3/360, etc. Not all of us are f***ing losers with tricked out PCs capable of playing games on high settings. f***ing nerd.
-
You definitely have to install Fallout 3 to the HDD on the PS3 but many have complained that the game is still loading an awful lot off the disc which is crazy inefficient.
-
You guys are playing the 360 version, I guarantee the PS3 game is far, far worse. I know Gamespot docked the PS3 version of Fallout 3 half a point because of all the glitches and frequent freezing, Bethesda just does a s***ty job working with the PS3 format then when EVERYONE has problems with the game they blame the consumer claiming their game is fine but you just got the disc dirty or your PS3 is overheating which is bulls***. The Point Lookout expansion was almost unplayable due to freezing, if you store items in the motel; after a while it will just freeze up every time you approach the room.

QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 19, 2010 -> 11:44 AM) For Kalapse and anyone, like me, who loves Terriers or The Shield, Alan Sepinwall and Dan Feinberg from hitfix.com have a great podcast with producer Shawn Ryan about his shows. Good listen. That was pretty damn good, glad you mentioned it. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Oct 19, 2010 -> 11:59 AM) Just started getting into Terriers, and I really like it. I've been turning people on to that show since the first episode and everyone that's given it a shot has had nothing but good things to say about it, no doubt in my mind at this point that is a terrific show. I just hope more people give it a shot, they won't be disappointed.

Fallout 3 on the ps3 was a buggy mess, if it wasn't the most addictive game I had ever played I probably would have shelved it for good after the third time it froze up on me or slowed to a crawl during shootout with raiders. Each review I've read for New Vegas so far says it's more of the same in every way, it's basically a massive expansion of Fallout 3 (not necessarily a bad thing), the graphics are exactly the same and the same bugs, frame rate issues and freeze ups from the last game are there and then some. This is a tremendous disappointment, I'll probably pick it up in the future since I'm sure it's still a wholly enjoyable experience and a few updates and patches will eradicate some of the bugs but I don't have a whole lot of faith that they'll be able clean it up to the point where there will be no incredibly frustrating problems considering they never got around to fixing Fallout 3.

I finished 5 challenges, decided I'm probably not going finish them all and instead went to the code screen and entered "icanbe23" to unlock the "create a legend" mode and I am hooked. The "my player" mode is bulls***, dropping in a player rated around 40? yeah f*** that I'm far too impatient. This way you drop in a 21 year old Jordan rated at 79 and immediately take the league by storm, these modes where you control 1 player on the playing field are the absolute best. This is some of the most fun I've ever had playing a sports game.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Oct 13, 2010 -> 09:51 PM) Jackson = better now Kenny = wants to be better now Ozzie = wants to be better now Uncle Jerry = wants to be better now The majority of fans = also want to be better now 6 years = next year and then we'll think about that when the time comes $8M vs. $450K = the difference between a veteran with #1 stuff and a guy other GMs didn't have a world of confidence in longterm This is a confusing negative when you're comparing him to a pitcher who's on his 5th team in 8 years; 3 of which featured only 19 total outings.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 11, 2010 -> 11:43 AM) 27% would be about where they are if they wound up 8th out of 30 teams. It's also worth noting that if we're being rigorous about the fact that the Sox had money coming in from the Dodgers and Royals, the teams behind them didn't stay fixed during the season. Both teams behind the Sox subtracted from their early season payroll during the year, while the Sox added to it by trading for Jackson. The Angels shed some salary down the stretch (i.e. Fuentes), the Mariners shed a boatload of salary mid-season by dealing Lee. And it's also entirely possible that the teams behind the Sox had people chipping in for their players as well in ways that we don't know about. That Angels payroll is low, they're paying Matthews and Speier about $16M on top of that $104M, they dumped Fuentes' prorated $9M salary at the end of August but acquired Haren's $8.25M salary at the end of July, I'd say their payroll actually increased by the end of the season. The Mariners who don't really factor into the Sox's ranking did pay a portion of each player's salary that they dealt during the season including the $3.5M they paid of Silva's salary that wasn't included in the original total. Payroll obligations are public and not all that hard to find, I'd say it's pretty accurate that the Sox were about 10th or 11th in baseball even if you want to factor in the I think ~$2.5M or so they added through trades during the season. The teams right around them (Giants, Twins, Dodgers, even the Cardinals) all added to their team payroll during the season as well.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 10, 2010 -> 05:53 PM) Opening day payroll was #7 in baseball (with the note that the Dodgers were paying enough of Pierre's salary that in an honest sense we were #8). Only 2 of the top 8 teams in MLB payroll made the playoffs. We got $8.5M from the Royals and Dodgers dropping us to 10th or 11th about even with the Twins.

So do I buy NBA 2k11 based on the IGN review? They're the only one out there but "best of its generation" is pretty bold, hate to drop $60 then find out that IGN was being hyperbolic. Tough decision, leaning toward picking it up.
