  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 12:48 PM) Cautioning against people who are giving a lot of credit to Wilson's testimony, libertarian legal blogger Orin Kerr points out "[...]that Wilson’s testimony seems so well-tailored to self-defense law could be seen as highly suspicious[...]"
  2. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 11:38 AM) Many of these things are made worse by poverty and then quickly compound, as the article points out. Getting pulled over because you can't afford to fix a broken tail light or a cracked windshield but you still need the car to drive to work is a "poverty violation." There's also the documented statistical difference in how frequently black people are pulled over for minor infractions versus white people. This also applies to being too poor to be in an area regardless of color, as that happened to my wife and I once. I know this probably more than a lot of you. You know as a person who grew up poor I have a solution. If your car has a problem fix it. That doesn't always mean you run up to the CarX for every little thing. A broken tail light, burnt out light is simple to fix and usually will get thrown out in court if you show you remediated the issue. When I bought my first car I spent an extra 15 bucks and picked up the maintenance book for my car on repairs. I used to fix my car's issues by either going up to a local parts store and picking up the parts. Or for bigger parts going to the junk yard in Blue Island. So what happens when the poor persons car gets bad brakes. I mean thats a lot of cost and the guy still needs to get the work. Is it okay for him to race down the road without brakes.
  3. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 11:21 AM) From a policy standpoint, as a society, we are really dependent on cars to get around. I've lived in Chicago, and I have lived in some cities with terrible public transportation, and in those cities having a car is, literally, a necessity if you want to work. I represented a guy in a bankruptcy who worked at the McDonald's by his apartment. The apartment was one of the few he could afford. He didn't have a car. The apartment wasn't on, or near, a bus line. And McDonald's was the only business close enough for him to walk to. The point here is that minor traffic offenses, while inconvenient for everyone, have a much greater impact on the working poor - especially in cities where there aren't reasonable alternative transportation options... Its a real simple formula. If your car is that important to you then make sure your license is taken care of, that your permits and registrations are up to date, and that you have liability insurance. If you don't have any of that then don't drive. If your car is an important part of your life then take care of that privilege. Drive the speed limit or under. Obey all of the traffic laws. If you do that for the most part you wont run into many problems. People drive like its a video game at times. And I understand that more affluent people can absorb the fines and impact than the poor. But its not like the police are saying well I see that car going 1 under the speed limit, lets make up a speeding charge and pull him over.
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 26, 2014 -> 10:46 AM) Going to link this Radley Balko (libertarian, long-time scholar at Cato, has written about police militarization and abuse for years) article about how municipalities and police forces in St. Louis County profit from the poor and particularly black poor again, because it should really give everyone an understanding of where this distrust comes from. These people are living in a Kafka novel. http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-wat...s-from-poverty/ If you get pulled over and your credentials get run and they come up suspended, a warrant, or not valid for any reason it gets dealt with the same way no matter what color you are. Its not like they said, well Jimmy we see a warrant for your arrest and you have a suspended license but I see you went to Sandburg, live in Orland, and are white so have a nice day and don't do it again. The same with insurance. You need valid insurance to drive a car. If you don't have a valid license, have a warrant or no insurance then don't drive a car. That's not a poverty violation. Driving is a privilege not a right. The same with expired plates and registration.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 10:24 AM) Yes. The bottom line for me, and no amount of "some people just be itchin to violencts" will really change my mind, is that a cop tried to stop an unarmed teenager from jaywalking and the unarmed teen ended up dead. Doesn't mean Brown acted polite and did not deserve to be arrested, but he ended up dead. That doesn't scream "I'm really good at my job". A 6'4 300 pound man that you stop starts a physical altercation with you and then tries to take your service weapon. Tell me exactly how you disarm that situation with your training and tactics. There is a difference in acting impolite and a violent altercation.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 25, 2014 -> 08:51 AM) Wilson also described Brown as looking like a Demon: Wild animal who only gets more enraged as you shoot him; a demon. This sounds like reasonable testimony sufficient enough to rule out even probable cause for an indictment. So if you get stopped by a police officer is it your normal action to start a confrontation with him. Because thats what happened with Mike. Now I was taught to be polite, to use yes sir and no sir with authorities in all avenues. The 6'4 300 pound man who decided to start a struggle with a man with a firearm. If a 6'4 300 pound man decides to fight me, he is going to win. No matter the training I have had, no matter what I am doing in the battle. I can tell you he is going to win. Anyone that disputes that is either 300 pounds and that size themselves or delusional. People have a misguided view on physical altercations. Mostly because they haven't been in anything but a simple schoolyard fight. Two men will fight using only their fists and the victor will immediately stop the minute the threat is over. That doesn't happen. They believe that just like the movies or the video games. Once you shoot someone, they immediately stop aggressive behavior. They immediately say, well wait a second I have been shot I should stop this foolishness. Its not like fight or flight kicks in or that they could be on some sort of narcotic that can alter or change their reality. People also believe that every cop is a sharp shooter. During a fight in a cramped space or moving or fighting with someone who is stronger than you trying to get your gun. Its not a silhouette at 40 yards in a controlled situation. Not every shot hits a vital organ, slows or stops the person or is a kill shot.
  7. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 23, 2014 -> 10:46 PM) I'm assuming some things here, but let me quickly give you this scenario. I imagine I'm at the park in the afternoon and kids are playing. There's a 12 year old kid with a gun and he's scaring people. He hasn't shot the gun. He's just being a bully or whatever. A pest. Obviously nobody thinks it's a real gun or people would flee the park which apparently wasn't happening. Instead of calling the fricking cops, I walk over and pick up the gun off the table when the 12 year old puts it on the table. Yes I actually get involved. Yes I am risking getting beat up by the parents of the 12 year old or shot by the 12 year old, but I'm pretty sure it's not a real gun. When I grab the gun I see if it's real or not. If it's not real I put it down and say something to the kid that's not real mean, just maybe you shouldn't scare the other kids. If it's real, well I keep it and call the cops and quickly tell them to NOT SHOOT ME when they arrive to pick up the gun. I really truly don't think you need to end the 12-year-old's life over this. If my assumptions in this case prove false, then I'll change my position. But I don't think the cops need to show up and kill a kid over this transgression. Yes ... if I'm brother of the cop I don't want some 12 year old ending my brother's life. I just happen to believe this situation did not need to end with a cop killing the 12 year old. I think this situation also dictated some onlookers perhaps getting involved. If it's police protocol to kill in this situation ... fine. If you see someone with a gun and you don't call the cops. You are being a moron. I know you are very naive and live in some sort of Mayberry bubble in Kansas but come on now. I was stabbed in my leg in lovely Mount Greenwood when I was in the 5th grade by another 11 year old during a fight. I am sure he was a wonderful boy and just got mixed up. Maybe he thought he was reaching for his legos. Maybe he thought it was a fake weapon. I don't know. That wonderful child wound up in prison later in life. Some children are not the lego playing rapscallions messing around and goofing with the local kids. Some of them are warming up for a bad decision that can affect someones life. Or the other possibility. We see plenty of examples where they get a real weapon that their wonderful parents left out. They decide to show off, play around with it. It could be that he doesn't understand that a real weapon is loaded or not. And sometimes accidents happen. Enough examples of kids accidentally shooting a family member or a friend with a real gun they thought was not loaded. So if I see something that looks like a weapon I am not going to confront the kid. I don't know if its real or not. And to be honest I don't trust the judgement of a child when it comes to things like that. I will call the police. Now I don't know if the police officer acted correctly, but the idea that you see a person with a gun and can determine if its real or not its amazing. Greg they don't have the big orange ends on them and shoot sparks like the ones you played with as a kid. This is a tragedy. A young life is gone and will never come back. http://www.news4jax.com/news/police-12year...ss-man/27243908 http://wnep.com/2014/10/13/10-year-old-boy...year-old-woman/ http://www.cnn.com/2014/06/03/justice/wisc...n-girl-stabbed/ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-22...r-sentence.html
  8. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 9, 2014 -> 09:48 PM) One of the Trestman daughters getting a little chippy on Twitter. And the mensa members of twitter are doing their usual thing as well going after her. 140 characters to prove your a mouth breather. Social media just keeps the world connected that we are barely evolved.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 6, 2014 -> 03:02 PM) Bruce Levine ‏@MLBBruceLevine 15m15 minutes ago Mets one of the teams interested in White Sox shortstop Ramirez ! @670TheScore find my story and http://CBSchicago.com
  10. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 10:03 PM) If so, then this Ebola may be morphing into a condition that can be spread in more ways than trading of bodily fluids. Hmmm.... Greg Science at work.
  11. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 4, 2014 -> 08:01 PM) Asdrubal Cabrera and Matt Williams tossed. This ump is really pissing the Nats off That 3-1 call was bullcrap. Up and away and a strike. This guys zone is weird.
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 1, 2014 -> 02:22 PM) I ask the question again ... in response to Dick Allen's great post, tell me why we love Steverson so much and hate Walker? You + this thread =
  13. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 09:58 PM) Uh, now it's coming out he had no broken eye socket ... did you watch the cellphone video of the shooting of the guy with the knife in St. Louis? I can't believe the people aren't rioting over that death. If you watch the video, you tell me they couldn't have tazed the guy or shot him in the leg at the point he's wandering around in the parking lot. Was he going to fire the knife like a martial arts guy? What kind of knife was it? Please comment on the video to me and tell me that life couldn't have been spared. I'm still sticking by my opinion they didn't need to kill the unarmed Mike Brown, as well. No broken eye socket after all??? I'm so sick of bad reporting. You can't believe anything anymore because of twitter. Ridiculous. How bout some media members get fired over this crap reporting. It was a sharp knife greg. The kind that penetrates vital organs and flesh. It creates a big ouchy, the kind that a couple of band aids can't fix. I think Greg you watch one too many movies and have a very delusional view of how this all works. I know that in the movies the guy disarms the guy with a fancy set of ninja moves he learned after working out for 3 weeks to mid-80s inspirational soft rock. Or he does a fancy hip shot and shoots the bad guy in the hand, and catches the knife in midair. But its a bit harder than that in the real world.
  14. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 09:06 PM) A black eye isn't quite a broken eye socket. A black eye is not exactly running away with your hands up either.
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 06:39 PM) There were at least three if not four witnesses who back up the "hands up" version. Are these the same witnesses that had Mike getting shot in the back as well.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 02:16 PM) And yet an unarmed NFL football player has never been shot down in the street by a police officer, have they? There have certainly been enough police/athlete confrontations over the years at traffic stops. How many of them were robbing a convenience store right before their confrontation. How many of them got physical with a cop on his own.
  17. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 01:52 PM) well in that hypothetical, that's exactly what's at question. Police can't immediately go to deadly force if they're assaulted. If the guy is resisting arrest and hits you a couple of times, that doesn't (necessarily, usually) justify deadly force. At what point does it. When you are about to lose consciousness. A 6'3 300 pound man punches you in the face is not the same as a 5'8 175 pound guy doing the same thing. This isn't Mike Tyson's punch out.
  18. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 01:26 PM) I'm not sure. I wonder if the Ferguson PD has any training and certification requirements on hand-to-hand unarmed combat. He is 6'3 300 pounds. What kind of ninja skills do you think they teach at the academy to combat sheer size and strength.
  19. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 01:16 PM) Force, sure, but there's a force continuum. Punching a cop in the face doesn't entitle them to shoot you. A lineman on the bears decides to beat you down. Is that a bit different than a guy 5'8 175 pounds duking it out with you at the bar. The size does matter.
  20. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 01:13 PM) Would help if we knew more about the nature of the scuffle in/at the vehicle. If Brown was physically violent at that point, and then started coming at the cop again after the short chase, I think he has a reasonable need to use force. He was what 6'3 300 pounds. So basically a lineman on the bears is getting violent with you. Unless you are another large individual a physical altercation is going to not end well for the recipient of that encounter.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 02:16 PM) The game isn't set up for the best. It is set up for the 99.9% of the rest. Exactly. My 10 year old played 9u travel last year pitching from 46 feet. This year they will pitch from that distance and have lead offs, balks, and drop 3rd strikes. In in-house Pony rules even they move to lead offs and 48 feet for the pitching at 11/12.
  22. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 11:22 AM) Over the years I have had to remind young pups like yourself that "IT AIN'T OVER TILL IT'S OVER". Never give up! Over the years, you have been wrong.
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 20, 2014 -> 02:35 PM) I'm glad to see the draft lovers on this board have not wanted the Sox to tank this season to get a high draft pick. This case again shows the uncertainty of the draft. What if the Sox would have drafted this guy and they not signed him or his arm woulda fallen off so to speak in the minors? I haven't read the threads, but certainly some Sox fans would have loved to draft this guy. What did Houston get out of having the worst record last year? Nothing. It's all a crapshoot, baby. What if Abreu gets hit in the head by an acorn while walking through the park by a wayward squirrel and forgets who he is. What if Sale slips on a banana and hurts his right asscheek. Aiken has a smaller UCL and is still throwing 97 mph and is not injured. The common sense people wanted to take a bad season and turn it into something that will help the team for years. There were 3 pitchers that everyone had spun up as 1a, 1b, and 1c. There is risk in everything. Keep sticking your head in the sand with the "draft lovers" statements. Its these cartoon-like statements that have people dismissing just about everything you type.
