  1. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 30, 2013 -> 09:02 PM) Which will suck, because it means that Mitchell, Thompson and Walker all stalled in their development to the point where, ONCE AGAIN, we had to go outside of the organization for talent, either overpaying for a FA or giving up pitching depth from the minors. Otherwise, it's a mini-"fire sale." Tigers beating up the Twins 6-1 behind Verlander...Tigers starting to play much better baseball. The might not be waiting until August to wake up from their stupor this season. The Tigers also did well against Cy Worley.
  2. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 26, 2013 -> 11:00 PM) The Will to Win must mean Hawk loves grinders. I wonder who in the Sox everyday lineup the past few years has really exuded the will to win? The guys that can't bunt would be eliminated. If you have a will to win you must learn how to do the little things. I'd say Paulie has the will to win; AJ has the will to win; Peavy has it; Carlton Fisk had it; Baines and Thomas; hopefully Addy Reed. Did Hawk explain who has the will to win?? In his mind, does he go as far back as Pete Rose? There probably aren't many players that truly have the will to win by Hawk's standards. I would say that anyone that fires Tony Larussa in his first year as GM doesn't have TWTW.
  3. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 26, 2013 -> 01:50 AM) Who started TWTW? I certainly haven't seen that in this team? So why now? What's going on with this saying? I missed it. The guy who fired Tony Larussa. He wrote it on his 1975 typewriter and used whiteout for his mistakes.
  4. QUOTE (Jake @ Apr 26, 2013 -> 01:07 AM) Hawk has a player/coach mindset. Advanced stats don't always make it easier to coach a player, you can get important marginal gains with BS like increasing TWTW (btw, if you don't think an increase in TWTW doesn't have something to do with Rios's improvement, you're wrong). There are also mechanical/technical adjustments, improved training, etc. that won't be quantifiable or especially predictable. Sabermetrics are really good at explaining what has already happened. Sabermetrics can tell us that Adam Dunn was really valuable even though he struck out a lot and hit a lot of home runs. They may have told us he was trending towards more strikeouts. Unfortunately, Dunn's TWTW or something like that caused an amazingly precipitous downfall. Sabermetrics tell us that Gordon was probably unlucky last year and with neutral luck we should expect a somewhat better year this year. We'll see how accurate that is. There is absolutely a tremendous balance to be achieved between quantitative considerations and qualitative. We are certainly getting better at quantifying things, though. If I know that a guy hits .375 with runners in scoring position in late in close games and puts the ball in play in the air with a man on 3rd and less than two outs. I might walk him to face the guy who puts the ball on the ground most of the time instead of relying on my gut. I might bring in a lefty to move a switch hitter over to the right side because he has a .200 point discrepancy in his OPS late in a game when a home run ties it. Maybe we should just have the players wear mood rings so we can see their will to win is that day. Dunn is not having problems because his grinder rule 2.0 ( TWTW ) is low. Maybe its because his bat is slower due to age, or he has a mechanical flaw or due to advanced scouting they are exploiting a flaw in his approach. Rios was a change in his stance. Great another year of made up crap because Hawk and the marketing department Jedi mind tricks the masses.
  5. This is what goes through Hawks mind when he passes a computer.
  6. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 25, 2013 -> 11:48 PM) Anyone who thinks Ron Santo was bad at his job has to realize Hawk is just as bad, right? You would figure that the same people making fun of Santo screaming YES YES YES on fly balls only to hear him grumble when it gets caught near the track think the same when they hear stretch, get on back there, then silence as its an easy fly ball out. I have not been a big fan of Hawk but in the last few years he has been intolerable. We could put a cardboard cutout with a sound board and I don't think most people would know that he wasn't there. I am sure that things that scare Hawk besides Sabr is teenagers, computers, and loud noises.
  7. QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 25, 2013 -> 09:46 PM) Video if you missed it and want to endure it. That was painful. His new stat, TWTW, LOL. He is channeling his inner Ron Santo these days. Facts, stats f*** that. Its some will of the force causing wins. The numbers on the back of the baseball card are only appreciated if they were on the card back in 1967.
  8. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 10:55 PM) And yet our rotation in 2015 may very well be the same as it is now, and that's a good thing. We just need someone, anyone, who can hit. Luckily that should be easier to find. Well its easy to find if we actually evaluate talent. We seem to get caught in a type of player we want and then we replicate the pick up of said player. How many Broadway type clones did we pick up. Now its the Mitchell clones.
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 10:50 PM) IMO, it has a lot less to do with drafting safe talent. Instead, far too many trades have resulted recently in the Sox giving up talented players only to get absolutely nothing in terms of impact players in return. Hahn definitely has a tough job right now and can't afford to continue with Kenny's streak of striking out on trades. Gillaspie was a good start for Hahn, but bigger trades are sure to come. There's not a single position player that you can place in the mock 2015 Sox lineup and be confident they will be an everyday starter. I'm not sure there's another team in baseball you could say that about. Well we have had moments of clarity where they were afraid to move names due to concerns over attendance. In 2007 we did not unload. We held on to certain players a year too long and when we did move someone we boat anchored them with a contract we wanted to move off the books. What kind of return are you getting when you boat anchor Teahen to the trade. Hahn will need 2 things. One is time to revert the mess he is in. The other is Reinsdorf/Kenny from making baseball decisions. I think we need to do a better job of scouting ourselves and what is something we should keep and build on versus dump and chase elsewhere.
  10. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 10:05 PM) Justin Masterson is the team's ace. They got 2 runs off of him. I know that's not a lot considering the guy's ERA was 1.67. Axe gave a solid outing. The bullpen has to lock that s*** down and they didn't. Tekotte is a f***ing idiot and single handlely killed a rally. Outside the bad defense. The sox did OK tonight. The lineup has to be shaken up. I rather have the auto outs down in the 9 spot. Bat Dunn 9th for the love of god. They got 2 runs off of him? So that should be good enough. LMAO.
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 10:00 PM) If we can't beat the Twins and Indians at home, who are we going to beat? We've already played the Mariners. Houston?
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 09:56 PM) I agree. He overreacted big time there.
  13. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 09:51 PM) Rongey will smooth it over. Rongey "I don't believe the offense is this bad. Maybe in late June if they are still hitting like this." And in late June he will be talking up that anything can happen in a bad division.
  14. You know stone poney I don't like this losing one bit. Now that we are losing I am going to keep quiet and when I talk I will sound grumpy. Hawk
  15. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 06:42 AM) You still haven't told us what an acceptable punishment would be. A timeout and no video games for 4 weeks.
  16. QUOTE (Jake @ Apr 21, 2013 -> 11:21 PM) I don't see why military personnel being present is proof of guilt. I also don't see the part where those two are without backpacks because they blew them up. Or why all the lines from the two pictures of them mean anything other than that those are both pictures of them. I have a military style backpack 5.11 rush 24 with honor patches one being the punisher because I happen to like the punisher. The other patch is an american flag. The backpacks prove nothing except they like well made backpacks. Hence the reason I bought mine. My 9 year old is rocking a camo rush 12 with a spiderman honor patch and a zombie patch. I will have to alert the tinfoil society.
  17. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 20, 2013 -> 05:44 PM) What? Are you kidding me. How many short hops and long hops and other Alexei side armed, held too long, lazy throws has Konerko scooped out of the dirt in the last couple of years. And you don't think that the regular 1st baseman who has a history of scooping these might of had more success than the utility guy we swung over there.
  18. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 20, 2013 -> 05:40 PM) Please. Ball bounced too far in front for it to be scooped "easily". Yes because this is the first time Konerko has handled an Alexei short hop.
  19. QUOTE (Jake @ Apr 20, 2013 -> 05:34 PM) Looks like our new GM is not looking great so far. His biggest signing is playing pretty damn poorly and his construction of the bench with these injuries is fairly puzzling. And some people thought there may have been some way to dump Dunn in the offseason... But, we've played what, 15 games? Lots of time left to forget all of this. The strategy is to rebuild on the fly. This strategy only works if you either tradeable assets and/or a decent minor league.
  20. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 20, 2013 -> 05:31 PM) I don't think so. It was a bad throw, looked like he was unsure of whether to go to third or first. Konerko scoops that easily. He makes that play quite a bit.
  21. So the only left out of the 07 formula is the pitching. If the pitching just slides a bit, then large amounts of comedic value losses are upon us. Bad defense, check Bad hitting, check Injuries, check Bad bench, check
