3/19/07 - Kansas City vs. Chicago

QUOTE(TheOcho @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 05:37 PM) Ouch. And he's batting second against righties ... agh. Thome better hit a s***load of homers if he wants 100rbis this year. Between him and captain OBP Pods the solo dong is back in style again. -

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 05:23 PM) They don't have anything to do with how our team will perform once the season starts, as I've stated before both with pitchers and hitters. Just like Iguchi won't hit under .200 and Crede won't hit over .400. But you were trying to make it sound like we were sucking on offense, when that obviously isn't the case. I want to see a better approach to beating tough pitchers, to getting onbase and to scoring runs. I am a bit concerned about our offense. I see Erstad and Pods at the top and shutter to think of how bad our OBP will be and how many solo dongs we will have. For the last 2 years our O has litteraly died in the 2nd half. Our overall numbers for the year look good because of a strong start. In 2006 we were 9th out of 14 teams in the AL in runs scored in the 2nd half. Crunch time. We were 13th out of 14 teams in OBP. In 05 we were 10th out of 14 teams in runs scored in the 2nd half and 9th out of 14 teams for OBP. Thank god our pitching was so good that year. -

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 05:10 PM) And 4th in OBP and 4th in AVG and 3rd in SLG Its funny you were posting before when someone was ripping into our pitchers ERAs that you cant judge anything based on stats for a pitcher because its Arizona, yet you are here using stats on how great our O is. If Arizona and its dry air and elevation affect our pitchers wouldnt it affect theirs as well. -

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 05:06 PM) Yeah, it's not very pretty. We don't have the excuse of having a B lineup, either. Only Thome is missing. Carasco shut down most of our starters on Saturday for like 1 hit over 5, and now this. Hopefully this isnt that crap in 05 when no one could hit for the first 2 months of the season. QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 05:08 PM) You do realize that we are second in the majors is runs scored during the spring correct? WooHoo check the last 5 years at where we are as a team with scoring runs over a season. Even in 04 when we pounded a pitcher for 10 runs and then got 3 hit for the next week. It all looks good at the end. -

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 04:31 PM) isn't that true with most good pitchers? Yeah because with our lineup we should be staring at 2 hits through 5. That makes sense. good no great. If this was Santana sure. Lets see what happens when its August and we see some bum with a 7 ERA doing the same thing. -

So far this spring any pitcher that challenges us over the plate gets decked. Anyone that pitches and hits the outside corner shuts us down. Good to see that we havent changed too much. -

The only thing that saddens me about losing Gload is that his bat and the way he swings it is the exact way some of our non-boppers should be swinging the stick. Thinking of gap to gap hitting instead of pull and lift. thinking of making contact being a tough out. This as we struggle with 2 hits over 4. Hopefully our O doesnt go into early slumber this year. -

Russell so far has a good arm with movement. This is the type of prospect that we should keep a hold of. You can draft a million safe pitchers, but something that has a live arm and can miss bats is a good thing. he needs seasoning but lets keep up with it. -

Our team needs to pound the strikezone inside this year. We pitched to opponents like we were scouting ourselves. We just went away away away and then got rocked. If our pitchers used that approach on us, they would be Cy Young, however most other teams adjust and start to rip doubles into the right center gap. -
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 02:52 PM) I belive the answer is rather simple -- Guillen is hell bent on featuring a lefthanded 1-2 combination of (supposed) speed. Considering how every viable statistic within the last several seasons has favored Iguchi as an ideal 2-hole hitter against righthanders, what other explanation is plausible? It's not as if we're hurting for power and need Iguchi to drive in more runs lower in the lineup. Now shockingly the Marlins had a lefty tandem up top also. Ozzie pretty much hasnt let go of the Marlins offense and is trying to elmulate it.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 02:03 PM) Perry's has the best corned beef sand in the city. Hands down. That sandwich is big enough to feed a family of 4.
-
QUOTE(Y2HH @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 01:36 PM) I do believe if you told Walk he wanted people to "pull" he'd say no, he wants them to "drive". Thats semantics in this case. I would rather see a line drive swing and better situational hitting than watching our guys trying to hit cars on the Dan Ryan. You have 3 guys that are our bonified power thumpers. If its 3-1 sure try to drive it to mars, if its late in the game and we need a single to tie it with a man on 2nd I dont see the reasoning in watching a hitter fall over trying to hit the ball onto the concourse instead of putting a good swing on it and putting it into the gap. The grinder team that this team was patterened after was the Twins. If you get to 2 strikes on a twink and the game is late, the kid may go down, but he will battle your brains out shortening his swing up and trying to put the ball in play. I then see our hitters in the same game with large cuts trying to just murder the baseball. There are times in a game where you should cut down on your swing and put the ball in play and I dont think we preach that at all here. And I think this is why we see year after year some no name nothing 1 hitting our club after 5 innings by pitching us low and away. QUOTE(Craig Grebeck @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 01:55 PM) Why don't they leave Gooch in the two hole and just let him play his game. Enough with the smallball. Its the opposite of smallball. Smallball would be leaving Gooch in the 2 hole because he can hit to the right side well and handles his bat well. They want Gooch to mash the ball and hit cars on the Dan Ryan. I remember they messed around with Aaron Rowands swing in 2005, that didnt turn out too good for him.
-
QUOTE(Y2HH @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 01:34 PM) I'd prefer to have Iguchi #2. That said, I'm supporting Erstad, even if I'm once again in the minority around here. All of you Erstad bashers can piss up a flag pole. If it was Erstad in left field sure. But Prancer and Erstad is just f***ed up. Two guys who dont get onbase. The formula you need for a lot of solo dongs.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 01:10 PM) im in the opinion that Iguchi is one of the bet #2 hitters in the game. Apparently nobody on the White Sox share that opinion. Well Walk and Ozzie want Gooch to lift and pull more, and you cant do that from the #2 hitting role.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 18, 2007 -> 06:30 PM) He had groin issues last year. He won 17 I think in 2005. He's only signed for 1 season, and for a 5th guy, a veteran who doesn't walk a lot of people, I think he would have to be considered. I doubt they do. If he was free, sure. But if you have to trade anything, especially anything of value for a 37 year old pitcher with some groin issues who's era has been rising over the last 3 seasons, then its time to take a flier on something else. Wait for the eventual ST releases before you do that. -

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 18, 2007 -> 06:21 PM) If they traded him and got a guy like Lieber, I'd be fine with it. There is no doubt in my mind though that Charlie would outperform Danks and Floyd in the 5th spot in 2007. Considering all of the White Sox overhyped prospects from the late 90's on, you know the prospects as a whole that were ranked #1 and ultimately got KW the farm director, the GM job, the one who wasn't as hyped as all the others, who had the biggest success, was Buerhle, hardly a flamethrower. Haeger has a reasonable chance to have a Wakefield-type career. Lieber is a 37 year old pitcher who got rocked in a horrible NL. I think I will pass on that. -

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Mar 18, 2007 -> 04:27 PM) I'm not saying, I'm just saying.....that sounds a lot like another lefty we recently traded to the Cubs. Cotts only had one and a half pitches with horrible control and relied on a deceptive delivery. Not the same thing at all with Danks. Danks has the tools but needs a bit of refinement. -

QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Mar 18, 2007 -> 04:24 PM) 1-2 pitch that caught too much of the plate for a guy like Branyan. Truth be told, Danks needs just a litttttle bit of fine tuning, and I'd like to see that in AAA. Lets look at Danks's MO. He is the youngest at each of the levels he has gone to, he gets touched up a bit at first, then makes an adjustment and then does very well at that level. It kind of makes his overall numbers look not that impressive, but if you do splits he does pretty damn good. I figure the same thing will happen when he comes up. He just needs to hold his own a bit, until he does unlock it and then he should be real good. The talent and the stones are there. -

At what point does the anti-prospect poster come in here to tell us all of our prospects suck and we should employ over priced vets he forgets suck and are paid a lot of money. -

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Mar 18, 2007 -> 04:05 PM) Their lineup is going to be ridiculous. What I've read is that they are going to go Blake/Garko at 1B along Nixon/Blake in RF and Dellucci/Michaels in LF. I figure they can probably get Garko about 350-400 ABs, so that should be more than enough. I am still not sold on Borowski as a closer, or Carmona..etc. Borowski did in last year in mammoth park, he failed a physical at the Phillies. So something is not good there. -

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Mar 18, 2007 -> 03:51 PM) Yeah, he kept it to nearly the minimum. 4 K's through 2 innings is not bad at all. Uribe nearly made the play to keep it to 1 run but it was tough in the hole in short left. Couple lucky infield hits is nothing to worry about. We also have to remember, Danks is a 5th starter, not a number one yet. So he will give up runs, he will make rookie mistakes but remember when El Duque was our starter and was absolutely miserable at the end of the year getting decked. If Danks can do a good job, keep us in games great thats all I want from my number 5 starter. I just dont want people thinking that he is going to throw shutouts just yet. -
Well it was a grand St. Patrick's day, and probably a bit boring for the most of you. I watched my son today as my wife was working, and then we went to mass and then to dinner at my in-laws for some corned beef, cabbage and champ. Later on I promised my brother-in-law that I would go with him to the Kerry Piper to see some band play, and make fun of him attempting to pick up drunken girls. Just got back from Kerry Piper in Willowbrook. The outside tent, was overcrowded and too smoky. People were having a good time, and there was a few people drunk, but nothing out of control. I went there to see the Larkin and Moran Brothers play, who put on a good show. I didn't touch a drop of alcohol as I was the designated driver and I figure that I was a sitting duck for a pull over. Watching my brother-in-law shoot, and miss a few times was enough entertainment for me for the night. His selection was a bit missing this time as it seemed that either the girls were engaged or married, the other ones either had their own gravitational pull like most small planets do, or they were on the scary side. Now that I am home, I will break open a Guinness and pour me a pint. Hope everyone is safe.

QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Mar 17, 2007 -> 03:55 PM) This is one boring-ass game! Hawk can paint any pitcher as the resurrection of Catfish Hunter or Cy Freakin Young we humble our bats into sleep. The minute you get Hawk talking up a pitcher on the other side, you can count the number of hits on your one hand. -

Walk states only in the last month did our guys have a problem with their offense. He must of been drunk as a skunk during August then.
