  1. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Feb 8, 2007 -> 04:22 PM) The casual fans who only root because it's their country. I dont know. Here is another thought. What is worse. The casual fan that roots for their country for a show of nationalistic pride. Or someone that was born here, and roots for someone else which is obviously what I see when we watch a US game in America. I never see the red white and blue outnumbering the opponent. So did an army of people here on Visa's or were born in other countries just happen to show up. Maybe. Or is it children of immigrants who seem to love it here, except for when the teams play. I was born in Ireland. However if the US were to play the Irish I would wear my red white and blue and root for the Americans to beat Ireland. This is the only country I have known. I am an American citizen. Its somewhere that I have been since I was one years old. Dont get me wrong if Ireland is playing anyonje else, I root for the Irish. I own a Duff and Keane jersey. But there are plenty of people in this country that seem to identify with another country, even thought they have never been there for most accounts and forget why we all came here in the first place. My father used to get mad at me when people would ask what I was and would say Irish. He told me, you are an American.
  2. God what a messed up life for her daughter to inherit. Hopefully they will wisk her away and let her grow up as normal as you could under the situation. RIP
  3. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 8, 2007 -> 02:03 PM) I have no words that can possibly express how unbelievably stupid I feel this article is and how angry I am at having spent a minute reading it. I am sure that the drunken fools who rush to watch a rotten team play in an antiquated dump of a stadium will be lining up to bring goats and their buddies named Murphy to every single ballpark that team hits this year. I remember in 03 when these fools were bringing stupid farm animals to the games and reciting some made up curse backwards. These are the same fans who ate a f***ing blown up baseball in their pasta. The only curse are the people who have to watch these drunken fools urinating in their yards after another fine game at the dump. Wait till Mike Murphy gets a hold of this one. He will be playing goofy soundbites and giggling like a school girl that he can personally lift them from their crappy status.
  4. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Feb 8, 2007 -> 01:01 PM) Shame on the American team for giving their country false hope. Who is getting false hope.
  5. I would take the heat over the cold anyday. At least when its super hot out, when the sun goes down you can still go out and enjoy the evening outside. When its -10 below and you go outside at night you need therapy.
  6. Here is the sportscenter highlights, including the assclown trying to take out EJ as he runs by.
  7. QUOTE(knightni @ Feb 8, 2007 -> 12:13 AM) Ahh dammit!!! I better be getting some best threadadder votes out of this! Vote whore
  8. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Feb 7, 2007 -> 11:47 PM) My game notes: - Mexico's new adidas jerseys were terrible...I hate how adidas is taking the nike college cookie-cutter approach of giving all their teams the same design... - bruce arena hurts my ears... - Both teams played pretty bad most of the game. Same recent formula and result in the end, though. - Stupid, ugly move at the end...wynalda made a nice comment about the goalie losing his dad before the World Cup and him coming out and playing well, and then he goes and does something stupid like that... - Boring game overall. Bruce Arena hurts everyones eyes. The only good thing is that he cant load the pitch up with ex DC United players and play a 4-5-1 anymore. The game was sloppy, and the pitch was small. They did an interview with Sunil who runs the US soccer federation. He provided nothing but nonsense. The fact that this man is heading up US Soccer means that nothing good is going to happen for a while. Albright can go away forever. He basically was a turnstyle. Mexico kept attacking him over and over and getting past him. Deak to the left, he over commits and cant stop. Deak to the right and he over commits and cant stop. 2 moves and you are past him running unabaited on goal. Only Howard and some team traps kept the clean sheet. Rolfe was worthless also. If Landon can play like this against non Concacaff teams we would be fine. He played well.
  9. Right after Donovan seals the game with a stoppage time deathblow to make it 2-0 The goalie gets up, and then goes spikes up into Eddie Johnson. Check the image in the back. Hopefully Fifa supsends their goalie. Its one thing when the fans throw urine bombs, but when you have players showing frustration and then going spikes up into a players ankle when they are running away from you. Its classless at the highest levels. Typical though, we have seen them punch players, spike them when they are on the ground. Dirty dirty play. The dirty play is on sportscenter. Maybe they should work on beating us on US soil and stop with the childish crap. USA USA USA
  10. QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Feb 7, 2007 -> 04:01 PM) nice.. i also love the cubs being 8-1. LOL. they must be banking a lot on Ted Lily winning 20 games. Actually its called baiting dumb cub fans to put a lot of money on the cubs to win it all.
  11. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 08:21 PM) Not sure if this needed it's own thread or not, but I figured 'why the hell not?'. I have recently been considering buying a new laptop since mine is about 4-5 years old and really not so hot. I am in love with the MacBook, but what I am wondering is this...I know I am going to want a laptop going into college (I am only a junior in HS), would it be worth waiting for the advances in laptops over the next year and a half? It is more of a general question than anything, but I guess what I am asking is will the advances with regards to laptops and specifically Apple be worth waiting a year and a half for? I don't necessarily need one right now, but if they aren't going to be remarkably better I figured I might as well. If you get the macbook, spend the 200 bucks more and get the black one. The case will hold up better. The longer you wait on technology, the better the equipment will be that is always the thing. From a technology standpoint, these would be my best guesses. Currently the procs are dual core 64bit. I could see the possibility of quad core systems by next year in the laptop. 802.11n wireless standard built in. If you have a newer Macbook you can upgrade your wireless to support pre-n and N by a firmware upgrade that costs $1.99. Larger Sata hard drives, The only thing that would keep me waiting is to see if Apple would put a Blueray or HD-DVD drive in their systems. But nothing has been leaked about that. Basically you have to draw a line in the sand and say I need it at this point and then purchase it. When you buy it, pretty much you will see within 6 months a newer and better laptop out with new gizmos. Pretty much unless you are doing some state of the art math processing, or heavy duty graphics these systems will be powerful enough. I run password cracking programs on my system that run heavy math and my core duo macbook runs great.
  12. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 01:19 PM) 1. Note that in the chart, "present" is 1950. Nice. Its the spikes since then that are really way beyond historical averages. Your chart is not accurate. 2. There were no dinosaurs around 400k years ago, or even close to that. The chart is still accurate. The difference between the 1950's reading and the top of those spikes is about 2 degree's centigrade. How much do you think we have gone up from the 1950's as a planet. The dino comment was sarcasm. However the Triassic period was about 245 million years ago which would put it right in the middle of one of those spikes.
  13. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Feb 6, 2007 -> 11:45 AM) There's no doubt that pollution has far reaching effects... one of which may be global climate change. By reducing CO2 emissions, we can help reclaim the negative effects that it has had on our environment. It's a good thing to do regardless of global warming. But if you want good anecdotal evidence - look at Mount Kilimanjaro. Look at the mountains in Montana that had snow caps year round 50 years ago. The average temperature on earth today is a full degree higher than it was 120 years ago, and a full degree higher than it was at the end of the last warming "cycle." Everytime I see a graph on global warming, its a 100-200 year snapshot of average temps. This is a bit small of a snapshot when you are talking about global climate changes. Sure we have seen an increase in temps over the last 100 years, and sure it has an affect on our climate at this point in history. But if you take a look through time, the temperature of the world has fluctuated in cycles. This is the hottest the planet has been since around 1000AD. So if it was so hot back in old 1000AD what where they doing to increase the temps. Was it the population at the time, NO. Was it the large amounts of industry or technology, NO. Then why was it so hot back then. Maybe its just a cycle that happens. I know Al Gore built the internet and all but come on. For every theory on global warming being caused by people only, there are others. There is a theory that our climate is more affected on the slight deviations in the tilt of the axis of the earth and its deviations in its orbit that have slow, but farther reaching climate changes then Betsy and her SUV.
  14. Maybe the dino's drove around in big SUVs, worked at big factories, and were too tied to Oil.
  15. Happy Birthday Ian!!!! Happy Birthday Shakes!!!
  16. QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Feb 5, 2007 -> 11:50 AM) The Blockbuster commercial was my favorite. The first Doritos one was quite funny though. The snickers one was funny too. The rest were eh.
  17. My favorite was the blockbuster one where they had the rabbit and the guinnie pig using the mouse. They are pushing on the mouses back and he is squeaking(its not working, try dragging it the mouse speaks more, then they figure they need to plug it in).
  18. Good luck my friend, and good hunting. Come back safe. We are all proud of you and the rest of our military. You and your brothers are the tip of the sword, and are taking the fight to these islamofacists on their own ground.
  19. My wife is an oncology nurse and she has seen and has talked about the pain and suffering of cancer patients at the hospital. 70% of cervical cancers are caused by HPV. A couple of months ago they did a special on the HPV vaccine, and then about the outcry of how people were upset about giving it to girls. My wife turned to me and said, our daughter is going to get that shot. I looked at her stomach and said, well she has to be born first I said with a smile. No, this is not up for discussion, our daughter will get the shot when she is old enough. The funny thing is that even though I am pretty conservative this wasn't something I was even contemplating keeping from her. Our daughter will be born sometime in the late March/early April time frame. My wife said that they have discussed this at work and that its no different then men over a certain age getting their PSA test. Anything and everything that can be done to prevent cancer. So when my daughter can, she will get that shot. As a father, I want her to have everything, and that includes a healthy happy life. The logic not to get this shot doesn't even make sense. So let me get this straight, people are worried that if you get a shot to protect you against one, count them one STD, that immediately the morality of their children will be compromised. Come one now. If they want to scare morality into their children, there are plenty of horrible diseases out there that are totally incurable, painful and deadly that can keep their kids in check. The upbringing and the environment and the love I give my children will present them a blueprint of morality. This is all a parent can do. Scaring your children into morality doesn't work, well strike that it works until they get into high school. A shot is not going to change your childs morality.

Shall we play a game? Proof of concept code works.
  21. QUOTE(shipps @ Feb 2, 2007 -> 02:57 PM) This is were I have gotten in trouble, manager walking in on me when Iam supposed to be working on ins policies and she sees Rockraines avatar and it looked pretty bad. You have to balance your individual work environment. My boss doesnt care, as long as things I am responsible get done. If I spend some time on soxtalk trust me when I get called at 2 in the morning next week and am up all night it, the time makes itself up. But then again that is my boss now. I have had bosses before that were paranoid on what we did, and I kept it strictly business at work. Your job is more important than what is on here. As great of a site as it is, it doesnt pay for your bills. So if you are worried about your situation, I would cut it out and catch up at night or on your lunch break.
  22. QUOTE(Y2HH @ Feb 2, 2007 -> 02:55 PM) I cannot wait for the regular season to begin. Football is great and all, but it's not baseball, nor will it ever be. I cannot wait to see the added green seats and the smell of the grilled onions again... Baseball is coming... Yay! To me the ballpark is a cathedral. Nothing like looking down at a Roger Bossard kept field. Tailgating at the ballpark. Having a polish and a beer. Fireworks after a homer. Walking out to a whitesox winner. I cant wait.
  23. QUOTE(shipps @ Feb 2, 2007 -> 02:02 PM) After repeated times that I have got in trouble at work for being on Soxtalk,it occurred to me.How many others are on Soxtalk in a disobedient manner?Wether it be at school, work, meetings, babysitting,or any other inappropriate time.Who are the soxtalk hooligans?!!! I have no problems, but then again I am the one operating the big brother equipment. This is kind of a wierd ethical subject, that has been played out on this board before. My view is this, I would rather put in blocks at a company that stop unauthorized access than worry about policing the people. However at my company its a mix of both. We work on the least privilege principle that means that we block it and make everyone go through a content proxy. Now on the other hand I have other items looking for certain words and phrases on our network and email traffic for corporate espinonage. I am more worried about our trade secrets going out, than worrying about the fact that you are looking at soxtalk. The only person that should be policing you on that is your manager. However in todays day, HR uses internet policing as a lock step path to fire someone without getting into a legal debate afterwards. Security professionals hate being the HR strong arm. It takes way too much of my time to prepare internet usage reports, perform forensics on a machine and deal with court dates. I would rather be looking for corporate spooks and hackers. For saftey at work, just assume that you are being watched at all times and everything you do is being filtered, categorized, and watched. At some companies, the security people are so sick of dealing with this subject, they have panned the administration of the web filters to HR. Now talk about dangerous.

    Apple

QUOTE(Balance @ Feb 2, 2007 -> 11:07 AM) In college, I was an avid Mac user. When I started working in the legal profession, however, everyone was using PCs. I converted to the Dark Side. Every now and then, I go to the Apple Store on Michigan Avenue, I look around, and all the Apple machines look great. But the OS has changed since I was a Mac user; it looks so unfamiliar to me. I'd definitely consider going back to a Mac when I get a new computer. But I'd have to be absolutely sure that I could work with Windows files (mostly Word and Excel) seamlessly. I currently have a Macbook intel with a a core duo proc, I run XP under a parallels virtual machine session that has my office apps, and some of my windows based apps on it on my 22 inch wide display, and my mac apps under the laptop display. With the virtualization extensions under the newer processors I get pentium 4 performance in my virtual xp session which works great. If you didnt know it you would think its running under its own machine. Now that being said, I wouldnt run a major math program like some advanced analyitics tools or CAD under a virtual machine. But for office apps and some proc intensive tools, they work fine under my virtual machine. Now the next version of parallels which is in beta has support for coherence, which will allow you to not have a virtual session up, but just have shortcuts natively on your mac to run microsoft apps under the veil of Apple. http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/coherence/ http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/beta_testing/

    Apple

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 2, 2007 -> 06:45 AM) This had me thinking. Who/What is Apple? Hardware? Software? OS? Balance of the three? It's not Motorola chips anymore. Would Apple be Apple if Dell started making computers that ran on the Mac OS? Would Apple be Apple if they offered a choice of Mac OS or Windows on their hardware? Would Apple exist if everyone was smart enough to use a PC? You can run windows on an apple with Bootcamp or as I do with parallels virtual marchine under OSX. To me when they went with the Intel Architecture they should of opened it up and allowed it to run on other systems. That would of helped OSX jump to a new level and would help with corporate acceptance. Apple has some of the most talented engineers, and some of the worst marketting strategic planning guys on earth. Microsoft has won this battle with the best marketting group on earth. Now on another note, I have been able to get Apple OSX to run on a Dell and also in a virtual session on vmware. It works relatively well.
