GM says Sox have options (Chicago Sports.com article)

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 09:22 PM) sources? multiple? Inside the organization, or otherwise? Sorry for the questions, but I'm very curious. That would be big news, obviously. And this is kind of out of the blue. started inside and leaked outside it was passed on from a number of people and got to me. When i heard who it came from it did not sound so far fetched. But im sure many of you think im bs (so be it), but i believe its gonna happen before the meetings. I heard it from a chain of people. but these people seem quite reliable. -

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 11, 2006 -> 10:17 PM) What inning do you suppose Jim Thome hits the majority of his HRs in? So If someone answers this. Let me guess you will throw some obscure statistic back? How about you answer the question. Would you have like to see Jim Thome come to the plate 9th inning, 2 outs, down by one with a runner on 3rd? Im sure I know your answer and that could be why you are in a minority on this one -

I think its also a matter of respect. I dont see a problem wearing white sox gear at say a rockies game. However, people that wear gear of their team of preference at a rival park is asking for trouble. Whether its wrong or right, trouble is gonna follow. For example, red Sox fan would not wear red sox gear to a yankees game when red sox are not playing. If one did they are asking for trouble. I also think its is disrespectful because you know what kind of reaction you are gonna get. Its almost as if you are mocking -

QUOTE(Winning Ugly @ Aug 10, 2006 -> 07:50 PM) Man I was thinking about this last night as I watched Thome ground out. I listed the exact four on the list, and man it's almost too close to call really. Tadahito has had some HUGE clutch abs in games this year, as has Paulie and JD, but Crede stands out more. Thome hasn't been clutch for us at all this season. in fact, I don't think he has many RBIs this year that occurred after the 6th inning. Whoa be careful saying Thome is not clutch around here. I got grilled last time I said that. But I feel better now because I have watched the same thing this year from him. Including last night. I guess Im not crazy ANd that was exactly what I meant when talking about clutch. HR's or big hits after 6 0r 7th. Not a homer in the 1st or third that turned out to be a beneficial in the end. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 11, 2006 -> 06:56 PM) It's just as simple as this. Tie game, must-win, bottom of the ninth...who do you want up? For me, it's sure as heck Crede. That is exactly what clutch means. And I would put JT at the bottom of that list for clutch -
Not pretty but its a win....A must needed win considering losses from Boston and Minny

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 10, 2006 -> 04:45 AM) There seems to be a good amount of people who also have this "feeling" about Jim, I at times admit that I feel it myself. But in all reality it is just not true, when you go back through the season the guy has been incredibly clutch, even as recently as last night in the 11th, what he did there is just one of those things that you don't normally remember. I think the amount of times he's been K'd late in games by LOOGYs may be skewing some opinions here, those tend to stand out more than anything. Maybe youre right. I guess when i mean clutch.I mean late in games (8th or 9th inning). A time when Crede and Dye come through. Cant remember a time when Jim's come through late in a game, but maybe he hasnt had opportunities. By all means, Im not Thome bashing, just sometimes this team reminds me of jerry Manuel teams and Jim reminds me of a member of that team. And I just dont want to go back to those times. Very one dimensional lately. But i guess I just get that feeling because our pitchers are terrible like they were back then.

sorry about that double post....but I watch every game and to me it seems Jim is good for a solo homer early in the game and thats it. I know his numbers indicate a great year but I just cant help myself from getting a sinking feeling when he comes up late in games. When I think of clutch I do not think of Jim Thome. I think of Joe Crede and Jermaine Dye. And there has to be a reason why I think these guys are and Jims not. But i guess Im crazy if Im the only one who thinks he could come through a lot more late in games. Dont know what team im watching I guess.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 10, 2006 -> 04:11 AM) Also, on the whole Thome thing, Jim has 3 HRs close and late which is equal to Konerko and 1 behind both Dye and Crede who have 4. So yeah, he's not not just hitting meaningless HRs. One more thing, 4/22/06 Jim Thome single handedly won this game against the best pitcher in baseball. First of all, I dont know what that first part of your post means But 3 out of 34 homers doesnt sound too convincing. Secondly, if you have to go back to April before you can remember a time where he came through for us in the clutch, there is a problem there. And hes hasd plenty of opportunities

QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Aug 10, 2006 -> 04:05 AM) I think blaming Thome is way off base here. Look at his statistics, he's having a monster season. Without Thome, we aren't .5 games up on the WC (or maybe .5 back, if the Twins won). What about the 7-8-9 today? Bases loaded, no out, and we get three straight outs? Thats bad, bad news. Im not blaming Thome. Yes his numbers are very indicative of a great year statistically. However, he reminds he of sammy sosa when with the cubs. Great numbers statistically if not better, but when it came to teh clutch, he was no where to be found. And if you remember those years, these two players seem very much a like IMO

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 10, 2006 -> 04:03 AM) Jim Thome has 18 HR with runners on, that's over half of his total HRs which is pretty damn good. 9 HR, 50 RBI, .367/.500/.785/1.285 W/ RISP. 34 AB, 2 HR, 11 RBI .265/.390/.471/.861 W/ RISP & 2 out, still not horrible. Jim Thome is not the problem, there are so many other players to who deserve so much more blame. Nice numbers but can you name the last time he got a clutch hit for us at a crucial time? I watch every game and it seems like every time he comes up late in a game and we need a homer or hit, he doesnt do anything If u know a time when hes come through when needed..Please refresh my memory

QUOTE(Colorado Sox Fan @ Aug 10, 2006 -> 03:54 AM) If Riske does his job, maybe Sox win. Another ESPN game where we're getting blown out, make an incredible comeback and then fall short. Ugh. Jim Thome, please do something one of these days, meaningless solo homer, strikeout or walk isn't cutting it. Win ballgames for us, stud. Cant agree more with the Thome comment. He cant get a clutch hit to save his life. May sound crazy but Id rather have ross gload hitting in that situation than Thome. Solo homer in the first inning is not gonna do anything for us. AHHH hes so frustrating Old cliche. "Dont tell me what you hit, Tell me when you hit it"

Paulie needs to score on a double. He needs to be looking at the right fielder and the right fielder was obviously playing it off the wall with his back to the infield...Horrendous base running once again

Im glad that people have begun to open their eyes. Ive been saying that ozzie's inability to manage a pitching staff is killing this team. Along with our arguably #1 pitcher throwing like a b i t c h. Those are the problems with this team Well maybe someone can open a "Javy Sucks" thread to make everyone feel better -
at least the yankees look like they wanna win.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 06:59 PM) Coco Crisp offered for Mark Buehrle and Brad WIlkerson offered for one of our starters? What is up with that? Aren't starting pitchers at a premium? Shouldn't we be getting better offers than this? I just find this ridiculous. not when our starters are pitching like crap
-
When people realize mark buehrle is the key to sox success and downfall we wont do crap. He should be moved to the bullpen before javy. I feel like im watching a different team than most of you. Hes done it in the past and we have relied on him in the past to be our stopper. Like stated before, we do not have much time to wait for vaz to to turn it around. I thik the same can be said for mark buehrle who is arguably our number one pitcher. Vaz is not the problem with this team. He has never been more than a 500. pitcher, nto saying we cant expect mroe out of him, but he has never done anything to prove other wise. And i will take a guaranteed 5 good innings every time out of him. Cant say the same for mark who cant get out of the 3rg without giving up 7-8 runs. People, i know its hard to point the finger at a fan favorite, but you must realize that he is a huge contributer to the sox struggles. Im not saying javy isnt either, but i knew what we were getting from him when we picked him up, hes never done anything to prove other wise. And im sure someone will respond with "He better pitch better, we are paying him a boat load." Well it is javy's fault that for soem reason he cant get past the beyond the 5th inning, but he never asked for that big of a contract. GM's around baseball were stupid enough to pay the guy all that money when he hasnt proven to be a good pitcher since his days in montreal. And whether people like it or not, in baseball you have #1's and #5's. Thats why you usually have your #1 pitching game 1 of the world series, and #5 game 5. And thats what javy is, a #5. Maybe hes not paid like a number 5, but hes never done anything in the past to who hes better than a number 5. Sorry for the long thread, but you guys are missing the biggest problem here. Mark buehle is just that. Javy's problem can be fixed with some easy tinkering of the pen. I cant say the same for buehrle and i dont know how much longer you can wait around

QUOTE(Jake @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 03:39 AM) That doesn't mean we should expect him to be just a .500 pitcher. Im not saying that.I realize he is not pitching up to his potential. But if he can give us 5 good innings then just a pitching change when he gives up a hit or walk then problem solved. We have a solid bullpen. We just have to utilize it. My point is we knew what we were getting when KW over paid for him. I just dont understand the high expectations when we have seen what hes done in the past. Its not fair that Vaz name gets dragged through the mud when mark buehrle and garcia have pitched just as bad if not worse. At least when Vaz goes out there I know we are onna get 5 good innings. Cant say the same for Buehrle ,Garcia QUOTE(Jake @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 03:39 AM) That doesn't mean we should expect him to be just a .500 pitcher. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 03:28 AM) No he's not. KW didn't pay a hefty amount for him to have his ERA now 5.50. Did he not know what he was paying for? Look at his career. He is a 500. pitcher. Take it up with Kenny Williams -

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jul 31, 2006 -> 12:36 AM) That's a defeatist attitude. We certainly didn't give up one of our top prospects, a decent reliever and a comparable starting pitcher (effectiveness-wise....did I just make up a word?) for a 5th starter. Ignore where the guys pitch in the rotation. All 5 guys going into this season were supposed to be #1 through #3 starters on any other staff in this league. Vazquez has a helluva big contract and shouldn’t be considered 'just our 5th starter'. If Kenny thought he'd have a guy who pitched like a below average 5th starter with a high ERA and inability to get into the 7th inning then I'm sure he wouldn't have made this deal. We could have found a much less expensive guy to throw out there and perform equally poorly. Or we could have just put our best pitching prospect in that spot kind of like the Tigers and Twins did. Could not disagree with you more. Has Vaz in teh past shown he can get into the 7th inning. No, that is why he has been with 3 teams in 3 years. However, he is our 5th starter. And hes performing adequatley for a 5th starter. If ozzie adjusts his bullpen in his starts then we would be fine. Good starting pitching today is hard to come by. Thats why it is very difficult for teams to find starting pitching now a days. ANd that could be another reason why KW may have over paid for him. Like i said, whether you like it or not he is our 5th starter. Maybe it is kenny williams fault for overpaying for a guy that everyone knew is a 500. pitcher. If the sox starters of 05 showed up this season , and ozzie finally learned how to manage his pitchers we wouldnt be in this predicament. As much as Vaz has not pitched to his capabilities this year, he has been serviceable. I just wish ozzie knew how to use him. Look to mark buehrle and freddy Garcia and you will find what is wrong with this team -

I think everyone keeps forgetting here that vaz is our 5th starter. He will give us 5 quality innings every time out. After that 5th then we are in trouble. Knowing this, it is up to ozzie to make the pitching change immediatley when vaz gives up a walk or hit in the 6th. I dont think it is that difficult. You have bmac warming up prior to or in the 6th inning waiting for vaz to make a mistake. Like I said, Vaz will gve us 5 good innings every time out. After that, we are in trouble and its ozzies job to learn to adjust. And its really not that hard of an adjustment. I know we all love having Vaz as our whipping boy,but his problem can be fixed if ozzie would take the situation in his own hands. I think people need to start looking at mark buehrle as our main problem here. He cant even give us 3 innings without giving up 7 or 8 runs. If he cant turn it around soon then you have to move someone into the rotation in mark's place becuase I will take vaz 5 good innings of pitching with an arm waiting if he gets in trouble, rather than running mark out there and us being out of the game by the 4th inning -
Im putting this game solely on ozzie and neal cotts. We know javy will implode every 6th inning and knowing this, ozzie still does not take him out after he gives up a lead off homer. Then he finally brings in neal with trouble and ofcourse cotts blows the lead. Cotts has been terrible lately and anyone can hit that 93 mph fast ball straight over the top right down the middle. I thought with MacD our bullpen was in good shape but we need another arm because cotts is batting practice right now. You can blame javy all u want, we know what hes gonna give us. It is ozzies responsibility to to manage to his players abilities, and neal's job as a stopper to hold the lead in pressure situations.
