  1. I just want to say I love mlb network. I'm now watching the 40 most memorable fan moments and it really brings back some funny memories . Morganna the Kissing Bandit (google it if you don't know about her) , the kid who caught 2 foul balls in the same at bat, disco demolition, Bartman , fans throwing Reggie bars after a Jackson HR against the Sox , ARod's return to Seattle with Monopoly money floating down onto the field and many more.
  2. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 18, 2010 -> 06:39 AM) You misinterpreted what I said. Of course the overall team is going to have to perform. But a healthy, productive Peavy makes what should be a good team into one that can legitimately challenge for the AL pennant, assuming, of course, the rest of the team performs. There's no upside with guys like Danks, Floyd and Buehrle. They are what they are. You just hope they can match that. A good to great Jake Peavy adds a whole nother element. I'll have to disagree with the bolded part. Both Danks and Floyd are still young and either one is capable of having a break out year. If both do at the same time, say this year for instance, things will be looking mighty rosy.
  3. Good luck Bobby. Thanks for the memories. Bobby joining the ex White Sox brigade in Boston with Randy Williams and Clevelan Santeliz.
  4. RIP Rapid Robert . One of the last of the legends who played in the 1940's.
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 02:11 AM) #1, because of his size, he's not fast, but he's definitely quicker than Konerko. I think he played basketball out in California, in high school or junior college. He has a bit more leaping ability, although that's not saying much. #2, he wouldn't cost us any draft picks AND we'd get the 2 picks from Konerko (of course, with the D-Backs it would be protected, so 2nd round) #3, we'd be in on him for only a one year deal, so we'd have flexibility going forward we didn't with the likes of Teahen, Linebrink, Pierre, Buehrle coming off the books or being traded, the certainty that we'll know where we are with both Peavy and Sale (well, hopefully this time next year their futures will both be clearly defined)...in other words, it doesn't force our hand with Viciedo seemingly unable to play 3B, although LF/RF are still possibilities for 2010, surely he'll get a Josh Fields-like shot at one of them just to see how good he could do out there, which can't seemingly be worse than Dye or Quentin the last 2 seasons I don't know, I'd rather sign Dye for just one year and work all off-season on transitioning him to 1B (let's say it's a contract for $5 million) and spending that other $10 million on relievers, spreading it among 2-3 veteran guys and knowing/predicting one will go bust. I'm thinking of pitchers here like Guerrier or Crain, maybe a notch below what Crain will get, because I'm expecting coming off his 2010 season that he'll get at least $4.5-5.5 million from some team...I would be shocked if he signs for under $4. Guerrier should come in at that $3.0-4.0 range....I want no part of paying the type of money we gave to Linebrink and Dotel...give me 3 guys at $3.333 instead of two at $5 million per. Nice thinking out of the box but I'm not sure KW would even consider this on his flow chart.
  6. The Cubs signing Pena for that amount really makes the Dunn deal seem like even more of a steal but definitely cost the Sox on Konerko or whoever replaces him. Hurry on D. Lee if we end up going in that direction. GM's spending like drunken sailors. KW's has to be fuming and signing Konerko is looking much farther away.
  7. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 06:18 PM) So having surgery to fix a problem that bothered him all year is going to make him worse? It certainly could . Things take time to heal and regain strength. I'm just giving reasons why not a whole lots of GM's are knocking on his door right now. I consider La Roche a safer bet to have a better healthier season. We'll see how it plays out.
  8. QUOTE (beckham15 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 06:16 PM) LaRoche is going to want probably a 4 year deal....if we did that we might as well trade Dayan for something that can help us now Possibly, after all seems like he might end up with the Nationals and who wouldn't want to be with them the way they're throwing money around. no reason to trade Dayan . He could use another season in the minors and if he's ready in 2012 trade La Roche or D. Lee whoever ends up at 1st. Signing Paulie seems to block Viciedo just as much but I don't want him traded. He could be a very big bat cheap one day.
  9. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 06:13 PM) Yet still put up .298 .373 .888 in the second half with those debilitating injuries. But off season thumb surgery could change all that.
  10. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 06:00 PM) Why commit to an average player when you can risk going for a much better player on a shorter contract, and hope that your best positional prospect is ready to take over fully next year. Makes too much sense. Doesn't have to be a big commitment to LaRoche but we're better off with him in case Viciedo never reaches his promise. I also can't see why you would consider Lee a better player now coming off thumb surgery his age and his back. Sure he WAS a better player than Adam LaRoche might ever be but LaRoche is a safer bet to stay healthy and play a full season and for 25 HR and 100 RBI's considering the negatives weighing against Lee.
  11. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:45 PM) It's a valid debate of course. But we'd have to weigh which is more likely: Lee bouncing back from injury and having one of his normal years, or LaRoche having a year better than any he's ever had. Like many here, I'd want at minimum .350 OBP, 25+ HR from the 1B. LaRoche can do this but I'm just thinking about who's more likely to do it. LaRoche's relative youth doesn't do tons for me since I don't know that any guy we get is going to be getting a long term contract or anything. It'd be different if he was doing what he's doing in his 20s. I'm surprised no one mentioned that all we need is a stop gap player at the position if Paulie leaves like you just did. I'm just more comfortable with a healthier player in his prime than an old guy who's had injury problems with recent surgery on his thumb. His fielding is superior but doesn't matter much if he hurts himself in the process. And we all know how coming off surgery on a hand can affect hitting a baseball. I know LaRoche is considered average at his position but his road splits aren't much different than his home splits and that counts for something when playing in AZ.
  12. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:36 PM) Yeah thats another thing. LaRoche has not had a year like Lee's '09. Ok but Lee is 35, had off season thumb surgery and a bad back . LaRoche is 30/31 and has a relatively clean bill of health. Do you really want an old guy with a bad back coming off thumb surgery at 1st base ? It's asking for trouble.
  13. If Konerko goes elsewhere why does everyone like D. Lee so much better than Adam LaRoche ? LaRoche is 4 years younger than both Kornerko and Lee.
  14. Don't forget about Adam LaRoche. We could have two Adam's. He's LH with pop. Not sure about his fielding but it's better then Dunn's and better than Konerko's in some aspects.
  15. My post in the AJ signs thread was " hell yea that's Linebrink money". I wonder if I knew something.
  16. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 09:50 AM) Right on. I remember his rookie year. I hated him as a Cub. I was at Comiskey Park for opening day in 1974 and saw his White Sox debut.....ugh. but, I was kinda excited about what he may have brought to the Sox though that didn't work out very well. There was Ron Santo Pizza though, that was pretty good. I have to admit that I loved his enthusiasm and love for the game. For that I will surely miss him. As for the HOF, when Brooks Robinson went in, Santo should have too, in my opinion. I was going to say something about the Pizza Man in my earlier post but I couldn't remember why they called him that. Thanks.
  17. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 05:33 AM) Wow, the idea of Viciedo for Bell would really be going for it. I'd hate to trade that kind of talent for a closer. Since he's arb-eligible anyway and we have to pay him I'd rather pay Putz. Then, if we're going to trade Dayan, either target a young starter with top-3 ability or go after a dynamic young reliever with legit closing potential. Dayan has serious talent and he should fetch someone who has real potential and will be under control cheaply for a while. BTW during the whole Dunn/Rizzo/Kenny/Jackson s*** over the deadline, when Rizzo said he just needed "one player" to complete that deal, I think (just my guess) he was talking about Dayan. I'm sure he knew he couldn't get Gordon and that was probably just the starting point. I anticipate that Dayan's value around the league is actually quite a bit higher than it is on this board or in the eyes of some of the publications. The dude can flat out murder the baseball and he makes contact with it a lot. And he's really young, too - just 22 next season. I agree. I love his bat and think he can be a much better hitter than Beckham. Not sure if he's valued or not by Soxtalk , but if that's the case it's because he has shown nothing with the glove yet and past prospects with potential have disappointed.
  18. I'd like to see the Sox take a flyer on Lastings Milledge since he was non tendered by the Pirates and will only be 26 at the beginning of the 2011 season. He was the 12th overall pick in the year he was drafted and could still blossom and he plays a decent RF and has good speed. Shouldn't be expensive.
  19. As a boy in Chicago during a time when the Cubs had so many great players on their team Santo was always my favorite. Even though I was a Sox fan I had a place in my heart for Santo. We shared the same 1st name and a love of 3rd base. Santo handled his diabetes with grace and class raising money and spending time with children's diabetic organizations. He seemed to have a good sense of humor and handled aging and being an amputee very well and inspired many in the same position . Rest in peace Ronnie.
  20. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 07:39 PM) I mean, no matter if you wanted us to bring him back or let him move on, it's hard to argue $4 million a year. Hell yea, that's Linebrink money .
  21. The one day I haven't seen Hot Stove yet is today. Instead I've got Ken Burns baseball , which has been discussing Babe Ruth vs. Ty Cobb or how small ball lost out to the long ball. Seems kind of appropriate with today's Dunn signing.
  22. I wonder if LaRoche get's a better deal than Konerko ? Opinions ?
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 11:50 AM) Viciedo in the OF is a bad idea, as the rumor is that he has an extremely difficult time catching fly balls. Yea I've read that too about his depth perception or something along those lines . Had trouble with pop ups but I didnt see that when he was up with the Sox at all. So if it's feasible I'd take a shot and if it doesn't stick OK but if he shows promise let it ride.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 2, 2010 -> 11:37 AM) Really, this sounds like a terrible idea to me. They say he's got a real good arm and always hear people saying maybe he could play OF although usually hear LF ala Carlos Lee. So why not RF to take advantage of his arm ? Dunn and La Roche both LH which we need and 1st baseman so that leaves Viciedo out at 1st and Morel probably gets 1st shot at 3rd base so giving it a shot in spring training wouldn't hurt.
