  1. QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 12:27 PM) I'll take a shot at the 15 cuts to come: Colon and Nix on the DL. P: Broadway, MacDougal, Marquez, Russell, Wassermann, Williams C: Lucy, Stewart IF: Beckham, Broussard, Torres OF: Kroeger, Owens This means the bullpen will be Poreda, Thornton, Egbert, Carrasco, Dotel, Linebrink, Jenks Richard will be the 5th starter. That's not bad (assuming the Sox don't make any trades) though I still have a hard time thinking Poreda will be in the pen.
  2. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 11:30 AM) Yup Jenks Line Thornton Dotel Richard Carrasco Marquez/Wass I think the Carrasco, Marquez/Wass spots are completely up for grabs with Egbert being the current leader. If Colon isn't ready to start the season Richard is still the favorite for 5th starter which leave room for another lefty in the pen.
  3. QUOTE (Cubano @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 11:52 AM) I am mourning. Don't be too sad. Viciedo opened a lot of eyes with his power and agility at 3rd base. He's still well ahead of the curve just having turned 20 and in AAA. Now you have to keep tabs on him through the Future Sox section and the Charlotte Knights website and you can listen to their games for free. http://www.charlotteknights.com/
  4. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 10:46 AM) Full list from Sox website press releases : * Optioned C Cole Armstrong, RHP Jon Link and 3B Dayan Viciedo to Class AAA Charlotte; * Optioned INF Brandon Allen, RHP Jhonny Nunez and RHP Clevelan Santeliz to Class AA Birmingham; * RHP Ryan Braun, INF Javier Castillo, C Tyler Flowers, RHP Franklyn German, OF Michael Restovich and RHP John Van Benschoten were reassigned to minor-league camp. I wasn't too far off in my predictions from yesterdays game thread: I'll guess around 10 get cut: Von Benschoten, Link,Flowers, German, Santeliz, Torres, Restovich, Broussard, Castillo. Ryan Braun if he's there . Missed on Viciedo, Nunez, Allen,Armstrong,Broussard, Torres. Thought they would keep Vicedo and Allen around longer since they have so much power potential. Torres probably got a reprieve after Nix got hurt and he had that late inning 2 run triple yesterday. Still need a backup SS and the Sox won't keep Beckham around as a backup. Sox trimmed the logjam at catcher more than I thought they would. Thought the Sox might let Broussard go early to let him try to catch on with another team since they seem to have plenty of 1st base/DH types in the minors.
  5. QUOTE (Sully Baseball @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 10:50 AM) Joe Horlen was right up there... and some of that was emotional for me. Obviously Ed Walsh and Ted Lyons are in the homegrown rotation. Not including them would be laughable. Jack McDowell and Alex Fernandez I felt should be on there. Now I included Britt Burns in the rotation because I felt he was a good pitcher and I always admired how he pitched his a-- off in the last game against the Orioles and if the White Sox scored a single run, he'd be the guy credited of saving the pennant for the White Sox. Not his fault. (Also I snuck some into the bullpen) Now if you think that I should omit Burns or omit Salome Barojas from the bullpen and stick Joe Horlen onto the roster... that would be fair. I might do that. I make corrections and changes here and there... I might do that. I need to finish the Cubs post first. They should be a fun lot to deal with (rolling eyes) I've lived through the years of many on your list including Allen, Wood, Aparicio even Wilhelm. Joel Horlen and Ken Berry were my favorite Sox back when I was a kid.
  6. QUOTE (Sully Baseball @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 10:49 AM) Thanks for reading my post. Glad to see so many White Sox fans clicking on it. And I have to say I've written 25 of these so far and have found that White Sox fans have been very cool and not leaving "He's a Retard" posts on the blog. Let me address a few things: I've never read this article. I put the team together based on BaseballReference.com (the single greatest website in the history of mankind) and weighing heavily the 2005 team along with the 1917, 1959, 1983 and 1993 teams. I always lean heavily towards post season success. That's why I had to put Doc White in there (he's a White Sox pitcher who beat the Cubs to win a World Series... you people should be naming your children after him!!!) Contreras beating my Red Sox and clinching the first pennant since Eisenhower was in office was what gave him a spot for me. But trust me, I understand wanting Freddie Garcia (or Jon Garland for that matter) on the roster. It's a challenge writing these bad boys and there will inevitably be a person or two who gets left off. As for Albert Belle... yes he was great those two years in Chicago... but they weren't the greatest years for the Sox. I know, not his fault, but as a fan of the White Sox, wouldn't you rather show your love to Jermaine Dye, Scott Podsednik, Ron Kittle, Paul Kornerko and Minnie Minoso? For Jim Thome... BELIEVE ME that was a tough call for me. Basically it boiled down to Dick Allen or Jim Thome. Thome is a great player. There is NO WAY on Heaven, Hell or Earth I am leaving Dick Allen off of this list. Roberto Hernandez was REALLY hard to leave off. But I know I needed Jenks. Hoyt Wilhem needed to be on. Wilbur Wood needed to be on. And it would be wrong to not honor Doc White. (See above) So it boiled down to Keith Foulke, Roberto Hernandez or Jerry Staley. And as I said in the post, I wrestled with it and I gave the slot to Staley based on his role with the 1959 champs. I loved the article. I left you the comment about Johnny Mostil. I was just pointing out that for those interested there are simliar things on the web. Didn't mean to imply there was plagiarism involved. That was not my intention. Great job Sully. Edit. Mostil was a distant cousin according to my old man.
  7. QUOTE (Cali @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 12:38 AM) ^ I agree with that line-up. Also, I dont care how well Richard is doing this ST, he is NOT a big league starter. He proved it last season, he'll get through 4 or 5 innings then blow-up. Every line-up adjusted after one AB. He's suited for long-relief out of the pen and that's it. Marquez > Richard. Hopefully Contreras can take that 4th spot quickly and Marquez can be #5 until Colon is ready/goes on the DL You do know that almost every starter in the history of baseball has gone through some period of adjustment and just doesn't go from the minors to the majors and have instant success don't you ? It will happen to Marquez just as it happened to Richard just as it happened to Greg Maddux and Sandy Koufax.
  8. Full list from Sox website press releases : * Optioned C Cole Armstrong, RHP Jon Link and 3B Dayan Viciedo to Class AAA Charlotte; * Optioned INF Brandon Allen, RHP Jhonny Nunez and RHP Clevelan Santeliz to Class AA Birmingham; * RHP Ryan Braun, INF Javier Castillo, C Tyler Flowers, RHP Franklyn German, OF Michael Restovich and RHP John Van Benschoten were reassigned to minor-league camp.
  9. Funny thread. I always love it when we're not so serious 'round here. "Wally" Richard has a nice ring to it.
  10. Bard's a switch hitter and actually hits better right handed . Pretty decent hitter when not injured ( he had ankle problems with the Pads last year). Don't know much about his defense except he had problems catching Tim Wakefield's knuckleball.
  11. There was a similar article in Sox Machine ( one of the best Sox blogs out there) and seems as though many of his picks came from the Sox release of the all-time team that was out in 2000 (which you can find somewhere on the Sox website.
  12. The key thing in this article is hearing that his wrist has been sore. It's possible we won't see the same kind of power from Q we saw last year. So far no HR's in ST and Derrek Lee suffered a power outage after he broke his wrist. Longoria and Vernon Wells also suffered broken wrists and after a quick scan of their splits after coming off the DL , I didn't notice any discernible loss of power. Miguel Tejada also broke his wrist and his power was down but he's on the down side of his career so that's to be expected.
  13. QUOTE (daa84 @ Mar 17, 2009 -> 07:16 PM) getz will likely be the starter, but id prefer to see Nix on the bench than lillibridge, especially if Nix can play SS I think at this point most of us prefer Nix over Lillibridge however the point of the article is that he's hurt now and possibly won't be ready for opening day.
  14. And what about Randy Williams ? Zero ERA so far veteran lefty. He hasn't eliminated himself from the competition yet.
  15. This makes Getz the overwhelming favorite but also gives more playing time to Beckham and Lillibridge a few more chances to fix the giant hole in his bat. Most of us here realize that almost no matter how well Beckham performed this spring he was most likely destined for the minors. Now Beckham has a legit shot to stick.
  16. QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Mar 17, 2009 -> 04:47 PM) Accdg to the box score it was Braun that gave up the 4 run inning, not DJ. Gameday at the time had it as Carrasco .Braun probably wasn't recognized since it was his 1st appearance of the spring. Thanks for the heads up.
  17. Patrick Elias also became the all-time Devils point leader with an assist on NJ's 3rd goal. Needless to say Brodeur and Elias where the 1st and 2nd stars of the game.
  18. Hawks just lost again to the NJ Devils 3-2 on the NHL network. Going on right now is Martin Brodeur cutting off the netting from the goal to celebrate becoming the winningest goalie in NHL History surpassing Patrick Roy.
  19. Sox have tied it in the 9th. Eider Torres with a 2 run triple and Restovich sac fly . 6-6
  20. QUOTE (scenario @ Mar 17, 2009 -> 02:36 PM) I'm guessing that both Richard and Marquez come north with the team... and that both get a couple of starts in April. I think they'll leave Colon in extended spring training until the weather in Chicago warms up a little. I'd agree on Richard. Marquez still throws a lot of flyballs for a sinkerballer. I do think he'll be around until the final cut at least since he was a key piece in the Swisher trade. I think if Marquez makes it then Carrasco won't.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 17, 2009 -> 03:04 PM) Carrasco getting shelled. 4 run 7th. Hey, Anderson has an OF assist today. That's like 4 already for him this spring.
  22. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Mar 17, 2009 -> 03:05 PM) I believe there's another rounds of cuts coming up by the end of this week, should be interesting to see who goes. I'll guess around 10 get cut: Von Benschoten, Link,Flowers, German, Santeliz, Torres, Restovich, Broussard, Castillo. Ryan Braun if he's there . He was invited but can't recall seeing him in any games.
  23. Carrasco got shelled. 4 runs by Az. in the 7th . Sox come back with 2 in 8th, Betemit driving in all 3 Sox runs so far. 6-3 AZ.
  24. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 16, 2009 -> 05:37 PM) The biggest thing with Josh is his bat speed, he's finally catching up to fastballs, something he couldn't do in 2007. That's the sort of thing that tends to carry over into the regular season. I think that has a lot to do with just picking up the ball earlier out of the pitchers hand . He can actually see it now instead of it being just a blur.
  25. QUOTE (qwerty @ Mar 16, 2009 -> 03:54 PM) From everything he has said about owens in the past up until this very day there is no doubt he is a fan of owens. He always gives owens the benefit of the doubt. I did find this on page 5 of the recent "Ozzie doesnt think Owens is playing too well" thread dated March 12th from Balta : "With the way he's hitting right now and the fact that he seemingly can't run, I have difficulty thinking anyone else would grab him on waivers to put him on their big league roster." Not only does he think he can't hit or run but doesn't even see a place for him in the majors. Surely not an Owens fanboy. I know I vowed not to speak for him but this speaks for itself and took minimum research.
