  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 3, 2009 -> 06:51 PM) With the way the market has fallen off for corner OF's, if we could get Bailey for Dye + $3 million, I'd probably do that deal. So the Reds would take on Dye's $11.5 mill + give up another $3 mill. + Bailey so pay out $14.5 mill and give up a prospect when Abreu is probably there for the taking for $10 mill. ?
  2. QUOTE (sayitaintso @ Feb 3, 2009 -> 06:28 PM) Welcome to Soxtalk! And if you think this is long, you ain't seen nothing yet. Yea most game threads are longer than this.
  3. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 3, 2009 -> 10:59 AM) Why exactly? He hit .379 .408 .537 in the 9th spot last season in 30 games. He spent most of the season in the 7,8.9 spot if you remember with his best results coming in the 9 hole and second best out of the 8th spot. His OPS in the 9th spot was .945 which compares to the 8th: .882 7th: .697 He gets the benefit of having people on base in front of him and also adding some speed to the lineup as it turns over. He is a power/speed/RBI threat at the bottom of the order which is perfect IMO. I think those stats are basically meaningless with a completely unknown guy in his rookie season. Just guessing here but I'm thinking Alexei batted ninth mostly in the 1st half of the year when pitchers didn't have a book on him yet. Maybe pitchers relax more with an unknown rookie batting 9th. Who really knows why some one hits better 9th rather than 7th or 8th. Could be he was facing better pitching when he batted 7th or 8th or just saw better pitches to hit when batting 9th. What holds true for 1 yr. doesn't necessarily hold true for the next year especially with a rookie. Not that him batting 9th is a terrible idea its just that I'd rather have him getting 4/5 AB's/game than 3/4.
  4. I know the Sox were 1st in HR's and 1st in hitting into DP's last year in the AL. A few less home runs and a lot less DP's isn't a bad thing.
  5. Any team that is willing to take on Dye's contract won't be willing to give up too much talent. Basically you're trading for salary flexibility and minor league talent while giving up very good but older ML talent. After the 2009 season is over and Thome's contract is off the books the 2010 White Sox will look a whole lot different than they do now. I suspect at this point the Sox would do just about anything to rid themselves of Dye's salary if they knew they could get Abreu for a cheaper 1 yr. deal. There's no way the Sox would put themselves in the position of trying to deal Dye after getting Abreu. Dye must go 1st.
  6. It's getting pretty close to spring training and with so many free agents still out there they're are going to have to swallow their pride and accept some offers. It's not like $8 million a year is a terrible offer but it is half his salary of a year ago. Maybe he'll get a better offer maybe not, but a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. In this economy Dye's salary is an albatross so if we end up with a Figgins for Dye trade most of Soxtalk would b**** about not getting enough. But think of what we do get , a younger, faster , cheaper more versatile player who fills a huge hole in CF . Then most likely 2 of the 3 headed monster we call CF candidates of Owen/Anderson/Wise don't make the 25 man roster. Also Quentin can move to RF the position he's best at. Abreu/Figgins > Dye.
  7. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Jan 30, 2009 -> 08:08 PM) jesus do we need 20HR hitters at every position? this team has plenty of power already. You're right. I agree thats why I threw in gap power too. Nothings wrong with not hitting HR's as long as you hit doubles and triples once in a while.
  8. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Jan 30, 2009 -> 04:33 PM) boy i can't wait to read all of the "i knew Jerry Owens was good" comments on the board, when he hits .280 with a .345 OBP and 50SB next year if he wins the starting job. those numbers, by the way, are basically his 2nd half 2007 numbers factored out for an entire year. I will never say that because he will never do that for a full season.
  9. QUOTE (GREEDY @ Jan 30, 2009 -> 06:35 PM) I think most people's problem with Owens is his defense. Jesse Owens also f***ing fast, BAD in CF. So his age, injuries, lack of gap or HR power, being on the roster and being an actual candidate to become a starter mean nothing ?
  10. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 27, 2009 -> 11:33 AM) What's Berry look like up close and personal? I always thought she was a classic beauty. Couldn't tell you because it was a gift.
  11. Game 5 of the LCS against Anaheim during the 7th inning Pepsi stretch they show Sox fans in the stands . One of my friends from childhood who lives here in SoCal has his kid on his lap. Look for a little blonde kid with glasses wearing a Sox cap. The dad is a member here but never posts anything. I was there too just off camera.
  12. I only have a few autographs Willie Mays , Mickey Mantle and Muhammed Ali.. oh yea can't forget my Dave Justice and Halle Berry signed baseball
  13. To celebrate the signing of Colon I will be watching Fat Albert , Chun Yun Fat movies, 300 (he's gotta weigh that much now ) and listening to Fat Bottomed Girls (Queen).
  14. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 09:14 PM) I do think it would be funny if Henderson came back and played in the big leagues after getting inducted. If anyone would do it, it'd be him. There's our leadoff hitter.
  15. If we had got the good Ryan Braun it would have been up in the important topics.
  16. Yea yea Dye, Konerko , Poreda , Beckham for E.Santana, Howie Kendick, Kendry Morales, Chone Figgins. Green green green green green Throw in Getz or Lillibridge too .
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 11, 2009 -> 04:15 PM) You're forgetting we are in the AL Central and that we still face the NL in interleague play...we're not in the AL East, fortunately. Imagine being a Blue Jays or Orioles fan heading into this season? Not much fun. As of right now, we're looking at 70-82 wins and 80-92 losses. Somewhere in that range. I can't see us as anything better than a .500 club with three new starters, including a very questionable leadoff hitter, some uncertainty surrounding Linebrink being as good as he was in 2008 (first four months) and all the holes in our starting rotation. But 100 losses? I don't think so. Players like Getz and Lillibridge will probably end up giving the White Sox more of a boost than you give them credit for, and Viciedo and Beckham can have a huge impact as well in the 2nd half of the season to give us a "second wind," not to mention Contreras. I think the bigger concern would be injuries/aging across the board with Dye, Konerko, Thome and AJ...those four, in particular. Granted, the Twins weren't expected to contend at all coming into last season and hung in there all season, but their pitching possibilities looked more hopeful than ours at the back end of the rotation. I don't want to quibble over a few losses . Let's face it we got lucky last year in that Ramirez, Quentin, Dank's , and Floyd all were major contributors. That kind of luck doesn't happen 2 years in a row. I'll soften my stance to say we won't come near competing with the roster as it stands now. But there's no chance in hell it stays the way it is now. The real question is do we pick up more question marks like Homer Bailey and more Cubans with the payroll remaining basically the same or actually try to compete which has been KW'S M.O.
  18. Thanks for the update. Maybe KW's been so busy trying to get the Cubans that little else has mattered to him. Who could blame him if this was true. Both Cubans under 30 and with Viciedo and Ramirez to supply a bit of home the Sox had this golden opportunity drop right in their laps.
  19. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jan 11, 2009 -> 03:28 PM) really? I didn't think losing Big-Game Javi would cost us26 wins. News to me. Just 3 starters ( no Javy and no Contreras) with Carrasco and Richard having the most ML experience yea if that happens along with the current roster dwellers manning other positions it's 100 losses. Now I don't expect the current roster to be exactly the same to start the season but its getting kind of scary and I know I'm not the only Sox fan holding his breathe right now.
  20. QUOTE (BobDylan @ Jan 11, 2009 -> 02:54 PM) ADD and ADHD are different. http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/learning/adhd.html Read under the heading symptoms.
  21. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 11, 2009 -> 08:27 AM) This has been predicted several times by several people on the board. If it's non-guaranteed, I have absolutely no problem with it, as I trust Freddy as a #4 more than I trust Marquez. How pitiful is our rotation that you trust Garcia as a 4th over Marquez ? Now imagine going into the season that way . Hello 100 losses.
  22. For those of you who don't know . ADHD is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder . It used to be called ADD . You can google ADHD and find out more about it but it seems apparent that by the amount of cases ptatc is right . Players are trying once again to gain a competitive advantage through ADHD drugs .
  23. Just watched the Don Larsen perfect game. Picked it up in the 8th inning. I'm watching and listening to the announcer and it occurs to me Vin Scully is the announcer . Made me really appreciate how he's witnessed so much baseball, so many historic moments and playersand he's still at it any time I want to watch a Dodger game. There hadn't even been a perfect game in MLB since 1922 and Larsen had no idea that's what it was called. He just thought he threw a no-hitter.
  24. Sorry for forgetting the link. I was on my way out the door for work.
