Great Big Hurt Hall of Fame Article

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 01:36 PM) very true on all counts. and even when he wasn't leading the league in all these stats, he was near the top and was generally surpassed by a 'roider. look it up. Missed a 3rd MVP to Giambi and missed more than few All-Star games due to to likes of McGwire , Giambi and maybe Palmeiro. Haven't looked up the years he missed on being an All-Star but 5 appearances is pretty low for a hitter of his stature. -
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 02:22 PM) probably because of the strong starts they're getting from Lee, Westbrook and Carmona. They must figure that the hitting will have to click at some point, and when it does... ...and when it does then they can rank them higher but until then they suck.

QUOTE (Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Apr 20, 2008 -> 09:47 AM) I think Frank is done. I have trouble seeing another team picking him up, especially with all the homeless DH's already out there (Piazza, Bonds). Frank was just padding his numbers at this point. If that is his priority, platooning was probably his best option. You might be right. At this point in his career how can he reasonably expect to be a full time DH knowing guys like Bonds and Piazza are unemployed ? You can't rock the boat without expecting a plunge into the water. As much as I loved Frank's career with the Sox his mouth has always been his worst enemy.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 20, 2008 -> 09:43 AM) The Jays, John Gibbons, and JP Ricchardi have been up to this sort of bs for a few years now. Ricchardi has gone to the media about several players, including AJ Burnett, basically saying he needs to pitch through pain. Frank doesn't feel he is entitled to it because he is Frank. He feels he is entitled to it because he has held up his end up the deal. He's been healthy, he's produced, and that is what the contract is structured under- those assumptions- that if he was healthy and producing, the option would be in the interests of both parties. And now that he has started slowly, the Jays aren't sure they want to pay him next year under the terms of that option, so they bench him. Why the hell do you think they told him the benching might be "indefinite"? Who the hell tells a player he may be benched "indefinitely"? They knew how he would react- how any player of his stature and accomplishments would react- and used that as an excuse to then release him. I respect your opinions in this forum. You are well informed and always make sense. I don't think Blue Jay mgmt. would want to see an $8 million dollar investment leave after 3 weeks of a season. You make it seem as though they huddled up and said let's piss off Frank by telling him he's benched "indefinitely", which could be anywhere from a day to the whole year , and then release him and blow $8 mill. this year but save $10 mill. on next year. I don't buy into any conspiracy theory. How could they even give an $8 mill. contract to someone and just expect 304 plate appearances ? That's a lot to pay for a base clogging part time DH.

QUOTE (max power @ Apr 20, 2008 -> 09:32 AM) You are. 320 at bats and he gets 18 million. 8 this year, 10 next year. I should have read the article 1st which I did now. Still can he honestly think he's going to get even close to $10 mill. next year acting this way ? 304 plate appearances ( according to the article) isn't very much. At this point in his career he has got to understand when you sign a contract like that you can be benched for not producing. The Blue Jays run the team not Frank. It seems the best thing to do would have been to accept the benching gracefully knowing that when the weather warms up and your old oft-injured body feels better you will get plenty of AB's.

And the devil will drag you under By the sharp lapel of your checkered coat, Sit down, sit down, sit down, sit down, Sit down you're rockin' the boat. Just staying with the Guys and Dolls theme from the game thread. Nice win .
