QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Mar 19, 2009 -> 06:15 AM) My goal: Skate faster than any other defenseman in the league. FAIL. Even when you start off a stride and a half ahead on the GW goal. I've seen a lot of bad things by Campell however on that goal he was gassed , at the end of a shift. Seeing Vermette do so much is pissing me off too. -

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Mar 20, 2009 -> 01:42 PM) I got to see him at Round Rock, Houston's AAA affliate, and he was, by far, the best player on that team. Then again, that team wasn't very good. But the fans treated him the way they treated Chris Burke, who's a 9.5 on the Grindy Scale. TTFWIW How good of a fielder is Josh Anderson? I hear he's right up there with BA as a fielder . -

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Mar 20, 2009 -> 10:47 AM) Someone on here kept suggesting Gregor Blanco before, but I thought that to be pretty unlikely. I just checked the Braves site though, and Schaffer is killing the ball in ST. Of course it's just ST, but Schaffer is legitimately in the CF mix there and could get the starting job. I don't know how wise it would be for the Braves to trade a player like Blanco and count on a rookie, especially when you've got Francouer and Garrett Anderson/Matt Diaz around him, but if there's any chance I'd love that. But, I still think that would be unlikely because it's not out of the realm of possibility that Garrett Anderson gets hurt, Schaffer struggles as a rookie, and Francouer continues to play like a bust. With Gorkys and Heyward far away, and with Brandon Jones being a sucky player, they'd risk trading all their depth. Plus Blanco wouldn't come cheap at all if he even were to be put on the block. There's not a whole lot out there and I'd rather stick with Anderson if we're not going to come up with a real solution. The lead-off issue is going to be a much bigger problem to figure out in ST than it will be during the regular season, because if whoever is in that spot is not hitting when it matters, the Sox will put somebody else in that role regardless of that player's best spot in the order. The Sox would probably rather call up The Pussy Slayer and throw him in CF than let Jerry Oh No!wens hit .150 for a month at the top of the lineup. My guess would be Getz getting the nod though. Ahh but you forgot about a guy who might be better than Blanco with the Braves and its not Schafer. It's Josh Anderson who is out of options. He was drafted in the 4th round of the 2003 draft. BA was a 1st rounder in the same draft. He has a .344 OBP in almost 3000 minor MiL AB. BA had a .364 OBP in 1136 MiL AB. Josh A. in 2 abbreviated seasons with Houston and Atlanta has a .315 BA and a .364 OBP with 14 XBH in 203 AB. In the last 4 seasons in the minors Josh A. has 175 SB averaging near 44 a yr. I read he's a better fielder than Blanco and over all is considered a good fielder. Don't know if he's available but he's fast, can field and can hit which makes him better than Wise, Owens, and Blanco (another slap hitter , not the best fielder type). He's basically the same height , weight and age as BA except faster , bats LH and slightly less power. He might be slated to be the starting CF with the Braves but Blanco got the majority of the PT last year and Schafer is very close to being ready. Would be cool seeing the Sox with Josh and Brian Anderson. -

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 20, 2009 -> 09:36 AM) Saw that artcile this morning, kind of irritates me. Headline says Anderson and Fields under consideration for leadoff, right? Yet, look at the actual quotes. Guillen has said that Getz is, but has NOT said Fields or Anderson. Looks like those two names are conjecture on the writer's part. The same thing in the Sun-times http://www.suntimes.com/sports/deluca/1486...eluca20.article Said it was discussed in a meeting. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 19, 2009 -> 01:19 PM) Also wanted to throw in here that someone in today's game thread hear Ozzie mention that Getz is now being considered for the leadoff spot. That would be moi and its right here. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...,0,323351.story Under leadoff woes in the paragraph starting with the words Jerry Owens..

Fastball right down the pipe doesnt look promising .

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 19, 2009 -> 01:07 PM) Maybe he should try it in a game. Not that it really means anything. But get him prepared. Owens and Wise are not good, even if they hit .800 the rest of the spring. The only other problem with Getz as a leadoff hitter is what to do with Beckham when he's ready in a couple of months. Maybe moving Ramirez to CF would be the answer. I first I saw anything about him considering it is in the online trib in the article about Vicedo being sent down. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...,0,323351.story

Ozzie already said he's now considering Getz for leadoff.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 01:09 PM) I heard from a pretty good source that when today's lineups were posted and Chris Getz saw his name in the 2 hole he immediately vomited all over himself and collapsed into the fetal position. Word is he's supposed to miss about a week with an ulcer. I did that too in empathy for him since leadoff and #2 are so pressure filled. -

QUOTE (Cowch @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 12:46 PM) Kendrick is sure having a nice spring. I am going to watch, but ignore Lillibridge's ABs. I cannot stand watching him bat. I wish Lillibridge would choke up on the bat and just try to make contact. When you're a middle infielder with little power K'ing as much as he does is just not acceptable. -
QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 12:27 PM) I'll take a shot at the 15 cuts to come: Colon and Nix on the DL. P: Broadway, MacDougal, Marquez, Russell, Wassermann, Williams C: Lucy, Stewart IF: Beckham, Broussard, Torres OF: Kroeger, Owens This means the bullpen will be Poreda, Thornton, Egbert, Carrasco, Dotel, Linebrink, Jenks Richard will be the 5th starter. That's not bad (assuming the Sox don't make any trades) though I still have a hard time thinking Poreda will be in the pen.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 11:30 AM) Yup Jenks Line Thornton Dotel Richard Carrasco Marquez/Wass I think the Carrasco, Marquez/Wass spots are completely up for grabs with Egbert being the current leader. If Colon isn't ready to start the season Richard is still the favorite for 5th starter which leave room for another lefty in the pen.

QUOTE (Cubano @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 11:52 AM) I am mourning. Don't be too sad. Viciedo opened a lot of eyes with his power and agility at 3rd base. He's still well ahead of the curve just having turned 20 and in AAA. Now you have to keep tabs on him through the Future Sox section and the Charlotte Knights website and you can listen to their games for free. http://www.charlotteknights.com/

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 10:46 AM) Full list from Sox website press releases : * Optioned C Cole Armstrong, RHP Jon Link and 3B Dayan Viciedo to Class AAA Charlotte; * Optioned INF Brandon Allen, RHP Jhonny Nunez and RHP Clevelan Santeliz to Class AA Birmingham; * RHP Ryan Braun, INF Javier Castillo, C Tyler Flowers, RHP Franklyn German, OF Michael Restovich and RHP John Van Benschoten were reassigned to minor-league camp. I wasn't too far off in my predictions from yesterdays game thread: I'll guess around 10 get cut: Von Benschoten, Link,Flowers, German, Santeliz, Torres, Restovich, Broussard, Castillo. Ryan Braun if he's there . Missed on Viciedo, Nunez, Allen,Armstrong,Broussard, Torres. Thought they would keep Vicedo and Allen around longer since they have so much power potential. Torres probably got a reprieve after Nix got hurt and he had that late inning 2 run triple yesterday. Still need a backup SS and the Sox won't keep Beckham around as a backup. Sox trimmed the logjam at catcher more than I thought they would. Thought the Sox might let Broussard go early to let him try to catch on with another team since they seem to have plenty of 1st base/DH types in the minors.

WhiteSox - All Time Home Grown vs. Acquired Teams
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to scenario's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Sully Baseball @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 10:50 AM) Joe Horlen was right up there... and some of that was emotional for me. Obviously Ed Walsh and Ted Lyons are in the homegrown rotation. Not including them would be laughable. Jack McDowell and Alex Fernandez I felt should be on there. Now I included Britt Burns in the rotation because I felt he was a good pitcher and I always admired how he pitched his a-- off in the last game against the Orioles and if the White Sox scored a single run, he'd be the guy credited of saving the pennant for the White Sox. Not his fault. (Also I snuck some into the bullpen) Now if you think that I should omit Burns or omit Salome Barojas from the bullpen and stick Joe Horlen onto the roster... that would be fair. I might do that. I make corrections and changes here and there... I might do that. I need to finish the Cubs post first. They should be a fun lot to deal with (rolling eyes) I've lived through the years of many on your list including Allen, Wood, Aparicio even Wilhelm. Joel Horlen and Ken Berry were my favorite Sox back when I was a kid. -

QUOTE (Sully Baseball @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 10:49 AM) Thanks for reading my post. Glad to see so many White Sox fans clicking on it. And I have to say I've written 25 of these so far and have found that White Sox fans have been very cool and not leaving "He's a Retard" posts on the blog. Let me address a few things: I've never read this article. I put the team together based on BaseballReference.com (the single greatest website in the history of mankind) and weighing heavily the 2005 team along with the 1917, 1959, 1983 and 1993 teams. I always lean heavily towards post season success. That's why I had to put Doc White in there (he's a White Sox pitcher who beat the Cubs to win a World Series... you people should be naming your children after him!!!) Contreras beating my Red Sox and clinching the first pennant since Eisenhower was in office was what gave him a spot for me. But trust me, I understand wanting Freddie Garcia (or Jon Garland for that matter) on the roster. It's a challenge writing these bad boys and there will inevitably be a person or two who gets left off. As for Albert Belle... yes he was great those two years in Chicago... but they weren't the greatest years for the Sox. I know, not his fault, but as a fan of the White Sox, wouldn't you rather show your love to Jermaine Dye, Scott Podsednik, Ron Kittle, Paul Kornerko and Minnie Minoso? For Jim Thome... BELIEVE ME that was a tough call for me. Basically it boiled down to Dick Allen or Jim Thome. Thome is a great player. There is NO WAY on Heaven, Hell or Earth I am leaving Dick Allen off of this list. Roberto Hernandez was REALLY hard to leave off. But I know I needed Jenks. Hoyt Wilhem needed to be on. Wilbur Wood needed to be on. And it would be wrong to not honor Doc White. (See above) So it boiled down to Keith Foulke, Roberto Hernandez or Jerry Staley. And as I said in the post, I wrestled with it and I gave the slot to Staley based on his role with the 1959 champs. I loved the article. I left you the comment about Johnny Mostil. I was just pointing out that for those interested there are simliar things on the web. Didn't mean to imply there was plagiarism involved. That was not my intention. Great job Sully. Edit. Mostil was a distant cousin according to my old man. -
Every Year I Plan on Following Spring Training ... but

QUOTE (Cali @ Mar 18, 2009 -> 12:38 AM) ^ I agree with that line-up. Also, I dont care how well Richard is doing this ST, he is NOT a big league starter. He proved it last season, he'll get through 4 or 5 innings then blow-up. Every line-up adjusted after one AB. He's suited for long-relief out of the pen and that's it. Marquez > Richard. Hopefully Contreras can take that 4th spot quickly and Marquez can be #5 until Colon is ready/goes on the DL You do know that almost every starter in the history of baseball has gone through some period of adjustment and just doesn't go from the minors to the majors and have instant success don't you ? It will happen to Marquez just as it happened to Richard just as it happened to Greg Maddux and Sandy Koufax. -
