TA likes ominous tweet: The trade Anderson thread

While Swanson had the 2 best years of his career defensively in 21 and 22 , Tim is not and has never been a below average defender. He may not be the best fundamentally but his range has always made him a plus defender. You can see it quite clearly on his fangraphs page all the way to the right in the dashboard stats where it has offensive and defensive ratings and then total fWar. -
Sox sign Victor Reyes MiLB deal, ST invite
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to bmags's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Oh I was indicting it since it was reported they were "negotiating" with him. He's a nothing OF, not fast, no power, no upside, doesn't get good jumps, shouldn't play CF at all. He does have a good arm. He's fine for playing all year in AAA but the minute he see's 26 time he's a liability. -

Just a friendly who's right and who's wrong bet? I'll take that. Not good enough defensively to be a 4th OF but that might be your point. -
And I'm certainly not saying he will be a superstar. He K's a lot but also has a good feel for the strike zone and will take walks I'd be happy with 2 fWar apiece from Colas and Outman and even if its less than that we'll still get good defense that will include a decent amount of OF assists, something that the OF last year was incapable of doing . But there's also a shot (not sure how much ,20-25% maybe, that they will do even better offensively. The OF defense was just disgustingly bad last year and creating better OF defense should be a BIG goal this year. It would make our pitchers look a lot better. Nothing pisses pitchers off more than shoddy defense.

I have mentioned Roberts defense in 2022 and his injury that more than likely caused it but there was also his dizzy spells. No idea how long that was actually going on which could have further impaired his defense. I also specifically mentioned that he may be better off in LF. But I haven't ruled out that his defense can be much better than last year in CF if surrounded by much better defenders. This is why I have continuously brought up James Outman who is 60 across the board as a defender according to scouting reports (run, arm, field) is LH and destroyed AA and AAA pitching last year. I know others would prefer someone more established but I truly believe he can give you just as much as Bellinger would without the price tag. Might have to wait to see how the Dodgers address their own OF woes but if he's made available he's worth an inquiry. I think he's under ranked because he was a 7th rd pick , 13th among Dodgers prospects and doesn't have much value in trade simulators all due to being a late bloomer. The Dodgers have developed him much like Will Smith who also credits how the Dodgers told him he had to hit for more power to play in the big leagues and gave him a leg kick. They have worked with Outman to take a very athletic guy who didn't have much of a college career and reworked his swing with tremendous results. He is solidly built, almost Trout like, 6'3" 215.

They will have a parade of office personnel around the ballpark so Hahn can say I promised you a parade , here it is !
-
ARe you throwing their stats in a blender ? I'm confused. ABreu won MVP in 2020, Keuchels good year was 2020. Grandals was 2021 since not enough time in 202 for 4-5 WAR Rodon was 2021 . Cease has stepped up to replace the 2021 Rodon year. Kopech or Clevinger or both can replace anything Cease did before he became really good. Lynn can be better than he was in 2022. Giolito can replicate however good he was . Moncada can be a 4 WAR Moncada that he was in 2021. Eloy has never had a 3 WAR year . You don't think that's possible at DH ? Luis Robert had a 3.3 WAR in 68 games in 2021. You don't think he can have 5 or 6 playing a full season ?
-
That was my point. Seems pretty impossible to think career or even just very good years out of 10 or 11 key guys on the Sox would result in a below .500 team.
-
But you also said his 1st base defense was "poor to bad" based on misusing defensive metrics because of the sample size. I'm not saying he's good or bad . I'm saying we just don't have enough data yet to know . But he's our 1st baseman so we'll find out.
-
SO how did they manage to have good years in 2020 and 2021 . Who are key contributors to those teams that we don't have now. Use the same metric their zips projections.
-
This is correct . 290 innings @1st base is the equivalent of 32 9 inning games and his sample is spread out over 2 years. This is misuse of defensive metrics . The worst thing to do when judging defense is use small samples spread out over time. You need a large sample size of continuous play to make an accurate statement and even 1 year may not be enough. It's the same mistake others here made when judging his OF defense after his 1st year and saying it was adequate. It may have been adequate in that sample but a larger sample would tell the true story and we found that out last year. He never had the speed or instincts to play OF permanently which is what I always told those people.
-
We're worse off than last year IF you think Robert, Eloy, Lynn,Moncada, Grandal ,Giolito, Kopech, Anderson, Vaughn, Bummer, Kelly all are injured as much or as bad as they were last year. Having Abreu when everyone else is terrible or hurt under a bad manager led to a .500 team. A new manager, health and guys playing up to their capabilities is what will help the team. Yes it sucks when you lose your best player and a model citizen but he wasn't supposed to be our best player in 2022. It was supposed to be Eloy, Robert or Moncada or all 3 of them. They drafted Vaughn to eventually replace Abreu or because he was the best player available and losing Abreu is just a consequence of that.
-
I honestly think Hahn got a pitcher because they needed one and that's all he's allowed to do because JR said no to much else . So I'm not upset because of HAHN's lack of participation in FA, I'm upset that he's not allowed to by JR. That would be my rationale if I had participated in that poll to be in the minority of voters. Hahn's just a puppet being controlled by the puppeteer . I can't be upset with an inanimate object.

I said this too. But I was merely speculating like a frustrated fan. -

It'll require a lot of good luck that's for sure and good baseball. 2 things the Sox have not had in abundance lately. -

There's no reason to add him to the 40 man roster now. He'll be added before he makes his MLB debut. There are open spots on the 40 but there's no hurry to add anyone to it now. We'll have to see how the off season shakes out. They just added the Rule 5 guy they picked up, Avila, and they added Bryan Ramos and Jose Rodriquez to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Ramos and Rodriquez had to be protected because of how long its been since they 1st signed with the Sox depending on their age when they signed. Colas didn't need protection. -

I never included Anderson in any of my trade proposals. I just figured Hendriks might be the only way to free up money. He isn't going to be among the best forever. He should be moved. I haven't advocating moving Gio or TA because I think there's a good chance some guys have significantly better seasons. If anyone has any better ideas about who you could get for Hendricks to help the team I'm listening. An aging top closer isn't a necessity on a .500 team who can't spend money. Fathom do you want to keep Hendriks and if you're open to moving him then find me someone to move him for. He would be needed on a team that has a vast amount of improvement from the dreadful seasons last year but how many of those kinds of improvements can we expect ? enough to make the playoffs ? That's always been the question . Hence the debate, wait it all out , see how they all do and if its enough to flip the script going forward and right the ship or commence selling off the rest of the pieces every time one of them has a good year. The Sox got nothing for Abreu, Rodon or Cueto. They can't keep receiving nothing for guys who will either fall off because of age or reach Free Agency after crap years like 2022. Getting nothing leads to the BS farm system along with how poorly they draft and develop and rather play internationally in Cuba and Venezuela than the DR. After Hendriks is Gio . He's the top wait and see how he does guy vs how the team does . Is it a good or bad thing if he does well and the team does well thus not selling him off. Or is it better that he does well and the Sox are not in contention so you can sell him off ? I know we all want the Sox to win but ownership isn't exactly making a concerted effort for that to happen. Since we know they have no intention of spending on this team it's kind of imperative they make trades. It's not the fans fault the Sox screwed everything up. We're just stuck as fans trying to figure out which direction to go and biting each others heads off. It would be nice to see Eloy and Robert have monster years without seeing Eloy in the OF more than a handful of games while at the same time seeing a couple of the rest of the comeback candidates also do very well. They have to find a way to make the OF defense good again somehow when its highly unlikely they spend on FA wish and prayer OFers. That just leaves young guys acquired in a trade or 2 . Signs are everywhere they're being ultra stingy. They can't even invest in OF depth when they resign Payton and apparently can't yet close a deal on Victor Reyes. -

Which thread was the one speculating on what Nimmo's salary would be? I'd like to see who came the closest. I'm doubting if anyone thought it would be $168M. -

Dodgers don't panic. They have a loaded farm system, a great front office, great scouting and development, have money to burn on FA's and a great team that's a little thin on closer ,SS and OF. I'm actually surprised they played Bellinger so much and gave so many ABs to Gallo also. Guess they were trying to find that old magic too but never happened . Outside of Betts, Trace Thompson was their best OF. They haven't even started spending yet and they freed up a little over $100M from their payroll. -
Liam Hendriks coming up in trade discussions
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I can't accept that plan because you literally just told me iF Eloy hit 40 bombs , Robert had a 30/30 year, Kopech and Lynn pitched 150 innings and gives you a 3. 00 ERA Cease stays the same. Giolito gives you 180 IP 3.50 ERA 4-5 WAR ANderson gives you 4.5 to 5.0 War, Colas gives you 3 WAR Vaughn gives you 2.5 WAR Moncada gives you 4 War Clevinger gives you 3 WAR You improve the defense in the OF, improve team speed and you fill in the pen with money saved from trading hendricks and its not a total disaster, That the team wouldn't win the division or beat out Cleveland . You should go to the Cleveland board and tell them how bad we are and how good they are. -
Despite you always giving me the TLR emojis and Sacamano just giving me grief in general. It's not very far from my thinking. I'm just not in favor of adding the extra expensive valueless pieces and my way is actually getting a jump start on the rebuild should the likely outcome of not making the playoffs occur in 2023. I'm just much more optimistic adding young players than adding expensive lottery tickets. I rather have athleticism and speed in the OF rather than bum shoulders and guys under 50% in sprint speed who also have power and years to develop even if they don't contribute right away. I mean if the end result is going to be a rebuild wouldn't you rather have Outman now than Gallo ? I can't say which one may help the Sox more in 2023 but I know which one will cost a lot less and be around for a lot more years. TLR me baby.
-
True but there are other options but no one wants to hear those either. They'd rather take their chances with expensive physical wrecks than trade for youngsters because some youngsters means "OH no we're rebuilding" when it could also mean an infusion of speed, energy power that you just might produce immediate or future results. We just saw Cleveland wipe the floor with us with that kind of team and we see TB compete every year despite having guys who arent household names.

Lottery tickets do not cost $8-10M. He should be in Japan with Aquino. Gallo is a Hahn purchase . Hahn and Jerry appreciate your support. The level of excitement for a Gallo would be less than a 5 if there were those choices but the thread maker chose to factiously give you choices of 10 and 9 as a joke so you're not changing anyones mind but Gallo would be a joke to a team mired in mediocrity and even a bigger joke to a team supposed to be having parades.
