The Grandal-Zavala-McGuire Conundrum
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to ron883's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I probably agree with this one more than any other and the phantom IL comment although Grandal appears to be the most likely to continue his phantom performance. Grandal has had knee, hammy and back issues so his reappearance may be longer than we realize (or shorter who the fudge knows). You can't discount Seby SSS because it came at a time when the Sox really needed it just as you can't discount the contributions of Burger and (finally) Harrison and Sheets. Abreu has become Abreu again with less power. Robert is fine with (surprise) less power. Vaughn's been great and TA is being TA . Pollocks been streaky, Eloy's been Eloy (MIA). Yoan's defense is good and he seems healthier now so maybe the bat can catch up. Without actually saying it Pollock might be that RHH OF who has to go since he never should've been here in the 1st place if Hahn didn't have his head up his ass all off season. Play Seby and sooner or later he will cool off and everyone can claim he is who we thought he was. Grandal hasn't really been missed all that much. Right now he's Keuchel but injured. A lot of our pitchers like pitching to Seby and McGuire. I'll take that and the hitters will just have to make up for the loss of the Grandal who used to be able to hit but is now a phantom. -
Estimated return date 7/10 according to RotoWire along with this: General manager Rick Hahn expanded upon Bummer's injury Monday (not sure which Monday that was) noting that the issue was in the tendon connecting the shoulder and lat. Bummer continues to progress, but the team is playing his return cautiously to ensure the area is fully healed.

Maybe he'll get a rehab assignment soon ? Do you think he'll return without a rehab assignment ?

Might as well split time at DH and LF with Vaughn and Eloy to give Vaughn's legs time off . Then split time between Engel and Sheets in RF.

Sox trying to get Moncada more aggressive
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Dr. Oz is always opening his mouth without thinking. Giolito , Covid ,came back instantly sucked. Robert before Covid was leading the Sox with 7 HR's in 33 games. After Covid in 29 games 2 HR's. His BA has stayed about the same but his slugging and OPS has dropped a little bit. A month+ long tear like he had starting in August after his return from injury last year would be very helpful. Vaughn, not an OF . His legs can't handle it. Needs his legs for hitting . -
Sox trying to get Moncada more aggressive

Right. No matter how you slice it he got it wrong If you count the number of AB's with the Sox starting with the June 13 game he's 11 for 36 or .306 If you count it from June 14 it's 10 for 32 or .313. Whoever Jake is, he has trouble with math. The 5 for 6 game was June 15. He had 1 AB on the 17th and went 0-1 before being IL'd. SO if we want to play his game accurately Yoan is hitting .182 since June 17th but has only played 5 games since his return from the IL on June 28 . 4 for 21 or .190. -
I'm getting ready to admit you were right if Eloy comes up today. However if you had mentioned Charlotte is about to go on a road trip to Gwinnett I would've probably agreed with you earlier. So today it's either Chicago or Gwinnett.

Oscar Colas Story (Is this true?)
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Look at Ray Ray Run's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It's not a terrible idea. That's why the Sox were slow on the bandwagon of drafting middle infielders. They can be moved to a lot of other positions because of their athleticism. Too early for it now of course. Let him keep hitting and developing as a SS . Oh and btw TA was suggested at catcher not CF by greg775 a few years ago. Your suggestion isn't even as close to that bad. Plenty of middle infielders can convert to the OF while mid. inf. to catcher is quite a stretch. So while it isn't a stretch to suggest he can play OF , it is quite the stretch to suggest he do it this year and especially in MLB when it's possible the Sox don't even move him to AA for another couple months. He'll be playing SS for a while. But you never know how things might turn out. -
I agree. Seby has been a godsend to the Sox. While it's totally possible he may turn back into a pumpkin it's better right now to ride his bat. Perez is a good prospect but Seby has more MLB experience. In his 16 games so far he's been worth .6 fWar and 135 wRC+. Hard to imagine Perez coming up and doing better than that. At this point it's hard to even imagine Grandal ,once activated ,doing better than that. Zavala is out of options too so if the Sox send him down when Grandal returns he can refuse and be available to any team according to James Fox.

They both reached AA and AAA by age 24. Seby missed his age 26 season in 2020 and Perez his age 23 season. Seby's been jumping up and down between Charlotte and the Sox since 2019 his age 25 season . Perez will get his shot, maybe one of them gets traded. Wouldn't be such a bad idea to sell high on Zavala .

The big boys need to show up. When 3 of your 4 best hitters in the last 2 weeks are Zavala, Sheets and Harrison guys like Vaughn, Robert, Tim,Pollock and Moncada need to step it up. Those other 3 guys and Abreu need the help. Who knows maybe we see Eloy here today too. In his last 113 PA Robert has walked 2 times for a measly 1.8 % walk rate. On the year it's 2.9% , the same as Leury Garcia.

Just looking at Seby 's development. It seemed like he was slow at some levels to figure it out but he always seemed to. Missing 2020 set him back so figuring out AAA took longer than usual while getting some time in the bigs too. Maybe he figured out AAA and MLB simultaneously. Hard to argue against his Knights and Sox stats combined this year. One thing about Seby is that he's always been a pretty consistent power hitter like doubles and HR's. The lineup could use those extra base hits . Full Zunino his batting average would be .100 less than it is now. Seby seems like a pretty smart hitter , he can go opposite field too. I just think he zone hits to pull and goes opposite when he has to. Actually my favorite kind of power hitter. Can turn and burn but adjusts on outside pitches. Perez in game power didn't show up till last year while Seby's power has always been there.
