One Obvious Move Completed - Analytics Overhauled
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Texsox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don't see why Thorpe is the object of such derision not only from you but others . He had 5 straight starts as a 23yr old rookie of at least 6 innings while giving up 3 hits or less and 2 runs or less. I think that was something that no rookie had ever done before in the history of the franchise. I guess it depends on your perspective how impressive that is. I mean I see a guy who despite his youth and relative inexperience pitching against the best hitters in the world and doing better than any rookie in the history of a 125+ year old franchise in those 5 consecutive starts as a very good thing. After all the bulk of his experience the year before was in A+ ball. But maybe that's just me who truly believes that prospect talk nonsense about development not being linear so he could also have periods that weren't so good especially when those not so good results ended with a forearm flexor strain and bone spur elbow surgery. But maybe you don't like the prevailing opinions that because he lacks "stuff" that his command has to be perfect for him to succeed . I guess it's a fundamental difference on how you view prospects and development and being a pitcher vs a guy with a 95+ MPH fastball and pinpoint command needed to keep hitters honest and off your outstanding changeup. Maybe you might also feel it was more of the league figuring him out rather than injury or the variance in performance inexperienced pitchers tend to have. I suppose it's reasonable to have doubts about such things just as it is for me to see hopeful things. -

Seems like a very comprehensive list of knowledge required including , knowing Spanish and moving for some $15 /hr and housing stipend job. How the hell does one go to college and understand everything listed and still be young enough to be able to work a temp job while upheaving your entire life plus part of the job application process is giving them free advice to show you know your stuff ? It doesn't even mention job benefits like healthcare. Is this really how you get quality people in R & D /Not Analytics ? -

Ex- Sox cost Yanks Game 1. Cousins can't get enough guys out. Boone elects to bring in Cortez who hadn't pitched in a month rather than brining in ex Sox Tim Hill. Got 1 out on the catch in the stands that advanced theruners to 2nd and 3rd because he made the throw from the stands ( out of play). Intentional walk to Betts to load the bases and BAM ! Freemn crushes 1st pitch no douter. Took me back to 88, Gibson walkoff watching the game while visiting Chicago at a friend's house. Also in game 1 and a walk off Dodger winner. -
I know I saw that. But apparently seeing him and not seeing anyone else gives him a leg up.

You pretty much thought for sure it was going to be Schumaker.

Well you're going to have to wait on something. You can trade Crochet if the market is good but there's no indication it will be when the Sox are viewed as cheap crack whores willing to accept any offer . There's also how teams are viewing their own position player prospects as gold like we saw during the TDL. There seems to be very hard-line stance against treating bottom feeders like the Sox with any respect. If he's 100% traded no matterw hat then you might as well also see if there's a market for Davis Martin or at least make sure he's at the top of the rotation and see if he can establish more value by the TDL or later since you're going to need more time on the hitting prospects we do have to figure out where the biggest need is. The Sox can't afford to just keep getting AA and AAA catching and pitching prospects and A ball prospects at all the other positions.
-
I don't know how unpopular it'll be.No one can say with any certainty how any manager will hurt or help. They still need players . If it's a 1st timer we'll hear the normal stuff about JR being cheap so a 1st timer would be the only one to accept the salary offer. A new manager will be in place during the 1st week of November if not earlier.

Sox Machine aka James Fegan's info is much more in tune and up to date than Heyman. I'm not even sure I've seen Dodger's bench coach Danny Lehmann listed among candidates here in Soxtalk but Fegan says he's a candidate.
-
That's the easy answer but if you're talking about trading vs. attempting to extend him he's still pretty young. One high quality starting pitcher gets you closer to competitive quicker especially when starting pitching and any prospects converted to RP might be your only strength.
-
Maybe you can remind me when a competitive window is starting and define "competitive" to me please. It's easy to say things when what you say can't be defined but only guessed .

They don't have to wait but I think they will. I wonder if Getz is avoiding using terms like analytics much like he avoided using rebuild. JR might still be allergic to those words. Maybe he's running covert ops . After all he did hire the ex Navy Seal who seems to be an important cog in the reinvention of the Sox wheel. Things are moving forward. https://www.sportsmockery.com/chicago-white-sox/white-sox-launch-front-office-overhaul-as-getz-looks-to-correct-years-of-missteps/ -
How the Sox went from 12th in fWAR/talent to last
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Even worse, sadly ,it's stanning for JR. -
If the Sox wait until after the World Series to make the announcment ,it'll be McCullough. Getz has been around the Dodgers way of doing things every spring training in Glendale. He's very high up on the list.
-
Now you get it. Were you actually so naive before this or just pretending to be righteously indignant ? If JR actually fired Getz it'll be for one reason, he's not doing what JR wants. Getz might actually think he can get the Sox out of the Stoneage and make massive firings and hirings in domestic and international scouting and development and analytics and be blocked by JR every step of the way and we would never know. Getz could be trying to juggle what little budget he's allowed and not put it into the team which might lead to terrible records while putting the money into infrastructure in a a way no other Sox GM has before. While Getz may not be qualified or may have been hired to be a stooge , rest assured if he's fired by JR it's because he's doing fundamental things that JR has never believed in doing. But you'll be happy because the GM who gave you the record breaking bad season is gone and the next guy may just say hey JRs got other things to do more important than the Sox so we're going to suck for a while . Please buy season tickets. Thank you for your patience. I'll do my best to turn the garbage I'm allowed to spend on into gold . Hey JR can't live forever right ? Shh don't tell anyone I said that !

Watching he CHSn feed here in Cali. Start of 2nd. 1-1. Will be surprised if Hawks can beat the Flames. Foligno tipped in a Seth Jones shot. -
Well having the worst season seems to have empowered you to feel right about many things. But you never sway very far from the majority opinion which always guarantees more people will think you're right than wrong. You play it pretty safe. That 121 loss team indicts mostly those who have had the most power in creating it over time. That's a very high percentage on JR. Getz has barely started. There's time to blame him down the line even though not recognizing the puppet from the puppet master seems to be willful blindness to ensure you win whatever office you seem to be running for on Soxtalk.
-
Actually it was the Sox who turned him around when he finally decided to trust his coaches. The problem was it was only his last 5 appearance with the Sox which was roughly only a week and a half before the TDL .
-
I commend that you'll wait to see how all parties involved turn out but from the very start that trade looked lopsided. Fedde had proven the changes he made in Korea were legit .He has a solid big strong body, and ptched extremely well for the Sox and had the extra year of control. Vargas was on a downward spiral with the Dodgers .He could put up great AAA numbers but he had no position to play and had yet to figure out MLB pitching. Fedde may very well be a 5 WAR starting pitcher for the Cards next year. All he has to do is have a 2025 as good ashis 2024. At the time of the trade he was more valuale to the Cards than Tommy Edman was who hadn't played all year. No one's pretending Kopech is a Cy Young finalist but as far as I know the Dodgers did nothing to fix him unless someone can find something specific that I couldn't. The fact is in his last 5 appearances with the Sox he pitched 5.2 innings 0 R, 1 hit 1BB and 8K after he finally started to trust his coaches. He just continued doing with the Dodgers what he had with the Sox . 24 G, 24 IP, 9 H ,3 ER, 29 K, 10 BB 1.13 ERA , 4-0 Record, 6 Saves , .792 WHIP and thats with a walk rate of 3.8 per 9 IP which is still a bit too high. But over his last 29.2 innings he may have been the most valuable RP in baseball. It's not like he had lost his stuff but he had lost his way. He was stuck between the pitcher he wanted to be and the pitcher he could be and it took him a while to trust a lesser vision of himself in his mind and accept his new role as a RP and how best to approach that role. The Dodgers were 19 -5 in games that Kopech pitched. Someone of the 3 guys the Sox got has to become a productive MLB player. It would be nice if it was Vargas but he couldn't have been any worse than he was with the Sox with a -1.0 bWAR in 42 games. Kopech gave the Dodgers 1.0 bWAR in his 24 games and and a dominant late innings presence. The trade from the very beginning felt 1decent prospect short or a better headliner short. We got something you might be able to squint at and eek out a MLB player somewhere down the road for productive MLB talent.

Rewarded ? Baseball created this mess with less than 2 handfuls of owners willing to bid on the top free agents and creating a system among the owners and players of the ultra rich and where ever everyone else falls after that. The Orioles finally did some good drafting and, development to get to the top but so far they lack a way to finish it off. The Astros decided to spend a bit and not only finished it off but cheated their way to the top and stayed there for quite a while. They weren't punished until after they won a World Series. Tampa Bay despite great effort to work far below the payrolls of just about every team and still succeed cannot reward their fans with a Word Series win so far or keep their good players . While spending great deals of money doesn't guarantee rings on a consistent basis it usually keeps you in the playoffs. All of a sudden after years of the worse teams getting top draft picks now MLB decides they were wrong all along and it was a bad thing for rebuilding teams to win once in a while. It only took a rebuild for the Sox to make the playoffs 2 years in a row for the 1st time in franchise history before they sunk lower than any other non expansion team in baseball history with years of losing ahead and they need the league to spank them as if their own foibles aren't bad enough or picking higher guarantees championships when we know it doesnt. Incompetence and stagnation is it's own punishment. For ove For over 125 years the Sox didn't need MLBs help to continue being losers. But sure pour salt into the gaping wound . Fucking sadists .
-
Highly doubt it. It was a stupid rule to begin with. The highest pick the Sox got during the rebuild was 3rd I think and that was Vaughn. Its not like their draft picks helped them at all like some of the Astros picks did. But the CBA didnt want teams celebrating mediocrity with hoardes of high picks as if picking talent was as easy as the football and basketball drafts. I understand creating more interest with a lottery but bad teams are punished enough with years and years of bad baseball without collectively bargaining in more embarassment. Can you imagine in any other sport where a team as bad as the Sox has a league rule preventing them from having a top 10 pick just because they are so bad multiple years in a row ? It's asinine. Imagine if there was some disaster like a plane crash and a team being punished like that. What's happened to the Sox franchise is kind of like that. It takes a lot of bad luck and bad ownership to trash a franchise so thoroughly after the first rebuild had to deal with multiple years of a worldwide disease and labor strife as if their incompetence needed any help to be worse than it already was.

Early pressure in the 3rd by Utah. Marasek keeping Hawks in it. Hawks clean face off win in Utah zone Vlasic slapper tipped in front by Foligno to make it 3-2. Bedard with hte secondary assist. Games got some pace to it now. Bedard tried a Michigan ,no luck. It's a game now.
