  1. I never played baseball at a high level but I ve followed the game forever at the MLB level. 1st pitch fastball for a strike to lefty on left to Colas from a pitcher who frequently throws curves low to the previously hitters. So I'm thinking lots of low curves coming now that he's ahead. I figure that's what Colas should be thinking too and look at the next pitch at least. He's at a disadvantage and has to see if he can get the count back in his favor. Low curve out of the strike zone swing and miss strike 2, then another curve in the dirt strike 3. How do they make it this far without knowing these things and you see it constantly. Sure you'll get out guessed pretty often but so many guys can't seem to think along with the pitcher. Too much swingitis.
  2. 2 actually if you count Clevinger.
  3. 20 % would be pretty good rate of scrap heap pitchers working out. Rodon was one .Well sort of. Sox refused to give him a QO and they got nothing for him. They abused the hell out of his arm as if they knew they weren't going to give him a QO way in advance. And pretty much half the board agreed with that decision with a 2022 contention window expected to still be open.
  4. You can't even establish what fair value is on those guys. If Robert keeps getting hurt his extension he got already will start looking like Moncada's did at the end. Crochet could accept a cheap extension for $30M for 3 years . That sure beats an 800K salary and being non tendered eventually if he blows out his arm.
  5. How exactly do you know it's Getz's decision to make on firing Grifol ? Maybe Reinsdorf just told him he didn't want to pay 2 managers at the same time. If Grifol gets fired before his contract runs out I'm guessing it won't be Getz decision but it will come out that Getz fired him.
  6. Hey I dig any response that agrees with me. Which thread ?
  7. Sometimes guys stink moving up a level until they adjust or they dont. Thorpe hasn't sucked, neither has Iriarte. Korey Lee's doing decent after he sucked late in the season last year. The kid they got for Grossman hasn't sucked. Shuster has done well. Everybody bagged on Jacob Gonzalez last year but he made some changes and has looked much better this year and got promoted to AA. Sosa always took time adjusting to a new level then figured it out as he climbed the ladder. Every team in baseball has players just like this. I'm no big believer in our farm system by a long shot but that's on Reinsdorf. I'll keep repeating that till my fingers are gnarled . They won't pay for 2 DSL teams like maybe 1/3 of teams do who actually think spending internationally in the D.R. Is worth the headaches. JR doesn't want to deal in the murky waters. Or maybe he just doesn't want to acquire the expensive best young talent. So they end up picking older Cubans and signing mostly Venezuelans. Eder sucked when he got traded into our systems but he was a gamble coming off arm surgery and probably was gassed but even when he was good he didn't have many innings under his belt. Most here loved that trade except for the Burger guys like me. But I'm not writing Eder off yet. The decision to turn Crochet into a SP has worked well so far. The hiring of Bannister and that decision alone is hardly mentioned when talking about a small change that's going pretty well right now. Ultimately who knows what happens. There's only so much a lot of these executives under JR can do given his involvement in all aspects of the organization especially when it comes to scouting and player development having limited resources be it quality or just quantity hires , software, latest tech. International spending , JR slashes money everywhere. Even if Getz is not qualified if you base it on how he did as player development chief how can anyone expect success from him given everything JR does to inhibit player development ? AJ Perrynski was a team Ambassador for the Sox and JR let him go for speaking out against the Getz hire. But AJs no dummy .He knows actual qualified execs cost more money and need more freedom to do as they please and won't worked under JR. I generally reserve my ire for JR. You can say whatever you want about Getz , Grifol , player development but to me it's a waste of space when the head honcho ,while not calling all the shots, is severely limiting the ammo.
  8. I know you're in your element bashing everything in your line of fire but all you did was mention 3 names. You didn't say anything about them. You then proceed to call it the worst off season you can remember. Well duh the whole off season was based on cutting payroll and picking up old trash and hoping it could be sold off for 6nyesrs of upside. Only Zavala was acquired in the only significant trade Getz made. The other 3 guys Thorpe and Iriarte and Wilson were doing pretty good. Everything else was potential for potential and probably minor potential if you want to be fair about it. Like how Mazara for Steele Walker turned out. Are you already writing off Zavala ? He's 19 and has 55 games at A+. The AA RP they got for Grossman has been good since they got him. I don't expect any miracles at the trade deadline do you ? Fedde may bring something worthy of attention . That's about it unless they move Crochet or Robert. Both seem unlikely to happen . Kopech, Pham ,DeJong , Brebbia ,Flexen , Hill anything we get is likely to be akin to the Grossman trade. 6 years worth of some maybes.
  9. They miss Wilson.Without him the late innings are really bad. Went on the IL May 22. Losing streak started the same day. BP was hot before he got hurt. Yes it was lesser competition but they were 11-8 right before he got injured. They don't have the BP depth.
  10. If Mendick had actually stretched like a 1st baseman does towards the ball (he didn't), they might've got Bellinger there.
  11. Isn't this what everyone wanted? Play the kids and give them extended time. Can't or I should say shouldn't whine after every AB. Give them a chance. Peralta makes a lot of hitters look bad.
  12. The 143 ( actually about 147) was 103 in college and another 44 in the minors in 2010. In 2011 it was 71 innings all in relief . Then it was 192 in his 1st year as a SP with the Sox .
  13. I wouldn't even venture a guess. Phantom DL stints don't exactly send a positive message out to other teams about his health. Who knows maybe if he's healthy he'll agree to being a 1-3 inning opener in the minors so the Sox can recover some of his time in exchange for a mutually beneficial extension . But that seems rather remote.
  14. The Sox are playing this by ear. There has been no defined plan. Crochet and the Sox are willing to see how it goes. Crochet has stated on a few occasions that he is fine pushing the envelop. He's grown up since he was drafted. He looks bigger and stronger. He's really taken to the starters role and pitching every 5th day. I don't think there's a chance in hell Crochet will want to pitch in relief for the rest of the season. He likes the schedule he's on now. Maybe we can all agree that it's very encouraging and ,quite frankly, somewhat amazing he has done so well and remainly healthy . I think Crochet has been treated a lot better than Rodon was in 2021 . The 1st half of 2021 when Rodon was dominant was the height of the rebuild. The 2nd half of 2021 when Rodon was wearing down and the Sox played .500 the rest of the way was the beginning of the end of the rebuild. I'd say the odds on Crochet getting traded are about 4:1. It's not very likely. However ,if he does get traded it'll be a good offer that Getz found too good to pass up. Crochet might've got hurt no matter what role he pitched while he was still growing into his body. This might be the new direction/ experiment on how to maintain arm health. I think we're seeing it now with Noah Schultz.Build the arm slowly ,monitor constantly. Baby them through physical maturity and see if they can avoid TJ surgery in their early 20s while building arm strength as they grow into their more adult mature body.
  15. Think it was the re signing of Clevinger.
  16. Does being lousy make them unlikable ? I think in many fans eyes the answer is yes. What did Leo Duricher used to say ? Nice guys finish last. In a way that's correct. You need an edge,a fierceness, a fire that burns within you because you want to win so badly. You want to overpower your opponent, break their will. You sort of have to be ,well , a jerk, at least during the game. But it's probably easier if you're always a jerk. Not sure changing the culture to a bunch of less talented choir boys is the answer. You need a ton of talent in every part of the organization and it ain't cheap and they are usually ruthless.
  17. Reisdorf completely destroyed his organization. His fingerprints are all over everything the Sox spend on hiring the most inexpensive and inexperienced personnel and cutting corners everywhere. He's reaped what he has sown. JR isn't suffering. He's a businessman running his business the way he wants it run. He strives on this.
  18. Hill K'd Henderson twice on pitches called balls that were in the zone one low away ( the whole ball easily in the zone) then up and away perfect pitch right on the corner and that was also called a ball. Then another great pitch Henderson looked at just off the plate low and away called a ball. Any or all of those pitches are called strike by another ump .
  19. At least Fedde might be in play for a trade to the O's.
