  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 29, 2012 -> 06:57 PM) Hello first place my old friend. Simon and Garfunkel added to your Styx and Queen moments.
  2. Great team effort today. Solid outing by Humber. Tank now at .280. Somebody give me his numbers since he was under .200 3 weeks ago. They gotta be incredible.
  3. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 29, 2012 -> 07:50 PM) The 2004 offense was pretty crazy until frank and maggs went down. I don't know why but this reminds me of that offense pre-injury. Any time the Sox have some big boppers I like it. Dick Allen years, Youngsters Gossage and Forster. Luzinski, Richie Zisk, Oscar Gamble. Big Hurt Albert Belle. Also when the young talent does well. Alex Fenandez, Jason Bere, Robin Ventura ,Carlos Lee, o wee ooo Magglio.
  4. QUOTE (TitoMB @ May 28, 2012 -> 01:03 PM) What are these said numbers? I'm curious. Coutesy of Southside Sox on May24th Here's the best way to put it: Counting Wednesday's stats, Konerko is batting .321 after falling behind 0-2. That is nuts. If you want some context, the AL is hitting .164 in such situations. Hell, the league is slugging .251 after an 0-2 count. Or, we can look at Josh Hamilton, who has Konerko beat in slugging and OPS, and is two points behind in batting average. When Hamilton falls behind 0-2, he's hitting .171 -- although his power is still well ahead of the curve with a .371 slugging percentage. But what is Konerko slugging after he falls behind 0-2? .714!
  5. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 28, 2012 -> 04:33 PM) If you look at that team right now, especially w/o Longoria and Jennings for the last three weeks, it is mindblowing that they are able to win at the clip they do. I realize their pitching is stellar..but the edge they get from being on the cutting edge of data makes a difference. If you have any knowledge of Moneyball you know how resistant the game can be to change. But as the old guard leaves and a more progressive thinkers take over change is coming faster.
  6. I know we all dig the long ball and pitchers with stuff and defense is the last thing fans like to discuss but this is what all you sabre guys have been waiting for.
  7. I have been very high on Viciedo for the last few years, yet didn't bother to post in the "Viciedo isn't worth the wait" thread because I couldn't add anything other than "damn give the kid a chance" . It's still too early to make any "I told you so" statements but the early results are encouraging for the players you mentioned.
  8. As we all enjoy the current state of the Sox, I'd like to bring up something I was reminded of playing the Rays and something I have never seen a separate thread on. According to this article MLB ( http://idevmail.americaneagle.com/message....9042&f=HTML ) is employing just about twice as many shifts as last year as more and more info comes into play on where to play different hitters. Sox are in the bottom 5 teams that do not shift as much. The Rays are the top shifting team.We are seeing a defensive revolution in baseball that the Sox aren't yet utilizing. How helpful do you think shifts are ? Should the Sox look into this more closely ?
  9. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 28, 2012 -> 02:53 PM) If the Royals or Angels win today WE'RE IN THE PLAYOFFS I didn't know the playoffs started tomorrow
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 28, 2012 -> 02:58 PM) I wish Sale would have struck out 25 so Kaplan could have told us how Kerry Wood fanning 20 was far more impressive. Very nice win. One big swing by Dunn and pitching only gave up 3 hits. Keep the train a rollin !
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 28, 2012 -> 02:25 PM) "Don't swing at anything on the outside half" isn't an option when pitchers are happy to throw everything to guys out there. Batters have to cover those pitches to be able to force the pitcher to go inside. Who are you quoting ? I never said the outside half . I said he was swinging at too many pitches off the plate . He wasn't covering those pitches he wasn't touching them . They just kept pitching him outside because he couldn't hit them and couldn't lay off them.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 28, 2012 -> 02:18 PM) If it takes him extra effort to get down on the outside pitch, then he's going to have to commit early on anything outside, and that's going to kill his pitch recognition. Laying off everything outside isn't an option, he'll just strike out looking. He was never this bad of a strikeout guy at any other point in his career, including last year. I was wondering for 3 weeks why. Then we saw him lining the outside pitch the other way for a game or two after he had that cortisone shot in his back, and it all made sense. I don't agree ,learn what you can hit and what you can't hit ,if you're aced on the outside corner so be it. Take some walks. You're more valuable on base then on the bench.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 28, 2012 -> 02:12 PM) If you listened to Hawk, he's described Morel as basically being unable to bend over without pain, leading to him just being totally unable to deal with anything on the outside edge of the plate. If he's wincing and unable to square up that pitch, then yeah, he's going to be overly defensive on anything outside, because he couldn't hit it hard with his back and was just forced to protect. So if you can't hit it why keep swinging at it? He just swung at way too many outside and off the plate and kept missing. You'd think at some point he'd lay off it thus my pitch recognition comment. Have to learn your strengths and weaknesses as a hitter even more so when you're hurting.
  14. QUOTE (Jake @ May 28, 2012 -> 02:05 PM) I don't understand why you're so adamant in defending such a low ceiling player. I think Brent could very well be an important part of our future, but I don't see where all this certainty is coming from I like Morel almost as much as Balta does. But even if he was injured all year I can't defend him . The stuff he was swinging and missing seemed to always be off the plate outside. His pitch recognition was terrible.
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ May 28, 2012 -> 01:17 PM) Very, very long swing by Alexei today. Time for Hudson's 7th triple of the season. That's because he keeps looking fastball and getting off speed.
  16. Most guys suck with an 0-2 count. Paulie's numbers at 0-2 are incredible.
