QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Sep 8, 2006 -> 06:08 PM) In a few years, we'll all think of Ozzie the same way we think of Ditka. No, we already agreed in the other thread that Ryan Sweeney is God.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 8, 2006 -> 01:28 AM) Sexy? Sometimes a thread looks like it's going down the crapper, and all of a sudden it's magically resurrected. I heart this thread.

QUOTE(3E8 @ Sep 7, 2006 -> 01:30 AM) This power v. speed dilemma bugs the hell out of me. When Anderson goes to winter ball neither of these tools should be a focus of his. He flat out just needs to work on being a better hitter. He's made solid improvements as the season has progressed, but he has issues with adjusting to offspeed pitches as well as his overall plate discipline. These are the main and most beneficial skills Brian could work on. He already is fairly decent in recognizing the fastball. Having him trying to become a better basestealer is just not worth the time/effort in my opinion and to have him focus on power-hitting could set him back offensively. ^^^^^^^^^^!!!!!!!!! On the other hand, you gotta say, these kids these days think they're entitled to everything. Why didn't BA just agree to play winter ball weeks ago? Then this whole controversy could have been avoided.

7 shutouts in 1 night. First time in 34 years.
jackie hayes replied to Steff's topic in The Diamond Club
Hs, first that, now look at tonight. Sanchez tosses a no-hitter, Hill and Lowe and everyone involved in the Colorado-SD game, scoreless until the bottom of 11. DAMN. Even more amazingly, Ryan Howard didn't homer. -
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Sep 7, 2006 -> 12:09 AM) I guess in replays he was indeed out by a half step but yeah looks like beat it. The 1b (Jacobs, I suppose) made a long stretch. He looked safe to me at first (and why would Ramirez take his sweet time with Byrnes going down the line anyway???), but after seeing the full speed replay -- I wasn't sure, but I thought it looked plausible that he was out. The Yahoo game summary announces that the Diamondbacks' "Top Batter" was Orlando Hudson, 0-4 with 1 k and a gidp. Great game, champ! And the final lesson is, if I long consider picking up someone on my fantasy team and decide not to do it, they will have an incredible, perhaps historic, game. Thank you Scott Olson, thank you Anibel Sanchez, thank you Cole Hamels. Rich Hill, almost, but that was just half-serious consideration. Next time.

QUOTE(AssHatSoxFan @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 02:49 PM) i have never been a big proponent of grabbing two kickers or tight ends when you can grab sleepers for the beginning of the year especially since there is usually decent guys available on bye weeks you can get with some underperforming guy later on Agree on this. With Westbrook already hurting, for example, an Eagles backup rb seems more useful than a guy like Wiggins. If the bye week comes and nothing's changed, you can drop him then for someone as good as Wiggins. But if Westbrook goes down, you could have something really useful. Or a Morency, in case Lundy falls flat. Go boom or bust instead of mediocre bye weekers. -

QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 12:00 AM) How many times have we seen Javy pitch a good game then next time out look like complete s***? Yes he did a good job and it was tough luck he didn't get the win. Lets see what he does his next start. A few times, but more often his bad starts have come in bunches. I understand what you're saying, but why would you say you won't "praise" Javy's work lately? For me, if it's a gift horse, great, if it's a sign of things to come, even better. But either way it's damn good. Go go go Javy!

QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ Sep 5, 2006 -> 11:13 PM) The best pitcher minus one inning left out that one inning tonight... if that makes sense. Nice to see him do good, but I would like him to do this more often. More realistically, eliminate that one bad inning. We will see, I'm sure as hell not going to praise him for one great outing. Why? We praise slumping hitters for coming through in big games. And it's already been pointed out the Javy been pitching well for a while, now. He's been good since August began. Not this good, but good.

STOA: Ozzie the Hypocrite and Much Much More

Call it STOAP. Get more listeners. You're welcome. -
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 5, 2006 -> 10:14 PM) I wasn't in the game thread, and I'm sure you all did kudos in there... but what a ballsy outing by Vazquez. VERY impressive. He did his 4-inning usual for 8 innings. Damn nice. Everyone knows he can do this. If he can hold up this level production (well, not this level, but you know), that would be an enormous boost.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 5, 2006 -> 10:04 PM) Who is Konerko going down on off the field? This thread only delivered half of what it promised. So, uh, in that case, I for one think this is one thread that is just fine without pics.

My sarcastic reaction to the end of the game: "Damn, now I won't get to see how Paulie manages to hit into a dp with 2 outs." My real reaction to this game: "Fish....someone." I don't know who to blame, I can't really blame anyone. I just want to. Paulie sucked eggs today, yeah, but this slide is not his fault. But what an all-around b****. What an awful game. Brutal. Edit: Game was a b****, not PK. Just to be clear.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Sep 5, 2006 -> 12:45 AM) YOU PEOPLE? WHAT IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN? (20 Sox fans appear out of nowhere) Aw, wite, why exaggerate? You're the only Sox fan who lives in nowhere. Really, are there even 20 people in both of the Dakotas, combined?

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Sep 4, 2006 -> 01:24 AM) Greg, Im not calling you a dumb fan. In no way am I calling you that. HOWEVER, with only seeing 20 so games this season, In my opinion, its hard to judge players on a fair basis. Watching basically every pitch this season, (missing a few games when I was on vacation) you can get a much better opinion of the team. Stats tell alot about the player, but I use my eyes first and formost, and its hard to judge players like Thornton and Mac when you dont see them everyday. Same goes for Anderson-Mackowiak situation. You dont see Macks D every day, nor Andersons. I don't think this is fair. The "stats" actually support the idea that Thornton and Macdougal have been excellent this year. greg admitted that he was judging them largely on single appearances. He also admitted that Mack is a "horrible" defender. He evaluated the 2 just fine, he just assigns blame differently. No amount of game-watching can help in judging that. In general, I don't like this sort of classification of fans who do/do not have enough knowledge to comment. greg obviously follows the team closely, he comments frequently enough to see that. The discussion should be substantive -- this sort of argument (I watch more, so... hierarchy) should play no role at all. Now, admittedly, I'm biased -- even though I disagree with greg pretty roundly, I listen to most games on the radio (internet feed). By the end of this year (regular season), I'll have probably watched (I'm guessing) only 30-40 Sox games, in person or on tv. If there's an argument about something that required sight (which I didn't see) -- did it hit a batter, was it a strike, etc -- I won't comment. But I haven't seen greg make any overreaching comments here. Okay, my piece. /out

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Sep 2, 2006 -> 03:09 PM) And I never said he was a plus defender. He is an avg. defender right now at the hot corner. He still makes some stupid mistakes but he also makes a lot of great plays at 3B too. And like I also said the only reason now for him to move to LF is because of Crede. When you have a relatively young 3B who is a plus defender and is hitting .300 with around 30 HR's and is still under your control for the next couple of seasons why replace him? You said "since he isnt a great 3B which would make even more since for him to move to LF". No mention of Crede or .300 or 30 hrs. My original quote said that he's a borderline 3b. Meaning, he can play it, but you can't be sure he'll hold it down for the long-term. Which agrees with much of what I read on the Future Sox board. You tell me that I obviously don't read anything, because he's definitely good. Or maybe he's not definitely good now, but he definitely will be, whatever that means. Now he's become "average". So I take it he's not "definitely a good 3B" now? In any case, I ask you to provide sources. Since it's clear that I've read absolutely nothing about him, of these many reports that you talk about, that seems like a pretty simple request. Still NOTHING. Find me these reports which say he will "definitely" be a good third baseman for many years. Please. My main point was that Peavy >>>> Crisp and Marte > Fields. Now, even though Fields' bat is catching up to Marte's production, Marte was considered an excellent defender at an important position. Fields is right now, in your words, "average" at that position, so I don't think he makes up the difference there. All I was saying was that, if the Pads think there's a good chance Fields will be edged out of third in a couple years by a better defender, that further compromises his value relative to Marte's. So after that it comes down the amount we'd have to throw in for Freddy. I never said he was incompetant, just that his long-term outlook might be at another position. I don't see any contradiction between that and what I read elsewhere, but I'm inviting you to provide the contradiction.

Who are you and what have you done with Albert Pujols? Another 0-fer game, making 5 such games in his last 7. In that span, he's hitting .154 (4/26) with 2 rbi and 4 runs. On the other hand, only 1 k.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Sep 2, 2006 -> 04:26 AM) My reference is reading the futuresox board something you should do more. When Fields was first drafted it was thought yes he would eventually move to the OF or DH. But if you paid attention to the futuresox board and the people there that watch the games and everything. You would know that his defense is leaps and bounds better than what it used to be. It has improved every season and no reason to think it wont keep improving considering the kind of athlete he is. And how do you have an impression on a player without ever watching him. I dont consider myself a scout or anything but i try to make it to a few minorleague games to see the players with my own 2 eyes and know what im talking about. Im not saying im a better baseball fan than you or I know more about it than you... but its fairly obvious you have never seen him play and that your just going by what was originally written up about him when first drafted. No, I wasn't, and no, it's not. What I've read this year -- not when he was drafted -- suggests that he's not bad now, as he had been in Birmingham, but nowhere have I read that he's turned into a plus defender. For example, when I said some reviews had been lukewarm, I was thinking of the Sickels interview. " I think he can stay at third base if they want him too. He has the range and arm for the position." Not panning him, but that sounds like "acceptable" to me. Not "excellent". But just to be sure, I went back and did a search on "fields" in the Future Sox board, and read everything back to mid-May. And I'm still missing the fulsome praise for his 3b play that you're referring to. So why don't you, in the spirit of educating us mouth breathers, please show me precisely which reviews you initially suggested I should read. I presume you're not referring to your statement from this year, "Also since he isnt a great 3B which would make even more since for him to move to LF." Wait, that seems to be the opposite of... Well, I'm sure you'll explain it.
-
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Sep 2, 2006 -> 02:37 AM) The only reason he is being considered to move to the OF is because we have Joe Crede. He isnt going to be an amazing 3B defensively but he is more than acceptable there and he has improved greatly at the hot corner. But thats fine you keep going on talking about him and telling us what his value is when you obviously dont know much about him. I don't think that's the only reason, since before this year it had been said widely that he was simply not good enough to play 3b in the majors, but since you're obviously a part of Sox management, why should I question you... You said I hadn't read anything. I told you my impression of what I have read and asked you to cite sources refuting that. Put up or shut up, 101.
-
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Sep 2, 2006 -> 02:18 AM) Jackie you havent read anything about Fields this season have you? He has improved greatly at the hot corner.... dont get me wrong he is no Joe Crede but he is definitely a good 3B or will be. Also I think we would pay a sizable of Garcia's contract and maybe throw an addin like Phillips. Uh...okay. I've read some lukewarm reviews, that he'll probably make an acceptable third baseman. Also that the Sox decided to give him some time in the of, which can't inspire confidence. Tell me where these glowing reviews are, that he's making spectacular progress, 101...

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 2, 2006 -> 01:35 AM) Haeger had an ERA over 5 since the first of July in AAA. He'd fit right in our rotation. In the sad but prolly true category. Knuckleballers will do that. You know how inconsistent they can be. Wakefield will sometimes be much worse than a 5 era over 2 months. The thing is, he's always bounced back. I'd prefer to wait some more on Haeger, see if he sustains it. But if he does, great. Say it translates into a 4.5 era in mlb. I'll take that over the chimera that Coop'll take any piece of garbage and make him a 3.8 era pitcher over 200 innings. We believe in Vazquez, some of us, anyway, because you can see that he has a great arm. Haeger showed that he can throw some great stuff -- why should we believe any less in that? QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Sep 2, 2006 -> 01:54 AM) SD has nothing going on at 3B. Im pretty sure they dont even have anything even close in the minors at 3B. Someone might be able to back me up about that. Fields IMO is a little more than "decent" when putting him in a trade. David Wells just got back a pretty solid prospect, by SD none the less. Freddy Garcia>David Wells, especially in the AL, in Petco. Freddy has value, especially if we pick up some of the bill. Peavy is a borderline ace having a down year, and I think he could be moved. He had a very solid Aug, so it's very possible he could follow it up with a good September. Im obviously just throwing it out there, but I think its something to look at. Fields is a borderline 3b, by some reports. The Pads will obviously look at that. I just don't know. The basic 3b prospect trade this past summer was (in its essentials) Coco Crisp for Andy Marte. Peavy is much more valuable than Crisp, Marte is more valuable than Fields, so I don't know why SD would take this -- unless, maybe, you pay for everything owed to Freddy. I just don't think it's workable.
