  1. QUOTE(CrimsonWeltall @ Aug 11, 2006 -> 12:10 PM) Caveman. Have you seen footage of astronauts? They're always moving so slowly. The Caveman would run circle around him while throwing spears and rocks. Winna!
  2. QUOTE(CWSOX45 @ Aug 11, 2006 -> 02:53 PM) Brian Anderson without a doubt, just because we have no back-up centerfielder. Cintron is okay at short.....I can't wait til Juanny is healthy though. ^^^^^ Taking nothing away from Juan, my impression is that the dropoff is so much greater in cf that I'd go with Brian. But I'm a fan of both, I'm not saying I would want Uribe out.
  3. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Aug 11, 2006 -> 01:50 PM) Today from Yahoo Sports: This sounds like more than a muscle strain. The first hint being the fact that they call it a ligament strain.
  4. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 9, 2006 -> 12:37 PM) Am I the only one having a problem opening any link related to this story? I can't even get on to the NY Posts's site. I can get to the Post's home page, and the story's front and center. Gotta agree, not all that impressed.
  5. Using once won't build strength or endurance. Are we sure it won't help someone recover faster? What I can find seems to suggest that this effect works by blocking a stress hormone. Why wouldn't that work immediately? At the end of the day, however edifying an explanation would be, he had synthetic testosterone in two consistent blood samples. It doesn't really matter why.
  6. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Aug 6, 2006 -> 03:19 AM) There are just way too many friggin variables to determine how good a player is defensively statistically. The tendency of a pitching staff(GB/FB/K) can swing stats, the size of the park can, the strength of the offenses and pitching staffs within said players division and even league, the quality of the defense of the LFer and RFer(hell even the 2Bman and SS)...you factor in all that, plus however much other stuff you can figure, and then maybe you can have a stat that helps indicate one way or another...and regardless of that, you still have to have eyes to see if your stats are backing you up or not. But all those variables are available, so you can use them in constructing your Index of Glove Outstandingness Taken Independent of Team (or IGOTIT). So that doesn't seem to be a big problem. Personally, I'm not even that demanding. I don't know how UZR is done, but I think a zone rating adjusted for (say) park and surrounding teammates would be awfully close to ideal for infielders. Intuitively, that's what I imagine a good infielder does, he makes more plays in his area than other defenders. Outfielders are more complicated -- but that same adjusted zone rating alongside some measure of how far runners get on balls in his direction would go most of the way.
  7. I so wanted to, but it was hell trying to get a visa. I know, I know, I could try to sneak into Canada through Havana. But I'd be nervous the whole time that I'd be caught by Customs. It's just not in me. In any case, good luck, and vive la resistance!
  8. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 4, 2006 -> 12:47 PM) Well, he doesnt really catch that much anymore, he was a DH,1B for awhile. If they plan on starting him every day at C, I would expect an injury. He hasn't played 1b at all this year. Iirc, they tried him there in the preseason, but he was lousy, was hitting like crap, and the Os had a glut at the position, anyway. He's not playing catcher much because they signed Hernandez. But he's still played 20 games there, it's not like he's got to relearn the position. Assuming Mirabelli gets a little extra work, Lopez should hold up fine.
  9. Who'd have thunk it? QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 3, 2006 -> 06:16 PM) Because Baltimore probably would have just let him go to us. And do the Red Sox have a worse record htan us right now? They might be ahead of us on the list. Records didn't matter, the Washington Post said that he passed through waivers. No my$tery why. One interesting part of the article -- "...the only obstacle to the deal being finalized is that the player the Red Sox are sending back to the Orioles still must pass through waivers." I'm surprised the Os are getting any player who'd need to go through waivers (= on the 40-man, right?). A good move by the Sawks. A good hitter for the position, and adequate in the field (figure about 20% cs, his cera is about the team average -- a little better in 2004 and 2006, a little worse in 2005).
  10. Also saw Clerks 2, I didn't know it was possible to make such a bad movie. Smith has been trending down for a long time, but now I'm finally willing to say he's done. Sentimental, unfunny garbage.
  11. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 2, 2006 -> 01:38 PM) Didn't they already trade David Riske for him? Seriously, a.) you think they'd really go for him and b.) you think he could clear waivers? I think he'd get through waivers, but I'm just not sure Boston's willing to panic and give up anything and take on that contract all at once. Lol. I think he'll clear waivers. Baltimore has said they were willing to pay some of his contract, and still had no takers. But I don't know about (a). I can't imagine they'll find a better bat at the position, and his defense is passable. (His cera doesn't look very good, but keep in mind, this is Baltimore's pitching staff.) He's only got about $3 million left on the contract. If Boston decides they really need a catcher, that seems like an amount they could swallow. It's just a thought.
  12. Protests continue . I wonder if Calderon's rhetoric, which hasn't changed much since the vote, isn't getting a little stale.
  13. Well done. Actually, the player assessments are pretty fair. He's just going too far in the conclusions he draws from them. It would take a lot of those negative scenarios happening all at once to derail the Tigers, and although that's possible, it just doesn't look likely.
  14. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 08:28 PM) So, I can only imagine how entertaining this must have been for the police involved. Pulling over Mel Gibson in Malibu, giving him a field sobriety test, finding him with a BAC of .12, and then having him go off on an anti-Jewish rant...well that just had to be the icing on the cake. Imo, that's not just the icing, it's the cake + the icing + the sprinkles + the bitter birthday clown + the pony + the presents + ... Wow. How does that come into his head, anyway?
  15. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 03:32 PM) Gordon Edes: "The Sox this week offered center fielder Coco Crisp to the White Sox for left-handed All-Star Mark Buehrle, perhaps hoping that Buehrle's recent struggles might persuade White Sox GM Kenny Williams to move him. But the White Sox turned the deal down." *** Podsednik and a prospect? When you get a chance pass the crack pipe. With that offer, I think you should ask Epstein before you ask us.
  16. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 03:04 PM) wouldn't it take awhile to stretch out Brandon to become a starter? Usually, yes. But I think there's been a change in philosophy within the organization, after Rauch's troubles. True, Randy Johnson is very tall. But that doesn't, by itself, translate into success. Mike Hampton manages. I believe the new strategy is, rightly, to let the pitcher throw at his normal height. They've given up their old rack(et) -- so to speak.

  18. QUOTE(Harry&JimmyRocked @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 01:38 AM) very nice win today. but once again. home run or nothing.... Joke? There was a nice sac right before the hr.
  19. QUOTE(Jake @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 01:31 AM) I'm not thrilled at all with Linebrink. Can someone enlighten me as to why he is valued so high? I really know little about him other than his numbers are far from flashy and he is 29 years old. His numbers were pretty darn flashy a week ago. And last year, and the year before that. Still, you gotta worry about this week from hell.
  20. QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Jul 28, 2006 -> 11:42 PM) Given the physique of the average poker player, I wouldn't got anywhere near this thing. So that's why ESPN's not covering it... You should've pointed out that your comment in no way refers to hi8is. I'm sure his physique is much worse than average.
  21. QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jul 28, 2006 -> 10:48 PM) Yeah, good point. I like the win and all, but we still played spiffty in general, Garcia looked pretty shaky, and let's face it, Baltimore is a bad team. But who knows, maybe we'll look back on Gload's hit as the biggest one of 2006. Baltimore's bad, but we stayed in the game against someone who's lately been one of the best starters in the majors, and came back against someone who's been one of this year's top closers. If we were facing Rodrigo Lopez, okay. But this is pretty good, however bad Baltimore is, overall.
  22. F yeah. That was such a high. Still a little hoarse. Goddam, that was great!!!
  23. QUOTE(Jake @ Jul 28, 2006 -> 02:33 AM) The thing is - his testosterone levels were actually low. It's just that his epitestosterone levels were incredibly low, which made his T to E ratio almost 11 to 1, which some say can be explained by the cortizone shots he was taking. I honestly don't know what can lower epitestosterone, but I'm told that cortizone blocks epitestosterone production. It seems that if his testosterone levels were actually low relative to the typical man, he was at a disadvantage even though the ratio was off. An AP article claims that's already been ruled out. And Landis' latest claim -- I'm just a high testosterone guy! -- sounds weak. His words: (Link.) He's been this way his whole career? Then why is this the first test to show it? That's the really odd part -- Whichever story's right, why didn't it show up earlier? I haven't heard any good theories on that either way.
