  1. Angles, distances, who cares? It has green seats. /debate over
  2. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 02:32 PM) There just aren't many name plates that fit all of the criteria, and are paying low wages. The law is made that way on purpose. They did try to make this one broader than the Maryland law, so I think this one will stand up to legal muster. I believe that, I just find it hard to believe that it won't affect other companies at all. I imagine Marshalls has an average salary well above the (new) minimum. But it wouldn't shock me if a new part time custodial worker at Marshall Fields gets less than the 10.75 minimum compensation. So it wouldn't affect them in any noticeable way, but it would, strictly speaking, affect them. That's all I mean. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 02:32 PM) There's something heartwarming about how much time and money companies will be willing to spend in order to avoid paying a decent salary to their workforce. This sort of thing is said just to make a company sound meanspirited, as if they're spending MORE money just to guarantee that workers remain poor. If it were cheaper to pay their workers more, they'd do it. But it's just not that costly to turn your 95,000 sq ft store into an 89,995 sq ft store. If you want to talk about contemptible rationalizing, talk about the hypocrisy of these lawmakers. They talk about how everyone should get paid well, then they only apply it to a small group of companies. If you work for a small employer, then you don't deserve a "decent salary"? If they meant anything they say, they'd just pass a $10.75 Chicago minimum wage.
  3. Walmart's response: Fine, then we'll just have a ring of Walmarts around the city. It also mentions other workarounds. The first article mentioned that it "applies to stores of at least 90,000 square feet" -- could the companies just build 89,999 sq ft buildings, instead?
  4. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 02:03 PM) Only about half a dozen companies are affected making up those 40ish locales. So all the rest pay all employees (or just full time -- I'm not sure what the new law stipulates) more than 9.50/hr + benefits already? I'm a little surprised, but okay.
  5. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 01:56 PM) It will be interesting to see the legalistic interpretation of this specific statute. The famous Maryland law got thrown out, as I predicted, because it knowingly applied only to one company. This one actually affects about a half dozen different retailers, including groups like Target, Fields, and Sears. According to the article, it affects 40 stores nominally. Although I'm guessing some stores (Nordstrom's, say) will be more-or-less untouched.
  6. Since his name has been brought up here, seems worth mentioning that Sal Fasano was picked up by the Yanks for a minor leaguer. Kelly Stinnett dfa.
  7. I just wanted to see what the Soxtalk consensus is. At this point, would you like to see Brandon spot start for someone, just as an experiment with BMac and a rest for starter X (take your pick on X)?
  8. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 09:29 PM) I know that KW probably leaked some information to try and get the Tigers to give up more for Soriano, but I really wonder how much these rumors have effected the ball club this week? I dunno how much is KW and how much is Bowden. Bowden's an...a not always very perpicacious (that won't get me banned, right?) gm, but they've both got a motive, here.
  9. QUOTE(loltrain @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 02:34 PM) Dusty Baker pulled a guy because of pitch count? That can't be right... Lol. Only when the season's already in the crapper, though. Fitting.
  10. QUOTE(beleiveinbrian44 @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 09:50 PM) the only good thing that happened today was joe's haircut I'm not a grammar hawk or anything, but for pete's sake, it's your name. Fix that, man. I before e, etc. Don't tell me you've never heard this rule.
  11. I gotta agree with everyone who says, I just don't give a sh1t. Yesterday was the first loss that truly made me nervous. Today was a sh!tty follow-up. If this team can't win, SOON, it won't matter. I'll watch the Sox. Whatever happens elsewhere, happens.
  12. Noone should be upset by this verdict. If you want to be upset because the law allows for not guilty by reason of insanity, fine, argue against that. But if ever there was a case where the perpetrator was clearly insane, this is it.
  13. Just to address the other one, I don't think the O's are looking to trade Roberts. Plus, would you ship out Iguchi just to make a spot for him? Kind of a sideways move, then.
  14. QUOTE(letsgoarow @ Jul 25, 2006 -> 11:40 PM) i work for the danville braves team in the appy league.... we have a small staff so pretty much on game days we get there at 9 in the am for a 7 pm game and then have to count money and so on.... so yeah Doesn't sound like a bad job, overall. Though I can imagine it gets old.
  15. QUOTE(letsgoarow @ Jul 25, 2006 -> 11:16 PM) im on suicide watch......14 hr work days and then this....... and i work for the Fn Braves What are you doing working 14 hour days for the Braves?
  16. Miss Puerto Rico wins, so in my best Colbert imitation... U - S - A !!! U - S - A !!! U - S - A !!! Congratulations for winning something meaningless. Btw, how in hell can Vida Guerra's cell phone pix get on the net, while Zoo Magazine's pix are nowhere to be found? A sad commentary on...my life...but also on...
  17. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Jul 25, 2006 -> 01:19 PM) What he said. Well, except the stuff he did with his sons. I don't know his sons and was NOT invited to the day in the backyard. Not really upset about that...but to be thought about once in awhile might be nice. Lol. I always admired what San Antonio did after winning the championship. Poppovich (I think -- ?) refused to call his team champions, stating that it was a new year and a different team. The obvious rebuttal is that it didn't help them win another. True, but they played well, played hard, and that was with a not-100% Tim Duncan. This Sox team has to figure out that they still have EVERYTHING to prove. And that includes the management.
  18. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Jul 25, 2006 -> 10:59 AM) Also, people may remember that in '04 and even last year, Crede and Konerko weren't exactly good 1st half hitters and this year inexplicably they've been hitting around .300 since the get-go. So maybe their little "slump" has just moved later into the season. The point of this thread is not to be defeatist, the point is, we haven't "clicked" yet, and I think when we do things will happen. Well, if we're not gonna be defeatist, we better pray they didn't just see their slumps jump around. Considering how long the slumps of those 2 can linger on, that would be a world of trouble.
  19. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Jul 25, 2006 -> 10:45 AM) The pitching has NOT been bad lately. Contreras threw a two-run game in Detroit and we lost. Freddy through a good game, and we lost. Buehrle gave up one bad inning, but we were only down three runs. And we lost. Last night we managed to score all of two runs. What team have you been watching? Yeah, there have been good pitching performances (though I wouldn't count Mark's among them). But since you bolded the runs per game since the ASB, don't forget the 5.61 era our staff is sporting over the same period. How about everything is bad lately.
  20. QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Jul 25, 2006 -> 12:25 AM) This is a very steep price but thanks to the Reds and their deal you had to know it wouldn't be cheap to get any relievers now... Someone made the point after the Wickman trade -- gee, look, the Reds were stupid. It didn't set a new price, it was just dumb.
  21. QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 11:01 PM) If you really need the bench spot you can drop Harden. He could come back and be a major factor down the stretch though, so I'd personally like to stash him (in fact, I did in one league). Lee is probably an even better player to keep on the roster after what he did last year. If he comes back, he can have a monster impact. I did the same thing with Lance Berkman last year. He missed the first two months and started slow, but he basically won the league for me in the playoffs. I guess it depends on whether you think you need hitting or pitching more. Both can be impact players down the stretch. Lee might be a little off because of the wrist though, just something to consider. Thanks. Yeah, it's a roto league, and I need some hitting (hr and rbi) and some pitching (strikeouts and wins). I've been leaning towards keeping Harden. Lee might be huge, but with Dusty's talk about him 'not being right till 07', and the Cubs being out of it, it wouldn't surprise me if he's shut down the rest of the year. Even if he does come back, I'm not sure the power will be there (and I'm okay on runs and steals, for whatever he's worth there). Plus, I have Morneau there now. And even if Morneau goes into a swoon like early this season (the next 2 days would be a nice time to start, Justin), there're guys like Mike Jacobs, Adrian Gonzalez, and Frank available to fill in. The dropoff from what Lee's likely to be, to those guys, seems to be less than the dropoff from Harden to the best available starter. It just seems like such a slim chance that Harden is back at all, not to mention starting. Beginning of September at the earliest.
  22. Pods. Won't. Play. Center. We need a song to help people remember...
  23. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 07:50 PM) i think the impending game with the Twins is drawing some attention away I thought that got postponed! Damn games, always screwing with the purity of the game.
  24. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 07:03 PM) He has also never been in a lineup like Washington, with no protection in that lineup..... Yeah, that can help the walks. But you'd think it'd hurt his power. It is one hell of a season, I'll say that. But one season doesn't cut it. Esteban Loaiza is definitely not a "great" pitcher.
  25. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 06:57 PM) All along from what I've been told by a rock solid source, BMac was insisted upon by Washington. Maybe they backed down on that demand in the last couple of days, but if they haven't this whole thing was much to do about nothing. The articles were all worded so awkwardly, it made you wonder. Never 'imminent trade of Alfonso Soriano for Brandon McCarthy', always, 'imminent, and the Nationals want Brandon McCarthy'. It may have been the Nats trying to get the Tigers' price up, too.
