QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 06:55 PM) Well, he looks great this year, but he hasn't always looked so good. For Texas last year, he had a HUGE home/road HR differential. When he was with the Yanks in the playoffs, you could always get him out because he was such a free swinger. They dropped him way down the lineup because his OBP was so bad. The guy seems like a fantastic talent, but I still don't think he's a disciplined hitter. And he's never paid enough attention to defense to be a complete player. Not that it matters. He'll still get a load of cash. But I agree. In every single category, this year screams, Fluke. He's never walked this much in an entire season. He's never had an obp or a slg this high, ever. I'm not willing to say he's great until he sustains this for a few full seasons.

Thanks for all the great advice, guys. Now, same league, I've had Harden on the dl. But now Lee is back on the dl, and his best case scenario has him returning in August, while Harden at best returns in September (even then, there's talk he'll only go into the pen). Opinions on who to keep in the dl spot? I can't afford to keep both. They're both probably lost causes, I know that. But there's noone much better to stash in that spot.

Wow. We even gotta be nice to Jim Rome, the guy who's proud to have never been nice to anybody?

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 05:20 PM) Rafeal Soriano would sure look good in a Sox Uniform. Unlikely now that we've traded for MacDougal. There have been reports that his shoulder's been sore, though.

Sox get Mike MacDougal for Tyler Lumsden and Daniel Cortes

QUOTE(Melissa1334 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 05:16 PM) for? Jeremy Reed. First Sandy, now Jeremy. KW's gonna make everything right again. -
QUOTE(rcpweiner @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 05:04 PM) That says a lot right there. 23 in AA? It says he went to college, not much besides.

QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:48 PM) i hope he's willing to hit batters or his ass is gonna be in AAA ^^^ Rueful laugh. -

MacD gets so much love from journalists, and I've just never understood why. I mentioned it somewhere else, but he seems to be the AJ Burnett of relievers. All the awe, not much of the production. But you do get the injuries. I gotta give him that. We'll see, though. If his talent is close to his billing, it'll be a fine trade. -
QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 04:33 PM) Um, didn't Pods play center prior to the Sox and isn't the whole point then putting Soriano in left? No. Prior to the Sox, center played him.

Welcome to Chicago, AJ Burn...I mean, Mike MacDougal. qwertyworld's take: MacDougal's under the club's control for 2 more years, right? (This is his 6th year w/ ML time, but in the first 2 years he was a September callup -- I think...)

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 02:01 AM) Jackie, not many ever catch it when you make a joke, do they? I think that was actually better than usual. It's always fun to have that one person, though...

QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 01:37 AM) So Crede, Garcia, Broadway, and Sweeny to New York for A-Rod? No way. I don't want to trade this team's future for someone who's just gonna be 5- or 6-year rental.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 01:08 AM) From the ACLU's Mission Statement: Amendments 1, 3, 4, and 5 if I'm reading this right. Prolly not 3. Not often, I bet. Plus toss in a few. 6 and 14, for due process, anyway. Some more wiggle into those topics. 8 is "cruel and unusual punishment", which would probably fall under due process. Wow, has this veered off topic.

QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 09:32 PM) I think what I am trying to say is that everyone is making this out to be a major trade but in reality it is extremely minor and need to stop overreacting to a player that may play one game a week. But if AJ gets hurt, then were in trouble, but would be in the same boat if Widger were here. I understand, the backup catcher isn't a major part of the team. But Widger got plenty of attention as the backup catcher, so I think you're downplaying his role too much. It's obviously big enough to get noticed.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 09:18 PM) Buehrle with Widger catching: 33 ER in 53 IP : 5.60 Buehrle with AJ catching: 34 ER in 80 IP: 3.82 At a time when we need the old Mark back, if we have a backup catcher that he always enjoyed throwing to, instead of Widger, it could be a boon to our southpaw. And the obvious question is...since he seems to enjoy throwing to AJ, why is it so important to bring in a second catcher MB enjoys throwing to? QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 09:18 PM) I just don't see why everyone is getting upset for. I doubt if this is KW only move and it's not the big splash that we've been looking for and no one should expect that to be. Sandy is only going to be playing 1 game a week, if that. It's not like he's the new starter over AJ or anything. It is what it is, a clubhouse move. It's a lateral move at best but if the coaches want this move, then I've got to go with them. I think that's an odd argument, considering how everyone was clamoring for Widger (also the backup) to be dfa. I guess the idea is that, even if Sandy doesn't necessarily play better than Widger, his presence will make everyone else play so much better that we won't notice the backup catcher. I think that argument sounds pretty shaky, but we'll see.

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 10:23 AM) Honestly though, if Bush holdsout, then do any of you think he'll be taken #1 next year? I don't think he would. I think too many teams would see him as a bad apple that's greedy. He'd probably still go in the top 5, but a guy who didn't play football for a year and was complaining because he didn't get #1 money doesn't sit well with quite a few teams. Then again, there might be the 49ers who are desperate for a RB again and they would take him #1 overall. I think the team picking #1 would let it be known that they want a deal done before the draft (assuming he's still in great shape, isn't surpassed by Brady Quinn on their board, etc etc etc), and they'd probably take him #1 on the condition that the deal gets done.

Inmate chooses electric chair over lethal injection
jackie hayes replied to minors's topic in The Filibuster
Some of the worst-case scenarios about lethal injection sound pretty grisly. At least, in one of the famous botched electrocution cases, the guy was able to call out for help, instead of being paralyzed. I probably wouldn't choose it, but it's not a bizarre decision. -
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 22, 2006 -> 02:53 PM) I can't understand why the NFL doesn't do something like the NBA or MLB and come up with actual reccomendations or requirements for the salaries of their rookie draft picks. Seriously, if nothing else, doesn't it really hurt the salaries of the veterans who are already in the NFLPA to have teams saving their salary cap space to sign these rookies? ^^^^^ Exactly, just slot the picks and avoid all these holdouts over such a small difference in money. I don't see any reason for the players' union to oppose the change. The NFL has the rookie cap-within-the-cap. If the Saints give Bush what he wants, does that mean they can't sign their 2nd round pick? 3rd round pick? What are the ramifications?

I don't get to watch too many of the games, even fewer w/ Hawk + DJ. They really have become pretty critical, haven't they? I was surprised. I just can't get angry about it today. It's just gotten depressing. Like when you aren't sure which "loser" thread is today's. I wish Ozzie would have done a couple things differently, but I'm not convinced it would have made a difference. Noone's playing well, nothing's working. No trade'll fix it. How long we gotta wait, guys?

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 22, 2006 -> 05:10 PM) Ken Rosenthal on Fox reported KW has inquired about Soriano. KW is always willing to give up prospects.Seems KW is about as sick of Pods as most on this board. What are they asking for? It's just a rental, but then we'd get 2 draft picks next year, correct? (How do they figure the free agent type with a player who's changed positions, anyway?) In the end, it's about the rotation recovering, though. And anyone who'll be in the rotation is already with the team. So, although I think a couple moves could help, I'm not gonna be heartbroken by what does or doesn't happen at the deadline.

QUOTE(holly wiggins @ Jul 22, 2006 -> 01:13 PM) My comment was in response to the "If he is turning the corner, it sure as hell better be now." That's insightful analysis? Supportive comment? I didn't think it read as such. The way it comes across as I read it is that Mark Buehrle needs to shape the f up right NOW! -- as if it were somehow in MB's control and power to do that immediately and he just didn't want to. If I read it wrong, that happens, it's the internet. The rest of your post makes no sense to me, sorry. You seem to be referencing posts I've made in the past? I don't remember what they were. If you do, frankly, that creeps me out a little bit. In fact, you seem to be bringing a lot more emotion into this than I think it warrants. How about you ignore my posts in the future and I'll ignore yours? Win/win. It's not "supportive", b/c he's not Mark's mommy. It's just a statement of fact -- we need MB to turn it on before we slide too far. I didn't know Soxtalk was a coddling club. But I want to assure you that I'm not referencing any posts you've made in the past. I can honestly say that I can't think of anything memorable that you've posted, ever. So, rest assured. Since you need a guide, here it is. The "scare-quotes" is in reference to the scare-quotes you used in the post I quoted. Very subtle, I know. The "class" was in reference to your use of the word "classy" in the post I quoted. "Trashing" Buehrle was in reference to your statement that GS was "trashing" Buehrle. Anything else you can't figure out? I'm afraid the Cliffs Notes will be a while.
