  1. Maxima and Corolla are two different ballgames. If you decided you wanted a Maxima, you'd have to go used to get under 15. And you'd probably be very close to your limit, unless you were buying a junker Maxima. Personally, I'd say go used on a Corolla and pocket the rest. Be careful, take the car to a good mechanic before buying if it's a private seller, do a lot of research on price, etc etc etc, but it's so much cheaper, and those suckers last forever anyway. Jmho. I've only owned one car, and I bought it new b/c I was paranoid about it falling apart. I wish I would have just saved myself $5k or so.
  2. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 17, 2006 -> 09:57 PM) When comparing Riske and Linebrink you must also keep in mind that both have been used in different ways for the past 3 years. Linebrink has been the setup man to Trevor Hoffman meaning for the past few seasons he's been comming in to games in the 8th inning, crunch time and absolutely shutting down his oponents. Riske on the other hand has been more of a middle reliever, comming in to games in the 6th-7th inning and only sparingly in the 8th or 9th. The biggest knock on Riske has been his career pitching in crunch time when he's been known to give up the big HR (*cough*crede*cough*). So you have Linebrink who's one of the premier right handed setup men in all of baseball and on the other you have Riske who's a damn good middle reliever but not much of a late inning guy. I don't really see much of a comparison. Also, it's funny because I brought up a very similar trade to this at the end of the first game thread yesterday and about a month ago too. I'd love to get Linebrink, even if it costs Fields. At the sig. Well done.
  3. QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 17, 2006 -> 09:47 PM) Sure, San Diego may demand more for him, and get it. But after you factor in pitching in the AL, I think if an AL team gets him, they may be in for a shock. Some guys adjust well. Others less so. I'm all for Linebrink if the price is a minor leaguer of secondary importance. As I said above, I don't think SD will accept that. Still, that's probably all I'd be willing to pay. Plus, Linebrink has 6 years in the league. How soon is he a FA? Is he gone next year? Is that why they're talking about dealing him? mlb4u.com sez...that he has a 2007 vesting option that will almost certainly go into effect, if it hasn't already (100 games in 2005 + 2006, combined). But it's pretty cheap, $1.75 mil up to 150 combined appearances, $2.25 if he goes over that. Either way, it increases his trade value. I think we got a bit of a bargain with Riske because we happened to have just what the Sawx were looking for, a young lhp they believed in, when not many teams did, and they have a glut of young pitchers. I just don't think we're likely to run into many deals as lucky as that anytime soon, and using that as a standard is unrealistic. That said, I accept your point that Linebrink is not THAT much better than Riske. I'm just saying, realistically, Fields is closer to the price than Lopez. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 17, 2006 -> 09:52 PM) Scott Cameron Linebrink: signed 2-year deal worth 2.275M on 1/14/05- he will make 910K in 2005 and 1.365M in 2006- + the deal includes a Vesting Team Option worth 1.75M or a Buyout worth an unknown amount- + the option can become guaranteed at 1.75M with 100 or more games pitched combined over 2005 and 2006- + the value of the option can rise up to 2.25M with incremental bumps depending on appearances in the first 2 seasons: if he makes more than 150 appearances the option would be guaranteed for a worth of 2.25M Agent: Service Time: 4.016 SD has a "vested team option" for 2007. Sounds like he'll be making a guaranteed $2.25 mill in 2007--he's made/ will make near 150 appearances last yr and this--a raise of nearly $1 mill Ach, I'm slow.
  4. Good analysis, but Linebrink WILL command a lot more than Riske. Linebrink is coming off 2 phenomenal years, while Riske's coming off a 'merely excellent' year, plus an injury. Plus, over their careers, Linebrink has been better even controlling for league & park. (Although I know some might not believe that, but for those who do...)
  5. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 17, 2006 -> 08:49 PM) Maybe a team like Seattle would be interested in Cameron, and the Sox could then on trade him for some pitching prospects or more bullpen help? No, no, no. You're forgetting that he'd have to go through Cincinnati first.
  6. QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Jul 17, 2006 -> 06:05 PM) It'd be nice if your team name is something similar to your screen name so I can figure out who we have. It's not the end of the world though. I can figure it out if your Yahoo ID is similar, or you can just post in here who you are. As for the draft time, it can be moved if it needs to be. I have too much fun with the team names to give it up just now... But my email is jackiehayes2b, so it should be clear. For now -- Tiki Barber Is Bald! -- says hi. But that could change.
  7. QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 17, 2006 -> 04:54 AM) Tipping his pitches maybe? I really hope that's the problem. Considering how everyone's jumping on him early, it certainly fits, and that's the one possibility that's easily fixed.
  8. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 17, 2006 -> 11:35 AM) Did I blend the two? If so, it was more symbolic. If you want to get into that level of the argument (which I doubt the Indians gave a damn about), then yes, MD was an American thing. I basically made that point. This is certainly a good point. The situation is not at all black and white. Actually, read my post again. I very specifically mentioned the attack on Israel by Egypt and Syria. I can seriously compare them because they are more alike than not, for the reasons I listed. You have blended the Chirstianity drive (more a Spanish and French thing) with MD (American thing) that you earlier criticized me for blending. Are they related or not? For you to say there is no similarity at all is kind of ridiculous and blind. If you feel they are different in a lot important ways, I can see that. But to say something like "Just, no similarity at all, none" is inaccurate on its face, unless you can tell me how each parallel I drew is non-existent. MD had nothing to do with Europeans. That's just a fact. And while you mention that Israel is attacked, you did not mention that its attackers controlled the Palestinian areas themselves, which is an important detail. I'm not going to get into a big thing over this. I find your "parallels" superficial, and it would be easy to find random things in common between any two groups alive at any time. Somehow I feel ancient, maintained claim to a nation is fundamentally different than purely economic exploitation. Somehow I believe clearly defined nations are fundamentally different than people who happen to be living in one place, as the Cherokee nation is different than the Chicago suburbs. You disagree. Okay. You asked for discussion and I gave an honest answer. I thought you were totally wrong, I said that bluntly, and I gave reasons. For that I'm blind? Bulls***. You're just arranging things to see what you want to see. Blindness looks pretty good in comparison.
  9. Just, no. First of all, Manifest Destiny was the idea that America had a divine mission to expand across our continent; it has nothing to do with European colonization of the Americas. Now as for the supposed parallel -- while the Native Americans were clearly defined nations/peoples, it's hard to argue that about the Palestinians. There were a significant number of Jews in Palestine, originally, who were very much pro-Israel. And the fractured nature of the population makes it hard to say that there was a right to the land -- whose right? And while you admit that the land was taken as a "defensive buffer", you fail to mention that it was taken in response to an attack on Israel by the countries that controlled those areas (there was no 'state of Palestine' that Israel overran). That's war -- if you use something against me, or if you can, I'm gonna do something to neutralize that advantage. Hardly "Trail of Tears" type stuff. Finally, I don't know how you can seriously compare explicit exploitation for economic reasons, under a "manufactured banner" of bringing Christianity to 'heathens' (not MD, but okay), to a claim of landright that dates back millennia. Just, no similarity at all, none.
  10. Jered Weaver has a start pushed back after he's diagnosed with bicep tendinitis. There is no joy in Mudville of LA of Anaheim.
  11. Isn't there an issue about costs? While the metal bats are more expensive, they last forever. I think, especially for college teams, wooden bats would end up being more expensive. Iirc, there was some discussion a while ago about MLB possibly subsidizing wooden bats for college/jc programs... Aside from that, and some kids getting in a huff about not hitting as many hrs, there's really no reason not to go to wood bats.
  12. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 03:03 PM) I thought Joe Crede had a bad leg. And I thought he had two. Yuk, yuk, yuk. Yuck....
  13. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 02:45 PM) I wonder if BMac will throw today....it might be telling if he doesn't. ^^^^^^ No innings yesterday, no innings today... We'll see.
  14. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 02:39 PM) We're what? 80 something games into the season and this team has supposedly not even hit it's "rythym" yet? If they havn't picked it up by now what makes you think they will at all, Hawk? This is our 91st game of the season.
  15. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 02:33 PM) If Thome had done anything but struck out, the Rally Seizure would have made an appearance. Just have it ready.
  16. QUOTE(soxunited @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 02:12 PM) Of all the members of the pitching staff, I feel Ozzie shows the most favoritism to Garcia, I can recall on many occaisions early in the season where Ozzie has left Garcia out there to rot when he should have been pulled. I feel that to some degree, Ozzie has to take take some blame for the state of the pitching staff, he has pushed his starters too far in the first part of the season, and it's starting to show. He expected them to throw complete games, and it just couldn't happen this season. I don't think that's true. At the start of the season, the sp was pretty solid, but the pen was atrocious. Now it's reversed. Although I wish we could have kept the innings down for the rotation, at the time it didn't look wise.
  17. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 01:56 PM) Livan, Lieber and Armas aren't near as valuable as Freddy. Although the first two when on are total horses, not the greatest pitchers but definately solid. Armas has a ridiculous injury history. A's aren't about to deal Zito unless they are getting front line stuff in return and there is no way the Giants are moving Schmidt unless they fall out of contention. Plus I Think the Giants are planning on doing what they can to resign Jason. But from everything that's been written, Beane considers Milledge "front line stuff". So how is it Freddy is going to leapfrog Zito?
  18. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 01:41 PM) If you'd like to enlighten me on whose available in this market with so many teams in contention? Jason Schmidt isn't available unless a team is giving up a pretty damn good starting pitcher back to the Giants. So if you guys know of any pitchers who are proven winners on the market, do tell. I wouldn't count out Schmidt, nor Zito, especially if Harden makes some progress in his recovery. Smoltz could be moved. Then you have to lump Freddy in with the 2nd tier guys, Livan Hernandez, Jon Lieber, Tony Armas. So if all the top tier guys are called untouchable, and all the teams owning the 2nd tier guys demand the very best prospects, then you could perhaps command that price for Freddy. I just don't see that happening.
  19. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 01:40 PM) I don't care that they are seeing him pitch, they know the guy has done it and as recently as last year. Plus he's had streaks this year where he was doing it. Teams in the race would f***ing love to pick up a guy like Garcia and see what they could do and they'd give up a fortune. For crap sakes the Drays get an upper echelon catching prospect for Mark Hendrickson and the Angels got a solid outfield prospect with some pop for Jeff Weaver. You guys are kidding yourselves if you don't think we could swing him to a team like the Mets for a top notch pitching prospect and maybe a guy like Heilman. You think we could get (say) Pelfrey AND Heilman? Agree to disagree on that. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 01:40 PM) Hopefully it helps, but I'd like to see the Joe Crede banner up after the game. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Please...
  20. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 01:40 PM) Hawk with some very, very strong words. What were they?
  21. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 01:35 PM) You can't deny that teams would give up upper echelon prospects for him though, teams like the Mets, Yankees, or Cardinals. I can deny that, though. At least in this market. I can't imagine they won't be able to do better if they're willing to deal Milledge and Hughes.
  22. QUOTE(CrimsonWeltall @ Jul 16, 2006 -> 01:06 AM) This is less descriptive than "on 34th street, by the Suarez Panederia". To be fair, it is an Arabic-speaking area, so we are talking about a different alphabet too.
  23. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 08:56 PM) I learned to love Buehrle threads long ago, the words "scary, very scary" come to mind. ^^^^^^^ Or, How I learned to stop worrying and love the Mark-Buehrle-is-not-an-ace bomb.
  24. Update -- Lopez Obrador claimed he had "irrefutable" video proof that the election had been rigged. Someone should have told his own polling place representatives. From that liberal propoganda machine, the NYT: Lopez Obrador's response? All those people must be accepting bribes... Anyway, it's a good read.
