QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 11, 2006 -> 12:08 AM) I personally think it would be a pretty big deal. It would obviously be big in terms of salary and names. But the Griffey rumors have been around for years, now. When I hear that a trade will be "huge", I expect to be surprised. I'm not too surprised that the Reds would trade one of the biggest disappointments in many years to the only team in the majors willing to pay his salary, jmho.

So Griffey by himself makes this a "huge" deal? A waning great who gets injured every single year? Only to ESPN.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 10:36 PM) Brian is hitting .333 in July. I think that's picking it up. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 10:39 PM) Brian Anderson is hitting about .270 over the past month as well as .333 in July with an .840 OPS. He is hitting right now and has been for quite some time now. His July stats are great, but that's about 4 full games worth. And he's been good over the last month, too, but it seems kind of arbitrary to throw out the rest of June, when he was terrible. Just trying to keep it in context -- as I've said, I think he'll hit well enough from here out. QUOTE(quickman @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 10:44 PM) actaully this may sound strange coming from me, but let me set the record on a few things. The first is I like andersen in the field. I think he is already better than Rowand and I do think andersen will one day win a gold glove. Now that has no bearing on this year. When you have a chance to win the whole thing, take it. I am not advocating Andersen or mcarthy to leave this team. i suggest we use other chips, but I do believe if andersen continues to struggle than we will continue to struggle in the long run as well. I am not saying he is an MVP just that we need a better hitting approach from him. as far as the minors are concerned, I don't care too much for these guys because I think 1 out 10 make it. The ratio is probably worse than that. In addition free agency has completely changed the game and a team can fill in pieces with those types of players if need be. I do think there will be a time in the future where the sox will fail and then sell off there parts to rebuild. At that time I will look to folks like yourself and the futuresox people to determine if we are getting good value for our major league players we are trading. Right now though I am thinking pennant race and world series. None of this really surprises me, so I'm not sure how you're correcting me. All I said was that you don't seem to believe that minor league hitting stats translate well to the pros, which I disagree with.

QUOTE(quickman @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 10:26 PM) hey jackie, I actually don't think I am doing that. I think that if he hits 250 from here on out, than we will be ok, but time is not on our side. KW will need to make a decision on that within a month. If the guy was hitting 250 already this would not be talked about and we would be concentrating on the bullpen. Yeah, I wasn't sure about you. I know you don't care much about minor league stats, but I do, and from those I find it hard to believe that he'll hit below .200 for the rest of the year. And, jmo, but I'm not too picky about anything between .230-.270, as long as he manages an obp over .300 (and preferably .310), and picks up the power a bit. Which I think he'll do, so I'm not eager to give up much for a cf.

Zito signs with Boras in preparation for free agency
jackie hayes replied to Phuck the Cubs's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 03:53 PM) Don't just assume Yankees and Red Sox. It's not like most Boras clients go there. In fact, Boras will often use those teams to get teams like the Rangers, Dodgers, Angels, Cardinals, etc. to bid up I agree, but I still think the Yanks are a good bet. They could use a decent lefty with that rf porch, and Randy hasn't been as good as advertised. Getting someone as young as Zito could be exactly what they're looking for. I mean, they wanted Milton, for chrissakes. -
BA dug himself such a deep hole that he's not gonna look good in the final account, like Paulie in 2003. I hope everyone can keep that in mind, and not keep citing the year-total stats. Which most people here seem to be doing, I'm just saying.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 10:03 PM) Nope, Golden Ball and Golden Boot. Golden Ball = Overall MVP = Zinedine Zidane/France Golden Boot = Most Goals = Miroslav Klose/Germany Right, but there's a 'best goalkeeper' award, too, I think. Just saying, Zidane was good, but I think calling him the best player is a stretch. (Even if one -- somehow -- ignores the shameful display at the end.)

Woke up as Patrick Duffy. Found I had a craving for potato soup. Some asshole had issues with that. Pretty crappy day, after all. And the Bennigan's staff is usually so pleasant. -
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 08:31 PM) McCarthy did good yesterday from what I hear, but damn, you guys are on his nuts. Yesterday didn't change the fact that overall, he's been sucky this season and he has yet to show that he is good for more than a few starts in a season. Sorry for not conforming and ready to label this guy as the Messiah. He hasn't been as good as expected, but saying he's been "sucky" is laughable. Decent era, whip, and strikeouts -- from the long man, who can't go all out for 1 inning and hang it up. Why haven't we sent his ass down to aaa yet? Noone's saying he's the "Messiah", just that he's the ONLY cheap, dependable pitcher we have ready. We're talking 10 million dollars of payroll flexibility for 3 years or so. So until I hear how $10 million for free agents and trades does not help us, I'm gonna say that BMac is DAMN valuable.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 06:34 PM) Haha...a day later, Zidane wins the World Cup Golden Ball. Everyone's eligible, right? Buffon deserved it more. Jmho. Or is it something like MVP/Cy Young, how a CY is essentially a 'pitcher's MVP'?

Bullpen has fewest innings pitched in AL

QUOTE(tealeafreaderii @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 05:34 PM) (the .2 meaning 20% of an inning and not 2 outs) That's it! What the Sox need, now that Thornton is working regular, is a dedicated LTFOGY. -
QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 04:59 PM) It was only a matter of time. http://tonaz.altervista.org/zidane.html

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jul 10, 2006 -> 01:56 AM) This is Brian Sabean we are talking about here. Why in the bluef*** would he want young players? Young players are the curse to him. Yeah, but the only thing the Giants hate more than a young player is a first-round draft pick. And if Schmidt walks, he could get two. (Shudders.)

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 9, 2006 -> 10:38 AM) Knowing Beane, Zito will probably be traded at the deadline to get some value back. I wonder how that will go. Not really. If Zito walks, the A's get 2 compensatory picks. Unless he gets something that bests that (aka, Lastings Milledge), he'll just let him play out the string. -
Ignore teh h8rs, 14, g00d 4 u! You gotta pick a love interest on this Sox roster, we miss your posts. Bobby? AJ? Jim is country strong, ya know... Well, I'll let you decide.

One incentive year with (maybe) a big team option/low buyout for a 2nd. If Gagne's healthy, he's worth quite a bit, so I wouldn't worry too much about the possible value with incentives. My initial reaction is that I would balk at anything above $3 mil in guarantees (keeping in mind that Sox doctors could examine him before the signing).

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jul 8, 2006 -> 12:12 PM) Hugo Chavez is a bit of a thug. But no worse by any means than any thug that has manhandled a South American country before him. In fact, because a lot of his actions have been geared toward improving the livelihood of Venezuela's poorest, he's a much better thug comparatively than most of the thugs we have running things in this world. He talks about it, but I don't think that's what his actions are actually "geared toward". Like when he offered to sell gas cheap to the poor in the US -- he could sell Venezuela's oil on the world market and use the proceeds to help the poorest of the poor in Venezuela, who are certainly worse off than the average US citizen who would have benefited from his program. He's a demagogue and a self-aggrandizer. Anyway, back to Mexico -- the European Union observers have reported no significant irregularities. If there's any proof of fraud beyond a couple of longtime PRDers being quoted in a paper, now would be a good time to provide it, b/c at this point the PRD just looks undemocratic.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 7, 2006 -> 11:08 PM) But, but, supply side economics doesn't work... Its all the housing market... Its all the stock market... Tax cuts don't pay themselves off /cliches All those commies who have attacked the ideas must feel damn foolish. Bush 1, Greg Mankiw, Bruce Bartlett, whoever wrote pages 57-58 of the 2003 Economic Report of the President... Ha! And since public borrowing dampens private investment, it's a good thing this WH has cut public spending so dramatically. Wait... Supply side economics = intelligent design, just for the rich. Maybe it comforts someone, but it's still total bs. -

QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 6, 2006 -> 11:45 AM) With 99.61% of the count complete, Calderon leads by a whopping 0.47%. Wow, this is going to be tied up in the courts forever. :headshake Yup. And worse, Obrador has said "It is clear that there was manipulation", and called for a large rally. A peaceful 'let the courts work' message? Depends who you talk to. Going to court is fine, but Obrador has left himself no room to concede defeat, which is just shameful.

QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Jul 6, 2006 -> 02:12 PM) Not to sound like a pessimist, but the O's are not the Royals, so he will probably get rocked. But I hope he doesn't. Looking at how the Royals are hitting lately, I'm not sure which one I'd rather be facing now. I'm glad we're clear of this hot streak they've somehow put together.

4 ip after skipping rookie ball? C'mon... No reason to even think about this until two months or so.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 6, 2006 -> 11:08 AM) I think I took the article differently than you did. Its not that any one act of humility or apology is somehow earth-shattering. Its that there is a string of little ones, indicating a persona. That persona, as a whole, represents something that I (and she) would cotend is novel among his cohorts. And I think she is right. Look at Amy Sullivan's writings during the 2004 election campaign. She wrote article after article trying to convince people that Kerry's religion is real, at least as real as Bush's. (Not that I disagree, or know one way or another, just stating the fact.) She sees this as a major obstacle to the Democrats, and I believe this article was another attempt to build up the Dem's religious (maybe, Christian) bonafides. But, jmho, in doing so she took two minor points entirely out of context and out of perspective. Obama is a very, very good politician. But I have no idea whatsoever about his personality. Deciphering persona from public speech is a pretty sketchy proposition. I don't believe the person you'd limn after reading the Lincoln-Douglas debates is much like the Lincoln that we know of from a more full knowledge of his life. Edit: An example of the article blowing something out of proportion: But if you listen to the speech, he's careful to distance himself from these words ("right-wing ideologues"). He attributes these to his staff, with the excuse that these are standard Democrat "boilerplates". But if she mentioned how careful he is to avoid credit for those words, it would work against the humility that she so much wants to inject. He's basically apologizing for someone else's mistake. I want the Dems to win, but spin is spin, no matter what side it's on.
