QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 09:35 PM) Given how rare any sort of humility at all is at that level, at least in the public eye, I'd say that it IS a big difference. It makes him a far sight from a lot of his cohorts, which I believe was the point. Even if that's true (and I don't agree that minor humility is so rare), it's like calling someone a saint because he's the only one on the block who's not kicking his dog. I want to see real humility, not relative humility, before I give a politician any credit for it. Nor do I understand why the first mistake (the response to Keyes) is any different than Kerry stating that his 'I voted against before I voted for' was a poor choice of words. And that was taken (correctly) as politics, not self-humbling. Look, it's a fine speech, I just think that Sullivan's interpretation of it as some form of public confession is one of the silliest misreadings in a long time. Personally, I don't think Obama meant the speech to be taken that way, at all. But she seemed determined to write a hagiography, and wrestled the material to fit her goal.

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 06:39 PM) It seems like a lot of votes were missing from the preliminary totals and I seem to remember that the votes being reported never did reach 100%. Some of the votes reported as "missing" were ineligible ballots (illegible, extraneous marks, etc). I think there were a couple million such votes. But they did a 'best guess' count on those ballots on the first count, and by that count, iirc, Calderon still would have won with a .6% lead (instead of a 1% lead).

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 05:32 PM) Calderon also has offered Obrador a position in cabinet. Which is probably a pre-emptive attempt to look willing to compromise knowing that Obrador won't accept. Obrador still winning PRD 37.11% NAP 34.52% 54.92% reporting I don't know what's going on. I think Calderon said in the same breath exactly that, that he probably wouldn't accept. Either there was in fact rampant corruption, or maybe Obrador-heavy districts were more eager to get the recount going? So, a charismatic politician captures the highest office in the land, but when his publicly inept chosen successor runs it turns out the coattails are very, very short. I feel like I've heard this story somewhere before...

Official Soxtalk 2006 World Cup Thread

QUOTE(AssHatSoxFan @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 11:09 AM) an all floppers final of italy and portugal might not be much fun to watch Exactly what I was thinking. The ref should just leave the whistle in his pocket for the first 10 minutes or so. -
Yeah, well, those are pretty minor mistakes he's admitting to. John Edwards admitted to being flat wrong on the Iraq vote. Obama admits to a tactical mistake against a joke candidate and a pretty minor overstatement. Oh, what heart-rending humility. I'm not trying to take anything away from Obama, just saying, that article is blowing this WAY out of proportion.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 11:16 PM) If the deal with the Hornets goes down, I kind of look at it like the Lee-Pods deal... All right, Tony, giving the first championship guarantee! -
QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 3, 2006 -> 10:20 AM) What's up with the Roberto Hernandez talk? Did he leave here on good terms?? Did he leave on bad terms? Honest question. All I remember is how pissed everyone was with the Sox for making that trade, I don't recall anything against Hernandez.

Cotts as a starter or permanent reliever?
jackie hayes replied to shawnhillegas's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It has nothing to do with Cotts, really. If enough guys fail at some point, they'll try him, o/w, get comfy out there. -
QUOTE(holly wiggins @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 01:53 PM) So how would we know if KW were NOT shopping for a center fielder -- that's my point. If he's going to say he's not when he is, and he's not when he isn't, then it seems to me (with all due respect, and I am not "acting like you're the one making this up") that you are hearing KW say what you want him to say. Because I hear KW say that the job belongs to BA, and what that means to me is that the job belongs to BA. That's all. Yes, of course I know that assurances can mask entirely different plans by the brass -- does anyone REALLY think that Dusty Baker's job is as safe as Hendry says it is? -- but sometimes assurances are assurances. Only time will tell, obviously. And if KW trades for a center fielder, then I will state on this board that you were right and had more insight into this than I. And if he does not trade for a center fielder ... I don't "want" KW to say anything in particular, so, no. I'm a BA fan, and I think he'll turn it around in the 2nd half. On the other hand, if there really is anything to the Andruw Jones rumors, it'd be hard to turn down talent like that, if the Sox are willing to take on the salary for a couple years. Whatever Kenny decides to do, I'll be happy with it. The reason I brought it up, is because it's a baseball (or sports) cliche that I'm sure a lot of us were thinking about. As I said, I only meant it half seriously, which is half as serious as you're taking it. If KW makes a trade for a cf, I neither want nor deserve credit for squat.

QUOTE(Twins Win @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 02:08 PM) I was wishing you luck because I was just being nice. I'm not going to get too excited about the way the Twins have played until they're about 2 games back. I know, just being hard on you. Though I do still hope you lose like the 69 Cubs.

No, I just clicked on it blindly, and I was a little surprised when the WH site came up, so I thought it would be good for a laugh. N/m... I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be seeing on that page, but whatever.

Quotes of the Month: Uncensored and Uncut
jackie hayes replied to Heads22's topic in Soxtalk Awards Archive
Can I nominate the Sox? Well, too bad. The Sox headline about getting AJ into the ASG: "'Punch A.J.' campaign under way". I luuuuuuuuuuv the fact that I'm easily amused. This must be what Heads had in mind when he used that emoticon. -
Don't you get it? We're fed up with all these links to wacko, leftist websites.
-
Why would you wish us luck? I'm hoping you guys crash and burn, myself. And the Kitties. But I do hope you have a lovely day. As for Liriano, well...yeah. Was anyone questioning that?

QUOTE(holly wiggins @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 12:07 PM) So if KW says he's shopping for a center fielder, then he IS shopping for a center fielder. And if KE says he's not shopping for a center fielder, then he IS shopping for a center fielder. Okay, I think I understand now. :headshake This is an old idea that I bet 95% of the people here understood. It's often said that a manager's kiss of death is when the gm announces something like, I have all the faith in the world that Charlie'll turn this thing around. I'm only half-serious about it here, but don't act like I'm the one making this up.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 02:57 AM) Andruw Jones just turned 29 meaning he's a year younger than Konerko and a year older than Crede, I really wouldn't call his age a huge negative in this one. As for the "not trying" bulls***, the guy has had random times throughout his career (mainly when he was around 20) when he would maybe not go all out for a ball hit in front of him, there are a ton of players in the league who do this, just about all of them do it, most of them do it far more often than Andruw. But since Jones has spent his entire career with Bobby Cox riding his ass and calling him out everytime he does something stupid he's been labeled as "lazy" and such. It's a joke. Yeah, there was that time when Cox sent in a defensive sub in the middle of the inning b/c he thought Andruw was dogging it. I think that went a long way toward cementing his "lazy" reputation. But that was a long time ago, and iirc he's been praised the last couple years as a hard worker. It wouldn't concern me.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 12:59 AM) 1.) Veteran team or not, the offense on that Diamondback team, for the most part, sucked. Luis Gonzalez was good, Reggie Sanders and Mark Grace were decent. They had a pretty good bench, which helped, but for their starters, they had three above average hitters. The Twins are a much more well-rounded team, and as of a couple weeks ago, got better at three different positions, without even mentioning the pitching. The left side of the infield just got a HUGE upgrade, replacing Castro with Bartlett and Batista with Cuddyer. Jason Kubel is finally healthy, and is hitting the way he was pre-injury. Morneau is flashing his power potential. Need I mention Mauer? 2.) So, Johan Santana is going to flip the calander, see it's September, and start to suck? Or, wait -- Liriano is going to do that, right? 'Cause he's a rookie? Is that what you're saying? No real good reasoning, just that their young, and don't have that mystical "veteran presence"? Ha. Ha ha. The kid made the point that two pitchers (starters, as he was pointing to Santana and Liriano) can't carry a team. They most certainly can. It helps when you have a guy challenging to hit .400, a decent back-of-the-rotation, a good bullpen, and a decent overall lineup. *Yeah, and before I get jumped all over, having people say "so you'd rather have the Twins team?", no, I'm not saying that. First off, I was making an off-hand comparison between the Twins and the D-Backs, not the Sox. Second off -- as much as I love Mark Buehrle and Jose Contreras -- neither are going to touch Randy Johnson's 184 ERA+ from that year (not to mention his 372 strikeouts). Heck, I doubt either get to Curt Schilling's 154 ERA+. I don't think 2 pitchers can carry a team through the season (they had one of Batista's good years, which helped a lot). The playoffs, maybe. But not the 80-odd games left, especially not in this division. 92-70 isn't gonna cut it in the AL this year. The bigger worry is that the Twins have those two, and then they have Radke, who will throw better the 2nd half. Then out of Silva and Bonser, you just gotta hit on one. I'm thinking, maybe just hoping, that they're far enough out to make the point moot.

QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Jul 3, 2006 -> 11:27 PM) Let's be honest here. I never said that. I was implying that an avatar featuring Greg Walker with the words "WORTHLESS" was indicitive of the reactionary negativity that is growing here. Frankiensteiner then informed me his avatar was a sarcastic one and I retracted my statement concerning it. Jackie, please tell the full story before accusing me of anything. You said it was symptomatic of the negativity around here. And obviously you thought this thread was just part and parcel of the rest of the negativity, with that novel chicken little pic on the first page. So I don't see what you're trying to correct here. That you retracted it? Fine, but the point I'm trying to make is that you didn't bother to figure out if it was really symptomatic of anything before throwing it out.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jul 3, 2006 -> 10:33 PM) So you're tired of your posts being lumped with the rest of the overly-negative s*** yet you're generalizing the way that people are responding...I've read some of the responses too and a lot of them have been valid reasoning for being optimistic and not just "I'm tired of it so stfu"... There's just so many more reasons to be optimistic with this team and I agree with a lot of the other sentiments that have been expressed in terms of wanting to just enjoy this team instead of always fearing the absolute worst and way over-exaggerating the bad. It's sad that some are already predicting playoff failure at this point in the season when it's clear that the team is in a good position yet wayy too early to make playoff predictions. And the majority seems to agree. (But this isn't all directed to you nor am I trying to call you out or anything) Anyways, it's a message board. If you post something on this type of forum, it's meant to be openly discussed, within the accepted parameters. Personally, it seems like some people like to make ridiculous, reactionary, negative doomsday predictions just so they can say "I told you so" if it happens. Sad to me. I'd rather just sit back and enjoy the ride... Uh, no. I didn't lump everyone in. I got into this when Ribbie said that one avy is basically the same as this thread. That's ridiculous. Then OTHER people brought up the defense that the game threads are negative. Again, what does that have to do with this? I have no problem with (for example) valponick's post, SEALgep's post, zach's. Those are fine. And if someone wants to dismiss it harshly, fine. But bring up a damn argument. But how anyone can not tolerate negativity but still think the 10 millionth skyisfalling quote is clever, is just beyond me. Wtf is so hard about not reading a thread called "White Sox may be in trouble" if seeing anything negative makes you fly off the handle? You talk about open discussion, but the whole point of all these tired chicken little posts is to just kill any discussion. It is pushing the site in a direction that a lot of posters don't want to go, cuz we've seen it elsewhere.

Well, no. Thornton has sucked? Or has sarcasm gotten so subtle it's swung all the way back around to serious?
-
Since it's started... I thought about starting a thread about Miggy's Chuck Norris-esque asswhupping ways with the Marlins. But then I figured it would turn into another Garcia-off. Just a hunch. Maybe tonight's the safest night to discuss it, though. But I am glad to see Olivo putting it together at the plate. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Garland, just has to keep the ball down. His gb/fb ratio is still totally out of whack for him.

And the Mariners breathe a sigh of relief. Kazmir 1-hitting the BoSox. And their all star Josh Beckett.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jul 3, 2006 -> 07:47 PM) So some of you wanna state your opinions on a message board but don't want anyone to disagree even if your opinion is in the minority??? I can't tell if you're joking or not, so... No, and that's a pretty ridiculous way to summarize what I've been saying. What gets tired is not disagreement, but posting chicken little pics and stating how many games over .500 we are and telling people to stop being in the least bit negative about anything, for any reason, just b/c 'I'm tired of it.' It's often been said here -- if you don't want to read it, DON'T. There's no reason to post when you have nothing relevant to say, just to threadcrap. People aren't even paying attention to the post at all, they're just saying, 'Oh, it's negative, and I read something negative in the gamethread and that upset me so stfu.' That's a joke. And it's not "you" -- I haven't been negative at all about this team. But I read the op and I thought this way -- he's not being sensible about the Twins. They won't be THAT good. Someone had already said something like that, so no need to post it. But I've been stubbornly thinking the Tigers would fade since forever, so the reminder of what they'll need to do to hit 100 wins (not much) was interesting, a wake up. Now, I don't really agree with him on it. I think he's overlooking some things -- how many games the Sox and Tigers have left head-to-head, Kenny Rogers' patented 2nd half fade -- but I'd at least POST THE REASONS. Whatever. If you were joking, sorry, but you're usually funnier than that.
