QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Oct 16, 2005 -> 03:11 AM) I'm really getting sick of the announcers dwelling on the umpiring. At some point, they need to get over it. The Sox are making the plays and the Angels are not. In Joe Buck's defense (and you don't know how hard it is for me to defend him), he did stop and give the Sox credit for making all of the plays following the controversial calls. That quieted them down, at least for a few minutes. Especially the first part. I know eventually they mouthed the 'Sox made the plays' line, but after 15 minutes of shrilling themselves hoarse, I don't give them too much credit for that. It's become absurd. Why weren't the announcers screaming for catcher's interference before the commercial break? If it was so obvious, I'm sure they must have noticed it immediately, not just when they reviewed it to see what Finley was pointing about. Yeah, there were mistakes. Too many, absolutely. But catcher's interference is a difficult thing to notice, especially when the batter makes contact. And the play at second -- you're not often going to get that call when you're lunging across the bag like that. Often a pitch will look pretty good, but the catcher will have to move his mitt -- and the comment is merely, that you're not gonna get many calls on plays like that. But when you're diving at the throw on the steal and tagging someone on the back of the leg, it's 'another play added to the list'. Why are they so hungry to stain these wins? Even in a drubbing.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 14, 2005 -> 06:40 PM) He had a rep of being an asshole basically because of the way he plays the game, he was a leader with the Twins though as well. I love aj, I hope he's around for a long, long time. He certainly had a reputation for getting on the other team's nerves. I know there were some times when Sox announcers made comments beyond that just after he left the Twins. You may have better knowledge. Anyway, it has less than nothing to do with this play. 'What a jerk, to try to take first.' Huh? It's better to write a nothing, fluff column than some non sequiter like that.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 14, 2005 -> 05:30 PM) Out here for Grad school @ Caltech. Geology. So if someone said your head is filled with rocks, would that be a compliment?

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Oct 14, 2005 -> 05:35 PM) And he does not even do good research. I do not remember AJ being divisive with the Twins, he was traded mostly because of Mauer, not because of any bad things that happened. He didnt get the rap until San Fran, and it was mostly because of Tomko. SB Well... No, he did have something of a rep before the Giants. It doesn't matter now, and it's got nothing to do with that play...I'm just sayin.

I don't think this has been posted yet, apologies if so. Foxsports has an article w/ some quotes from Eddings, also this: Take it fwiw. So apparently, he should call out "No catch", but isn't required to. There's not much else in the article. Eddings says he only wishes he had "sold it" better. And he's got police escorts. Tonight's gonna be pretty interesting. Edit: Linky, if interested.

QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Oct 13, 2005 -> 10:14 PM) Going back to the other thread on this topic, the one Krush started, it looks in that website like AJ sees the hand gesture for the dropped ball right before running. . .

QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 13, 2005 -> 01:59 PM) Is this the America we want to live in? The firefighters put it out once. I guess this is the difference between the America ideal. Neighbors helping neighbors through a crisis use to be the standard of American behavior. Now it's f*** you, too bad, we're not helping because you didn't pay $25. I find it sad. Volunteer fire departments use to be run as a community, with the residents helping each other. Some community members contributed more, some less or not at all, but everyone was helped. Another example of America pulling apart instead of pulling together. Re: the "some...contributed more, some less" -- The guy obviously has $25. It's not like he couldn't contribute, he just chose not to. Which is to say, he chose not to help his neighbors. Quid pro quo is fine and good, but there's no obligation to help someone who only looks out for his own quid. Might as well demand that everyone split the cost for this guy just because he doesn't feel like paying. In which case, why would anyone pay? These firefighters from another town were willing to go to his house just to make sure everyone was safe, apparently without any guarantee that their own costs would be covered. I don't know how anyone could demand more of them; if his record collection burns, tough s***.

AND THATS A WHITE SOX PLAYOFF WINNER

QUOTE(SoxFanForever @ Oct 13, 2005 -> 08:15 AM) I still love the hanging pitch by Escobar LOL Obviously Sciosia has to argue that call, but I don't understand why he kept at it so long. There's virtually no chance the call's gonna change, and meanwhile, your players are milling about, getting worked up. Why not just argue it for a minute, then get the ball back into Escobar's hand quick? He was nasty last night; he made Iguchi look foolish. -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Oct 13, 2005 -> 03:15 PM) I heard Harold Reynolds say this morning the he uses that fist pump for strike one, strike two and strike three. That is his strike call, not an out call. What he should have done with Molina was pump for strike, then call or punch him out. He didn't do, but I don't know why. The point is that is his swinging STRIKE mechanism. I thought the tag of Molina was pretty quick, and there was always some delay between the arm out no-contact signal and the strike call, so it seems plausible that he was just calling the strike then, and verbally called him out. Okay, I have read the thread , and I understand that an umpire could use the fist for strikes one and two, but only for out on strike three -- but that would be a pretty confusing system. I guess we'll have a few video essays by this evening, anyway.

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Oct 13, 2005 -> 12:06 AM) Good point but some our guys still didn't even get the bunt down so what did it matter where Figgins was? QUOTE(whitesoxmanager @ Oct 13, 2005 -> 12:07 AM) when you have a slap hitter up like pods and chone is 8 ft from the plate? hmmmmm....i let em rip his head off! WTF. no more outmanaging a shortstop by a catcher please! Yup, I'm just saying, they have to be willing to pull it back and take a cut if the Angels charge like yesterday. They just kept trying to bunt, no matter how close he was. -

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Oct 13, 2005 -> 12:04 AM) Ozzie used my advice from last night. He had all of our guys practice bunting. Podsednik laid down 70+ sac bunts in practice. Did you advise him to put a Chone Figgins cutout 8 feet from the plate? -
QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Oct 12, 2005 -> 03:25 AM) Let's face it, if we were going to win the World Series, we weren't going to go undefeated, that's just practically impossible. Tomorrow should be a better performance. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Oct 12, 2005 -> 01:53 PM) In a 7 game series in the ALCS, did everyone really expect us to win every game? Noone's expecting us to win every game. In fact, that's exactly what I'm worried about. Even if you execute well, there's a good chance the other team'll beat you once or twice. They're in the playoffs for a reason, after all. And if the Angels had won because they got a few more hits like Kennedy's on the hit and run (a beautiful job of hitting, on a really nice pitch), this loss wouldn't bother me at all. It's running Pods when he's been totally unable to steal for months, running AJ (whatever happened), silly bunting executed badly, and Contreras going for the dp instead of going home. You can afford to get beat, you will get beat, but you can't afford to give 'em away.

QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Oct 7, 2005 -> 04:35 PM) So, essentially, it's highly industrialized and developed nations against 3rd world countries (and the US)? No, it's all industrialized (at least the scatters are mostly OECD countries). But who calls "hey, I correlated some s***" a study? This can't be taken seriously.

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Oct 7, 2005 -> 06:47 PM) The NBA, Bulls should force Curry to sign a waiver if he wants to play with out a DNA test. The pertinent sections should say that both the NBA and Bulls did not want to let Curry play with out proper medical exams, and that the only reason they are allowing Curry to play is because it is his own health he is putting in jeapordy. Also include that the NBA and Bulls will have no liability should anything occur and that Curry and his estate will get 0. When placed in such a corner, that he can have a $5mil contract with 0 guarantee, versus the $200k-$400k per year for 20-40, it will be hard to turn down the guaranteed money. It sounds like Curry would happily sign such a waiver, though. It sounds as if he wants the guaranteed contract, not that his family wants to be in a position to sue the Bulls or the NBA. And that doesn't bother me, even though I'd think it'd bother his family; he knows better than I do what that risk is worth to him. The guaranteed money that the Bulls are (were?) offering, as much as it is, is worth a lot less than a long-term contract. I'm not saying it's the right choice, but it's not that hard to understand why he's doing this. -

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Oct 7, 2005 -> 06:27 PM) The DNA test is part of the qualifying offer the Bulls made. If it were to be rescinded (the Knicks deal) than Curry would sign the qualifying offer and than take the Bulls to an arbitrator saying that that clause in the contract is a violation of his rights. Ah, so. Thanks for the clarification. -

I don't have more insight, I'm just spitballing. $5.4 mil is great value if Curry's on the roster. Unless you're very sure that Curry won't play most of the year, it seems like a good value. Even though it's possible he won't play, it seems up in the air now. And since the contract expires at the end of the year, it's not much of a risk. Anyway, you'll be able to do your own physical before the contract is finalized, I believe, so you can check for yourself whatever you want to know about his heart. -

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Oct 7, 2005 -> 05:57 PM) The Bulls aren't going to let him get on the court without the test. I really doubt they will give him $5 million just to hang out at home, especially after the bad feelings Paxson had about the whole situation. f*** Curry, let him sue his agent, yet another scumbag more concerned about cash than the person. Well, to take that position they have to rescind the qualifying offer, right? And wouldn't Curry then become an UFA? I can't see them doing that, either. -

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Oct 7, 2005 -> 05:49 PM) If he failed the Knicks physical you can take it to the bank he isn't going to be playing for the Bulls this season without the DNA test. He could be done. I thought there was the possibility that he could just sign the qualifying offer for one year, and the DNA test was a prereq for a long-term deal only. No? -
The only part of the play that could have possibly been jitters was messing up the barehanded grab. I don't see any way you can say his kicking the ball was b/c of nerves.
