QUOTE(Texsox @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 12:47 AM) No s***, sherlock Takes one to know one.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 12:41 AM) Or it could be that motocross accident too... :rolly: I'll keep thinking of it my way, thank you very much. He got injured crashing into a wall earlier in his career, and it was a constant concern, so that's what I associated it with. But, as you like it.

You guys were rough on Show, and now Dybber. You think your you-know-what doesn't stink.

QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 12:31 AM) Isn't Crash Rowand? Yes. Shame on you guys... (For the all-out, willing-to-crash-into-the-wall way he plays cf.)

After what he did to Holyfield, I'd guess gay porn's out of the question.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 09:30 PM) Perhaps it's about wanting/getting more on the open market. or... perhaps... He'll be getting the heck out of Pittsburgh. He's made a big deal about wanting to stay in Pittsburgh, and he's said to everyone who'll listen that he'd like to sign a long-term deal w/ the Pirates. (Look at the article -- he's kissing everyone's ass.) It could be a huge ploy, I don't know. But I'd be shocked if he doesn't get a $5 mil (avg) offer for more than 1 year. He's nothing spectacular, but after last offseason, the value of a dependable, perfectly average 200 innings looks to be at least that. Consider that El Duque got $4 mil per, and he's a HUGE durability risk.

QUOTE(3E8 @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 09:14 PM) Well it's actually a 4.95 team or 4.5 player '06 option. Probably he will exersice that, I don't see anyone giving him more in FA but who knows. He's already said he'll turn down those options. The team option requires his consent too. From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, here. Imo he'll get more than that, and he'll certainly get that plus more years.

QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 03:19 PM) I agree 100% with this. I could go on in a lengthy diatribe how I think the father in th Yates case needed to be held accountable as well, but I am already pissed off enough about other things that I don't want to get into a heated argument here. Don't expect an argument from me.

Noone really knows enough to be certain, but I wonder how much mental illness played into this. The newspaper accounts make it sound as though she had a fight with mommy and got angry, so she decided to make as big a mess as possible. (Btw, 70 mph into a stopped car and she lives -- how does that happen?) I can't find it in my heart to hate someone who's clearly lost her mind, like Andrea Yates. But from what I've heard already, she just sounds self-involved, and I can blame someone for that.

Rob Neyer wrote a convenient little article, a transactions primer, a few years back, in case you want to know more.

Fox broadcasts are consistently awful -- actually, every aspect of their coverage is. It's sad but true that the best broadcaster they've had in years is Al Leiter. I don't know why national baseball broadcasts are so bad, ESPN included. I would always rather listen to the opposing team's announcers than any national team working today.

QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Jul 16, 2005 -> 03:36 PM) 10 day contract? What is this the NBA? In any case, it's fun to watch the Twinkies struggle. Well, it's not a 10-day contract. I guess they just announced/leaked that if he's no good after 10 days they'll cut him like the M's did. (Btw, any link to a story on this?) I'd guess the name of the ptbnl depends on whether or not he sticks -- ???

Older is better than Tim Redding. It's desperation mode -- when Redding starts and Darrell May is the first guy out of the pen (not surprisingly, after 1, count 'em, 1 ip), you suck so bad that this is a no-brainer type of move. As bad as Leiter's been, at least he was good just last year. And however many games he'll pitch in Yankee stadium, it's some help switching from a bad righty to a bad lefty. Well, a f'n atrocious righty to a bad lefty, but you get the point. What're the odds Kevin Appier's whistling happily and dusting his spikes as we speak?

Great exchange in the "Woman Grows Penis" thread: QUOTE(zach23 @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 07:36 PM) Everyone knows about the Clitoris, it is a great bar down on Wacker. It is upstairs from the G-Spot club. The place is owned by a guy named Hyman. QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 07:40 PM) Are you sure? I thought Hymen went broke? QUOTE(zach23 @ Jul 14, 2005 -> 07:42 PM) Maybe he owned the G-Spot club then, because a lot of people claim that place doesn't exist. Snappy.

Okay, a dumb question here. What kind of injury does Gload have, exactly? The Sox want him to recover so he can play the outfield. Okay -- so why is he playing at all? What sort of injury recovers better through playing 1b than through rest? Obviously there's less risk of injury at first (he reinjured himself on a throw, right?) -- but you'd think the risk would still be pretty high. Still gotta make cutoff plays, etc.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 02:59 PM) 1 game a decent backup does not make O wise Yoda, your knowledge is indeed inscrutable. And nearly incomprehensible.

When a $200 mil+ payroll has to rely on Tim Redding as a 3rd starter, that's money well spent.

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 12:22 AM) AJ = Royce If that were true, he'd start hitting right now. -
Al Leiter gets designated for assignment. Pretty amazing how quickly it can fall apart on you, no matter how consistent you've been.

QUOTE(DukeNukeEm @ Jul 13, 2005 -> 11:54 PM) What will he play? 3B? Probably, but if he thinks he'll play or bat in front of Miggy Tejada his best friend is crack. He wouldn't dream of hitting in the middle of the order. Cuz that's Sammy's spot. Damn. I was going position by position, trying to figure out who had the better lineup. I still had some hope w/ ARod on the US team, but ARod+Pujols+Tejada+Vlad? Wowza. -
It's crucial that all us Sox fans keep our collective chin up, don't get spoiled. I don't think the Sox can keep this pace up. 110 wins would be great, but... But all this proves is that every win, every damn game counts exactly the same. I'm so happy about this season, I'm annoying even my non-baseball friends, and that's a good sign. I've been around for the playoffs in 1983, 1993, and 2000. And I'm more optimistic now than ever before. HOLD THIS LEAD! Y'all know that I think Neyer's a good writer generally -- but I can't wait to see him eat his words about Mark Buehrle. End this drought and pitch us all to a series Mark!

At least the Trib's been reading soxtalk.

I hope Jon's the last pitcher out. That's not a knock, he's on the AS team, he's got the honor already. I'd rather he doesn't work any more than necessary.

Odd, but interesting. NYT link. O'Connor's announced her retirement and Rehnquist has said nothing, yet Arlen Specter has proposed O'Connor -- did I stutter? -- for the Chief Justice position. If nothing else, it reinforces how highly Specter thinks of O'Connor, which is not good news for hardline conservatives.

QUOTE(BlackBetsy @ Jul 11, 2005 -> 11:10 PM) IIRC correctly, the Commissioner's office will have to approve this if over $1 million is going to the Twins. The Commissioner's Office may reject it if the prospect isn't good enough or if they think too much money is going to Minnesota as part of the deal. I can't imagine he'd veto it. I think that's only a serious issue when money is being sent to cover future years' salaries. Considering the Twins would have just released him after a week more (or so -- not sure when he was designated), getting anything is good enough. Edit: Ack, M's would have released him.
