  1. QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Jul 6, 2005 -> 01:39 AM) Why... So T-Ball Garcia can give up the lead again... besides the Sox have never been able to hit this guy. Unless the pen comes early the game is over. Are you subbing for fathom today, or what?
  2. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 6, 2005 -> 01:10 AM) But he'll hit 20 more useless homers this year and sign a fat deal with another team. There have been many times this year when this team wouldn't have won without PK's homers. They're useless unless you prefer winning.
  3. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2005 -> 12:05 AM) There's a very good reason for why they decided to do it this way...as a lobbying event, rather than as a fundraiser as was done with Live Aid in the 80's. Live Aid raised money on the order of $250 million as a fundraiser. That money is chewed up by the debts held by African countries in a matter of a few DAYS. In other words...yeah they could have done it as a fundraiser, but even if they dumped a full billion dollars of aid into that nation, it'd be merely a drop in the bucket, but if they can convince the G8 nations to begin offering genuine African Debt relieft, they can have an impact literally 1000's of times greater. They don't even have to convince them to drop all the debt; even if a small portion is just knocked off because of this publicity, then it will be like giving $100's of millions of dollars to Africa per year, every year. If the campaign came fully to fruition, it would be like generating billions of dollars of aid PER YEAR. Your math is off a bit, although your heart is in the right place. Not literally 1000s of times greater. 1 bil*1000=1 tril, which would completely pay off the debt of all African nations, I'm almost certain. (The most extreme numbers I could find didn't exceed $500 billion.) And $100 mil per year, every year, isn't very much. In present value terms, that's worth about $2.5 bil, which is roughly the debt servicing per year for Africa. Paying the interest for a year isn't so hot. The G8 already agreed to $40 bil in debt relief, I think. I bet you see some moderate increase in that, but not cancellation. And of course it's just words at this point. Which doesn't bother me so much. Aid to Africa should be increased quite a bit, but personally, I don't think debt relief is the best way to deliver it. Jmho.
  4. He won most of his CYs in Atlanta, and except for the one year w/ the Cubs before he left, all his truly great years are there. Everyone remembers him as the pitcher that consistently fronted some of the best rotations of this era. With the Cubs, he's been a consistent contributor, a solid sp, but not much more (that one pre-Atl year excepted, again). No doubt at all he goes in as a Brave.
  5. I'm no expert on energy, but I'm pretty sure Unocal is not enough to establish a stranglehold over the US oil supply. China's not going to be able to dictate a price to us. They think the company's worth more than anyone in the US does. What's the big deal? The thing is, they are going to buy tons of resources in the US no matter what, because of their huge trade surplus. If it's not Unocal, it'll be something else. That's not because they have some ploy, it's just accounting -- we're buying lots of stuff from China, they have to spend the dollars somehow (and they've got plenty of government debt already). The ONLY way this'll change is if Americans start saving more. It's all our fault that we own less wealth. No investment, no wealth. Pretty simple.
  6. QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Jul 4, 2005 -> 03:54 AM) Jackie, I hear ya, and I truly believe that. I believe he didn't mean to include terrorists inhis planning. But he is a man that is careful with his words, more so that someone like Rove. Yet, those of a more liberal bent here seem to think that what Rove says it what he means to the letter, no room for 'what he meant'. However, WHATEVER Kofi meant, he is still a piece of s***. Well, on Iraq, I'm of a more liberal bent. And I meant that we've heard that sort of useless pontificating from the US as well as the UN. 'We have to get everyone involved.' Okay, how? 'Oh, we're working really really hard on that, it's nuanced, very very nuanced.' But the point is Annan did say "communities", it's not just something he "means". And anyway, even if he had said 'get everyone involved', how picky do you want to be? This is like calling Abraham Lincoln a piece of s*** for the Gettysburg address. "Government of the people, by the people, for the people? -- All the people? So you think serial hatchet murderers should be involved in the government, you pos, since you didn't exclude anyone."
  7. He says "all...communities". The (Iraqi) insurgents aren't a "community" unto themselves, they are rogue members of particular communities. What he's basically saying is that Sunnis, Kurds, Shia, women, etc must all have a voice and believe in their own importance. Which is just the same detailless drivel we've heard for the past year, but it's not an argument for a special Department of Terrorist Affairs in the new government.
  8. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Jul 4, 2005 -> 01:28 AM) As of right now- the whole Schmidt rumor has dimmed a bit. The Giants feel that they still are in the playoff hunt and Barry Bonds is expected to come back at the end of July. So unless the Giants extremely falter within the next 2 weeks- this trade wont happen I'm sceptical about the Schmidt rumor for other reasons, but I don't believe for a second that Bonds will be back by the end of July. All he's doing now is some exercises, he has yet to begin swinging a bat, and just a couple days ago he posted something on his website saying he had been set back by swelling in his knee. Even allowing for that miracle, they're 10 games back and they have crap for a rotation. And for a bullpen. The SF Giants are done for this year, and the most incompetent front office in the league would see that. Btw, in case I'm wrong and this Schmidt thing goes through, I sure hope they'll throw in Jerome Williams too.
  9. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jul 3, 2005 -> 10:23 PM) This is what I actually heard on Sporting News Radio. This is not just a made up rumor. If you want conformation, listen to Sporting News radio on line. They were close to a deal is what the Sporting News sports update said. It's being discussed in the trade thread. The fact that SF started Schmidt today makes it dubious. They can't be too close to a deal.
  10. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 3, 2005 -> 10:05 PM) Guys, everything is going to be ok, Kevin Walker is warming up. Thank you, Doctor Kevorkian!
  11. Now we start the rally! With Widger, and...Crede, and.................Ozuna.
  12. Oh crappy crap. Whenever Gameday takes a while to put the play up, you know it's gonna be bad.
  13. Yeah, I don't see any harm in pulling MB now. He's getting hit (uh-oh, and again...) and he's already rolled up over 100 pitches.
  14. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jul 3, 2005 -> 08:29 PM) Yea, being second best in the world at what you do really sucks. :rolly Actually he's 4th in the world, but he was ranked 2 at Wimbledon b/c of his success on grass the last couple years. But the point's good -- Roddick hardly sucks. Federer destroyed Hewitt (the world #2) just as easy. Federer is playing as noone has since Sampras at his very best. Even when the match was more or less decided, it was such a great show the way he was playing, I stayed glued to the tv. It was interesting comparing that to the women's final, which was fun in a different way. Inconsistent play, but hard fought and very close.
  15. QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Jul 3, 2005 -> 08:30 PM) Whats the deal with Oakland and annoying horns? Billy Beane is the Devil, after all.
  16. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 3, 2005 -> 07:58 PM) I know about as much about it as you guys do... Here's where I saw the rumor. Link. If true, whoa. But it would be strange to see that happen today. If a trade was close, you'd imagine they'd pull Schmidt from his start today. I think this is a little fishy. Never thought I'd see this anywhere.
  17. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 07:16 PM) Hopefully both top seeds hold. Federer vs. Roddick would be awesome. Or not. Federer crushes Roddick in straight sets. Not that it mattered -- Federer would have done that against anyone in this tournament. The announcers didn't seem too impressed w/ Roddick, but I thought Federer was just that good. Some of his returns had me staring at the tv agape.
  18. Fwiw, from the NYT, conservative groups are lining up to oppose Gonzales b/c he's not conservative enough. Andy Card met w/ a group of conservative lawyers (including Edwin Meese -- blast from the past, huh?) who warned him against nominating the Attorney General. Again, take it fwiw. Personally, I doubt this is very meaningful. Maybe an act of sorts -- 'If conservatives don't like him, then how bipartisan and uniternotadivider-y Bush must be to appoint him anyway', etc. Not that conservative groups would like him, but they know it will be difficult to avoid a filibuster fight w/ someone they'd prefer. And anyway, Bush (supposedly) is very close to him, and what can these groups really do to their lame duck president? We'll see. I think the White House could go either way, but jmho.
  19. QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Jul 2, 2005 -> 01:22 PM) ...and if you wanted to point out how big of a bust a deadline trade can be then look at the '03 Giants who went after THE big named pitcher that yr who was also rumored to be hurting, Ponson. Of course, he was actually hurting and sucked down the stretch for them and was bombed by the Marlins in his only playoff start. Ponson pitched fine down the stretch, 3.7 era and his usual k, bb rates. If you go by era+, his time w/ the Giants was the best stint of his ML career. He didn't pitch well in his one postseason start, but I don't know if "bombed" is right. There aren't any ML pitchers incapable of 4 er over 5 ip on a bad day. No walks, a few strikeouts -- bad, but not evidence of much of anything. Obviously, he's sucked ever since. But it's a bad example. Ponson did his job well and the prospects all petered out. If Ponson is the worst deadline deal you can come up w/, then trade trade trade Kenny! And Schmidt is a much different player anyway. If he gets right, he's a top 5 pitcher in all baseball. Noone could ever say that about Sidney Augustus Ponson Gloop.
  20. You think nightlighting as a wrestler would be embarrassing enough. Then you learn that he's 31 and has HIS MOM call him in sick. Put your junk in storage, man.
  21. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jul 2, 2005 -> 04:53 AM) How retarded is it that Frank won't see any action in this game? Due to make outs in the ninth, Rowand, Konerko, Everett. Should one or more of them fail to make an out, Dye and Pierzynski will be up next. Ozzie will not pinch hit for any of those 5. Agreed. Plus Uribe's spot would have been a great place to use him, have a good on-base guy to start off the inning, plug Ozuna in the next half inning.
  22. QUOTE(qwerty @ Jul 2, 2005 -> 04:34 AM) Are all the oakland fans from a freak show? Well, if you've ever watched Raiders games...
