5/24/05 Game Thread Sox@ L.A. Angels of Anaheim

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ May 25, 2005 -> 02:50 AM) He does that when he's hot too, that's just how he hits. It's akward but for the most part it'll work for him. Right now he's just in a funk, he'll get out of it though. I love Uribe, but he makes me Actually he makes everyone do that -- even opposing announcers laugh at his cuts. But he manages to hit anyway. I'm glad the Sox have him. -
QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ May 24, 2005 -> 04:42 PM) what do K's have to do with obp? Dunn has always had a great obp Yup. He could strike out 180 times, but walk 130 times, and end up w/ an obp close to .400. That guy is on the top of my freak hitters list.

QUOTE(mreye @ May 19, 2005 -> 05:05 PM) He sat on it, that's how. He sat on it and Drudge ran it. Same with Juanita Broderick. Haven't been around, so this is a bit late, but... Drudge's piece was in fact about Newsweek "suits" killing the story, not Isikoff. Isikoff wrote it up and wanted it to run, by all reports I've seen. A claim was made that this writer is only researching stories that make Dems look good and Repubs look bad, and that's clearly not true. He proved perfectly willing to embarrass Clinton -- so much so that some Dem harpies cried about his wanting to take down the Clinton presidency. If you want to find bias in the media, look elsewhere.

QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ May 19, 2005 -> 03:18 PM) ^^^^^^ Although, it did occur today that both the teams in the WS last year wore red. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. As per the selection being random, I don't know. But I think for this to be totally valid they should do it across ALL Olympic sports, team/single/etc. Heck, maybe even go for non-Olympic Sports like professional ones over here.... Then I would be FAAAAAAAAAAR more willing to accept I don't know either, just something mentioned in an article about this. But the researchers can't really control the uniforms, and I doubt most pro teams would be willing to randomize their unis in the name of science. If the jerseys really were assigned at random, that sounds like a pretty good trial. Less 'violent' sports might be an interesting test. Problem is the uniforms usually aren't dictated by officials in those.

QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ May 19, 2005 -> 03:07 PM) I can understand why Beane wants to dump Chavez salary and contract. He obviously wants to rebuild. And the best way to rebuild is -- dump 27 year old star players that you desperately wanted to sign a year or so back? Yes, I know the A's aren't the Yankees, but given his age and production, they signed him to a pretty good contract. Not a chance in hell they trade him.

QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ May 19, 2005 -> 02:43 PM) Funny, I didn't hear the much-more-newsworthy story of Saudi Arabia arresting 40 Christians for "trying to spread their poisonous religious beliefs." I wonder why that is... :rolly Is it more newsworthy? Is it unexpected? That doesn't surprise me very much. But I don't have a good idea at all what government interrogators do. So why DID this biased hack suddenly go conservative in the late 90s, huh?
-
QUOTE(Leonard Zelig @ May 19, 2005 -> 02:49 PM) ATTENTION TO THOSE WHO APPARENTLY DO NOT KNOW: Performance has nothing to do with the All-Star starters, it's who the voters select. I know, but the original poster was talking about who "we should have" in the game...

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ May 19, 2005 -> 02:44 PM) When did KW get Tejada and Harden? Yesterday, just before he swooped in to grab Chavez. Under the radar, baby. No, I understand what you mean, but "any dealings with Oakland players" does not just mean "any dealings of KW with Oakland players".
-
QUOTE(Leonard Zelig @ May 19, 2005 -> 02:45 PM) That's one crowded island.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 19, 2005 -> 02:42 PM) Not a chance. As it stands today, if anyone but Brian Roberts or Soriano starts, its a crime against humanity. And it would take a huge slide from Brian Roberts for that to change. He's THE story among position players this year. Soriano's been good, but he's still been nowhere close to Roberts. Edit: Just checked Soriano's numbers. Weren't they better earlier this year?
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 19, 2005 -> 02:39 PM) MB will make it if he continues to have the second most wins in the AL, and Gooch will get the Japanese vote. Iguchi's been great, but he really doesn't deserve to be the starter anyway.

Projection as in should have, or will have? Anyway, do we have any hitters who even have a case? Pods, I suppose -- but I'd have to check his competition. And it would be strange to have more than 2 or (maybe) 3 guys from one team on a staff. Not really anything to get angry about.

QUOTE(rafacosta @ May 19, 2005 -> 02:29 PM) Lol..it should be in green... Shhh... I was kinda hoping to see what kind of s*** I got w/o the green.

QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ May 19, 2005 -> 01:59 PM) And I thought there was no liberal bias in the major media outlets. What bothers me about this is that flushing pages of a book down the toilet doesn't fall into the category of prisoner torture or humiliation. As opposed to Abu Ghraib, it isn't a newsworthy story for a (relatively) clear-thinking American audience. I'm not saying that they didn't have the right to report it (IF it were true, and we're not even sure about that), but what was the point? The only purpose of the story was to incite anti-American sentiment in the not-so-clear thinking world of Islama-fascism. What does that accomplish, besides making our current administration look bad and putting our troops in even further harm? The point is just that it was news, and the reporters want stories. It wasn't calculated, this is just getting silly. How exactly did Isikoff's massive liberal commie pinko America-hating bias play into the Monica Lewinsky story? Which wing's vast conspiracy is the guy on?

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ May 19, 2005 -> 02:16 PM) Sorry, if Oak. gives up Chavez it will be for a s***load more than Cruddy and say Anderson. I'm also getting suspicious about any dealings with Oakland players, ahem Billy Botch and Jermaine Death ahem. What do they know about Chavez that we might not see? Not only would it take a ton more, they wouldn't do it AT ALL unless they knew something. I'd say it would have to be related to his injury last year -- if I didn't think this was the funniest load of complete bs that ever whipped up 3 pages on a message board. And of course Oakland players are no good. Rich Harden's obviously overrated and what's Miggy Tejada ever done?

QUOTE(AssHatSoxFan @ May 19, 2005 -> 12:37 PM) if the ball does not beat the runner to the base then he is safe from what i recall as an ump...therefore if there is a "tie" the ball did not beat the runner and hence he should be considered safe Actually, it sounds a little more like the opposite: (The runner is out if) "he fails to reach the next base before a fielder tags him or the base, after he has been forced to advance by reason of the batter becoming a runner." The runner has to reach the base "before" the tag. If it's an exact tie, that means he's not there before the tag, so it seems like a strict reading of the rules would say a tie goes to the fielders. -
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ May 19, 2005 -> 05:44 AM) This research is just plain dumb... im sorry but the color of your uniform doesnt make the team any better. Which is exactly their question -- obviously it doesn't make you any better, so why do red teams win more often? They they could have all the evidence in the world that red teams win more often, trillions of observations (other things equal), and you still wouldn't believe it? I find that hard to understand. I think I'll believe even the wackiest ideas, if you just pile up enough evidence beside them.

It probably just depends on who's doing the teaching, it's not an official thing. Like many people here, I was told just to call him out. -
QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ May 18, 2005 -> 10:39 PM) Would I be a huge dork if I said that I wanted to see their data and statistics? And if I pointed out the obvious, correlation does not equal causation? Yes, and... ...I read that the uniform colors in the Olympics are randomly assigned, so it really does sound like causation.

Some British researchers have found that wearing red unis significantly increases men's probability of winning a close match/game/whatever, here's the article. I think they're comparing it to blue, mostly, so it doesn't change my mind that black is the real asswhupping color. At least the Royals now know what the first change has to be. (Dunno if this should go here or SLaP, but it is sports related. Feel free to move it.)

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 18, 2005 -> 07:48 PM) The record is 6 by Hank Majeski of the Philly A's in 1948 Nuts. I thought the O's broadcasters were saying something about this when Brian Roberts was hitting against us. Thanks for setting me straight. -

Isn't 4 the ML record for doubles in a game, or am I off on that? -
QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ May 18, 2005 -> 06:43 PM) Only if they're big Michael Moore fans. .. Somehow I don't think they see eye to eye on pork products.
