  1. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 06:00 PM) The biggest hurdle to eithe an African or a Latin American Pope was that it would have likely ushered in some much needed serious debate on the Catholic stance against birth control in general and condoms in particular. Instead, tens of thousands of people continue to die from AIDS in Africa every year for lack of education or access to condoms. I can appreciate religious orthodoxy as much as anyone and yes there are core tenets at the heart of the Catholic faith, but this is a glaring example of how the Church remains hopefully and fattally out of step with the realities of modern life. It's better to transmit HIV, get AIDS and die than to use a condom in the eyes of the Catholic God? Nice to get this in, but I very much doubt that had anything to do with the choice. Most of the African and Latin American cardinals are conservative and unlikely to consider any change on condoms/birth control/sex doctrine.
  2. Wikipedia's already updated their bio of Benedict XV with a reference to Benedict XVI. Wow, that's fast!
  3. QUOTE(winodj @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 05:48 PM) Actually, I'd say the statement is very much Status Quo. I guess the pendulum hasn't stopped swinging away from Vatican II yet. I don't know -- from what I've heard, I'd expect more centralization than in the past. I would agree with the second part -- this is likely to be more conservative than JPII. I never meant that he would moderate the Church.
  4. QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 05:42 PM) Just out of curiosity, how many non-Caucasian Popes have there been? I can't think of any off the top of my head, but I could be wrong. I really thought that they might've elected an African Pope, given the extent of povery and disease that's been ravaging that continent. That may have also helped to stem the growth of radical Islam in northern and northeastern Africa. Many of the top candidates from developing countries were very young, the exception being Arinze at 72. But that may still be younger than they wanted. With Ratzinger, they have chosen someone who will put things in order inside the Church while they decide on a direction, but who won't dominate the Church for decades.
  5. QUOTE(winodj @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 05:38 PM) I think its safe to say that this Pope will not be as much of a window to the rest of the world as JPII was. I think they were looking for a Pope who would, for a little while, act as a caretaker and take care of bidness at home as opposed to riding in the Popemobile a lot. You're right, he'll be less of an ambassador for the Church. But I would say he's more than a caretaker -- inside the Church there will be a difference from JPII, and the cardinals have certainly made a statement with the selection, not "status quo".
  6. How long before all the American Catholic groups go berserk? 3...2...1...
  7. Oh, I don't care. It looks like Justin Miller won, that's fine. Ware's projected around #10 in some mock drafts now, so it's just odd that he's not getting any attention.
  8. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 11:34 PM) The question is, how long will it take someone to blame a Sox fan? Or how long will it take for a Sox fan to take credit? Gotta figure it's a Sox fan, b/c how could anyone not hear someone that f'n annoying?
  9. And the offerings of network tv continue to dwindle. This just sucks.
  10. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 07:34 PM) If Ware was still on the board, the Chargers would be peeing their collective pants. It'd be him fellas. Maybe soxtalk is just kinda hoping Ware falls to the Bears in the 2nd round, b/c it doesn't look like he's picking up any momentum here either.
  11. This is enough of Ozzie running his mouth, it's the 2nd year straight. I think Ozzie's got to win this year and stop allowing this crap to pour out of his mouth. If he can't do that, I think it's time for him to go. In that sense, I think Steff is right -- I wouldn't fire him immediately, but I hope the clock is ticking.
  12. Dye'll be fine hitting-wise, but he doesn't seem to be as good a hitter as Everett anymore. And Dye's a good rf -- I never said the 2 compared in terms of defense. Still, Everett has been an outfielder most of his career, I don't think he's suddenly lost all ability to play left, the easiest position. Especially not after one single play. Sometimes you sacrifice something in the field for the bat. If you bench Everett after Thomas comes back, or go with a platoon at dh, you're leaving too much talent wasting on the bench, imo.
  13. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 06:58 PM) He had 1 ball hit to him this season in LF and look what happened. He is one of the better DHs in baseball. His defense is below horrible. Stuff happens. I'm not saying he'll be a good defensive lf, but it's the least demanding position, he'll be adequate.
  14. QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 06:52 PM) When Everett played centerfield, I remember hearing about how experts had never seen a player turn more routine singles into triples due to terrible range and instincts. Everett has absolutely no range in the outfield...he even helped us win a game in Montreal last year when he was in the outfield for the Expos. I like Everett as a hitter, but he should never play the outfield again. He makes Timo look like a gold-glover out there. Cf was not a good scene for Carl. Rf's not great either, but at least you get his bat in there. But lf, I don't mind Carl in left. That's just about his speed.
  15. They'd love a tackle, but since Barnes is gone, other, Demarcus Ware.
  16. QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 05:43 PM) Ironically, Icelandic officials are now looking into prosecuting Fischer for hate speech. I love it. Although to some extent, I wonder if he's really all there.
  17. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 06:09 PM) Like I stated before, both he and Frank were wrong. Neither should have said what they said to the press. Okay. Well that's strange, since just a minute ago you were defending Ozzie speaking out to reporters, saying that it was merely "saying it even louder. This is his team...He told it the way it is and the type of attitude he wants from his team." Well, so we agree that Ozzie was an ass for saying this to the press. I still disagree on Frank, but at least we agree on one thing.
  18. QUOTE(Steff @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 06:03 PM) I think his point is why tell the media this stuff (about attitude problems) at all..? Jackie just slap me if I'm assuming wrong. Nah, I assume you understand what I'm saying. And assuming.
  19. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 06:01 PM) So are you saying that you know for a fact that he didn't talk to his players about it before he went to the press? For that matter directly after? How about just to Frank? If you don't know for a fact then it is an assumption. Um, no. I'm not assuming anything at all. Because it doesn't matter. Suppose we assume exactly the opposite of what you assume I'm assuming. (I assume you follow?) So we assume that Ozzie told his players first. That makes it necessary to go moan to reporters after? That's somehow productive? You said he wants to communicate to his players. Fine, tell THEM.
  20. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 05:53 PM) How do you know he didn't do both? Your assumption is that he didn't. My assumption is that he did. Possibly eveen before he spoke to the reporters. My "assumption", my foot. If he wanted to tell his players, he could have done so without whining to reporters, regardless.
  21. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 05:49 PM) No, I don't believe part of being the boss is to be the bigger person. I think he is setting an example and taking a leadership role. He will not stand for a selfish type of attitude. He wants to play team baseball and could care less about individual statistics. That is a big stance to take and a big part of being a leader. It is his team. The team will play the way he wants. The attitude will be of team baseball. There is a lot of leadership in that. And he wants a literate team, so instead of telling them directly, he expects them to simply read his comments in the paper. I guess.
  22. If Ozzie had limited himself to the comments where he said, 'I make the lineup, not Frank, and I still don't know how we're going to work him in, we'll see what the situation is at that point' (rough summary, I'm not trying to quote) -- this wouldn't be a big deal. Frank knows that, and has said as much in other interviews (when he talks about having to sit, and says that the team has "interchangeable parts"). But when he lays into a guy who's been saying all the right things, going off on what an awful teammate he was years ago, especially before last season (that is, when Ozzie wasn't even in the f'n clubhouse) -- then he has gone way over the line, for no other reason than to make a point of how important he is. The only selfish person in all of this is Ozzie. He should stfu, but it's clear by now that it'll never happen.
  23. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 04:20 PM) Everytime there is a situation like this, it seems like Kenny is the one who gets proven right. Ozzie even says that he's talked to Frank (the Herald article quotes him saying "I talked to him. I said listen, 'I'm not being a bad man...'"), so communication doesn't seem to be a problem.
  24. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 04:14 PM) Exactly. That is what the article says. Ozzie is just going to step up and say this without being asked anything? Do you really believe that? From the Tribune? You think what Frank said is just fine? He don't see it full of selfishness? I clearly see it. He seems like you have a lot of animosity towards Ozzie. I don't think this situation has pushed you in that direction. Do you not think he is a good manager? I am not defending either one of them. I am just stating that neither are more at fault than the other. The both of them either need to learn how to communicate with the press or shut their traps. Hey, maybe the Tribune just made up the quotes too. Let's see what Frank's been saying: Yeah, he's really being an ass. Frank didn't say 'I better be hitting every day, or else' -- he even said that he would have to sit once in a while. He was just saying how the lineup might look when he was in it. What's the problem with that? Should he have said, 'Gee, I dunno, maybe Oz'll want to play me in center, you'll have to ask him'? We all know that Frank is DHing when he's in the lineup, what's the big problem. Hell, he even gave a long spiel about "team baseball" and "interchangeable parts", Ozzie should have felt his ego was stroked enough. And maybe, just maybe should not have tried to embarass one of his best hitters in the press.
