QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Apr 14, 2005 -> 02:25 AM) Although Konerko started out a catcher, I doubt he is the White Sox emergency catcher. Guys who don't know what they're doing can easily get hurt back there, and I doubt the White Sox would want to risk one of their best offensive players for this. I have never understood the philosophy about saving the back up catcher, but a lot of managers use it. I agree with the earlier post that the odds of Widger getting hurt enough to leave the game is very small. I think he probably remembers enough to not get hurt, which is all I'd really expect. I thought he was the emergency catcher, but I could be wrong on that. If not PK, who?

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Apr 14, 2005 -> 02:19 AM) I hope you're kidding. Why? He would catch the ball, have no chance whatsoever at throwing someone out at 2nd (I wouldn't even expect him to throw), but he might still get someone trying to steal 3rd. He came up as a catcher, it doesn't ALL go away.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Apr 14, 2005 -> 02:13 AM) Its a good point, but I'm sure Ozzie's thinking is he doesn't want to use Widger unless AJ gets hurt, because if he goes down, then a non catcher will have to catch. I wish he used the same philosophy with the bullpen the first loss of the season. The Sox would be 7-1 right now. Well, that's just a bad philosophy (as far as catching goes). Sorry, but the odds of that are very small, and Konerko at catcher would be bad, but not a disaster.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Apr 14, 2005 -> 02:11 AM) I ran the Win percentage stuff again for today's game -- I'll make a pretty graph later tonight. --- Here's the data, not that you care. Actually -- I think this is pretty neat stuff. This method is based (I think) on the calculations done a couple years ago by some Yale economics professor. I recall reading an article on this a little while back, and thinking it was a great idea, and not too difficult to reproduce when you organize the data. So I'm curious about it, now that someone's taken the time to work it all up. -

Ohhhhhhhh.... Jose scares me. I'm glad he gathered it all in, but boy, we need more out of him. Anyway, great win, I want a darn sweep already! -
Good Lord, let this die.

There aren't many people here, either. Where's the enthusiasm after a great game on Monday? -

A little off-topic, but I loved the line, "He isn't Catholic, but he isn't dumb either." Reminded me of Royko for some reason. -
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Apr 13, 2005 -> 03:13 AM) Feel free to throw a grammar class my way. I don't take criticism the wrong way. Please edit my posts and let me know what is wrong with them. I would greatly appreciate the criticism. If you want you can send me a personal message and we can go over them together. Thank you for your help. Your opinion is greatly appreciated, however I think there is a huge difference between that mistake and not knowing the difference between their and there. Typos are understandable. Not knowing the difference between there and their while claiming to be in an advanced English class is not. That is IMHO. I have no interest in correcting grammar mistakes, so no, thank you. I don't agree that their/there is much different than other mistakes. It's a spelling error, just like "definately". (After all, the writer clearly understood each meaning.) Reading a sentence that throws together verb tenses in the wrong way is more jarring to me. Btw, it's not true that the two words have different sounds. At least, it's not generally true (you might pronounce them differently) -- most dictionaries list identical accepted pronunciations. Just saying. (That is a fragment, for which I apologize profusely.) If this issue gets raised every time the two words are switched it's going to get real old, real fast. Now back to FullHouseTalk...

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Apr 13, 2005 -> 02:20 AM) Dodgers-Brazoban Diamondbacks-Lyon Red Sox-Foulke Foulke's wasn't a BS, technically -- the Red Sox were behind by a run when he entered the game. The other 2 did blow a save, but I wouldn't call either one a "big name closer" yet (especially Lyon). Btw, I'm stoked -- I spelled Yhency Brazoban correctly on my first try. You can begin exalting me now.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Apr 13, 2005 -> 03:01 AM) Good catch again. There're more. Unless you're quite certain that your grammar is perfect, you should lay off a bit, imho.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 11:49 PM) WOW! You have proven my point. What a very scary thought indeed. Someone that does not know the difference between their and there is not only passing by, but in ADVANCED English in high school! What does that say for the rest of the kids? When the advanced students don't know the difference between their and there what the hell do the regular students know and learn? Here is a thought: I highly doubt that you typed their wrong twice on accident instead of there. First of all the words don't even sound the same when you are speaking them. An advanced English high school student would definately not make such a mistake. He definitely would not.

QUOTE(Tannerfan @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 10:44 PM) You lack vision. Okay, I think you're utterly wrong on this but still believe this is one of the funnier responses I've seen. So odd it's funny.

Sometimes I can't tell if we're more excited about 2005, or bitter about 2004. I'm tired of the scapegoating. This season would be a lot more enjoyable if Ozzie and KW would just let it go. I for one would be perfectly happy if I never see that.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 01:58 PM) I think that's the plan. (Shhh! It's a top secret plan.) Sheesh, I get jumped on for one sentence of ra-ra. Got a sarcasm jones today?

The pitching has been amazing so far -- as of this morning, we have the best era in the American League, and we're 3rd in strikeouts and whip. So far it's been very encouraging, let's just keep piling on the wins.

The Ravens are on the clock
jackie hayes replied to knightni's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I'll go with Barnes out of these, they need a young tackle -- although I'd put a wide receiver on the list of choices. Even with Derrick Mason, they need help bad at that position. Roddy White seems like a reach, but...stranger things have happened. (Though I'd probably still take Barnes if White were there -- Ravens are very much a 'best available' team.) -
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 11, 2005 -> 04:50 AM) I'd say the Muts signing Kris Benson to the deal they did was just as dumb of a move. Same with the Dodgers giving JD Drew big bucks instead of Adrian Beltre. Piss poor. They're all bad, but I don't think they compare with Milton -- who got more money than Benson to pitch as an extreme flyball pitcher in a hr park. Benson's about average, and he got less, and Drew is a monster talent when he's healthy. I don't see anything good about Milton. But as long as the Reds stay undefeated I'm sure it won't be a problem.

QUOTE(Leonard Zelig @ Apr 11, 2005 -> 05:23 AM) Seems silly to try to pick Cy Young or any other award like that after one week to me. You're all wet. Rodrigo Lopez and Josh Beckett have officially won the 2005 Cy Young awards. Congratulations to both. I am confident they will honor the title just as Jason Stanford and Al Leiter did in 2004. Also if Pat Burrell and Eric Hinske could claim their MVP trophies as soon as possible, we'd much appreciate it. -
QUOTE(SouthSideScraper @ Apr 11, 2005 -> 03:39 AM) Let's not forget the rest of the team. Thank you. Two losses, and each time someone is fingered as the One Traitor Who Lost The Game Entirely On His Own. Shingo, Joe, go to your potter's field now. For every obvious mistake, there are a dozen less noticeable ones -- a hanging curve, a missed hanging curve, careless positioning. This is the worst kind of reaction, and I hope it's not becoming a trend -- there's nothing more pathetic than Red Sox fans who blamed Bill Buckner for years, or the Cubs fans (and players...) after the 2003 NLCS. Obviously this is not of that magnitude (yet...), but it's the same mindset: 'That one guy, it's all on him.' Please.

QUOTE(ottawa_sox @ Apr 9, 2005 -> 03:35 AM) So far the starting staff has given up 4 runs in 27 innings. ERA = 1.33 And this is the key -- our starting pitching was the downfall last year. If Hernandez makes it strong, it's playoffs for us. Keep going, Sox!!!! -
QUOTE(Spiff @ Apr 8, 2005 -> 05:49 AM) Rick White loads the bases bottom 12 in San Diego, then walks Nady to lose the game. 1-0 Padres final. Pirates are now 0-3. Maybe he was tired from shutting 'em down for 11 innings, ever think of that?

Jugg, jmho, but I think you should put down your stat horn until you have some concept of 'sample size' and 'significant difference'.
