  1. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 03:37 PM) I thought the Seahawks were close to signing Sharper? From the articles I can find, he's going to visit the Seahawks but is more interested in playing for a coach he knows, especially Marvin Lewis or Jack Del Rio.
  2. From Rotoworld, Wilson Valdez is going to be the Mariners' opening day ss w/ both Pokey and Jose Lopez hurting.
  3. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 09:50 PM) Sori for Contreras isn't a bad suggestion. It doesn;t fit now but sometimes these things work themselves out. I was a big Jose backer but, and I know spring isn't supposed to mena much, hes reall concerned me with not taking that next step yet in a Sox uniform. In fact he's really regressed. I bet Florida, with Valdez, is willing to listen to a trade offer in a few months. It may be good for us, but it won't happen. If Contreras can't turn it around NOW, he will be seen by everyone as just another bad pitcher. (Actually, that's how most people think of him now.) Soriano is a hacker, but that's not a big enough flaw to wipe out everything he does well (excellent power, speed, and still manages a .320-.330 obp, which isn't disastrous, even if it isn't good). It could only happen, imo, if Contreras has a surprisingly good first half. One interesting thing -- Placido Polanco was named the starting 2b for the Phils over Chase Utley after they each had a tremendous spring. The surprising part is that everyone thought they had committed to Utley as the starter, while Polanco would be the utility guy (which Polanco b****ed about). While PP had a somewhat better spring overall, I don't think it would be enough to change my mind if I had already decided.
  4. I have to miss it, but I'll listen to the replay tonight w/ peanuts, hot dogs, and some beer. (Yes, I am that much of a loser.) Go Sox!!!
  5. Greinke and Bonderman were 'look-at-me' choices. Greinke won't win, no matter how good he is (and I'm a huge Greinke fan), just b/c he's on the Royals -- same reason you wait on Oliver Perez in fantasy drafts. Not enough wins. Bonderman -- I guess you can argue it, if you think the Tigers will really make huge strides this year. But I still kind of laugh at that idea. Jason Johnson is a big part of their staff. He got non-tendered by the Orioles, after all, who are as desparate as anyone for starting pitching. It doesn't surprise me that a couple people pick Minny in the WS. It's plausible. It surprised me that a LOT of people pick Minny, over the big 3. Possible, but still unlikely.
  6. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 03:33 AM) I was hoping Mo would get a save chance for me but it wasn't a close game No kidding? Just joking around, nothing intended P&J.
  7. Well if they can come back from 3-0 then they can... Never mind. OUCH. For those watching the game, did Mantei look as bad as his line does? Who were the real dogs here?
  8. Already a discussion on this: here.
  9. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 08:50 PM) Remember steroids could help to boost your speed, so the fact that he only had 2 hr last year shouldn't be all that shocking. He's taking them for agility. Also, I believe they can help your muscles heal faster (though obviously they don't help other parts of your body over the long term) -- and Sanchez had some muscle injuries last year. He was out from early August to the end of the season with a quadricep injury. Just a theory.
  10. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 12:20 AM) Alright thanks, I'm not a Ravens fan, I was just wondering. Okay -- more info than you were looking for? I am a bit of a Ravens fan (after the Bears, for sure). I think your allegiance is pretty clear...
  11. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 08:09 PM) Whoever signs him will get a steal. Do the Ravens have any cap room? I could see him going back there if they do. Some, but I don't think it's enough. They got hit when Chester Taylor got the absurd offer sheet from the Bengals. Supposedly the Ravens haven't contacted Sharper (the Bengals have), even though he said he'd be willing to return to Baltimore. Edit: Taylor got the offer sheet from the Browns, not the Bengals. Ohio's just too damn confusing.
  12. QUOTE(Jake @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 04:05 PM) why doesnt ozuna have the best average? Good question. Possibilities: 1. Just barely missing some plate appearances cutoff (has enough abs). 2. Seems more likely: Wasn't actually on the Sox major league roster (he was a non-roster invitee, iirc).
  13. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 03:52 PM) I can't believe how many people picked the Twins to get in the world series. Exactly what I was thinking. They must think if they just wish really, really hard...
  14. QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Apr 2, 2005 -> 03:45 PM) I think if Crazy Carl starts tearing it up I'm going to talk my friends into making a few games at the Cell this year in some sort of dinosaur get up and signs that say "Hey Carl, we believe in you" Nice.
  15. Jurassic kicking ass every which way.
  16. I've heard that he wants to rejoin Marvin Lewis in Cincinnati. Pretty nice pickup for whoever gets him.
  17. QUOTE(soxman352000 @ Apr 2, 2005 -> 12:16 AM) I see that the Texans have let him go. I wonder why, I thought he was damn good linebacker. Cap space, I believe. There've been trade rumors for a while now. But I guess all those teams waited the Texans out.

    The Pope...

QUOTE(soxman352000 @ Apr 2, 2005 -> 12:13 AM) It looks bad now his kidneys have failed and he continues to slip in and out. Who is going to break the news when he dies? Cardinal Camillo Ruini, according to the NYT.
  19. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 06:20 PM) Nah, but that works though. We didn't want anyone to get so pissed off they would leave that was just me Hopefully everyone got a laugh of it, which was the whole point. Thanks for playing along for all those who did. You're such a lovely audience we'd like to take you home with us, we'd love to take you home! SS is posting again? Well there goes the one part of the joke that I DID like... J/k!!! :coweringinfear
  20. You guys should totally get together w/ qwerty -- in his own words he "bleeds cubby blue".
  21. QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 05:35 PM) OK this is getting rediculous now. Yeah, it's played at this point. Although I keep trying to figure out who is who. Btw, guys? -- acting lessons.
  22. QUOTE(Steff @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 05:22 PM) rangercal padding his post count.. Lol!
  23. QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 12:23 AM) As much as I hate to say it this is a perfect example of why when someone puts a gun to you that you need to just do whatever the hell they want. I know if someone held up a gun to me i'd give them my wallet, cars, keys, whatever just in order to get out of there alive. Nothing is more important then your life and it's sad this girl learned that the hard way. But this was a friend of a friend -- I imagine she thought it was just joking around (albeit a f'd up way of joking, for sure).
  24. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 01:25 AM) The funny thing is that no one ever even brought up the word "sabermetrics" in this thread. Could it be that because you are a believer in sabermetrics or a "stat-head" that you are defending Neyer at all costs? Uh, no. I think it has value, that's all. I don't know enough about it to be a "'stat-head'". As for it never coming up -- Neyer is the public face of sabermetrics. When people start trying to dismiss his arguments wholesale without addressing a single one of them, I think it's a fair guess what the motive is. "At all costs"? Are you nuts? I said I often disagree with him. For example, he wrote something a while back disparaging Buehrle, and I thought he'd drastically underrated Buehrle (overstressing the peripherals, understressing his apparent consistency). That said, he presented an argument -- it seemed fair to address the argument on its face, not by finding some technicality in an unrelated piece which was quickly corrected.
