  1. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Feb 22, 2005 -> 01:47 AM) I'm not a crack pot end times guy, so I couldn't tell you. I'm just answering your question. I grew up a Christian and had many experiences being on the receiving end of ridicule... Not that I think I've had it nearly as hard as most black individuals, but I think it's very difficult a white person to understand the prejudices a black person faces. I just don't think non-christian, or non-born again believers rather, can grasp what I'm talking about. Well, if you get marginalized at the End of Days, sorry 'bout that in advance. Best of luck to you and the other 143,999. I grew up Christian too (it's changed since), and I never once felt ridiculed for it. Since then, of course, I've been informed that I don't have any morality, but hey, my internet porn searches tell me that.
  2. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Feb 22, 2005 -> 01:00 AM) in all seriousness, have you ever read revalation? As in, the Book of? (I assume you mean Revelations.) Yeah. Which horseman is upon us now, PA?
  3. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Feb 21, 2005 -> 11:42 PM) I just don't get that. Aren't there more women on this planet than men? So we don't fight sexism because population totals? do you see why this is unsettling? it should be a universal thing. That's what I don't get from the left. why is that ok? Okay, I was thinking of dominant majorities, those in power. In America, Christians are just the overwhelming majority. Women still don't have (I'm watching Seinfeld) equal hand. I understand. (Honestly -- I still get peeved at all the 'Catholic priests are all molesters' comments.) I just don't think the concerns are equal. Do Christians really think they're going to be marginalized?
  4. QUOTE(CrimsonWeltall @ Feb 21, 2005 -> 05:44 AM) Not if the traits are of a different type. Gender, race, ethnicity, and sexual preference are all inborn traits (though some people might argue the last one). It's stupid to make fun of them because people can't do s*** about it. People on Soxtalk who insult those traits usually get into some trouble. On the other hand, actions and opinions are different because people choose to do/have them, so comments against Cubs Fans or Liberals or Conservatives or people of religion X usually get by. It's fair to ask whether or not someone of faith has a 'choice' in the matter -- at least many believers think that way. Especially if you believe that God calls/chooses people. Fwiw -- I'm an atheist. It's usually more important to protect minorities, majorities aren't really 'threatened'. I think that's a lot of it. Anyway, religious humor is some of the best. "...we can do the next best thing...Let's kill people."
  5. QUOTE(Wanne @ Feb 21, 2005 -> 07:50 PM) Give up beer?!?!?.....NEVER!!! Bingo. I've reacted to YAS many ways. But never with pity before now...
  6. QUOTE(qwerty @ Feb 20, 2005 -> 08:54 AM) You do know that there is a 3.5 million dollar buy out right? Probally not. Anyway, the sox will not be be asking themselves if he is worth ten million dollars. The question they will be asking themselves is if he is worth 6.5 million dollars. Which the vast majority of baseball will tell you he is a bargain at that price. Considering he will put up better offensive numbers than 95% of baseball if not more when healthy. That was one of the surprises in the article (for me, anyway) -- Rogers made it sound as if Frank is as good as gone, no matter what he does this year. That makes no sense -- at $6.5 mil, how in the world can you not take that option? Jeromy Burnitz just got $5 mil, and we think we can do better than Frank w/ that sum?
  7. QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Feb 20, 2005 -> 06:10 AM) And we wonder why we can't get a winning team here, Ozzie over Cabrera.. 42 HR's ...Hitting coors light.. Makes a overrated player like Uribe look like a stud. Overstatement sux... Frank hits for power, gets on base at a .400 clip (!), draws tons of walks, and you would rather have cheese whiz. (2 years, $2 mil -- that MUST be a joke.) Be realistic. Frank is still, today, a great hitter.
  8. QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Feb 20, 2005 -> 12:22 AM) I never understand this.. Players are very rarely "loyal" to teams yet teams have to be loyal to the players? That makes no sense.. WE are a cash strapped team right? So if we pay Frank 10 mil in 06 to be on IR, instad of going after a hole in our team that makes no sense. For the record I am a huge Frank Fan, but no one player is bigger than the team, this is something most fans don't get. Besides we have Pauly to be a DH, and with the money saved we can go out and grab a 1b.. If Frank is willing to take a pay cut then I am all for him being here, but since he has not put up the money worth his play 10 mil .. SEE YA. The whole issue is health, though. If he recovers, he's worth well more than any player you can get at $6.5 mil ($10 mil in salary freed - $3.5 mil buyout.) I don't see any reason to think he'll be injured all year. This isn't Ken Griffey we're talking about. Btw, there's no crying, and no IR in baseball...
  9. I'm surprised I don't see anything about the new Phil Rogers article on Frank. (If it's there, sorry, but the search wasn't working for me.) Here's the link. Any thoughts? A taste: Also Ozzie saying that Frank has to be 90-100% to play. So apparently Everett is only about 5% worse than a perfectly healthy Frank. This underrates Frank, and by a LOT. The reason other teams did not use 1 dh as much is because there are precious few hitters as good as Frank, not by choice. This emphasis on hr (see the article) is silly -- noone is criticizing the Sox for losing hr, per se. First Carlos is made out to be just another slugger, now Frank?
  10. QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 25, 2005 -> 12:10 AM) No, I did NOT take a shot at you. YOU read into it. Did you ever CONSIDER asking me if I took a shot at you? Instead of just knee jerk reacting and telling me to shut the f*** up? The only shot I took at you was AFTER you told me to STFU. This is twice now you've gotten all bent out of shape, taking things the wrong way and getting in people's faces. Maybe consider chilling out? And to repeat ... do NOT tell me to STFU, that's not something I take lightly. Don't believe that for one second. Saying I'm not really a Sox fan, rather a fan of the players -- as if I'd be happier next year if Maggs is a triple crown candidate and the Sox finished 2nd again -- for anyone on this board, that's taking a shot at them. I'm done with this, but I don't buy this crap for a second. You're full of s***.
  11. QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 25, 2005 -> 12:03 AM) WOW. Are you a little testy, or WHAT? First beck, now me. By the way, don't EVER tell me to STFU, I'll give it right back to you, ten times over. I understand completely. You like Harris, good for you. I have repeatedly said I have nothing against him, but I have seen some things I don't like and it "appears" Sox management agrees. Sorry if you can't get all the hard and fast proof you want. On Ozzie ... you take it as fact that he loves to hear himself speak about how guys suck? Yet you won't take it as fact that Harris has attitudinal issues? Must be nice to pick and choose like that. And don't throw YOUR "guess" around like it's fact. Understand clearly enough? Difference being of course, I've heard and read what Ozzie's said about each of those 3. Haven't heard any quotes of Willie's yet. You took a shot at me, saying I'm not a true fan. That's BULLs***, and I don't for a second regret telling you to shut up.
  12. QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 11:27 PM) Some are more fans of the individual players vs. the team, maybe that's you, I don't know. Your last statement is a little off the wall, IMO. "Everyone" will be happy if Ozzie gets an opporunity to talk s*** about someone? I think not. You won't get any factual evidence that Harris has attitudinal, umm, problems. Not to your satisfaction anyway I would guess. The closest to factual evidence is they've signed Iguchi. My guess is he rubs people the wrong way and thinks his you know what doesn't stink. Too bad he doesn't have the production to back it up. I mentioned on another thread about reading on WSI where some guy saw Harris yakking on his cell phone while signing autographs during his session. Now, maybe this and maybe that, but to me that's a little clueless. Send it to voice mail. You're there for 250 autographs and mingle with the fans. But that's just me ... and I guess that's just one example. I don't appreciate the first statement. I'm a Sox fan, so that means I can't be a fan of certain players too? That's pure stupidity, just stfu. I think Harris has talent, and no matter what he does it'll never be used here. As a baseball fan, I find that disappointing. So sorry you can't understand that. My whole point was that there's no evidence that he's a problem. I'm told, nope, but he still is. That's bs, don't throw around your "guess" as if it were fact. My own "guess" is that Ozzie just overreacted to some missed bunts. But I don't know that, so I don't act like it's got any value. As for Ozzie, I don't see how that's off the wall. There's more than enough evidence that he loves to hear himself speak about how much other people suck -- whether it's about Showalter, the umps, or Carlos Lee.
  13. QUOTE(gotoh00 @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 10:03 PM) Well....Mike Hardgrove said Ichiro was nothing more than a 4th outfielder when he saw him play in 1998. It's hard to rely on major league guys' analyses soince some of them just can't accept that many Japanese players are good enough to play over here. Except that King is praising most of the people he played against, even saying some might be better than Ichiro. Only Iguchi was singled out, b/c he supposedly couldn't catch up to a ML fastball. We'll see, like I said, it could very well just be spin by the Cards.
  14. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 09:29 PM) Hey Welcome aboard and thanks for this info. Its great getting info from people who have seen him. I have modest expectations of him, but I do think he'll come and be fundementally sound and hopefully adjust to the fastball like I recall a major league pitcher saying he'll need to do if he will suceed at the majors. I think it was Ray King who said this, but not positive. Yeah, it was King. Kind of worrisome. Story on Cards website. Then again, since the Cards were one of the names mentioned w/ Iguchi, it might just be spin.
  15. I didn't see Ray King's comments until today (thanks to TLAK for mentioning this), so I'm a little more worried now. His k/bb numbers were very erratic in Japan too. Over a full season, I'll go w/ .250/.320/.400, 10 hr, rbi -- who knows, depends on where he hits. But that's only if the Sox stick w/ him over the full season, and I expect him to really struggle early on.
  16. Okay, I had to leave for a while and I missed the fireworks. I agree that the Sox don't like Willie. But they do like Timo. Sorry, but that sort of judgement I'll always question. They've been wrong before, they'll be wrong again. The response to this is usually, 'Well, that's their opinion and just b/c fans don't agree won't change anything.' Yeah, of course, but if we only posted when we thought we would change something, this site wouldn't need a server -- a 3.5 in floppy would hold the posts. And they'd all be about green seats. That's really missing the point. But if someone states that Willie has attitude problems as if it's fact, I want to hear some evidence. Right now the reason to trade Willie is that the Sox don't like him, and the Sox don't like him because they have a reason...some reason. Oh. Actually, I'm optimistic about Willie, so I wouldn't mind seeing him traded. I think he deserves a better chance than he'll get here. Plus, Ozzie'll then get another opportunity to talk s*** about someone, so it'll make everyone happy.
  17. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 07:03 PM) Jabroni -- was it you who posted a link to a Baltimore Oriole prospect website? Well, whoever did it, if you're reading this, can you post it again? It was Juggernaut, iirc. I can't remember exactly which thread it was in though.
  18. QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 06:46 PM) Lots of innuendo though. I don't think you will ever hear people associated with the team come out in a quote and say, "this guy Willie Harris ... he is not a good fit attitude-wise on this team. He's afraid to steal bases, he's inconsistent, but worst of all he walks around the clubhouse like he's big man on campus when in reality he hasn't proven a damn thing." Guillen, Harrelson, Jackson, Dave Wills, John Rooney are all guys who have made some pretty strong negative observations about Harris. To me, that's a lot of smoke to have no fire. As for an opportunity to prove himself, everybody always wants more of an opportunity. He did have a reasonable opportunity in 2004, and he did ok. My position all along is there are deeper issues than just his stats. If there weren't, the Sox wouldn't have gone to all ends of the earth to find another 2B. Not that much. Just that Ozzie likes to talk, so you hear a lot of it. The announcers tend to echo Sox management, so I just don't take too much from that (witness the sea change that occurred when Jimenez left -- from 'we don't see that at all' to 'worst teammate in the game'). If you look at the minor league reports, everyone praises his leadership and attitude. That's from both partial and impartial sources. And you didn't hear anything snide after the Sox got him, like you did w/ Jimenez leaving the Padres. So he's confident, why is that at ALL bad? He's never (as far as I've heard) said anything negative about his teammates, only positive things about himself. And he's never gone to the press complaining when he loses time or gets thrown into a different position. So I will continue to see Harris as a model citizen as long as I see nothing solid behind all this talk.
  19. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 05:57 PM) You're getting into this debate rather late. There is a huge difference between Rowand and Harris that any educated Sox fan will be sure to point out. With Harris, you have attitude problems and questions of desire. With Rowand, you do not. Harris has fallen out of grace with the Sox organization for a reason...something to chew on. Cut out this "educated Sox fan" crap, just b/c someone doesn't agree w/ you. "attitude problems and questions of desire" = Ozzie doesn't like him. I just don't buy it. He's never been given a shot to prove himself, and he's been yo-yoed between 2nd and cf for 2 years. I haven't seen much of anything solid about Harris's attitude. Only this vague innuendo.
  20. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 19, 2005 -> 04:26 PM) I was thinking we could start gaging interest in leagues now, so that when they start we can smoothly transition into the season. Maybe we should gauge interest, instead of gaging it. I disappeared the last time a big gaging was done around here... I'd like to be in a league. I've only done the MLB "Basic" fantasy game before, so I'd say I'm pretty new to fantasy baseball, obviously new to Soxtalk fantasy baseball.
  21. Okay, wtf, why is Atlanta throwing it this much, esp on 1st down? Throwing into this wind, he has no clue where that pass is going. Stupid play calls.
  22. I don't think it would be a "surprise" if Carl proves a very good player next year. He had one off-year, that's it. Even in his off-year, he posted a .320 obp. When you look at their stats over the last few years, I'm at least as confident about Carl as I am about Dye (at the plate, anyway). Imo, this is $4 mil that's well worth it.
  23. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 07:05 PM) You obviously didn't hear the man himself speak out on TV last night, you just read the whitewash the NYT published but I don't expect you to listen or care when even one of your own sees this organization for what it is. Mr. Meyers himself said he was about to be kicked out, Meyers himself said he had a major disagreement with the ACLU board and not just over administrative stuff either. Dont take his words and try to make them mine. As I've proven in my earlier post, the ACLU is all about individual freedoms alright. The freedom to be a child pornographer, the freedom to say whatever kind of vile crap you want over the airwaves regardless of how offensive it is, the feeedom to do any and everything save for even hint that you are somewhat religous. If you are they're coming with their lawsuit hammer. Yeah, never mind that he announced it AFTER the president of the ACLU said he wouldn't be kicked out. Which you could have learned easily if you'd just looked at the news. You're a riot, I'm done with this.
  24. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 11:59 AM) Of course they're gonna backtrack now that their hypocrasy was made public. Enough people hate them already and they dont need anymore black eyes. Id have thought that was obvious but I guess that went over your head in your rush to defend them. Uh huh. I used to give you some credit for at least trying to make an honest argument, but here every single thing you used to back up your case was wrong, and you don't have the spine to admit that you just screwed up. They aren't backtracking -- the very first response to this, before the articles were written, a day before this interview you saw, was from the president of the ACLU, saying that there was virtually no chance anything would come of it. AFTER she said this, your source goes on tv and throws a hissy fit, saying he was about to be kicked out. Not that you've ever trusted anyone w/ the ACLU before, but damn, now all of a sudden his word is gospel, despite lots of evidence to the contrary. Noone even mentioned religious freedom cases until he did. By all reports, it had nothing to do with the complaint. The complaint which did not come from the people he was having the disagreement with. You claimed that he was being kicked out (no) for disagreeing (no) on issues (no). He disagreed w/ some central officials on matters of oversight, administrative crap, and he took it public. That prompted someone from the Oregon affiliate (note: not the people he was arguing w/) to issue the complaint. All of which you've conveniently ignored, in your mindless ranting on a vast left-wing conspiracy to replace all Bibles w/ kiddie porn. What a joke. The ACLU did nothing here but confirm how committed they are to individual rights, even when they're being blasted by someone on the board. That's an amazing show of patience, I wouldn't blame them one bit for disciplining these 2. You've confirmed that you're incapable of reading the news to find out if some nut on tv had his facts straight.
  25. QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 04:13 PM) Yeah, I'm not 100% sold on him either... but at this point I think the Sox need a back-up IF who isn't a "rookie" Now I know Iguchi would be technically a rookie, but he has performed in a league where other players have came to MLB and had success (i know there is failures too). I just would feel better with him than Wilson Valdez. I would have been OK with a tragically average MLB vetran back-up like Enrique Wilson, Alex Gonzalez, etc... but those guys are gone now, so Iguchi is the best option out there barring a trade Enrique Wilson is more tragic than average. I can't for the life of me understand why you'd take a player who's definitely awful over an unknown commodity like Valdez. How much worse can Valdez possibly be than Wilson's .210/.257/.329 over the last few years? I would expect Iguchi to have at least as many growing pains as a rookie. If they sign him, it should be for talent reasons, not experience.
