  1. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 10, 2005 -> 10:38 PM) Chris Young starting in B-Ham was certainly the right move after all. Him and Owens have been the pleasent suprises this season so far. Yep, they really must have impressed in camp, especially Young. Owens looked good in the spring games I saw, so it wasn't as shocking to see him start there as opposed to Young.
  2. Birmingham won 7-4. Sweeney, Rogo, Fields, and Young all had 2 hits, with Chris Young belting his 6th HR of the year. Sweeney had a double and Rogo a triple. Haggerty also HR'd. Is Jerry Owens hurt? Haven't seen him listed in a few games now... http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/mil...msbaax_biraax_1 Winston-salem won 6-5 pounding out 15 hits. Valido went 4-5 with a double and an RBI, back up over .300 to .313. Collaro and Molina homered. Whisler with a shaky bullpen outing. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/mil...wswafx_salafx_1
  3. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ May 10, 2005 -> 09:25 PM) McCarthy 5 IP 8 hits, 5 ER, 3 BB, 7 K's. Thats the worst line I've seen from Brandon. I'm sure he will bounce back. But his era is shockingly over 4 now. Bajenaru another scoreless inning with a K. Brian Anderon 2-4, ho-hum :-). Left 2 guys on base in the 6th who both scored after he left the game. Both HR's were solo shots. Game was at Charlotte, remember.
  4. QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ May 5, 2005 -> 11:51 PM) http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2054265 I'll be honest, I wrote this guy off for good. I'm very glad he's back, and hopefully he can become a stud pitcher and put his past far behind him. I advocated drafting this guy at 15 instead of Brian Anderson, how wrong was I? Hell, just about every prognosticator said Anderson was a sadnwich or 2nd rounder in that draft and that Sweeney would go before him. All Anderson does is hit. Everywhere he's been.
  5. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ May 5, 2005 -> 08:48 PM) I saw cesar Carillo on the hotlist the other day. THe Miami pitcher is a MT Carmel guy I think and is now 22-0 lifetime at Miami. Best of all, he said he's a White Sox fan! Where is he supposed to go int he draft. I know we don't have a #2 so we likely can't get him unless we reach at #15. Just curious what his draft prospects are Questions about his size, projectability and durability will probably drop him to late first unless someone makes a pre-draft signability deal with his camp...
  6. QUOTE(danman31 @ May 2, 2005 -> 03:31 PM) Yeah, I should have emphasized that point in the article. The point remains that last year's group had more talent than this year's group. It's taken miracle work from Gio and Liotta and great bullpen work to keep them around .500 the way the offense is hitting. Looking at the top 25 guys that played on Kanny last year... Haigwood was inconsistent, we put him on the prospect list because we think that last year's numbers were lower due to his ACL injury that had him miss a full year. Gray, Young, and Schnur were pretty good the entire year for them. Valido had a rough year with the bat. Fabio Castro is a middle reliever, he was solid, but minimal team impact. Andy Gonzalez played around a month with Kanny. Whisler made only a few starts after the draft. BMac was promoted midseason. Gio and Hernandez barely played with them after late season promotions. Again, I probably should have emphasized this a little more. Still though, that's 8 guys that started the season with Kanny while it's hard to see more than 5 or 6 possible solid prospects to start the season on this year's roster. The problem with this year's team is they really don't have much positional talent or the players that do have talent are very inexperienced/young. Last year, it was a bit of the opposite except for McCarthy's time there.
  7. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 1, 2005 -> 10:48 PM) To me I'd prefer the college player over the high schooler just because it's a more sure thing, but if the best player on the board is a high schooler you take him, just look at Gio. Also when you look at Josh Fields and how he's progressed that's definitely a plus. Tyler Lumsden was picked at #30 IIRC, and the Sox thought he was the best college lefty on the board at the time. We haven't really been able to see much of that because of his arm problems, but it's definitely something I'm really going to keep an eye on when he comes back, how he does and how fast he makes it up thru the system. He had electric stuff when I saw him last year.
  8. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 2, 2005 -> 01:13 AM) Not good. Why is that? Most of those prospects only spent short stints there or were only in Kanny for short periods after being drafted. Young, Valido, and Schnurstein were the only ones really to spend much more than a month or 2 there. Where are the pitchers? They cycled through...
  9. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 2, 2005 -> 07:39 AM) Right now with Owens, if he continues hitting the way he does, when do you promote him to Charlotte, if that's what you decide to do, and who do you demote? Maybe it's time to get rid of Borch to make room for him, although they'll probably consider sending down someone like Mike Spidale first. He was in low-A last year. I think you give him a whole season in Birmingham. We have no reason to rush the kid. Remember, he's only had a couple years of organized ball after leaving UCLA's football team. There is nothing wrong with letting him get his feet firmly planted on the ground. We have a plethora of OF prospects and a full OF for all of this year if not all of next year as well, and Brian Anderson is ready to play now, but has nowhere to go.
  10. QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Apr 27, 2005 -> 09:08 PM) since Owens changed his swing does "since Owens changed his swing" = "Changed his batting stance?"
  11. QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Apr 27, 2005 -> 10:49 AM) Barons showing some offense beating Tennessee 11-2 right now. Big days in the works for Owens, Young, Fields, and Blakely. Lubisich with a solid start. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/mil...biraax_tenaax_1 Winston-Salem losing to Frederick 7-4 right now. Myers with a HR, Ryan Rodriguez got roughed up a bit. Myers and Molina have 5 of W-S's 6 hits after 7 innings. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/mil...frdafx_wswafx_1
  12. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 27, 2005 -> 09:24 AM) In a twist of ironies, Bobby Hill would be perfect for our needs right now. Ummm, we need a SS, we have 3 or 4 guys who can play 2nd.
  13. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/minor...tsheet2005.html No Valido or Anderson in the honorable mention? Anderson hitting over .320 in AAA after starting last year in W-S... impressive...
  14. Love the in-thread box scores, Heads. Makes it much easier than chasing down multiple box scores on the crappy new minor league site.
  15. Per Alan York (W-S media relations guy), Wes Whisler tweaked his shoulder in his first start, is day-to-day. Supposed to start throwing again here in a day or 2, they don't believe it is anything serious, just taking proper precautions. Several had asked about it, just thought I'd let you folks know. Thanks to Alan for the quick reply.
  16. Richmond @ Charlotte Birmingham @ Tennessee - Sean Tracey (2-0 2.20) vs. E. Gonzalez (0-0 6.75) Winston-Salem off today Kannapolis off today
  17. QUOTE(danman31 @ Apr 25, 2005 -> 03:09 PM) Well the real question is whether Rodriguez getting moved up would be permanent or temporary only until the Sox can sign a guy or stretch out Ryan Meaux like they did last year. Is Malone ready to go back into the rotation? Diaz healthy? Still awaiting word on Whisler, no reply from W-S.
  18. QUOTE(SouthSide2004 @ Apr 24, 2005 -> 03:17 PM) How about Amador hitting his fifth homerun of the season. If only he could draw a walk, we actually might have something there. LOL! They start more aggressively testing for steroids and THEN Amador goes nuts. HA!
  19. will be interesting to see if this is the chain reaction that results in Gio jumping to W-S...
  20. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 20, 2005 -> 02:39 PM) I'm wrong Randy. He was supposed to be starting for them on opening day. I'm going to shoot Alan an email when I get home and see whats wrong with Wes. Thanks, I've been travelling a lot so I was wondering if I had missed something, still searching on it...
  21. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 20, 2005 -> 02:15 PM) Fixed...Kanny is playing some good ball thus far though. Gotta make up for Charlotte, LOL! Kanny wins game 2 by the same 5-4 score. Moat picks up the win out of the pen, Hurd the save. Smith and Berry with HR's, De Los Santos was 3 with a 2B and a BB. Interesting to note that Ricks was the catcher in this game. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/mil...kanafx_gboafx_2
  22. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 20, 2005 -> 02:14 PM) About damn time. Dizard is one of those guys who I liked righ whne the Sox drafted him. He's put up good numbesr but out of the pen. He's got a fantastic curve and early in his career at USC some people had compared him to Zito. This is a great move for him and a great move by the organization. Thanks for pointing this out Mike. Hope he can stay healthy. It's been his problem for some time. Hey Jason, any news on Whisler? Someone at WSI pointed out he missed some starts, somehow that had slipped through the cracks...
  23. Kanny wins game 1 of a DH 5-4. Josh Hansen with another HR went 2-3 with 2 RBI. Liotta went 6 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K yet still got the win with a Zaleski save. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/mil...kanafx_gboafx_1 A Mod can fix my sub-title on the heading of this thread... two intersecting thoughts, LOL!
  24. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 09:55 PM) It's only been a freakin week!!!!! No kidding. Besides, if he can handle it, would you rather he spend an extra year in W-S or Kanny over the course of his minor league career or would you rather see him get more AB's in AA and AAA before they bring him to the majors? If he can candle it, physically and mentally, as he has shown, why the hell not?
  25. QUOTE(danman31 @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 09:27 PM) I know. I was thinking he was turning the corner late last season, but I'm not sure after the sluggish start in AA. It's early, but he's not the golden boy, that's for sure. Sweeney might be one of the 5 youngest players in AA in all the minors, you guys are harsh. He smoked everything against major league and AAA type pitchers all spring. He's the last guy we should be worrying about, IMO...
