QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 10:05 PM) I wonder if Lexi can turn it around defensively next year or if he should play second base for somebody the rest of his career. He has to be one of the worst defensive shortstops in baseball right now. He still rates among the best. The errors are bad but not enough to drag down all the other plays he makes

tough, tough error

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 09:41 PM) Looks like my theory about Dunn being a better hitter when playing 1st base is correct. .190/.288/.415./703 as DH. .258./374/.511/.885 playing 1st this year. So if the Sox get Abreu to play 1st they either should get rid of Dunn or tell him his future is at DH weather with them or someone else and hope he can wrap his head around that and play him at DH the rest of the year. Or play him at 1st a bunch see if he can maintain his good hitting and try really hard to rid themselves of him in the off season. There are some serious confounding variables there

FWIW, it was a horrible attempt at a catch by Lindstrom. He didn't need to lay out as it wasn't actually that far away from him. Pitchers usually not used to those plays though

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 09:23 AM) I had a similar diagnosis several years back. Even if you don't go the medication route, just learning some of the behavioral/routine tools ("Stop, don't switch tasks" is a good one for me) and being self-aware can make a huge difference. It also helped my wife (then-gf) understand to not take it personally when I'd forget things. There has definitely been a boost of self-esteem, just understanding where some things come from (like forgetting things, some of my pet peeves, difficulty with certain tasks, etc). I'm hiring an ADD coach and am at least going to try out some medication, but I'd love to not need it forever.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 04:54 PM) The next Axelrod/Simon Castro, yay! Those two players could hardly be more different

Cespedes can get you wins on the basepaths and on defense, something this guy won't do. He has one tool - his bat - and it has to pan out or he's completely useless. Cespedes can have a down year at the plate (96 wRC+ this year) but still become a 2 WAR player (1.6 WAR so far, on track for 2.3/2.4 per Steamer/ZiPs)

You should look at how Jermaine Dye was doing before he was unable to get a job

We hear the comparisons to Ryan Howard. Remember what Ryan Howard looks like when he plays a little worse than expected - bad. We'd be rewarding this guy with what is basically the contract Ryan Howard received in his prime. It's kind of insane. I'll try to trust the White Sox, but hot damn is there a lot of risk if the price is as high as some speculate. Seems like an odd expenditure when you've just put yourself in an amazing position financially.

For people that hated the Dunn deal, it's a little funny to see how eager everyone jumping on a guy who we would give twice as much money for a lot less certainty (and we see how far certainty gets you w/ Dunn)
-
I wouldn't hate the idea of resigning Dunn to a lower value contract after next year, given that I don't know what that team will look like. I bet somebody overpays, though.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 8, 2013 -> 07:41 PM) Or maybe it's because most people don't need more than 32 GB of storage on their phones. Unless you're loading your entire music library and movie library onto your phone, you should have more than enough space. I have 20 games on my Nexus 7 and I still have 13 GB left. I didn't mean that to be an endorsement of SD cards. I totally agree with what you are saying. SD cards have stability issues and such anyway. I'm using an HTC One, so it clearly wasn't really on my radar

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 05:54 PM) So are you interested at 6/90? Probably not. If I had trusted scouts, they may be able to sway me though.

Peavy to Boston, Avisail Garcia + 3 low lv specs to Sox

Peavy has not lost 5 mph on his fastball -
Marty is definitely right about the market for Cubans (and Japanese imports for that matter). There is tremendous risk and if I was a betting man, I would immediately bet that he provides no surplus value on a $50M deal. However, talent is finite and I've been saying how money can't always buy you talent...well, in this case it can. With no other real long-term answers at 1B available for that money on our team or in FA or likely in trade, it might be the wise thing to do.
-
Garcia's age and less MiLB production than Sanchez makes him less valuable for me, though Garcia is certainly talented enough to turn out better than Sanchez. While Carlos is having a down year as a very young AAA player, Garcia is 22 and has yet to have a real "up" year.

8/9/13 Sox v. Twins Day/Night DH
Jake replied to CaliSoxFanViaSWside's topic in 2013 Season in Review
It's like Viciedo is hurt or something .... oh wait -
The White Sox do not have the worst farm system in baseball.
-
There is no pressure to dump salary. We have enough money to buy players if we want them. What we don't have is talent and our money can't buy that. Our players can buy that, though

Better for environment: toilet paper or bidet?

Choosing which marginal benefit you like today determines which things receive more development over time. For instance, while SD card slots are cool, they are becoming less and less common because customers apparently have other priorities.

Rios has value. More specifically, he has value to acquire things we covet and cannot buy with money - young players. In most cases, these young players will simply become roleplayers. However, the beauty of young players is that occasionally you get a true star. We can't go take his salary and buy a cornerstone without considerable risk. While the risk of a young player not working is very real, you're not out any money when it happens. Trade Rios (now or in the offseason) - get young players, if they don't work out, take the money and try to buy replacements Let Rios go for nothing - get money, either leave it in the pocket of the owner or try to buy replacements Would rather have two chances to get production (trade) or one (release)?
